• Getting the errors for code in unopened .aspx pages

  Is there a way to check for errors in unopened *.ASPX pages. For example, if you change the name of a function Visual Studio will catch the error on the page and list it in the "Error List" only if the page is opened and being validated? I guess the question could be is there a validation option opposed to the compile option to check for errors? (Yes, i know code should go into the pre-compiled code-behind pages.) • How do i have optional parameter but still validate them in asp.net mvc routing ?

  I have this route that i just added routes.MapRoute( "MyRoute", "MyController/{action}/{orgId}/{startDate}/{endDate}", new { controller = "MyController", action = "MyAction", orgId = 0, startDate = DateTime.Today.AddMonths(-1), endDate = DateTime.Today }, new { action = new FromValuesListConstraint(new string[] { "MyAction", "MyActionEx" }), orgId = new IntegerRouteConstraint(), startDate = new DateTimeRouteConstraint(), endDate = new DateTimeRouteConstraint() } when i put in this url, it resolves down to the default route (controller, action,id) and the above rout does not catch this url: http://localhost:1713/MyController/MyAction/16 But this below works fine. http://localhost:1713/MyController/MyAction/16/11-May-10/11-May-10 my question is that i thought both would work as i am giving default values to the startDate and enddate fields i tested this using the RouteDebugger and this route turned up false how can i have these last two parameter as optional but still have the validation ?

  Im trying to use Web Deploy with arvixe hosting. I enabled Publishing with the host but I get SSL exception when I hit publish. Is anybody familiar with the following exception: Error 59 Web deployment task failed.(Could not complete the request to remote agent URL 'https://yew.arvixe.com:8172/msdeploy.axd?site=mywebsite.com'.) • How to use Messageboxes in MVVM?

  It seems that the XAML in MVVM pattern has difficulty to pop-up a Messageboxes. My client insists that the validation labels and colors are not good for them. They still want a messagebox. How can do it? I know I can pop-up messageboxes in the view-model, but it violates the whole purpose for the view-model. I can also raise a error, and pop-up a messagebox in some exception handlers, but the messagebox is not an exception. It is part of the normal program flow. Is there a good way to do it in XAML? My client likes messageboxes. She does not care about the MVVM pattern, she never had any quality problem before using MVVM and unit test. But now, she can not even get her messageboxes, so she is not very happy. Your help is definitely appreciated ... I need to make her happy.

• qTip with jQuery dialogs

  I'm using qTip to show validation errors in a grid. The tooltip appears after a failed row save and doesn't disappear until the row is resaved or the changes are canceled. The problem with this is that opening a dialog while the tooltip is visible causes the tooltip to be rendered on top of the dialog. That is because the z-index is hard-coded to 6000+ for all tooltips, while jQuery dialogs are set to 1000+. I could fix this problem by changing the hard-coded value in qTip to <1000, but then tooltips fired from the dialog will appear behind the dialog. Is there anything I can do, aside from changing the qTip code or using a different tooltip library?

• JSF skips phases - How to debug that?

  Hey fellows, I have to debug a foreign jsf application thanks god. The problem is, that I submit a form, but the values aren't carried over. With a phase listener I can see, that the life cycle doesn't run completely through, so to say it skips phase 2 -5: After the restore view phase, the render response phase is directly called. I miss the apply values, validation, update model actions and so on. So, this could be a chicken-and-egg problem: 1. The responsible phases aren't called, so the new form input can't be carried over. 2. The system doesn't recognize any new input and therefore directly renders after restoring the view. I checked that there is no call of responseComplete() oder renderResponse(). I'm stuck somehow. Any idea to validate one of the two hypothesis? Or how to debug that in general? Did anybody have a similar problem?

  My company is planning to implement a solution in multiple applications that will help to validate mailing addresses at the point of data entry. We're using UPS's Extended Address Validation (XAV) web service API to validate the addresses. Our current plan is to build a .NET web service that can be used to communicate between our applications and the UPS API. We have applications in VB6, classic ASP, and .NET 2.0, so we'd like to implement a solution that can be easily consumed by each of these programming environments. What are our (Microsoft) options for designing a web service that can be consumed by multiple clients? In particular, is there a way to design a single web service that can respond with JSON (in case we want to validate our web page using javascript) in addition to XML? I'm new to designing web services and want to make sure we consider all of our options. I've heard terms like asmx, WCF, OData, etc., but I don't know which frameworks will support what we're trying to do and where to start.

• .NET Forms Abstraction for WPF, Silverlight, Winforms, WebForms, etc...

  Anyone know of a project(s) that seek to abstract form definitions on level higher than WPF, Silverlight, Winforms, WebForms, etc... I'm working on a project where we are fixing up 16 somewhat simple WebForms. But we may convert (and probably will convert to WPF or Silverlight 3 to 4 months from now. I'd rather define these forms once and be done with it. I'm willing to write a small DSL to help define forms, subforms, validation, links, and popups. I'm only looking to solve this for 80% or 90% of the forms. Four are very complicated and I'm willing to hand code these. I guess I'm looking for something like what XUL had hoped to be.

• Rails: getting logic to run at end of request, regardless of filter chain aborts?

  Is there a reliable mechanism discussed in rails documentation for calling a function at the end of the request, regardless of filter chain aborts? It's not after filters, because after filters don't get called if any prior filter redirected or rendered. For context, I'm trying to put some structured profiling/reporting information into the app log at the end of every request. This information is collected throughought the request lifetime via instance variables wrapped in custom controller accessors, and dumped at the end in a JSON blob for use by a post-processing script. My end goal is to generate reports about my application's logical query distribution (things that depend on controller logic, not just request URIs and parameters), performance profile (time spent in specific DB queries or blocked on webservices), failure rates (including invalid incoming requests that get rejected by before_filter validation rules), and a slew of other things that cannot really be parsed from the basic information in the application and apache logs. At a higher level, is there a different "rails way" that solves my app profiling goal?

  A User can add a Sentence directly on my website, via twitter or email. To add a sentence they must have a minimum score. If they don't have the minimum score they cant post the sentence and a warning message is either flashed on the website, sent back to them via twitter or email. So I'm wondering how best to code this check. Im thinking a sentence observer. So far my thoughts are in before_create score_sufficient() - score ok = save - score too low = do not save In the case of too low i need to return some flag so that the calling code can then fire off teh relevant warning. What type of flag should I return? False is too ambiguous as that could refer to validation. I could raise an exception but that doesn't sound right or I could return a symbol? Is this even the right approach? What's the best way to code this?

• WCF - call same service from client and server side

  I have a simple WCF service that I call server side from code behind via a service reference. It's used for validation and works and was automatically setup by Visual Studio and is using SOAP I think because the binding is wsHttpBinding. I want to use the same WCF service, but call it client side from jQuery using ajax(). I'm trying to implement it by way of these instructions. But if I make the changes to get the client side call working, I have to add the decoration below which I think will break what works on the server side and also change the system.serviceModel section in web.config. [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Wrapped, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json, RequestFormat= WebMessageFormat.Json) ] How do I have a WCF service that can be called both from the server-side and client side (jQuery/ajax)?

• Basic question in XSL regarding preceding text

  I am new to XSL and i have a basic question on the context of using preceding text. My template match is on the text node. I am iterating over an xml file and within my for loop i am trying to take the preceding text of the text node. Unfortunately preceding::text() is not working if i use it within a for loop.   In couchdb website - technical overview - security and validation - http://couchdb.apache.org/docs/overview.html - it writes that (on reader access part) "To protect document contents, CouchDB documents can have a reader list. This is an optional list of reader-names allowed to read the document. When a reader list is used, protected documents are only viewable by listed users." Are there any scripts or IDE wizards which can assist a programmer to create php forms quickly and also give the programmer flexibility to customize the form easily? I found some webservices which provide such services but they are mostly oriented towards non-programmers and the forms they generate are not easily customizable and do not support all kinds of functionalities. • Importing data from third party datasource (open architecture design )

  How would you design an application (classes, interfaces in class library) in .NET when we have a fixed database design on our side and we need to support imports of data from third party data sources, which will most likely be in XML? For instance, let us say we have a Products table in our DB which has columns Id Title Description TaxLevel Price and on the other side we have for instance Products: ProductId ProdTitle Text BasicPrice Quantity. Currently I do it like this: Have the third party XML convert to classes and XSD's and then deserialize its contents into strong typed objects (what we get as a result of this process is classes like ThirdPartyProduct, ThirdPartyClassification, etc.). Then I have methods like this: InsertProduct(ThirdPartyProduct newproduct) I do not use interfaces at the moment but I would like them to. What I would like is implement something like public class Contoso_ProductSynchronization : ProductSynchronization InsertProduct(ContosoProduct p) where ProductSynchronization will be an interface or abstract class. There will most likely be many implementations of ProductSynchronization. I cannot hardcode the types - classes like ContosoProduct, NorthwindProduct might be created from the third party XML's (so preferably I would continue to use deserialization). Hopefully someone will understand what I'm trying to explain here. Just imagine you are the seller and you have numerous providers and each one uses their own proprietary XML format. I don't mind the development, which will of course be needed everytime new format appears, because it will only require 10-20 methods to be implemented, I just want the architecture to be open and support that.

• Printer Communication Capture

  If I need to post this elsewhere let me know. We have some old software thats being re-written, that uses a printerdriver to a propriatery printer. I need to rewrite the software bypassing the print driver and go directly to the printer. I do have the specs for the printer communication, thats fine, but what Id like to do is monitor the communications to the printer to view its contents (from the existing software that Im re-writing) and compare it to the specs, and what I will be sending it for validation. I have to make sure Im not missing anything. Any ideas on how I might be able to accomplish this? Thanks

• ASP.NET MVC - How to Preserve ModelState Errors Across RedirectToAction?

  Hi Guys, I have the following two action methods (simplified for question): [HttpGet] public ActionResult Create(string uniqueUri) { // get some stuff based on uniqueuri, set in ViewData. return View(); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(Review review) { // validate review if (validatedOk) { return RedirectToAction("Details", new { postId = review.PostId}); } else { ModelState.AddModelError("ReviewErrors", "some error occured"); return RedirectToAction("Create", new { uniqueUri = Request.RequestContext.RouteData.Values["uniqueUri"]}); } } So, if the validation passes, i redirect to another page (confirmation). If an error occurs, i need to display the same page with the error. If i do return View(), the error is displayed, but if i do return RedirectToAction (as above), it loses the Model errors. I'm not surprised by the issue, just wondering how you guys handle this? I could of course just return the same View instead of the redirect, but i have logic in the "Create" method which populates the view data, which i'd have to duplicate. Any suggestions?

• Windows Installer (C#) error code 2869

  I have a project, in VS 2005, which has a console application and a setup project associated to install the application. I also have an installer class in the console application that the setup project will use to do some validation before installation. Those tasks are checking the database connection string and checking some directory locations to make sure they exist prior to installation. I am getting an error code of 2869 when I try to install the application. All the code is written in C#. I have googled for this error code on Windows XP, but only found articles that deal with Vista and Windows 7. Any ideas what might be happening? Is there a workaround?

• Validating call to web service against schema before sending request

  I am calling a web service (written in Java) in my web app. I use the WSDL to generate proxy classes using the wsdl.exe command line tool. Everything is working fine. However, I have found out that the web service is not doing any data validation at all when they receive a request from my app. Hence, if I happen to send one minute piece of data that isn't exactly what they want, I receive a general fault error in return, with no specifics at all of what the incorrect (if any) piece of data is. So, before I make the request, I'd like to validate my request against the schema they have provided. Is this possible, and if so, how do I go about this? Thanks in advance

• Errors in Decimal Calcs within def clean method?

  I'm attempting a few simple calculations in a def clean method following validation (basically spitting out a euro conversion of retrieved uk product price on the fly). I keep getting a TypeError. Full error reads: Cannot convert {'product': , 'invoice': , 'order_discount': Decimal("0.00"), 'order_price': {...}, 'order_adjust': None, 'order_value': None, 'DELETE': False, 'id': 92, 'quantity': 8} to Decimal so I guess django is passing through the entire cleaned_data form to Decimal method. Not sure where I'm going wrong - the code I'm working with is: def clean_order_price(self): cleaned_data = self.cleaned_data data = self.data order_price = cleaned_data.get("order_price") if not order_price: try: existing_price = ProductCostPrice.objects.get(supplier=data['supplier'], product_id=cleaned_data['product'], is_latest=True) except ProductCostPrice.DoesNotExist: existing_price = None if not existing_price: raise forms.ValidationError('No match found, please enter new price') else: if data['invoice_type'] == 1: return existing_price.cost_price_gross elif data['invoice_type'] == 2: exchange = EuroExchangeRate.objects.latest('exchange_date') calc = exchange.exchange_rate * float(existing_price.cost_price_gross) calc = Decimal(str(calc)) return calc return cleaned_data If the invoice is of type 2 (a euro invoice) then the system should grab the latest exchange rate and apply that to the matching UK pound price pulled through to get euro result. The model object I pass in will be one of 3 or 4 tables, however when I call GetFIelds - internally for each object I know what fields will be there i.e. list.add(new Field{name = "id", value = "5"}); list.add(new Field{name = "nameofcompany", value = "super guys"});

• How to break whenever any line of code executes

  I have a very strange bug, which I believe is caused by some code we have executing, but I'm not sure where. We can reproduce it to the point it happens whenever we click Tab, but short of putting a break point at the beginning of every method in the project to find out what is executing. Is there a way to set visual studio to break whenever anything executes? For those curious about the problem, every now and then, we have a few Rich Text Boxes that refuse to lose focus. You can't click out of it or tab out of it. We have no On Validation or On Text Changed events attached to the control, and believe it's an event attached somewhere else to something we just aren't noticing.
