  We are a small company with very limit funds. In order to improve our server reliability, we are studying to migrate to CLOUD. We seen some CLOUD provider, they would charge by resources such as, CPU, RAM.....Disk space....High Availability....etc. We have server team, so we also consider to built the private CLOUD, we seen the Windows 8 server, it does need license fee. So we looking at Linux side, we look at Ubuntu and OpenStack. What is the different between Ubuntu and OpenStack solutions? • Is my laptop good enough to support my development needs? [closed]

  I have an ASUS Pentium-R Dual Core CPU running at 2.20Ghz. It has 4 gb of built in ram, currently running a 64 bit Windows 7 . I just started graduate school and Im wondering whether I should go in for a new laptop or just repair the nagging battery on my current one. My requirements include - -Ability to support IDE's - I may end up running Eclipse, Visual Studio's and the like to help with my work. - Ability to run multiple VM's (not concurrently). Im currently running a Ubuntu 12 and 9 as VM's (not sure if this is overloading the system) - I'm a non gamer so I really dont care about a minor glitch caused by running a uber heavy game. -In addition I will have heavy use of Office Application Software and will be using my computer to watch movies and stream media. • How can I create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive? (With NTFS + USB Drive support)

  My motherboard got fried and I was forced to get a new hardware set (MB+CPU+RAM) so in most likelyhood I'll need to reinstall my Windows 7. I usually follow procedure and put the OS on the primary partition and my data on a logical partition - so I can format the primary without concern - but this time I made a mistakte and left some crucial items on the primary partition. I want to create a bootable CD-ROM/USB Drive which can read NTFS so I can access this data. If booting via a CD-ROM, I would prefer being able to connect a disk-on-key/My Passport to the computer and be able to access it to transfer the data to it. How can I do it? (free 3rd party applications are most welcome)

• Server periodically freezing - Help Stabilizing

  We run an asp.net/sql server data collection website with a hand full of clients dumping data in and running reports. We moved to a new server (specs below) and have had issues with it freezing and having to reboot it a dozen times over the pass six months. The hosting company has mentioned possible causes (listed below) but cant give a definite answer on what is going wrong. They have offered to reconfigure how ever I like. We have benefited from having a much faster system and really dont want to get rid of the ssd's unless they are the issue. Two possible setup changes that I've talked with them about are also listed below. Any suggestions on what maybe causing the freezing issue as well as suggestion on a new setup would be great. My main questions are: Do SSD generally have problems running the OS & SQL Server on the same RAID Array? and Are the new SSD's still unrefined enough to be running in a production environment? • Is there anyway that I can set the 'real' memory usage value while running my java code?

  I'm running a code on a server to generate a 10,000x10,000 matrix and save each value into a table (MySQL). I was informed by the administrator that I can use up to 32g of the physical memory of our server but have no idea how to do it. I googling around and so far only found information about setting the virtual memory using -Xmx. I tried it anyway and using top command I got this: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3981 gv 35 15 32.4g 304m 10m S 1 0.5 9:54.84 java So, it shows that the -Xmx set the VIRT and not the RES value. Is there anyway that I can set the RES value into 32g?

• Does it make a difference to read from a file instead of from MySQL?

  My web server currently is quite loaded. And I have a PHP file that is accessed very often remotely. The PHP file basically makes a MySQL query and returns a JSON formatted string. I am thinking to use a Cron job to write the necessary data into a file every 15 mins, so the PHP file doesn't make a MySQL query, instead it reads from the file. Does it make a difference? I mean to alleviate the server loading (CPU/MySQL) a bit?

• SSH logins failing before success

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 Server, updated, to run a webserver on Tomcat 7. I have about 1000 clients that are very very often using an RSYNC program to sync some file with this server. Those RSync are using SSH with a certain user to open connections on the server. The result is that my server is, as normal, full of connections by the same user. About 5 connections per 1 second every day any time. Then, when I try to open a regular SSH connection with my Putty client, the connection fails before login saying "Server unexpectedly closed network connection", about 6 times for 10 attemps, anbd for 4 attemps out of 10, it works normally and I am able to login as any user. Is there a overload of connections here? The server statistics are very calm saying less then 40% of network usage and less of 2% CPU. How can I improve this? Thank you for any help. V.

  I run a windows 2008 webserver and would like to setup the most basic performance monitoring in the world. What i would like is: a plot of ASP.Net request time for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of CPU% utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of Memory utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of network utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period a plot of disk utilisation for each w3wp process for a 24hour period I would these plots to be emailed to me each morning. • Error installing SQL Server 2005 Express on AMD Turion?

  Hello. Is there some compatibility problem between SQL Server 2005 Express and AMD processors? I read something along those lines on various sites, but found nothing 100% definitive. I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express on a computer that runs Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit edition, and the CPU is "AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70". I tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit installers, just in case, and the process runs fine until the moment the service attempts to start, where it fails with the same error every time. I'm sorry I can't provide more details or the exact message, it was on a client computer to which I have no access at the moment. I hope someone could shed some light on this. Thank you.

• Few questions about backing up the OS

  I'm running windows 7 with 2gb memory and 2.50 Ghz dual core cpu. here are my question regarding backing up an entire drive. I plan to use Macrium Reflect because its free. And I can't afford to buy one. If I backup a hard drive would I only be able to backup the partition where the operating system is? If I have installed applications which requires activation keys, and I have already installed an activation key. Does backing the hard drive also backup those application, so that I won't have to re-apply the keys later? If I have a multi-boot system, would the backup also include those other OS that are installed in my hard drive? Can I still boot into them after restoring the image? Do you have any links there that could enlighten me on what drive backup really is. Thanks!

• I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

  I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction. • Very high Magento/Apache memory usage even without visitors (are we fooled by our hosting company?)

  I am no server guy and we have issues with our speed so I come here asking for advise. We have a VPS with 2 cores and 2gb of RAM at a Magento specialized hosting company. Over the course of the last weeks our site speed has gotten worse, even though our store is new, has less than 1000 SKUs and not even 100 visitos a day. At magespeedtest.com we only get 1.87 trans/sec @ 2.11 secs each with a mere 5 concurrent users. Our magento log files are clean, we have no huge database tables or anything like that. When we take a look at our server real time stats, we see that the memory usage jumped up from about 34% to 71% and now 82% in just a few days in idle, with no visitors on the site. Our hosting company said that we do not need to worry about that as it`s maybe related to mysql which creates buffers (which are maybe not even actually being used) and what is important is CPU and swap - stats are ok here. They also said that the low benchmark scores are caused by bad extensions or template modifications on our side. We are not sure if we can trust that statement as we only have 4 plugins installed (all from aheadworks and amasty which are known to be one of the best magento extension developers). Our template modifications are purely html and css, no modifications to the php code. Our pagespeed is ranked with 93/100 in firebug and Magento is properly configured, so the problem really just gets obvious when there are a handful of users on the site at the same time. Can anyone confirm our hosting`s statement about memory usage and where can I start looking for a solution?

• Timing startup processes?

  My Windows 7 use to boot up fast and now its getting rather slow. I suspect one program is eating up all the time yet i cant tell what it is since task manager shows <40% of the cpu being used. What can i use to track how long each process takes when my computer boots/starts up? Note: Except for launchy which i used before my comp became slow, all my startup and services are all signed and known (broadcom, VMWare, Google Inc, Intel, etc) Note2: I am mostly considering the time it takes after i login but i suspect the time before that is slightly slower (i dont think very much though)

• Openvpn client-to-client connection reencrypted at Server?

  currently i'm using a site-2-site openvpn setup. The routers en/decrypt all traffic that goes from one net to another. One of them is the Openvpn server. This works but performance is not as good as possible. I think the limiting factor is the cpu power of the router. Would it be better if i use client-to-client connections and access the fileserver in the one net from a pc in the other, because the openvpn-server does not have to decrypt the (whole) packets?

• DIagnosing another Windows 7 Lockup

  Im running windows 7 on a fairly modern machine (8gb ram, amd fx-6100, gtx 560ti) and I notice that periodically my windows seems to just hang for a little while. Frequently this occurs after a cold boot and i start up five or six small to medium sized programs, but also occasionally it occurs during normal usage. Basically what occurs is the screen locks up, there is no keyboard responsiveness for a period of 30 seconds to a full minute - after a bit of patience, control is returned, but I'm interested in figuring out what is causing such lockups. I checked the event log and dont see any issues, and all i can see in task manager is a spike in cpu and memory usage right after this occurs. Any tips on how to even begin to diagnose this? Thanks.

• What do BCU.exe and BCUService actually do?

  I've got a Gigabyte G32M-ES2L motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2.93GHz CPU running Windows XP SP3 (fully up to date). Today when I booted the machine my firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall) warned me that BCUService.exe wanted to make a call out to the internet. Wondering what they were I did a Google search and while I found out that these programs weren't malware, I didn't find out what they actually do. The information seemed to boil down to: Part of Browser Configuration Utility Auto-recovery Service from DeviceVM, Inc. This program is not important for your system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems. Source So before I remove them from my system does anyone know what they actually do and its it worth them taking over 4Mb of memory?

  I'm new to VMWare stuff. What I need to do is pretty basic: Just to install two different Windows 2008 versions on a server with 2x 4core CPU and 2x 3TB hard disks. I asked my datacenter to install the free version (VMware ESXi 4.1) but apparently it did not recognize 3TB disks. Now I'm wondering whether VMWare 5 can handle 3TB disks, and if so, what variant?   Hello, I currently run a server at home consisting of SQL Server 2008 .net Framework 2010 VPN Connection ASP.net Web Services running around 5-6 applications supporting a financial trading system that i regularly use. THe only user is me. Recently the requirement to have these applications running in a 24/7 100% uptime (or 99%) environment has become important. No longer can I both meet this requirement and host my server at home on my network - so i am looking to move to a dedicated hosting company. After some research, the only real companies I can find offering such services are geared towards company web-space hosting. I don't need 1TB+ bandwidth, what i need is CPU, Memory and as much control over the environment as possible. Does anyone have any examples of such a service? Thanks in advance.

• rsync stuck with the --checksum option

  I use back-in-time to backup my Linux installation. It serves as an advanced wrapper for the rsync command. Today I tried to add /var/log to the list of folders to be backed up and it caused some serious performance problems. The job seems to stuck on a particular file and the CPU usage of the rsync parent process reaches 100%. I then used lsof to see which file caused the problem and it seems to be the /var/log directory. I did some googling and some experiments with the different rsync options and found --checksum to be the offender. Without the parameter, an incremental backup finishes properly in minutes. With it, the process will stuck when rsync tries to sync a constantly changing log file. This kind of make sense, but it still seems to be a bug to me. Am I using the option correctly? Is there a workaround for this?

• Low end dedicated GPU vs. integrated Intel graphics (for light CAD work)

  I have been asked to spec a PC for an interior design business. They are going to do some AutoCAD work (but they won't be using massive datasets or anything), and also use Kitchen Draw, a program that has 3D visualization features and says, in its requirements, that "a recent NVidia or ATI card might be enough". Since they are very limited budget-wise, I had originally picked a GeForce GT 610 card, but this card is so low end that I'm left wondering whether it will be an improvement at all over the dedicated Intel HD2500 graphics chip that comes with the CPU (I will be using an Ivy-Bridge Intel i5). Most of the information I see around is for gaming, which isn't really relevant in my case. Basically, for the use case I've described (light 3D work), can one get away with a current Intel HD graphics chipset? And will a low end GPU like the GT 610 provide a noticeable improvement?

• My Computer will not turn on?

  I recently built a gaming pc. It was working fine before the following events: I installed a graphics card driver update then: in windows it said that the user experience index needed to be refreshed, so i started the test and somewhere in the middle of the test my pc just switched off. No shutting down just stopped. Now it won't turn back on. I have checked its plugged in and the switch on psu is down, i tried a different power cable and i checked all the connections. When i press the power button nothing happens, no fans no lights no post beep. • moving from WinXP to WinServer in VmWare

  I have a Vmware machine for.Net application testing. Current setup: Host OS: win7 Guest OS: Right now the guest OS is Win Xp Pro x64, which runs great with just 1 gigabyte of RAM and 10 gigs of disk space. * This part can be skipped * As I said, there was a program that I needed to test, but unfortunately, by default, Vmware installs crappy display drivers(called SVGA II) on XP machines and there is NO way to upgrade them! This resulted in my program's error (the program used SlimDX (DirectX wrapper) to do some stuff..). Eventually I found out that display drivers most certainly is the problem. For example, Windows 7 virtual machine uses SVGA 3D drivers and I have NO problems running my SlimDX-based program. Now, regarding Windows Server 2008! Apparently, WDDM driver is supported by WS2008, which means that I'll be able to install SVGA 3D and to test my DX apps. * end of skip * The questions are: Will WS2008 be as smooth with just 1 gig of RAM just like Win XP was? Will 10 gigs of HDD be enough? Or the server requires more? Will I be able to install .Net ver. 4 on WS2008? Are there any limitations that I need to be aware of as a .Net programmer? EDIT: I was hoping that WS2008 is XP-based, not Vista-vased/W7-based. In comparison, W7 virtual machine with 2 gigs of RAM and 2 proc cores nearly kills my Host OS. Whereas, WinXp runs extremely fast even with 1 core and 1 gig of RAM. That's the main reason why I want to try WS2008..

• Hardware advice for bitmap / openGL image processing server?

  I am trying to work out a build for a processing server to handle bitmap processing as well as openGL rendering for chroma-keying images and Photoshop automation. My searches here and on Google have turned up surprisingly few results, and seeing that there aren't tags for bitmap or image processing I take it this is a specialized application. The bitmap processing is very cpu-intensive while the chroma-keying and Photoshop stuff is gpu-intensive. I doubt this is a case of over-optimization as our company batches thousands of images a day (currently on individual workstations) and any saving in processing time and workstation down-time would be beneficial. Does anyone have any experience with this type of processing server? Any special considerations that would go into a build like this or am I over-thinking it?
