• NerdDinner difficulties

- by George
Hello guys, I'm having a problem with the Create method of the NerdDinner tutorial, which is very good BTW. As you can see here http://nerddinnerbook.s3.amazonaws.com/Part5.htm in the Create method, he removed the ID field of the aspx page. I did that too, but I cannot add any dinners because I get a primary key violation. How is NerdDinner controlling the ids of each dinner? I revised the tutorial and could not see any references to identity fields on SQL database. I even created a method to get me the highest id in the table: public int GetHighestDinnerId() { int resultado = (from dinner in dataContext.Dinners select dinner.DinnerId).Max(); return resultado; } which does not work either. Any thoughts? Thank you

• URL Encoding - Illegal Character Replacement

- by ThePower
Hi, I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls. I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for ' E.G. If I was to use the following: Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?" Dim url As String = String.Format("~/books/{0}/{1}/default.aspx", bookID, name) Response.Redirect(url) I've tried wrapping url like this: Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.UrlEncode(url) And Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.HTMLEncode(url) Thanks in advance. P.S. Happy Christmas

• string extension method - Not available through WebMethod

- by Peter Bridger
I've written a simple extension method for a web project, it sits in a class file called StringExtensions.cs which contains the following code: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Web; ///
/// Useful extensions for string ///
static class StringExtensions { ///
/// Is string empty ///
/// /// <returns></returns> public static bool IsEmpty(this string value) { return value.Trim().Length == 0; } } I can access this extension method from all the classes I have within the App_Code directory. However I have a web page called JSON.aspx that contains a series of [WebMethods] - within these I cannot see the extension method - I must be missing something very obvious!

• Maintaining session across relay domain?

- by Steffen
I'm building a payment page in asp.net, however the page where you order your items is run in HTTP (non-secure) on my domain. When redirecting the user to the payment site, I have to go through a different domain (my payment provider, from whom I borrow the SSL certificate), so my payment url ends up like https://www.paymentprovider.com/somescript.cgi/www.mydomain.com/mypaymentpage.aspx Now the problem is my session is lost, but I store the order in session, so I desperately needs it. Can I somehow send the SessionID in querystring, and restore the session from it - or do I need to stuff the entire order into querystring ? (Not too certain it'll fit though, it's rather long) Any help will be highly appreciated :-)

• How do I use .NET to find an orange ball in an image?

- by JohnS
I'm getting images from a C328R camera attached to a small arduino robot. I want the robot to drive towards orange ping-pong balls and pick them up. I'm using the C# code supplied by funkotron76 at http://www.codeproject.com/KB/recipes/C328R.aspx. Is there a library I can use to do this, or do I need to iterate over every pixel in the image looking for orange? If so, what kind of tolerance would I need to compensate for various lighting conditions? I could probably test to figure out these numbers, but I'm hoping someone out there knows the answers.

• Using Application Settings and reading defaults from app.config

- by Peter Goras
Hi, I need to deploy a Windows Forms application using ClickOnce deployment. (VS2008, .NET 3.5) And I need to provide a configuration file for this app that any user can modify. For this reason, I am using Application Settings instead of standard appSetttings in app.config so I can separate the the user config from app config. see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms228995(VS.80).aspx Creating a Settings.settings file using VS generated a class with hard-coded default values like this: [global::System.Configuration.DefaultSettingValueAttribute("blahblah")] public string MyProperty ... WTF? I want to read the default values from the app.config! So I created my own class deriving from ApplicationSettingsBase but I cannot get this to read values from the app.config. Any ideas?

• MVC MapPageRoute and ActionLink

- by Dismissile
I have created a page route so I can integrate my MVC application with a few WebForms pages that exist in my project: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); // register the report routes routes.MapPageRoute("ReportTest", "reports/test", "~/WebForms/Test.aspx" ); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); } This has created a problem whenever I use Html.ActionLink in my Views: <%: Html.ActionLink("Home", "Index", "Home") %> When I load the page in the browser the link appears like: http://localhost:12345/reports/test?action=Index&controller=Home Has anyone run into this before? How can I fix this?

• Add client-side events to ASP.Net custom control at runtime

- by nw
I'm building an ASP.net custom control that implements IScriptControl. I would like other users of my control to be able to assign client-side event handlers to the control. Unfortunately the JS generated by IScriptControl is always injected at the very bottom of the rendered page (see below), so any attempt to assign an event handler in the ASPX page fails because the code executes too early. ... What's the right way to assign an event handler to the instantiated control upon page load?

• Best way to implement a 404 in ASP.NET

- by Ben Mills
I'm trying to determine the best way to implement a 404 page in a standard ASP.NET web application. I currently catch 404 errors in the Application_Error event in the Global.asax file and redirect to a friendly 404.aspx page. The problem is that the request sees a 302 redirect followed by a 404 page missing. Is there a way to bypass the redirect and respond with an immediate 404 containing the friendly error message? Does a web crawler such as Googlebot care if the request for a non existing page returns a 302 followed by a 404?

• How to display the properties of a Scheduled Task?

- by TooFat
I have C# app that uses a Form to set a bunch of settings. Those settings can be read by a Console App so it can run via the built in Windows Task Scheduler. I would like to be able to simply open up a scheduled task as if I had just opened it from the gui in Windows so the user can set all the settings for the scheduled task. I know I can use a library like http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/tsnewlib.aspx but I would rather not have to recreate all the options in a WinForm when everything is already available in Windows. Does anyone know how I can programattically display the built in Windows Task Scheduler from C#?

• Use XSLT to arrange a list of items in a table

- by Mark Sp
I have a linear list of items which I wish to arrange in a table using XSLT. I wish to specify the number of columns as a parameter. For example, if I have a list of 12 items, I can select a 2x6, 3x4, 4x3 or 6x2 table. I cannot see a general way to do this. I have seen this article: http://www.nedcomp.nl/support/origdocs/xml4/extracted/xpath_hdi_1_4llx.aspx It tells you how to generate a table with a specific number of columns, but does not allow a general case. (Ideally there would be a loop for the xsl:value-of lines). Thanks Mark

• Coding Standards

- by kevchadders
For those of us that have programmed enough I’m sure we have come across many different flavours of coding standards that you can use when it comes to programming. e.g. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229042.aspx You might derive your coding standards for the current company you work for or from the original author of the code you’re working on. Coding styles are often used for specific program languages and some styles in one coding language might not be considered appropriate for others. Of course some coding standards can be applied across many different program languages. My question is do you have any good advice/links yourselves to a set of coding standards that you would recommend to others, or best practices to follow? Thank you for your time. EDIT: As we know there are many related articles on this subject, but C# Coding standard / Best practices in SO has some very useful links in there which is worth a visit. • delphi tidhttp get procedure not working on some urls

- by davy yabut
Hi guys, I am encountering a problem in delphi Tidhttp component wherein the GET procedure cant fetch a specific url but on other urls it is working. Example this code cant fetch the error_url but if you change the error_url to any valid url its working: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject); var Response : TStringStream; error_url: string; begin error_url := 'http://www.chefscatalog.com/international/home.aspx'; //error url Response := TStringStream.Create; try IdHTTP1.Get(error_url, Response); Memo1.Text := Response.DataString; finally FreeAndNil(Response); end; end; By the way idHTTP1 redirect property is set here to true so redirection is not the problem. you can download the source code (which is indytest.zip) of this project in this link http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=534933 Please help me guys. Thanks in advance :)

• ASP.NET Page Unauthorization for common pages

- by Mahesh
Hi I am developing a web application which has form based authentication. All pages needs to be authenticated except AboutUs and ContactUs pages. Since I am denying all users in authorization section, application is redirecting even if the customer browse AboutUs and ContactUs pages. Configuration Rules <authentication mode= "Forms"> <forms name=".ASPXAUTH" loginUrl="Login.aspx" timeout="20" protection="All" slidingExpiration="true" /> </authentication> <authorization> <deny users="?" /> </authorization> Could you please let me know how can I tell asp.net to remove these pages for authorization?? • IIS 7.0 - Every site suddenly redirecting root request to forms authentication

- by Pittsburgh DBA
Suddenly, IIS 7.0 is redirecting every request for the root of any domain hosted on the box to ~/Account/Logon, which is our Forms Authentication redirect. Additionally, some JavaScript and image requests are being similarly redirected, but not other aspx pages. This is not desirable. Nobody will admit to changing anything. Any ideas? EDIT: It turns out that something has gone wrong with the disk permissions. Can anyone point me to the way things are supposed to be in Windows Server 2008 for a standard ASP.Net installation? The disk permissions are out of whack now.

• ASP.NET MVC UpdateModel - fields vs properties??

- by mrjoltcola
I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() did not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. SOLVED: MVC.NET does indeed handle inherited properties just fine. This turned out to have nothing to do with inheritance. My base class was implemented with public fields, not properties. Switching them to formal properties (adding {get; set; }) was all I needed. This has bitten me before, I keep wanting to use simple, public fields. I would argue that fields and properties are syntactically identical, and could be argued to be semantically equivalent, for the user of the class.

• System.UnauthorizedAccessException from Serial Port in VB.NET

- by psuhas
I am using VB.NET 2008 Express Edition to access Serial Port which is a USB to Serial port. Since this is removable, the app user can disconnect it at any time in app. I am getting an unhandled exception when I remove the USB Serial Port. After research, it seems like a known problem in .NET (even in 3.5) I am looking for some solution to get this done. I have already tried the app.config solution that was suggested and it does not work Here is the link for issue http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/Validation.aspx?FeedbackID=140018

• .NET Remoting Client's Problem when running on the machine with Multi NICs

- by cui chun
I built a .NET Remoting Client which works quite fine on the machine of single NIC, and lots of testing messages received via remoting event. But when additional NIC was added, the Client seemed to be able to connect the remoting Server, but the testing messages cannot arrive anymore. From debugging, the server end did trigger the event but the client didn't get that. Checking from google and find that a similar problem report: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/aspnet/2/10061570/reply.aspx I just wonder if any solutions? Thanks in advance!

• CSS Relative sized header/footer

- by superexsl
Hi I'm not a CSS expert so I might be missing something obvious. I'm trying to set a relative size header and footer (so that on larger monitors, the header and footer are larger than on smaller screens). To do this, I'm using a percentage height. However, this only works if I set the position to absolute. The problem is, setting it to absolute means that it overlaps the main part of the screen (inbetween the header and footer). Setting it to relative doesn't work since it relies on items being inside the header/footer. This is what my header looks like: .header { position:absolute; top:0px; background-color:white; width:100%; height:30%; } the ASPX page simply contains

Is there a way to get relatively proportioned header and footers? Thanks

• Website settings for running visual web as root?

- by Curtis White
Scott Gu explains how to run visual web developer using a root path, here: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/19/tip-trick-how-to-run-a-root-site-with-the-local-web-server-using-vs-2005-sp1.aspx This worked exactly as he described in one instance for me. But, today I do not see this option. More over, I do not think I have a solution file, and I think that has something to do with it. I'm aware there are web application projects and web site model, and web site model is basically just a "directory". But can web site model, also, have a solution file for this setting or not a solution file? What determines that? I am interested in using this method on on a web site, i.e directory only model.

• CKEditor 3.2 is un-editable in jQuery simpleModal

- by Gal V
Hello all, I noticed that this isn't the first time that this issue comes up, but I still couldn't find the right and working solution for me. Here is the thing- In my ASP.NET aspx page I created a div element, with a <cc1:CKEditor> control tag within it. This div is hidden, and is attached to a jQuery SimpleModal plugin. The problem is- that when I trigger the modal-opening and the modal shows up with the editor within it, the editor is UNEDITABLE, locked. How can I fix it, and enable the editing in the CKEditor's textarea? Thanks in advance!
