• Why do my numbered headings break when I apply a watermark?

  I have an MS Word 2010 document. I am editing it in compatibility mode. I have heading 1s as a numbered list. When I apply a watermark to the document the headings break. The number and background shading remain correct, but the text "collapses" - so the word "Introduction" appears one letter wide with all letters drawn one on top of the other (you can open Font properties for the headings and see the entire word in the preview; font spacing shows as normal). Why does this happen? Windows 7, SP1. Opening doc over network from Sharepoint.

• Mass change Microsoft DNS & IIS server settings

  I need to change about 100 DNS records and IIS configurations on a Windows 2003 web server. The gui doesn't accommodate it and the MS command line tools seem incomplete (for example: dnscmd cannot edit a record, only create). Is there a third party tool out there I can use? Basically I just need to change one IP address to another. <vent It's frustrating that what would take a simple search and replace in Linux is this massive exercise under Windows. I mean IIS 6 wasn't Microsoft's first web platform! What were they thinking??? </vent

• activesync not working with forms based authentication

  I have an Exchange 2003 SP2 single backend server with an SSL cert. I was having trouble getting OMA to work so I found a MS article about making a reg hack and creating a new Exchange-OMA virtual directory. I am able to connect and access content from my mailbox by using secure mail.domainname.com/oma and using my credentials. ActiveSync was not working on a Windows mobile phone or iPhone. I found another article about using Forms Based Authenication and SSL on a single Exchange server environment and the fix was to elliminate FBA and SSL for the Exchange virtual directory. That allows ActiveSync to now work. I have very few mobile users, but they are management, so I need to make ActiveSync work but I would like to get back to using SSL. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379 Any ideas about this setup? • Need help with Microsoft Access 07 & Reports

  I'm finding it difficult to get MS reporting working to what I'd like to show. What I'm trying to do is: a) In my database store a URL file (HTTP external file), that is a .jpeg. I'd like to use that URL to call the image on the report sheet. I have tried to use 'Control source' on the data panel, but with no success. Any way I can get Dynamic Images to show up on each database. Also, I have a couple of Relational Databases. One Defines Values: For Example: DefinePets('petID','Name of Pet') The other one links the Main DB with the 'DefinePets' database. Eg: connect('petID','mainID','extraFeild') I'd like my report to Go into the "connect" Table, where the the currently viewed Record Value = mainID, then find petID and return Name of Pet. There is a many to many link between definePets and the main Table. (Therefore connect is joining them up) Or is that too much to ask from a simple package like Access?

• User for MSSQL 2008 Service Accounts

  I want to create a Domain User that runs the SQL Service Accounts. The reason for this is that I have setup mirroring and MS recommends having the same user (a domain user account) running the services across all the the computers in the configuration to ensure mirroring will work properly. Right now in the test environment I just had them run under my user for simplicity. But now that I know what I am doing I would like to test the configuration more accurately. I am also aware that it makes things much simpler if this user is an administrator. My question is. Should I just create a simple user SQLSERVICEUSER and make it an administrator? Seems a little insecure to me. Anyone have a more elegant solution?

  I want to use WIFI for HiDef video, but I don't trust it for my office PC's. I've heard of VLANs but I have no idea how to set it up or what (SOHO) hardware to buy. Other than getting 2 different DSL lines, how can I be absolutely sure that the PC side doesn't get hacked? What if I want to use MS Home server as a backup device for both sides? Can I make it "read only" for the PC side, and physically change the cable if I need to restore? TW

• Windows 2008 R2 DS in 2003 domain?

  Hi, Having a master domain controller running Windows 2003, and now I'd like to set up a new domain controller on a branch office. I really only have access to licenses for Windows 2008 R2 (through licensing.microsoft.com), so question is if a newly installed Windows 2008 Standard R2 can become a domain controller in the existing (2003) domain? First I tried adprep /forestprep on the newly installed 2008, but it complained about not being a domain controller. I then tried dcpromo, but it too complained about it. According to MS documentation, it seems I have to run 'adprep /forestprep' on the master domain controller, and adprep is located in 2008 installation DVD. Am I on the right track? Is the correct way to mount the 2008 installation dvd into the existing 2003 master controller, and run 'adprep /forestprep' on it there? Will I be able to run dcpromo on the 2008 once that has been completed? Thanks,

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200.   Hi, I have a windows server 2003 where I have to create a MAPI profile to read incoming emails of exchange 2007, using a custom utility. So I want the mail icon to appear in the control panel to configure e-mail accounts. I googled a lot and seems that there was a way to do it with an utility called newprof.exe but it is no longer available: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306962 I don't have an outlook license so I need a free way to create MAPI profiles in this server, either installing a free client or some ms tool. • Visio 2013 - how to rotate the entire page?

  I would like to rotate an entire page, including all of the shapes and text on it. I see here that you can supposedly hold down Control and click-drag the corner of the page to do it: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/visio-help/rotate-a-page-HP085050946.aspx ... however I can't get this to work. Hovering over the corner does nothing initially, and when I hold Control the cursor becomes a scale/resize icon, rather than a rotate icon (per the MS article I linked to above). I have tried other modifier key combinations while hovering, but nothing seems to produce the rotate icon mentioned.

• xDebug on Zend Server CE under Windows XP

  I have Zend Server installed on my Windows XP development machine, installed when I was naive and didn't know that Eclipse was going to become so suck so badly for PHP development. I've made the upgrade to Netbeans, but for debugging they only support xDebug. To be fair I've never used "proper" debuggers before, but other folks have raved about them so I thought I'd give it a try. I followed some directions on the Zend forum about how to install xDebug on Zend server, disabling Zend Debugger in the process. The xDebug "custom installation instructions" wizard tells me that my PHP was compiled with an unsupported compiler (MS VC8), and won't let me download anything. I tried a couple of the other xDebug binaries, but they just refused to load. So I'm left without a debugger option. Does anyone know how I can change the compiler of the php version I have installed so I can use a debugger in Netbeans? or how else i can get xDebug to install on Zend Server?

  Hello, I have 2 client compters running XP and MS office with Outlook 2007. I have a 2003 server running exchange. Clients e-mail account was removed on clients computer. But the e-mails are still on server as I see the mailbox with approx 14k of mail How do I restore the e-mail account on clients and retrieve the e-mail from server. I did not set up the outlook or exchange, so I do not know the e-mail settings. Any help? Chris

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• Access losing db connections

  I have a weird problem going on at work. People have been using MS Access to connect to sql server db and lately people are getting sporadic problems with connecting to the servers. It's not always the same users and it's not always a problem, which makes it a real pain to try to solve. One example of a related problem. A person has a linked table to a table and she would filter the table or write a query on the table to return where itemsku = 'ABCD1234'. It would return one record but the ItemSku LMKN7486 and everytime it would return the wrong record but consistently the wrong record so itemsku abcd1234 always returned LMNK7486 One would think it might be a driver problem, but it also could be a user problem. Just posting the question to see if anyone else has had similar senerios. Thanks

  I have an xml file that I need to edit using Microsoft Word 2003. Everything works fine but the CDATA section is lost and is converted to normal html. For example <Description> <![CDATA[ <i> ]]> </Description> Gets converted to <Description> <i> </Description> Is there any way to preserve the CDATA section while editing in MS Word.   I'm using MS Office Outlook 2007. I check my "Junk E-mail" folder ~once a month. This time I found that my whole google groups correspondence is there. I right-clicked a message and pressed "Add sender to safe senders list". Hopefully, the future messages to this group will be delivered to my inbox. The problem is with the messages that are already in the junk folder. Is there a way to resort my junk folder automatically, to have e-mails from senders listed on my safe list being recovered from the junk folder and moved to e.g. Inbox folder ? Thanks in advance.

• Inserting a very long Excel table into Word

  I have a very long excel (2003) s/sheet with in excess of 600 rows that I want to paste into an MS Word document (also 2003). However, I want to ensure that: 1) The header row appears automatically at the top of each page. 2) The s/sheet automatically formats to the correct page width (the one I have is slightly wider than my Word page). This can obviously be done manually by cutting and pasting each page seperately but this is very laborious and time consuming and I once saw somebody achieve this automatically (maybe with a macro) but have been unable to locate them, or the methodology. • Simple, user friendly and strong file encryption in Windows

  I want a colleague of mine to send me a sensitive MS-Word document via e-mail. Since Word's encryption is questionable, I would like to encrypt the file using a passphrase. Do you know of any user-friendly encryption tool that a novice user can easily use? I wouldn't like to prompt for keys or anything like this - just provide simple interface for single file encryption. EDIT: I have solved this using Putty Secure Copy, through a Linux box I have somewhere. The user downloaded scp to the same directory where the file was, and I have send him the exact scp command by mail. Nice! • Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this.   Before deploying a Azure VM Role, we need to perform %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown But in my case the sysprep fails with the log file %windir%\system32\sysprep\Panther\setuperr.txt saying: 2012-07-05 08:03:57, Error [0x0f0073] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:Not running DLLs; either the machine is in an invalid state or we couldn't update the recorded state, dwRet = 31 2012-07-05 08:03:57, Error [0x0f00ae] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup external providers; hr = 0x8007001f I do not always want to create a new image. Is there any work around? I followed the instructions in MS support here and tried: %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:.\unattend.xml It did not work. Under certain circumstances, I need to tear down the VM Image from azure and re-deploy with some more changes. So sysprep has to run almost twice every week.

• Reinstallation version Windows 7?

  I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit os online and just received a DVD & Key Code sticker. The DVD label shows it to be a reinstallation DVD, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Dell branded and states that the DVD is only to be used to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. I built this PC & it previously has had XP Pro installed for the last several years. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with some Malware & made the mistake of attempting to reinstall the XP Pro only to find out that MS has locked out my key, the same one I have been using on this built PC for the last 3 years. The previous PC was built by a local PC builder & I just reinstalled the OS on the new system. Should I send this Win7 DVD back to where I bought it, or can I use it? What a mess, Thanks DWB

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. (never used it anyway) GPO link GPO Security Filterings

• ntpstat response fine but server time out of sync

  Hi, I found out that the ntpd service that I've set up a few weeks ago on a Centos5 machine doesn't correctly synchronize the server time. I detected an offset of more than 5 minutes (by stopping ntpd and executing ntpdate). After setting up the service I checked the setup via ntpstat: [xxxx@xxx ~]$ ntpstat -q synchronised to local net at stratum 11 time correct to within 10 ms polling server every 1024 s I repeated this check every day and it always showed this output. Doesn't this output tell me that the server time is sane?
