• Cinnamon Settings blank after update

  Using Ubuntu 12.04 with the cinnamon desktop, I installed the most recent updates and now when I open "System Settings" the entire window appears as a blank white screen. The headers for APPEARANCE, PREFERENCES, and HARDWARE are present, but the usual icons for *Background, *Hot Corners, *Printers, etc. are no longer visible. Some of these settings can still be altered via the terminal: cinnamon-settings backgrounds cinnamon-settings applets cinnamon-settings mouse and touchpad But other commands, such as cinnamon-settings hot corners are met with an error. This is obviously a problem with cinnamon, so I just want to bring it to attention and find out when they plan on fixing the bug. A workaround can be found on the web, but it seems way to risky to rely on.

• HP Envy Beats Edition can play CDs, but not DVDs

  After a fresh install, and various other tests (troubleshooting), I have concluded that my laptop (an HP Envy 14 - Beats Edtion) will not play DVDs, however it will play CDs. When I first got the laptop, up until recently it played DVDs perfectly, I doubt there is a hardware issue sees as it loads the DVDs and can view the files in them, but not play them, as well as read and work with CDs perfectly. Was there an update or something of the like that may have caused this? If so, is there a fix? I typically use this laptop 's HDMI out with my TV as a DVD player... so it would be very beneficial if there was a solution to this problem. There was a similar issue with the touchpad that there was a fix for... so I'm hoping that this is something similar

• Stuck on busybox after a fresh install

  I installed 11.10 and was getting stuck on Busybox unless I type exit. After grabbing the latest updates it then didn't get stuck on busybox but instead on a black screen of nothingness. I've now reformatted and started again using the exit technique for the time being. I had a search here before posting and none of the answers gave much insight, other than it 'could be a gfx card driver issue'. I'm using new hardware that has no issues with Mint, Win7 or WinXp. BUT note, I'm not dual booting, its a complete fresh install formatting the entire drive. Any help is appreciated as I'd really like to get stuck into Ubuntu. Thanks in advance. -Luke

• Toshiba satellite L500 no Wifi anymore!

  I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 with Ubuntu 12.04 and its wifi suddenly stopped working!! I've never seen like that before.. I tried also using external USB wifis but no success. I am not able to turn it on with the function keys nor using rfkill commands and similar WLAN manipulator Commands in the terminal! It was working before for at least 4-5 months!! The computer says it's turned off by hardware. I checked it and the Driver is fine. So why can i not use any Wifi on my computer?? Why it is suddenly disabled? I checked the BIOS too there is enabled the WLAN. I spent 10 hours for searching for solutions but i am out of ideas!!! Please Help!

• How is Sencha Touch performing on Android in practice ?

  Hi I'm just about to start a project using Sencha Touch, and just done some minor testing on my HTC desire device. All tutorial videos at Vimeo seems to be using an iPhone emulator running on a Mac. Im not sure how fast this emulator is compared to a real iPhone device or even an real Android device, but from what i have experienced, it seems that my HTC desire is not performing that nicly as this emulator. All animations (sliding, fading, etc) seems abit laggy. You can easily notice that the FPS is much less than on the Vimeo videos. HTC desire is a relativly new and modern Android 2.2 phone, running with decent hardware, so im wondering if Sencha Touch is "ready" for the Android platform. Anybody with practical experience with Android and Sencha Touch ?

• Studying parallel programming

  I'm currently finishing my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and thinking a lot about which specialisation to choose in my Master's degree. One subject I'm particularly interested in is parallel programming. However, this topic does not seem to be a standard topic in Computer Science degrees, although it is something that is used more and more - new processors nowadays are usually dual or quad cores. So I was wandering: does anybody know a good study program in this field? I was mostly looking for it at universities in Germany, but they tend to combine the application side with some type of engineering or natural science. Thus, programs are more the "Computational Engineering" or "Computational Science" type, but I'm more interested in the Computer Science part of it, i.e. parallel programming, languages and compilers, algorithms and hardware.

• What's a good starting point to learn about JIT compilers?

  I've spent the past few months learning about stack based virtual machines, parsers, compilers, and some elementary things about hardware architecture. I've also written a few parsers and compilers for C like languages to understand the generic parser/compiler pipeline. Now I'd like to take my understanding further by learning about optimizing compilers and JIT compilers but I'm having a hard time finding material at the right level. I don't yet understand enough to dive into a code base like PyPy or LuaJIT but I also know more than what most introductory compiler books have to offer. So what are some good books for an intermediate beginner like to me to look into?

• Confused with X.ORG version number

  There is my trouble: I'm trying to install ATI drivers on my Dell Vostro 3350 laptop. On the AMD's site I followed steps to determine which driver should I use. After selecting what hardware I use I got a link to download amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run and below was a description of that driver that it was compatible with X.Org version from 6.7 to 7.6. And I do not know what version of X.Org my Ubuntu uses. Cause after googling I found that version is 7.6 in Ubuntu 11.10. But after typing: X -version I got the output: X.Org X Server 1.10.4 Release Date: 2011-08-19 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 So what is the exact version of X.Org in Ubuntu 11.10 and how should one reliably determine it? Can anyone construe? Thanks.

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

• how to find available wireless networks

  I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 I've looked at other answers similar to this question how ever when I look at my network symbol it doesn't say anything that the answer below says "Make sure that your wifi hardware switch is on or not. It is either F2 or F12 or near to it. Once the switch is enabled, there is a small fan-like applet on the top panel (Gnome Network Manager), fourth from the right. Click on it and if there is no tick mark on the option 'Enable Wireless', enable it. Wait till your wifi connection name appears." it how says 'Enable Networking' my wi-fi switch is on and I've tried using terminal to kill the applet as another answer suggests trying. Does anyone have any other ideas that might help? Just in case anybodies curious as to how I'm posting this I'm on my other ubuntu laptop that's running an older version.

• 12.04 - how to install alsa 1.0.27, to resolve dell sound card microphone echo issue to local speaker?

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

• How do you forcibly unmount a disk when you press the eject button on an optical drive?

  When upgrading my hardware, I also upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. On my previous system (with 10.04 and earlier) when I ejected a disk from the optical drive, the subfolder in the /media directory was automatically removed. In my new 10.10 system, if I don't eject the disk using the "eject" command within the system, the disk remains mounted, even after a new disk is installed. The new drive is a Blu Ray drive, but I haven't noticed any other problems from it. Normally, this isn't a problem, but it makes installing applications that are spread over multiple CDs more difficult in many cases (i.e. Wine). Any advice?

• High Availability for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in the Cloud

  Outages, natural disasters and unforeseen events have proved that even in a distributed architecture, you need to plan for High Availability (HA). In this entry I'll explain a few considerations for HA within Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). In a separate post I'll talk more about Disaster Recovery (DR), since each paradigm has a different way to handle that. Planning for HA in IaaS IaaS involves Virtual Machines - so in effect, an HA strategy here takes on many of the same characteristics as it would on-premises. The primary difference is that the vendor controls the hardware, so you need to verify what they do for things like local redundancy and so on from the hardware perspective. As far as what you can control and plan for, the primary factors fall into three areas: multiple instances, geographical dispersion and task-switching. In almost every cloud vendor I've studied, to ensure your application will be protected by any level of HA, you need to have at least two of the Instances (VM's) running. This makes sense, but you might assume that the vendor just takes care of that for you - they don't. If a single VM goes down (for whatever reason) then the access to it is lost. Depending on multiple factors, you might be able to recover the data, but you should assume that you can't. You should keep a sync to another location (perhaps the vendor's storage system in another geographic datacenter or to a local location) to ensure you can continue to serve your clients. You'll also need to host the same VM's in another geographical location. Everything from a vendor outage to a network path problem could prevent your users from reaching the system, so you need to have multiple locations to handle this. This means that you'll have to figure out how to manage state between the geo's. If the system goes down in the middle of a transaction, you need to figure out what part of the process the system was in, and then re-create or transfer that state to the second set of systems. If you didn't write the software yourself, this is non-trivial. You'll also need a manual or automatic process to detect the failure and re-route the traffic to your secondary location. You could flip a DNS entry (if your application can tolerate that) or invoke another process to alias the first system to the second, such as load-balancing and so on. There are many options, but all of them involve coding the state into the application layer. If you've simply moved a state-ful application to VM's, you may not be able to easily implement an HA solution. Planning for HA in PaaS Implementing HA in PaaS is a bit simpler, since it's built on the concept of stateless applications deployment. Once again, you need at least two copies of each element in the solution (web roles, worker roles, etc.) to remain available in a single datacenter. Also, you need to deploy the application again in a separate geo, but the advantage here is that you could work out a "shared storage" model such that state is auto-balanced across the world. In fact, you don't have to maintain a "DR" site, the alternate location can be live and serving clients, and only take on extra load if the other site is not available. In Windows Azure, you can use the Traffic Manager service top route the requests as a type of auto balancer. Even with these benefits, I recommend a second backup of storage in another geographic location. Storage is inexpensive; and that second copy can be used for not only HA but DR. Planning for HA in SaaS In Software-as-a-Service (such as Office 365, or Hadoop in Windows Azure) You have far less control over the HA solution, although you still maintain the responsibility to ensure you have it. Since each SaaS is different, check with the vendor on the solution for HA - and make sure you understand what they do and what you are responsible for. They may have no HA for that solution, or pin it to a particular geo, or perhaps they have a massive HA built in with automatic load balancing (which is often the case).   All of these options (with the exception of SaaS) involve higher costs for the design. Do not sacrifice reliability for cost - that will always cost you more in the end. Build in the redundancy and HA at the very outset of the project - if you try to tack it on later in the process the business will push back and potentially not implement HA. • Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

I graduated in 2010 and obtained 2 Masters Degrees in Political Science and Economics. I would like to tell you more about my past and how I joined Oracle. In 2005 I began studying at the Faculty of Political Sciences Gdansk University. In 2008, I obtained a Bachelors Degree. During these three years I had the opportunity to go to England twice, where I worked as a Bartender, first in Blackpool and then in Manchester. This allowed me to improve my language skills and become more confident. In the meantime, I joined the International Student Organization-AIESEC, where I was organized conferences and conducted student projects. Also I met a mass of interesting people from around the world. After graduation in 2008, I was able to get an Internship within a big company in Poland. I worked there as an Intern in the Purchase Department. That was my first adventure within a corporate environment. I learnt a lot about purchasing processes and negotiations. In September 2008, I started studying two Masters Faculties: Political Science and Economics. It was very difficult, but it was not impossible. Over the next two years of studying I was able to go on a three month internship to India where I worked as a Marketing Assistant in an NGO. I was travelling around northern India and did presentations to the academic community about green energy and environmental projects. I had the opportunity to visit Nepal and walked in the Himalayas. That was a huge experience as well as a cultural shock. It taught me how to deal with many problems and to appreciate what I have. At the end of 2009 I was working as a Marketing Assistant for a Leasing company, where I learnt useful sales knowledge and improved my objection handling skills. In July 2010, I graduated with a double Masters and found a job in Thailand as Sales Representative in an IT company. I worked in Thailand until the end of January 2011. Besides that, I was working in an International company with interesting people and I had the opportunity to travel around Thailand and visit Cambodia. After this adventure I started looking for jobs in Europe where I could further develop my sales skills. I found Oracle and I don’t regret this decision which I made. I am currently working in Prague in an international Hardware team and I know that is not the end of my adventures. At this moment, I am working in a team of 12 members. Ten of them are based in Prague and 2 others are based in Russia. We come from different countries such as: Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. I am working on the Polish market, cooperating with our Hardware customers and partners. What do I enjoy the most about my job? • Asus 1215n GPU driver/s don't give me a "full" OS experience

  I'm use to not having specific drivers from a manufacture on my laptop when running a Linux OS and that has always been fine - there's been adequate FOSS drivers for my needs and it hasn't ruined any of my OS experience. When I bought an Asus 1215n one of the upsides to the hardware seemed to be the switchable GPU that could give lots of performance or lots more battery life and would switch on-the-fly... with Windows of course. Seems that the Nvidia driver are crap and people advise not installing them. I have some sort of workaround for vga_switcharoo (?) and the on-the-fly nature of the GPUs has turned in to a manual one :( The worst bit though (aside from shorter battery life) is the web experience with HTML5. If I visit Mozilla's Web O'Wonder site I'm told I don't have WebGL working due to driver issues. This really blows - is it possible that proprietary drivers can now ruin my web experience too?!

• How do I play HD video without it stuttering?

  Hello All, I want play a Blu Ray Video from my hard drive with Boxee, but it chokes all the time. I've tried to play it with others video players but it is the same. I think that is a 10gb .mkv file with 10Gb. Stuttering video with VLC , mplayer, and the default video player on ubuntu. I read in many Forums just can´t put this to work. Any idea? thanks. • Laptop works fine with ac adapter, hangs after login screen using battery

  I did an Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition clean install (amd64 version) on a notebook Medion Akoya E1311. With AC adapter everything works fine, but using battery, it hangs after login screen. I can type login, password too, and I can press login button. But then I can see mouse cursor and lower task bar, not upper, and nothing works. The only thing I can do is login on a terminal with ctrl+alt+F1, this is ok. Nothing seems alive on Gnome except mouse cursor. The only thing I did after Ubuntu fresh install was donwloading driver for RTL8191SE from Realtek web, because WiFi didn't work, now works fine, with ac adapter of course. Hardware is a Notebook Medion Akoya E1311 AMD Sempron 210U 1 GB DDR2 ATI RS690M (Radeon X1200 Series) Western Digital 160GB wireless RTL8191SEvB ethernet RTL8101E/RTL8102E
