  • WYSIHAT Photos upload not working - Paperclip - Ruby on Rails

    I just successfully installed WysiHat in my rails blog. Seems that the 'add a picture' feature is not working. It successfully allows me to find and select a picture from my desktop but upon clicking save, it does nothing. I also have Paperclip successfully installed. I am wondering if this may have something to do with it. Perhaps Paperclip is getting in the way, or, perhaps I need to connect Paperclip and WysiHat somehow. Any ideas? (let me know if I need to post any code). Also, WysiHat-engine uses facebox, not sure if that is relevant. UPDATE: Added Server Log, looks like paperclip is saving it so not sure what else is going wrong.   • PostgreSQL - Why are some queries on large datasets so incredibly slow

    Hello, I have two types of queries I run often on two large datasets. They run much slower than I would expect them to. The first type is a sequential scan updating all records: Update rcra_sites Set street = regexp_replace(street,'/','','i') rcra_sites has 700,000 records. It takes 22 minutes from pgAdmin! I wrote a vb.net function that loops through each record and sends an update query for each record (yes, 700,000 update queries!) and it runs in less than half the time. Hmmm.... The second type is a simple update with a relation and then a sequential scan: Update rcra_sites as sites Set violations='No' From narcra_monitoring as v Where sites.agencyid=v.agencyid and v.found_violation_flag='N' narcra_monitoring has 1,700,000 records. This takes 8 minutes. The query planner refuses to use my indexes. The query runs much faster if I start with a set enable_seqscan = false;. I would prefer if the query planner would do its job. I have appropriate indexes, I have vacuumed and analyzed. I optimized my shared_buffers and effective_cache_size best I know to use more memory since I have 4GB. My hardware is pretty darn good. I am running v8.4 on Windows 7. Is PostgreSQL just this slow? Or am I still missing something? Thanks! Brad

  • Class member functions instantiated by traits [policies, actually]

    I am reluctant to say I can't figure this out, but I can't figure this out. I've googled and searched Stack Overflow, and come up empty. The abstract, and possibly overly vague form of the question is, how can I use the traits-pattern to instantiate member functions? [Update: I used the wrong term here. It should be "policies" rather than "traits." Traits describe existing classes. Policies prescribe synthetic classes.] The question came up while modernizing a set of multivariate function optimizers that I wrote more than 10 years ago. The optimizers all operate by selecting a straight-line path through the parameter space away from the current best point (the "update"), then finding a better point on that line (the "line search"), then testing for the "done" condition, and if not done, iterating. There are different methods for doing the update, the line-search, and conceivably for the done test, and other things. Mix and match. Different update formulae require different state-variable data. For example, the LMQN update requires a vector, and the BFGS update requires a matrix. If evaluating gradients is cheap, the line-search should do so. If not, it should use function evaluations only. Some methods require more accurate line-searches than others. Those are just some examples. The original version instantiates several of the combinations by means of virtual functions. Some traits are selected by setting mode bits that are tested at runtime. Yuck. It would be trivial to define the traits with #define's and the member functions with #ifdef's and macros. But that's so twenty years ago. It bugs me that I cannot figure out a whiz-bang modern way. If there were only one trait that varied, I could use the curiously recurring template pattern. But I see no way to extend that to arbitrary combinations of traits. I tried doing it using boost::enable_if, etc.. The specialized state information was easy. I managed to get the functions done, but only by resorting to non-friend external functions that have the this-pointer as a parameter. I never even figured out how to make the functions friends, much less member functions. The compiler (VC++ 2008) always complained that things didn't match. I would yell, "SFINAE, you moron!" but the moron is probably me. Perhaps tag-dispatch is the key. I haven't gotten very deeply into that. Surely it's possible, right? If so, what is best practice? UPDATE: Here's another try at explaining it. I want the user to be able to fill out an order (manifest) for a custom optimizer, something like ordering off of a Chinese menu - one from column A, one from column B, etc.. Waiter, from column A (updaters), I'll have the BFGS update with Cholesky-decompositon sauce. From column B (line-searchers), I'll have the cubic interpolation line-search with an eta of 0.4 and a rho of 1e-4, please. Etc... UPDATE: Okay, okay. Here's the playing-around that I've done. I offer it reluctantly, because I suspect it's a completely wrong-headed approach.   • Override default operations order in LINQ

    For one of our applications we do use LINQ to update a few reccords of the database. For business reasons we do require that only one item of a list to be primary. When we designed we decided to fire all of queries at the database at once. The problems occurs when we add one row and update the primary element to be the second item. See, the default behavior for order of operations with LINQ is to Insert, Update, Delete. If I Insert a first element I get a check constraint error with SQL Server. The best in my opinion would be to override and make sure to Update before Insert, this way we make sure that check constraints are kept. Tho there is not a lot of documentation on the mather. Any idea ?

    I have some controls bound to a BindingSource control. I want to do a calculation when the value changes in one control and set the result on another control. Do i update the textbox the property is bound to or do i update the underlying entity which would update the control anyway(i hope)? When i change textbox A...textbox B is updated with the new calculated result..this works fine...but i have noticed that when i Leave textbox A..textbox B reverts back to its original value...what is going on here!

The problem is, when the form is submitted, it doesn't take into account the url b/c the form submits to the function "survey", which passes data to the lib function, so things are always updated, never created. *How can I pass $method to the _submit() function correctly?!*

    Hi guys, i'm trying to make a "update user's power" page. It is something similar to those you can find in say, invisionfree forums. I need it to generate a list of members with checkbox [done] Add an option for it [done] What i don't know how to do is to update, to say, give all the selected users the selected power. Then i went searching for something and found most of them uses array to do this, but i never found one that actually explains how it works.     Is it possible to use the SQL BEGIN TRANSACTION, COMMIT TRANSACTION, ROLLBACK TRANSACTION when embedding SQL Queries into an application with mutiple calls to the SQL for Table Updates. For example I have the following code: Q.SQL.ADD(<UPDATE A RECORD>); Q.ExecSQL; Q.Close; Q.SQL.Clear; Q.SQL.ADD(<Select Some Data>); Q.Open; Set Some Variables Q.Close; Q.SQL.Clear; Q.SQL.ADD(<UPDATE A RECORD>); Q.ExecSQL; What I would like to do is if the second update fails I want to roll back the first transaction. If I set a unique notation for the BEGIN, COMMIT, ROLLBACK so as to specify what is being committed or rolled back, is it feasible. i.e. before the first Update specify BEGIN TRANSACTION_A then after the last update specify COMMIT TRANSACTION_A I hope that makes sense. If I was doing this in a SQL Stored Procedure then I would be able to specify this at the start and end of the procedure, but I have had to break the code down into manageable chunks due to process blocks and deadlocks on a heavy loaded SQL Server.

  • Sharepoint SSRS: Unexpected Error Encountered

    We are running an intranet website hosted on Sharepoint 2007, serving reports to users via SSRS. Recently, our users are experiencing error when trying to access certain reports with the error message "An unexpected error has occurred". After trying many things, to cut a long story short we manage to temporarily solve the problem by manually running UPDATE STATISTICS on the tables in the database. However, this error will periodically crop up again and again, running UPDATE STATISTICS immediately solved it. I had suggested to run a daily job in the server to auto run UPDATE STATISTICS every few hours or so but was rejected by my team lead. Is there any other workaround for this error? Why does UPDATE STATISTICS solve the problem, I still not very understand?

  • PostgreSQL insert on primary key failing with contention, even at serializable level

    I'm trying to insert or update data in a PostgreSQL db. The simplest case is a key-value pairing (the actual data is more complicated, but this is the smallest clear example) When you set a value, I'd like it to insert if the key is not there, otherwise update. Sadly Postgres does not have an insert or update statement, so I have to emulate it myself. I've been working with the idea of basically SELECTing whether the key exists, and then running the appropriate INSERT or UPDATE. Now clearly this needs to be be in a transaction or all manner of bad things could happen. However, this is not working exactly how I'd like it to - I understand that there are limitations to serializable transactions, but I'm not sure how to work around this one. Here's the situation - ab: => set transaction isolation level serializable; a: => select count(1) from table where id=1; --> 0 b: => select count(1) from table where id=1; --> 0 a: => insert into table values(1); --> 1 b: => insert into table values(1); --> ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "serial_test_pkey" Now I would expect it to throw the usual "couldn't commit due to concurrent update" but I'm guessing since the inserts are different "rows" this does not happen. Is there an easy way to work around this?

    Hi all, A have an app with that uses an SQL database. The application is already released, but now I'm working on an update. In the update I've added an extra column in a table of my database.   • Sql server table can be queried but not updated

    i have a table which was always updatable before, but then suddenly i can no longer update the any of the columns in the table. i can still query the whole table and the results come back very fast, but the moment i try to update a column in the table, the update query simply stalls and does nothing. i tried using select req_transactionUOW from master..syslockinfo where req_spid = -2 to see if some orphaned transaction was locking the table, but it returns no results. i can't seems to find signs of my table being locked, but simply cannot update it. any clues as to how to fix the table or whatever state it is in?

  • SQL Server Index cost

    I have read that one of the tradeoffs for adding table indexes in SQL Server is the increased cost of insert/update/delete queries to benefit the performance of select queries. I can conceptually understand what happens in the case of an insert because SQL Server has to write entries into each index matching the new rows, but update and delete are a little more murky to me because I can't quite wrap my head around what the database engine has to do. Let's take DELETE as an example and assume I have the following schema (pardon the pseudo-SQL) TABLE Foo col1 int ,col2 int ,col3 int ,col4 int PRIMARY KEY (col1,col2) INDEX IX_1 col3 INCLUDE col4 Now, if I issue the statement DELETE FROM Foo WHERE col1=12 AND col2 > 34 I understand what the engine must do to update the table (or clustered index if you prefer). The index is set up to make it easy to find the range of rows to be removed and do so. However, at this point it also needs to update IX_1 and the query that I gave it gives no obvious efficient way for the database engine to find the rows to update. Is it forced to do a full index scan at this point? Does the engine read the rows from the clustered index first and generate a smarter internal delete against the index? It might help me to wrap my head around this if I understood better what is going on under the hood, but I guess my real question is this. I have a database that is spending a significant amount of time in delete and I'm trying to figure out what I can do about it. When I display the execution plan for the deletion, it just shows an entry for "Clustered Index Delete" on table Foo which lists in the details section the other indices that need to be updated but I don't get any indication of the relative cost of these other indices. Are they all equal in this case? Is there some way that I can estimate the impact of removing one or more of these indices without having to actually try it?

  • Zend: Fetching row from session db table after generating session id

    Hi, I'm trying to update the session table used by Zend_Session_SaveHandler_DbTable directly after authenticating the user and writing the session to the DB. But I can neither update nor fetch the newly inserted row, even though the session id I use to check (Zend_Session::getId()) is valid and the row is indeed inserted into the table. Upon fetching all session ids (on the same request) the one I newly inserted is missing from the results. It does appear in the results if I fetch it with something else. I've checked whether it is a problem with transactions and that does not seem to be the problem - there is no active transaction when I'm fetching the results. I've also tried fetching a few seconds after writing using sleep(), which doesn't help. $auth->getStorage()->write($ident); //sleep(1) $update = $this->db->update('session', array('uid' => $ident->user_id), 'id='.$this->db->quote(Zend_Session::getId())); $qload = 'SELECT id FROM session'; $load = $this->db->fetchAll($qload); echo $qload; print_r($load); $update fails. $load doesn't contain the row that was written with $auth-getStorage()-write($identity). $qload does contain the correct query - copying it to somewhere else leads to the expected result, that is the inserted row is included in the results. Database used is MySQL - InnoDB. If someone knows how to directly fix this (i.e. on the same request, not doing something like updating after redirecting to another page) without modifying Zend_Session_SaveHandler_DbTable: Thank you very much!

    Hi, I'm saving entities/records with the EF, but i'm curious if there is another way of doing it. I receive a class from a MVC controller method, so basicly i have all the info: the class's properties, including the primary key. Without EF i would do a Sql update (update table set a=b, c=d where id = 5), but with EF i got no further than this: Get an object with ID of 5 Update the (existing) object with the new object Submitchanges. What bothers me is that i have to get the object from the database first, where i have all the info to do an update statement. Is there another way of doing this?

  • How to SET ARITHABORT ON for connections in Linq To SQL

    By default, the SQL connection option ARITHABORT is OFF for OLEDB connections, which I assume Linq To SQL is using. However I need it to be ON. The reason is that my DB contains some indexed views, and any insert/update/delete operations against tables that are part of an indexed view fail if the connection does not have ARITHABORT ON. Even selects against the indexed view itself fail if the WITH(NOEXPAND) hint is used (which you have to use in SQL Standard Edition to get the performance benefit of the indexed view). Is there somewhere in the data context I can specify I want this option ON? Or somewhere in code I can do it?? I have managed a clumsy workaround, but I don't like it .... I have to create a stored procedure for every select/insert/update/delete operation, and in this proc first run SET ARITHABORT ON, then exec another proc which contains the actual select/insert/update/delete. In other words the first proc is just a wrapper for the second. It doesn't work to just put SET ARITHABORT ON above the select/insert/update/delete code.

  • How can I get my Web API app to run again after upgrading to MVC 5 and Web API 2?

    I upgraded my Web API app to the funkelnagelneu versions using this guidance: http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2 However, after going through the steps (it seems all this should be automated, anyway), I tried to run it and got, "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" What in Sam Hills Brothers Coffee is going on here? Who said this was a class library? So I opened Project Properties, and changed it (it was marked as "Class Library" for some reason - it either wasn't yesterday, or was and worked fine) to an Output Type of "Windows Application" ("Console Application" and "Class Library" being the only other options). Now it won't compile, complaining: "*Program 'c:\Platypus_Server_WebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\PlatypusServerWebAPI\obj\Debug\PlatypusServerWebAPI.exe' does not contain a static 'Main' method suitable for an entry point...*" How can I get my Web API app back up and running in view of this quandary? UPDATE Looking in packages.config, two entries seem chin-scratch-worthy: <package id="Microsoft.AspNet.Providers" version="1.2" targetFramework="net40" /> <package id="Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure" version="1.0.0.0" targetFramework="net40" /> All the others target net451. Could this be the problem? Should I remove these packages? UPDATE 2 I tried to uninstall the Microsoft.Web.Infrastructure package (its description leads me to believe I don't need it; also, it has no dependencies) via the NuGet package manager, but it tells me, "NuGet failed to install or uninstall the selected package in the following project(s). [mine]" UPDATE 3 I went through the steps in again, and found that I had missed one step. I had to change this entry in the Application web.config File : <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity name="System.Web.Mvc" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" /> <bindingRedirect oldVersion="1.0.0.0-5.0.0.0" newVersion="5.0.0.0" /> </dependentAssembly> (from "4.0.0.0" to "5.0.0.0") ...but I still get the same result - it rebuilds/compiles, but won't run, with "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly" UPDATE 4 Thinking about the err msg, that it can't directly open a class library, I thought, "Sure you can't/won't -- this is a web app, not a project. So I followed a hunch, closed the project, and reopened it as a website (instead of reopening a project). That has gotten me further, at least; now I see a YSOD: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. UPDATE 5 Note: The project is now (after being opened as a web site) named "localhost_48614" And...there is no longer a "References" folder...?!?!? As to that YSOD I'm getting, the official instructions (http://www.asp.net/mvc/tutorials/mvc-5/how-to-upgrade-an-aspnet-mvc-4-and-web-api-project-to-aspnet-mvc-5-and-web-api-2) said to do this, and I quote: "Update all elements that contain “System.Web.WebPages.Razor” from version “2.0.0.0” to version“3.0.0.0”." UPDATE 6 When I select Tools Library Package Manager Manage NuGet Packages for Solution now, I get, "Operation failed. Unable to locate the solution directory. Please ensure that the solution has been saved." So I save it, and it saves it with this funky new name (C:\Users\clay\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\localhost_48614\localhost_48614.sln) I get the Yellow Strip of Enlightenment across the top of the NuGet Package Manager telling me, "Some NuGet packages are missing from this solution. Click to restore from your online package sources." I do (click the "Restore" button, that is), and it downloads the missing packages ... I end up with the 30 packages. I try to run the app/site again, and ... the erstwhile YSOD becomes a compilation error: The pre-application start initialization method Start on type System.Web.Mvc.PreApplicationStartCode threw an exception with the following error message: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=3.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.. Argghhhh!!! (and it's not even talk-like-a-pirate day).
