• Limit disk I/O one program creates?

  Hardware: one virtualization server. Dual Nehalem, 24GB RAM, 2 TB mirrored HD. Software: Debian, KVM, virt-manager on the server with several virtual machines that use Linux too. 2 TB Disk is a big LVM, each VM gets a logical volume and makes its own partitions in that. Problem: One of the programs that runs on one of the VMs creates huge disk load. This never was an issue, because the program never ran on such a powerful hardware. Now the CPUs are fast, and lots of I/O is the result. We cant do much against that at the moment, because the tool is a black box. On the other hand, the speedy computation is welcome. The program creates about 5 GB of temp files which get overwritten during the next iteration. Question: How can we limit the disk I/O for the process?

• Troubleshooting intermittantly long 'page loading' problem

  Working off IIS 7 with an asp.net mvc app. Most page accesses are lightening quick. Sometimes the browser reports 'page loading' for an exceptionally long time. We are still in the development/testing mode so it's not a network/bandwidth issue. Happens in both IE and FF. No explicit error conditions in the server logs. If i could reproduce it i could run firebug/fiddler to give more info. As it is, it's a little too infrequent to simply leave both those running hoping for the condition to fire - unless/until that's the only option to get better info. I have a hunch this is client-side jquery/ajax related but only a hunch - don't have enough background in either jQuery or MVC to really know what can go wrong. Any initial troubleshooting suggestions welcome. thx

  I'm experimenting with PHP's session_set_save_handler and I'd like to use a PDO connection to store session data. • .NET proxy detection

  I am having an issue with .NET detecting the proxy settings configured through internet explorer. I'm writing a client application that supports proxies, and to test I set up an array of 9 squid servers to support various authentication methods for HTTP and HTTPs. I have a script that updates IE to whichever configuration I choose (which proxy, detection via "Auto", PAC, or hardcode). I have tried the 3 methods below to detect the IE configuration through .NET. On occassion I notice that .NET picks up the wrong set of proxy servers. IE has the correct settings, and if I browse the web with IE, I can see I am hitting the correct servers via wireshark. WebRequest.GetSystemWebProxy().GetProxy(destination); GlobalProxySelection.Select.GetProxy(destination); WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy Here are the following tips I have: My script sets a PAC file on a webserver, and updates the configuration in IE, then clears IE's cache .NET seems to get "stuck" on a certain proxy configuration, and I have to set another configuration for .NET to realize there was a change. Occasionally it seems to pick some random set of servers (I'm sure they're not random, just a set of servers I used once and are in some cached PAC file or something). As in, I will check the proxy for the destination "https://www.secure.com" and I may have IE configured for and thus expect to get "http://squidserver:18" and instead it will return "http://squidserver:28" (port 18 runs NTLM, 28 runs without authentication). All the squid servers work. This does not appear to be an issue on XP, only Vista, 2003, and windows 7. Hardcoding the proxy servers in IE ALWAYS works Time always solves the issue - if I leave the computer for about 20 or 30 minutes and come back, .NET picks up the correct proxy settings, as if a cached PAC script expired.

  I need to split some info from a asterisk delimitted data. Data Format: NAME*ADRESS LINE1*ADDRESS LINE2 Rules: 1. Name should be always present 2. Address Line 1 and 2 might not be 3. There should be always three asterisks. Iterate through the characters in the line 2. Store all chars in a temp variables until first * is found. Reject the data if no char is found before first occurence of asterisk. If some chars found, use it as the name. 3. Same as step 2 for finding address line 1 and 2 except that this won't reject the data if no char is found My algo looks ugly. The code looks uglier. Spliting using //* doesn't work either since name can be replaced with address line 1 if the data was *Address 1*Address2. Any suggestion?

So far I know that this is possible with the some engines, though none of them are feasible for me either because of pricing or missing features. • haml - if-else with different identations

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to render a calendar with rails and haml. The dates used come from a variable called @dates. It is a Date range that contains the first and last days to be presented on the calendar. The first day is always sunday and the last one is always monday. I'm planning to render a typical calendar, with one column per weekday (sunday is going to be the first day of the week) using an html table. So, I need to put a %tr followed by a %td on sundays, but the rest of the days I just need a %td. I'm having trouble modelling that on haml. This seems to require different levels of identation, and that's something it doesn't like.   Hello, I am writing an application to create a movie file from a bunch of images on an iPhone. I am using OpenCv. I downloaded openCv static libraries for arm(iPhones native instruction architecture) and the libraries were generated just fine. There were no problems linking to them libraries. As a first step, i was trying to create a .avi file using one image, to see if it works. But cvCreateVideoWriter always returns me a NULL value. I did some searchin and i believe its due to the codec not being present. I am trying this on the iPhone simulator. this is what i do... • Programmtically choosing image conversion format to JPEG or PNG for Silverlight display

  I have a project where I need to convert a large number of image types to be displayable in a Silverlight app - TIFF, GIF, WMF, EMF, BMP, DIB, etc. I can do these conversions on the server before hydrating the Silverlight app. However, I'm not sure when I should choose to convert to which format, either JPG or PNG. Is there some kind of standard out there like TIFF should always be a JPEG and GIF should always be a PNG. Or, if a BMP is 24 bit, it should be converted to a JPEG - any lower and it can be a PNG. Or everything is a PNG and why? What I usually see or see in response to this type of question is "Well, if the picture is a photograph, go with JPEG" or "If it has straight lines, PNG is better." Unfortunately, I won't have the luxury of viewing any of the image files at all and would like just a standard way to do this via code, even if that is a zillion if/then statements. Are there any standards or best practices around this subject? P.S. Please don't move to close this subject - it actually has no duplicate on SO because I'm not looking for subjectivity.

• balancing loudest and quietest speaker noises

  It is hard for me to find the right volume for my computer to watch my dvd's on because it seems like most reasonable volumes become overwhelming at the loudest parts of a movie and it is hard to even make out the dialog at the quietest parts. I find I'm constantly adjusting the volume during the course of a movie. Are there ways to make the difference between the louds and the quiets not so extreme? (both computer related solutions and non-computer related solutions welcome). Like moving my speakers across the room and increasing the volume? or the opposite? Or would would the extremes be less noticeable if I used headphones? Are there movie players that might have more complex sound adjustment features? If there is a software solution out there for linux that would be great too. Thanks, Dan

• Issues with FTP on my server

  I installed FTP on my windows 2003 box I created a FTP site on a ipaddress, I am not allowing anonymous access. I created a user that has access to the folder c:\ftptest connecting to my server using filezilla shows: connectiong to -0.0.0.0 connection established, waiting for welcome message could not connect to server I tried both active and passive modes. The port on the server is open i.e. TCP 21 I can connect to other FTP sites so my locla firewall isnt' the issue. (now I know why sys admin work is so fun!)

• Is it possible to do A/B testing by page rather than by individual?

  Lets say I have a simple ecommerce site that sells 100 different t-shirt designs. I want to do some a/b testing to optimise my sales. Let's say I want to test two different "buy" buttons. Normally, I would use AB testing to randomly assign each visitor to see button A or button B (and try to ensure that that the user experience is consistent by storing that assignment in session, cookies etc). Would it be possible to take a different approach and instead, randomly assign each of my 100 designs to use button A or B, and measure the conversion rate as (number of sales of design n) / (pageviews of design n) This approach would seem to have some advantages; I would not have to worry about keeping the user experience consistent - a given page (e.g. www.example.com/viewdesign?id=6) would always return the same html. If I were to test different prices, it would be far less distressing to the user to see different prices for different designs than different prices for the same design on different computers. I also wonder whether it might be better for SEO - my suspicion is that Google would "prefer" that it always sees the same html when crawling a page. Obviously this approach would only be suitable for a limited number of sites; I was just wondering if anyone has tried it?

• libav/ffmpeg: avcodec_decode_video2() returns -1 when separating demultiplexing and decoding

  I'm using libav (from a C++ program on Linux and Windows) to decode video streams from a file, which works fine (decoding various formats like H264 and MPEG2) using avformat_open_input(), av_read_frame() and avcodec_decode_video2(). Now I have to separate demultiplexing and decoding. One class will call avformat_open_input() and av_read_frame() and then pass the AVPackets into a queue that is read by another class. There I use avcodec_alloc_context3() to get the AVCodecContext needed for avcodec_decode_video2(). I've tested that with a MPEG2 video stream and it works. Problems arise if I try to decode a H264 stream: avcodec_decode_video2() always returns -1 and outputs "no frame". I understand that additional data (SPS/PPS) is needed to decode this stream, so I've tried to replicate the original AVCodecContext from the demultiplexer in the decoder, but it won't work: Copying the content of the extradata field and setting all other values that differ from the default ones in the decoder: -1 is returned Using the same context (i.e. passing along the pointer) results in a crash I also tried to set CODEC_FLAG2_CHUNKS. avcodec_decode_video2() then always returns packet.size - 3 (??) and frameFinished is never set to 1. In my opinion I have a general problem here that will arise whenever settings from the original CodecContext are needed to decode the AVPackets. I'd be grateful for any hints on how to solve that problem!

• Watch Flash video but block out part of it

  I'm learning a foreign language. There are several online sites that have Flash video in the language I'm learning (e.g., Hulu), which is great. Unfortunately, they have English subtitles, which is (depending on who you ask) somewhere between "annoying" and "actively harmful to my learning". When I'm watching them in a window, I can just move them near the bottom of the screen, or put another window over them. That's awkward, but it kind of works. But I'd like to watch them full-screen, on my TV set. Full-screen Flash doesn't let me put any window on top of it. Is there a way to watch an online Flash video but block out part of it? I'll probably be using my Mac for this, but maybe Linux -- solutions for either one welcome.

• GWT Animation final value is not respected

  I have a FlowPanel that I'm trying to animate back and forth like an iphone nav. (See this post for my original question on how to do this) So I have it "working" with the code shown below. I say working in quotes because I'm finding that my final position of my scroller is not precise and always changes when scrolling. The GWT.log always says the actual values I'm looking for, so for instance with the call below to scrollTo, my GWT.log says: ScrollStart: 0 scrollStop: -246 But when I actually analyze the element in fireBug, its css, left position is never exactly -246px. Sometimes it's off by as much as 10px so my panel has just stopped scrolling before being finished. The worst part is that this nav animates back and forth, so subsequent clicks can really throw it off, and I need pixel perfect positioning otherwise the whole things looks off. I don't even know where to start with debugging this other than what I've already done. Any tips are appreciated. • How to use a custom Windows 7 system drive letter?

  The subject PC has many hard drive partitions dedicated for different purposes, C: being a Windows XP system drive and F: (which is actually the next primary partition placed right after C: physically) being intended to host a newly installed Windows 7 instance (meant for "dual boot" configuration). Needless to say the intention was all the partitions to have exactly the same letters under both OSes, needless to say Windows 7 has detected all of them in a completely different order which would not be a problem (as the non-system drives letters can be changed easily after installation) if it wouldn't have named it's system drive C: (meant to be F:), which I have no Idea how to change. Is there a way to set the letter you want? I don't mind reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch if it is to be set at installation time or even configured in some text files on the installation DVD. I have tried this way, but it renders the Windows 7 system desktop unbootable (gets stuck on "Preparing your desktop..." after "Welcome").

• NSString writeToFile operation couldn't be completed

I want to copy it to the documents folder at installation and then, every time the app launches, get the newest version of this file from the Internet.   One thing that's always confused me is how a BackgroundWorker seems to have thread-safe access to the instance variables of the surrounding class. I have done a benchmark on /dev/sdc using Ubuntu's disk utility GUI app, and the results looked normal so I know that sdc has the capability to write faster than this. I also had the same problem on a similar WD drive that I RMAd because of bad sectors. I suppose it's possible they sent me a replacement with bad sectors too, although there are no SMART values showing them yet. Any ideas? Thanks. • microsoft mouse and keyboard center doesn't show my mouse

  as part of a recent windows update, the irritating and intrusive intellipoint microsoft mouse software now seems to have been replaced by the even more irritating and intrusive "microsoft mouse and keyboard center[sic]" I am left handed and need to switch the left and right mouse buttons round. the option to do this has disappeared from the mouse control panel, to be replaced by a link which opens up said mouse and keyboard center. this in turn is a window which allows me to change settings on the keyboard but does not have any way to control mouse settings any hints would be very welcome. this is driving me nuts.

• Typing Accent Marker in Hebrew on Mac

  I'm learning ancient Hebrew and wanted to make a document full of the vocabulary words I need to memorize so that I can study during my other classes. I noticed that OSX's built-in Hebrew fonts do not include the accent marker. An example: the word for "darkness" is ??????. To represent that the accent is on the first syllable, there needs to be a < over the first letter. The accent could be in the middle of the word, so I can't just throw < at the front every time. Does anyone have a free font that includes this? Any other elegant solutions are welcome. Edit: I found that it is unicode character 05AB. Is there a way to add that to the built-in Hebrew fonts?
