• Use ASP.NET Profile or not?

  I need to store a few attributes of an authenticated user (I am using Membership API) and I need to make a choice between using Profiles or adding a new table with UserId as the PK. It appears that using Profiles is quick and needs less work upfront. However, I see the following downsides: The profile values are squished into a single ntext column. At some point in the future, I will have SQL scripts that may update user's attributes. Querying a ntext column and trying to update a value sounds a little buggy to me. If I choose to add a new user specific property and would like to assign a default for all the existing users, would it be possible? My first impression has been that using profiles may cause maintainance headaches in the long run. Thoughts?

• How change Subversion's default binary mime-type?

  Subversion sets a binary file's svn:mime-type property to application/octet-stream by default. I need to change this default to some other mime-type. When I import for the first time this code, I would like Subversion to set mime-type to the one I choose. The reason is that my code base contains code in binary files (proprietary format), and I have the applications necessary to emulate diff and diff3 for these. But Subversion does not let me due to their default mime-type. Please note: There is no default extension (*.jar, *.py, etc) for these code files. Some files don't even have an extension. So configuring mime-type by file extension is not possible.

I'm curious if there are any good reason to choose one over the other or if it's just a matter of personal preference. • More Code Assist in Eclipse PDT For HTML

  I am trying to come over from dreamweaver to eclipse. In eclipse when I am in a php file writing html. If I just type a "<" then the code assist popup will come up with all the options I can choose from. I would like to know if the code assist can appear in more places though. If I type "<div" and hit space can I get another code assist popup? If so, how?

• What is the best possible technology for pulling huge data from 4 remote servers

  Hello, For one of our project, we need to pull huge real time stock data from 4 remote servers across two countries. The trivial process here, check the sources for a regular interval and save the update to database. But as these are real time stock data of more than 1000 companies, I have to pull every second, which isn't good in case of memory, bandwidth I think. Please give me suggestion on which technology/platform [We are flexible here. PHP, Python, Java, PERL - anyone of them will be OK for us] we should choose, it can be achieved easily and with better performance.

• apple push notification review

  Hey all, I am implementing APN's and want to release without switching it on yet.. So the app will happily receive them. but we will choose not to send them until later. My question is, as when we want to send notifications is in our control, do apple care about this when reviewing the app. I thinking not, maybe they send a test notification to the device to prove it works? but if anyone has any experience in dealing with this any info would be much appreciated. • SWT Filedialog Open into home folder

  I want to open a FileDialog window into the user home folder (i.e. /home/user or /Users/unsername) I read the user home folder, using System.getProperty: String homefolder = System.getProperty(user.home); And the variable containts the correct home folder. But when i set the filterpath in FileDialog, it opens (in linux) only the /home level not entering into the user home dir. • Reverting CoreData data

  I have an NSTableView which is populated via a CoreData-backed NSArrayController. Users are able to edit any field they choose within the NSTableView. When they select the rows that they have modified and press a button, the data is sent to a third-party webservice. Provided the webservice accepts the updated values, I want to commit those values to my persistent store. If, however, the webservice returns an error (or simply fails to return), I want the edited fields to revert to their original values. To complicate matters, I have a number of other editable controls, backed by CoreData, which do not need to resort to this behaviour. I believe the solution to this problem revolves around the creation of a secondary Managed Object context, which I would use only for values edited within that particularly NSTableView. But I'm confused as to how the two MOC would interact with each other. What's the best solution to this problem?

• Dynamic "OR" conditions in Rails 3

  I am working on a carpool application where people can search for lifts. They should be able to select the city from which they would liked to be picked up and choose a radius which will then add the cities in range to the query. However the way it is so far is that i can only chain a bunch of "AND" conditions together where it would be right to say "WHERE start_city = city_from OR start_city = a_city_in_range OR start_city = another_city_in_range" Does anyone know how to achive this?   Making UML sequence diagram in VS 2010RC I've observed that there is no activation rectangle in first object. Is this correct? Not according to my tutor and I have to quote him: "Finally, you have no activation rectangle for the userInterface instance, so the initial message could never have been sent." But I'm thinking that if guys from VS did that it must/should be correct. Another thing he is picking me at is and I'm quoting him: "In class diagram the generalisation arrow heads should be open triangles." In my opinion there isn't strictly said that they must be open triangles especially when software lets you choose their form. Looking forward to hear your opinions. Thanks for answers.

• firefox open local link to directory with explorer

  On a Website for our internal use i show links to local files and folders. the links are like this: href="file://C:/example/" href="file://C:/example/test.odt" The Problem is now that the link to the directory does open in firefox itself with a useless directory listing. Useless because you can just see the files or open them but not copy, insert, delete... The link to the file work normal and the file is opend by OpenOffice. By changing the configuration of firefox and setting the following key to false I can open the directory in with explorer.exe but for the file I have to choose the right application. network.protocol-handler.expose.file Does someone know a way to get both to work like i want? Means that the Directory is shown by explorer.exe and all files are opened by the right application. This can be by configuring Firefox or windows, changing the links, or even by writing a small program which opens all the file protocol correctly and will be used as protocol handler for the file protocol in firefox.   Hi, I know theres hundred of questions and answers out there, but cant find one to specifically answer this. I need a web editor that will let me choose a dark themed editor. I understand gvim is one, but im not totally ready to let go of my mouse. I would like something like sublime text editor for windows, but open to other suggestions. The less bloat the best. I dont need a full IDE like eclipse, but willing to compromise, as long as the themes can easily be added. I've tried bluefish, kompozer and not happy with them. Just need a basic text editor that will highlight php syntax on a dark background.

  Spent some time searching, couldn't find exactly what I'm after. We like giving hands-on programming exercises as part of the interview process. The interviewee gets a laptop, with the editor and compiler of his choice. He or she then get a programming exercise and has about an hour to code it. Depending on the nature of the question, internet access is either allowed or forbidden. I'm looking for good general questions for a junior developer. I don't care what language they choose to program in. C++ is as good as Python or Scheme, as long as (s)he can program in it (this rules out "can you write a correct copy-constructor" style questions). I just want to see how they code, if their code is self-documenting, if they write tests, check edge-cases, etc. What kind of questions would you ask?

• Can you use Github App with Beanstalk?

  Being new to Git, I wanted to use a GUI (Windows based) and preferred the Github App. However, I would like to integrate this site with a Beanstalkapp account. I'm pretty sure this is possible, but I can't figure it out. Inside of the Github app, I navigate to my repository. When I choose "Tools Settings...", I place the Git Clone URL for the repository provided by Beanstalk into the "Primary Remote (origin)" field in my Github app. Now when I click "Publish" (which says "Click to publish this branch to server" when I hover over it) it changes to "Publishing...". After a few seconds, I get this error: server failure The remote server disconnected. Try again later, or if this persists, contact [email protected] I am pretty sure I set the SSH keys up properly (never done this before). I added the key to both the Beanstalkapp and my Github web account.

We have laid down the evaluation criteria for things like HTTP version, Security, Compression etc. On the embeddable side, we have identified the following criteria: Memory footprint Memory management (support for plugging in a custom memory manager) CPU usage Thread usage (support for thread pool) Portability What I want inputs on is: Are there any other criteria that an embeddable software should meet? What exactly does it mean when someone says that a software is designed for embeddable use? We currently have zeroed in on two Web servers: AppWeb Lighttpd (lighty) Feature wise, both the above Web servers seem to be on par. However, it is claimed that AppWeb is designed for embedded use while Lighttpd is not. To choose between the above two Web servers, what criteria should I be looking at?

  Hello, I was searching for a way of detecting in my C# code if the page had been refreshed (f5). First I don’t know if a jQuery/JavaScript solution would be better than a fully C# ASP.Net. So... the first question would be: What would make you choose one over the other? And the third, and most important part, is if someone would help me with this.   Hi. In the "Regular Expression Editor" dialog in VS 2008 ( or 2005 for this matter ) , there is a list of "standard expressions" like : "French phone number" , "French postal code" etc.. And of course there is an option to select a "Custom" and then enter your own regular expression. Well.. I want to add a predefined expressions to that list . Like : "Israeli phone number" . I don't want to enter it every time by selecting a custom value . I want my developers in the team available items for them to choose. Anyone knows how to alter that list ? I've found some question about it on the web - and the answer given is that it's not possible . But that was at 2004. Anyone ?!?! Thanks.

• Connecting my flex application to Restlet webservices

  Hi, I am doing some trial testing awith Amazon ec2 boxes, deploying flex apps running on top of restlet powered webservices. I have this problem - Everytime i deploy the app to the cloud, I'm having to hardcode the IP address of the server into the ActionScript/MXML files (http://72.93.48.39:8080/xxx/abc/) and for certain reasons, i am forced to choose a different IP everytime. and i think its really not the right way to deploy the application. I would like to know what other people do in such scenarios? On thinking about it, i thought i could make it pickup values from the HTMLVars of the HTML wrapper. but that again has to be edited everytime again and again. will it be possible to be able to supply these values : server's ip address, server's port number(in case its not 8080 on some machine) at build time? if so can anyone give me a barbones sample build.xml just as an example?

As far as I understand I need to create some JS script to prepopulate it. Unfortunately I don't have this experience, and I would like to keep things simple as it possible and don't rewrite all Django admin interface. Just add this functionality for one Field. • browser back acts on nested iframe before the page itself - is there a way to avoid it??

  hi, i have a page with dynamic data loaded by some ajax and lots of javascript. the page contains a list from which the user can choose and each selected value loads new data to the page. one of these data items is a url provided to an iframe. i use jQuery BBQ: Back Button & Query Library to simulate the browser-back behavior. all works well besides the fact that when i click the back button for the first time the iframe goes back to its previous location and then i need to click back again to make the page go back. is there a way to disable the iframe's back behavior?

• Boolean Code Clarity - which style to use? [closed]

  I was wondering what style others' use when writing conditional statements that include boolean types. Currently I'm caught between using two styles. bool foo; if (foo == true) if (foo) if (foo == false) if (!foo) Obviously the first set is a bit more obvious. However, when combining conditions it could get a bit clunky. if (foo == true || blah == false || abc == true) if (foo || !blah || abc) Switching between one style for short conditionals and the other for long conditionals seems like inconsistent coding so it seems like I'd have to choose between one or the other. What do you prefer or consider better style and why?

I want to make a form - a set of questions with different answer types: some questions have a number of answers and you can check one of the answers using radiobutton, other questions you should answer using a textbox, some answers have a datetime type and you choose answer for them using a DatePicker and so on. I get all information about the questions and answer types from a WCF service. I want to make this form using making a dynamic xaml but i've naver made dynamic xaml and I don't know exactly how to make it. Query example: select * from doctor where doctor.name like '%IVANOV_A%'; But if i do it at LINQ i cannot get any result. from p in repository.Doctor.Where(x => x.Name.ToLower().Containsname)) select p; Where 'name' is variable of string parameter. Web layout request next string: "Ivanov a" or "A Ivanov" But i suggest for user choose you pattetn for query. How i can to get "patient by name" if name consist of "First name" and "Last name" but user doesn't know your doctor's full name?
