• Connect Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e120 to WQHD display (such as Dell U2711) through HDMI

  On paper, the HDMI version of the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e120 is 1.3, which supports WQHD. Does it actually work? I want to connect the e120 to a WQHD display, such as the Dell U2711 or an Apple Cinema Display. I run Windows 7 Ultimate and latest drivers. The e120 I think has the Intel HD Graphics 3000 onboard chipset. I don't have the chance to test out the e120 with neither of these displays, so I'm seeking for an opinion from those who have tried. • "Fuzzy" Display Problems on New OpenSUSE 11.3 Install

  Hi, I have a old Desktop that has a new installation of OpenSUSE 11.3 on it. To get straight to the point, whenever I try to start-up OpenSUSE, my display goes "fuzzy" (almost like a badly tuned TV) and sometimes (not always) my monitor goes black and says "Out of Range: 15.6kHz/49Hz": I assumed that this was a driver problem, so I download the drivers from nvidia and ran the shell script, completed and rebooted. Then OpenSUSE failed to boot with something like "nscd failed to start". At that point I decided to re-install and I did, but this time I tried un-checking "Automatic Configuration" to see if that helped. Got through the install and still have a problem. Unfortunately, my Linux troubleshooting skills are non-existent, so has anyone got any ideas on what could be the problem (is it the display driver?) and how I can fix the problem?

  I frequently VNC into a server where we run many concurrent computationally intensive matlab processes. Sometimes, one of my processes misbehave, which I can see from top, but I have a hard time figuring out which VNC session it's running on, or more specifically, which display it's running on. Suppose I see that PID 8536 looks like a resource hog, and I want to investigate. Because it's a matlab session, I know there is likely an IDE open somewhere, and I want to check to see if anything important is happening before I kill it. We've solved this somewhat awkwardly in the past by identifying which PTY 8536 was launched from, then looking at a process tree to figure out things launched in that context, scrolling up, and seeing the VNC initialization. Seems like there must be a better way to go PID - X Display (or VNC Session).

• HP Pavilion dv3 volume control display driver on Windows 7

  I've recently bought an HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep and I'm having a hard time getting the volume control display to work as expected. The control is a back-lit touch-sensitive bar above the keyboard. Now the buttons to turn the volume up and down actually do it, but the lightning is not changing at all. The mute button does change color when toggled. I'm not sure if I'm missing any drivers here (I've installed all of those on the HP support page that seem to have something to do with sound and/or display) or if I have to activate this somewhere. Any ideas?

  I have a computer at home that I log into remotely. The "monitor" for it is a TV, so I want gtk applications to use a large font and icon theme, which I managed to do by editing the ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file and some other similar stuff. What I want to be able to do is have a separate theme for when I'm logging in remotely. The best way to explain is that I would like my gtk theme choice to be dependent on the X display that the application is started on. For example, if I start something on :0.0 then that is the TV and I want large fonts, but if I start it on localhost:10.0 I want to use a regular size font, because it will get rendered on my laptop screen. The elegant solution would be to have some sort of IF statement in the .gtkrc-2.0 file that checks the $DISPLAY variable and behaves accordingly. The problem is I can't find any documentation on control structures in .gktrc files, or if it's even possible to do that.

  I am trying to parse the contents of http://feeds.feedburner.com/riabiz using XDocument.Parse(string) (because it gets cached in a DB.) However, it keeps failing with the below stack trace when it tries to resolve some URIs in that XML. I don't care about validation or any of that XML nonsense, I just want the structure parsed. • Stretch VMWare Player guest OS to fullscreen

  I’m using VMWare Player to play an old 16-bit Windows game. Unfortunately the game uses only 640x480 and I cannot figure out how to stretch the VM window to full-screen on the host. I set the guest OS to 640x480, but the screen is still small, in the middle of the screen as seen in figure 1. I even tried setting the compatibility mode to Windows 95 and 640x480, but it has no effect (figure 2) and looks exactly the same as when I set the VM to full-screen (1366x768 on the laptop) and start the game normally. There are few references to stretching a VM. One page mentions setting a Stretch Guest option, but there is no such option, at least not in VMWare Player 4.0.3. • Iverter, inverter cable, or a display cable?

  I was recently hired at a small repair shop. I work indoors while my boss does on site calls for small businesses. I have to troubleshoot and fix laptop screens a few times a week and this is why I'm posting this question. I'm having trouble figuring out how to stream line the troubleshooting process. For example, how do I determine whether the inverter is broken while also determining that the inverter cable is not. How can I quickly decide that the inverter cable is broken while knowing that the inverter is most likely not broke. Or how do I know that it's just the display cable? It seems like this is a good way to approach things: "It could be the inverter, backlight, or the LCD panel itself. Backlight failure is usually hinted at by a pink hue to everything. Inverter failure usually results in the dimming of images on the screen to the point where the backlight is not even on (the inverter provides power to the backlight)" Source. While remembering that things "like flickering, screen freeze in dark image and [a] corner starts to get brighter" point to a "failure in the LCD panel itself, though it could just as easily be a loose data cable connected to the back of the LCD." Source. In short, I'm soliciting advice that anyone might have on how to quickly make the best decision about what's causing problems with laptops display. Thank you.

  I'm running 64-bit windows 7 on a dell inspiron 1525 with an Intel 965 graphics chipset. When I bring up the "screen resolution" settings, I can set up my primary and secondary display (the laptop + an LCD monitor) but there is no option for rotation. I'm used to using this feature at work so I was surprised to see it missing. I installed dell's latest drivers for this chipset (although they were not marked as w7 or 64 bit) and no change. Any idea what's going on here? Thanks superusers!

  I have a Dell E510 desktop with a geForce 7200 instead of the ATI x600 it came with. I have attempted to install CentOS 5.4 x86_64 (DVD), CentOS 5.5 (net install), and CentOS 5.5 x86_64 (DVD). Gnome desktop. All of these run into the same issue. When I put the DVD into the machine and reboot, the installer begins and I select "graphical install". I see text that say anaconda is starting, and then my screen goes nuts. It's not black, but rather a screen full of diagonal stripes or multiple colors. So I attempted to do a text install of CentOS 5.5 (DVD) and got it installed. When I booted for the first time, I logged into the virtual console and started X (startx). The desktop came up and it already had the display properties GUI up. I changed it from 800x600 to 1680x1050, saw that there were updates available, installed them, and then rebooted. When I start X from the virtual console this time, I get exactly the same display problem as I described before. Does anyone know what might be causing this and what I can do about it? edit: I should also mention that I'm capable of installing Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 onto this machine with absolutely no issues at all.

  I have an iMac and an LG Flatron connected as a secondary monitor. The recommended resolution for the flatron is 1680x1050 @ 65.290 Hz (horiz), 59.954 Hz (vert). For some reason, OSX is choosing a slightly different set of scan rates and this is currently my best guess of why the monitor goes into power saving mode when connected to the iMac (but works fine on a PC). Now, I resolved this by installing switchResX and fudging the scan rates according to the specs in the manual. But how does one change these rates w/o 3rd party tools? Which config files need editing? Thanks

  Hi everyone, i hope someone can help me with this problem. I have a Dell vostro 1310 Laptop with 32 bit vista and a 8400M nVidia chip. Recently i have noticed performance issues when my girlfriend was playing Sims 3, and then one day i turned it on and all i got was a thick white line at the bottom of the screen. i heard the OS start up so automatically i thought it was a damaged screen, but i had doubts so i plugged it into an external display via the vga port. it worked but everything appart worm the OS choice menu looks distorted beyond belief. even the bios screen had multicoloured lines running down the screen. The resolution is non existant, the screen only shows a 256 colour pallette and is heavily distorted. i barely managed to get to the device manager where i found the gfx card with an exclamation mark. does anybody have suggestions? should i buy a new mobo or are repairs possible? thanks in advance

  My laptop screen goes black after about a minute of inactivity. I've already tried setting the Screen Saver to anything other than Blank and increasing the Wait but it still keeps happening. Also checked my Power Options, the plan I currently have is set to turn the screen off only after an hour. If I move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard the screen wakes up. Any other ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

  Does Windows 7 have an option to enlarge everything on the screen, e.g. via a spi setting? How well does this work? i.e. do the objects look clear when enlarged? I ask this because sometimes software that enlarges non-photographic bitmap images e.g. icons and symbols can leave them artifacted with harsh jaggier slopes and blurred lines. I've tried the dpi setting in Windows XP but it doesn't enlarge everything, and some things are not so clear as described above. I'm looking at a notebook/laptop with this spec. • How to run Fujitsu P27T-7 LED monitor in its not native resolution and have perfect fonts rendering

  My problem is completely opposite to anything I could find as I need to run my monitor in its NOT native resolution and have perfect font rendering. I recently got myself Ultra HD 2560x1440 27 inch monitor (Fujitsu P27T-7 LED) and I have an issue with this. I would call it personal but I'm afraid it's not as few people already agreed with me. I do programming and the text on UHD is way to small for comfortable usage. I changed the resolution to regular Full HD (1920x1080), it became just right but the text is looking slightly blur now, in comparison to both its natural UHD resolution and/or to my old 23 inch NEC. I am pretty frustrated and not sure what to do and how to make fonts look just as sleek as they should? I can't work in UHD resolution (my vision is 100% perfect), simply if calculated, picture size with Ultra HD (2560x1440) on 27 inch is around 30% smaller than Full HD (1920x1080) on 23 inch. In order to have same font size, if compared with Full HD 23 inch, 27 inch Ultra HD monitor must be around 32 inches in size. If I set my new monitor to regular Full HD 1920x1080, then the fonts' size are just perfect but the quality is not as it's blurry? Could anyone please help me out with an advise of how to solve this problem? Spec: nVidia 560 Ti with DVI-D port on Fedora 20. EDIT 1: Changing fonts doesn't really help as everything else doesn't look the way it should. EDIT 2: The monitor is buzzing on 2560x1440 so badly in case there are lots of lines on the screen, like file listing. If I type ls /usr/bin it makes such nasty irritating sound. When resolution goes to 1920x1080 it's a bit better. Any idea why?

• Brightness too dark or too bright

  Basically, below a seemingly-arbitrary threshold (seems to be around 60%) my laptop screen is too dark to really make out much, and above that threshold it takes its maximum brightness (which is waay too bright for my eyes). This problem only occurs when I change the brightness using Windows' UI. Changing the brightness using Fn keys on my keyboard works as expected; unless the screen went into dark mode because of Windows, in which case they have no effect. This problem started occuring on my ASUS laptop very recently. My laptop has a poor battery, but I don't think that's related. What is going on? I tried resetting power plan settings, turning off adaptive brightness and restarting. I'll give any info asked for. Help required urgently...

  I have an Asus EEEBox (EB202, intel GMA 950) hooked up to my 1080p TV (DVI-HDMI cable). I use it to watch standard definition movies and TV shows. I prefer to run at 1280x720 so that I can see things more easily, but every time I turn off the TV, then back on again, the resolution defaults to 1080p (1920x1080). How can I force a specific resolution? If that's not possible, is there a way to use a batch script to switch to the desired resolution faster?

We want to allow any computer in our office (mac, linux, windows) to output its video on the large display. Since some of the computers in the office are stationary, and it's not practical to run video cables everywhere, it would be preferable to make this all happen through the network.   which graphics driver will solve my laptop screen display problem? Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS on my laptop and upgraded it to 12.10, through 12.04.1 LTS. I am not able to get the display right, from the beginning. During boot laptop screen is all green, and images / videos are not getting displayed properly when logged in. Actual problem started last week, when this laptop was with Windows Vista (preloaded), and I tried to update Nvidia graphics drivers. something went wrong and I couldn't find a way to fix, so decided to install Ubuntu. Over last week, installed / re-installed Ubuntu many times with various drivers with no success. Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1420 Installed OS : ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Current, Ubuntu 12.10) Nvidia driver : GeForce 8400M GS (tried in previous installations; not installed now) Print-screen was not able to catch this issue as mentioned in the comment, so I am posting screen photos.
