  • Server 13.10 Install Hangs

    I'm trying to install Server 13.10 on some old hardware for testing (HP/Compaq dc5850, with Athlon X2 2.3 GHz dual core, 4GB RAM). The third screen is "Select Language" and the machine appears to hang. Ath e selection screen, the keyboard and mouse does not work. I integrity checked the CD and it checked out OK. I also performed a second ISO download and it cross checked with my initial download: $ md5 Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso MD5 (Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e MD5 (Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e I was able to install Server 12.04 on the same machine. The problem with 12.04 is the OpenStack packages are too old, and I wanted to try something with fresher packages. My problem appears similar to I cannot install Ubuntu Server 12.10. The Installer hangs at the language selection, but my ISOs appear to be good and the disc appears to be good. Any ideas?

  • Windows Phone 7, taking the mobile out of mobile

    I’ll start off this blog entry with a little background which is necessary for you to understand my situation. I moved from to the UK to Germany about three years ago and while I can converse in German, English is still very much my first language and the language I want my content delivered in. I happily purchased a HTC HD7 when WP7 was released here in Germany thinking foolishly that Microsoft really would get internationalization and localization as it’s at the heart of their business and developer products. Overall I’m very happy with my WP7, the camera sucks but that’s more HTC’s fault that Microsoft, but other than that it’s a very promising platform. My problems started when I purchased my first app. Initially everything appeared to be fine and things were as smooth as things had been with my previous free applications, however about a month after I received an email from Zune informing me that the credit card that they had registered against my account had expired. No problem I foolishly thought; I’ll simply add a new one. I don’t want to bore you with the details of what I’ve been through other than to take the low-lights: trying numerous websites, posts on Microsoft Answers and a tweet to Microsoft Support all to no avail. Today somebody suggested that I call the Xbox support line in the UK as they had solved their billing problems this way. So I called up the Xbox support line since I hadn’t resolved the problem using the Zune portal to resolve my problem with my WP7 (anybody else thinks Microsoft might need some consolidation here). After being on the phone with a very friendly representative in Ireland I was informed that because my British credit card has a billing address in Germany they are unable to accept it as a credit card. Because my Live ID and Zune Tag are registered in the UK they cannot take my card. Their solution is that I have to create a new Zune Tag that has its locale in Germany and then associate it with my phone. Now, first thing I go to register for a Zune Tag with a German locale it very kindly switches into German for me, nothing quite like reading a EULA in a language you’re not fluent in. I’ve no idea how this will affect the apps that are available to me in the app store, and I’m pretty sure it means that all my Xbox live achievements will become history. And what if I was to move to say France at some point do I have to go through all this again? At the end of the day I’m trying to set something up so I can give them my money and they’re making it VERY difficult for me. Could you imagine walking into a book store when you were on holiday and being told by the clerk that they couldn’t take your credit card because you came from another country?

  • STL for games, yea or nay?

    Every programming language has its standard library of containers, algorithms, and other helpful stuff. With languages like C#, Java, and Python, it's practically inconceivable to use the language without its standard lib. Yet, on many C++ games I've worked on, we either didn't use the STL at all, used a tiny fraction of it, or used our own implementation. It's hard to tell if that was a sound decision for our games, or one simply made out of ignorance of the STL. So... is the STL a good fit or not?

    At this time, lets say in the modern era, in which order do you organize a programing course for teaching and/or learning, what should be learned first, what should emphasize: Databases Data structures Design patterns Programing paradigms(Procedural, functional, OOP, ...etc ) Operating System Some specific programing language What about English if you are not native speaker or doesn't know English AI Anything else... I ask this because in the university that I went, the programing course was awful it was not focus on what you were going to see out when you work what you were supposed to learn.     My site's pages are in multiple languages whereby each language version shares its media (images) with the other language versions. I place all versions and the media in a single directory with the same name. E.g. pages mypage-en.html, mypage-fr.html etc. will sit in directory mypage. The directory path suffices to reference a page: h t t p : //....../mypage/ is good enough, there is no need for h t t p : //....../mypage/mypage-en/html A rewrite with RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html lets me use the shorter form. But what if the name mypage contains spaces (which some do) ? I want h t t p : //....../my page/ to lead to h t t p : //....../my page/my page.html Using RewriteRule ^(.*)/([a-zA-Z0-9|\s]+)/?$ /$1/$2/$2-en.html did not work. Any hints welcome. (please do not ask me why I want to do this, nor tell me I should not use spaces in file names)

  • Which one to select for my future career; Java, C#, Azure or Apex?

    Hi folks, This time, I am going to studying Masters in Computer Science in U.S.A after a week. I have been doing my B.Sc for the past three years and after my freshman year I started working on projects (in C# and very rarely in Java) for the past two years.(i.e while I was a second and third year student). Now I am in a college where all of the programming courses are going to be taken in Java only (using Eclipse) and I am going to stay in this college for 8 months on campus and then fully employed for two years in other companies as a CPT. I really love to work on Microsoft products because, for me, they are simple and easy to use and understand. My future plan is to work in Cloud computing and be a Cloud based business owner in the near future. Since the college is going to teach us and let us do every project in Java, I was confused which programming language to use that will help me and enhance me in my career, and of course I wanted to select the one I liked to do everytime. I also heard a lot about Azure (Microsoft’s ) and Apex (Salesforce.com’s cloud computing programming language). Would you please give me your advice and recommendation based on my situation? Should I have to study only Java, or should I have to study C# or Azure beside Java on my own? The reason I asked this is because, since I have no clue how Azure works and how long it will take me to know the language, I am really confused which one to select (Java Vs C# and Azure Vs Apex or if there is any popular and mostly used Cloud Computing langauge). Do you think I can get a job in cloud computing if I study Azure or Apex by my own without experience? There is also one issue I want to consider which is a short term issue is. i.e Salary. Since I have to pay my student loan, I also need to get a good job which will let me pay my loan within two years. But, as I said, my long term plan is, get experience in Cloud Computing (from programming to administrative part,i.e every area of cloud computing) and then have my own business may be within 5-10 years.   • Has Dart something useful that javascript doesn't have?

    http://www.dartlang.org/ I've checked out the site very briefly, and got curious. Is there any advantages of using Dart? Is it just a replacement for javascript? It looks like simpler java. Writing quite a lot of C# at work, the language feels very much like what I'm used to, so learning the syntax looks like a breeze to learn. Has anybody any opinions or experiences with the language? (Compared to coffeescript (= I'm not doing ruby syntax) the syntax looks more familiar to me).

  • Does Turing-complete implies possibility of malware? [closed]

    Is it possible to build an operating system that contains some Turing complete compiler (language?) but is unable to run any malware? Or is there any definition for a malware? This question popped on my mind as I was wondering why Windows has more malware than Linux. If Linux contains a C programming language and its compiler, I think it is possible to write a Linux program that works similarly than Windows viruses. But there are less malware for Linux than for Windows although there is a Wine for Linux to simulate Windows programs.

  • Is it possible to grant access to a folder in a SVN server using SVN's API?

    I need to develop a web application (Using any language but I'm familiar with Frameworks Symfony2 and Rails), that is able to grant access to a user to a determined folder on another server on the same network from the application's front-end. I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

  • Are there some types of software that cannot be developed by all major programming languages?

    I'd like to know if some of the major programming languages can absolutely not be used to create some very specific types of software. By major programming language I mean the likes of C++, C#, Java, Ruby, Python. By "cannot be developed" I mean cannot be developed or it is unrealistic to do it due to performance, difficulty of implementation, etc. I've always thought that any programming language could be used to solve any problem but lately I've been thinking that some languages are unsuitable for some projects. If you can provide examples of such applications, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Would you see any use of a Trilean (True, False, ??)

    I don't know if I'm alone but sometimes I have a function that should return true or false. But in some case there would be a third result that would make more sense. In some language theses cases would be handled with integers or with exception. For exemple you want to handle the age of a user if he is over 18 years old. And you have a function like this. if(user.isAdult(country_code)){ //Go On }else{ // Block access or do nothing } But in some case depending how your app is built I could see case where the birthday field is incomplete. Then this function should return something undetermined. switch(user.isAdult()){ case true: // go on break; case undetermined: //Inform user birthday is incomplete case false: //Block access } As i said we can handle that with Exceptions and Int, but I would find it quite sexy to have a true, false, undetermined embeded in the language instead of using some home defined constants.

  • What is the use of the workspaces?

    I was wondering what use are the workspaces at all, if any. I notice that when I switch to another workspace, all the apps still show in the unity bar and all the icons are still present in the taskbar, and clicking on them takes me to the workspace with those windows. So really, why would I ever care to switch it, and for what purpose? It would have made sense if switching windows completely gave be an empty unity bar where I can start multiple, independent instances of various applications.

From looking at popular open-source frameworks for both front-end and back-end, I have a general idea of what the modern full-stack web setup looks like: Database <- Back-end language ~ REST API <- Front-end Notes: The back-end language (Python, Ruby, PHP, Java) generates the API, which is the only layer between the back and the front. The API will have authentication to protect private data. The front-end sends GET and POST requests to the API. A MVC framework can be used, such as Backbone, Angular, or Ember.js. Does this align with best practices for web development?

  • Game programming and quantity of timers

    I've made a simple 2D game engine using C# and DirectX and it's fully functional for the demo I made to test it. I have a Timer object that uses QueryPerformanceCounter and I don't know what's the better choice: use only one timer in the game loop to update everything in the game, or an independent timer in every object that needs one. My worry is that when I try to implement threads, what will happen with timers? What happens with the sync?

    As C# has progressed, many language features have been added. It has come to the point where it's becoming unreadable for me. As an example, consider the following code snip from Caliburn.Micro code here: container = CompositionHost.Initialize( new AggregateCatalog( AssemblySource.Instance. Select(x => new AssemblyCatalog(x)) .OfType<ComposablePartCatalog>() ) ); Now, this is just a small example. I have a number of questions: Is this a common or known problem? Is the C# community finding the same? Is this an issue with the language, or is it the style used by the developer? Are there any simple solutions to better understand others code and avoid writing code in this way?

  • How easy is it to change languages/frameworks professionally? [closed]

    Forgive me for asking a career related question - I know that they can be frowned upon here, but I think that this one is general enough to be useful to many people. My question is: How easy/difficult is it to get a job using language/frameowork B, when your current job uses language/framework A? e.g. If you use C#/ASP.NET in your current job, how difficult would it be to get a job using python/django, or PHP/Zend, or whatever (the specifics of the example don't matter). Relatedly, if you work in client side scripting, but perhaps work on server-side projects in your own time, how difficult would it be to switch to server-side professionally? So, to sum up, does the choice of which languages/frameworks use at work tend to box you in professionally?

  • What are the Open Source alternatives to WPF/XAML?

    If we've learned anything from HTML/CSS it's that, declarative languages (like XML) work best to describe User Interfaces because: It's easy to build code preprocessors that can template the code effectively. The code is in a well defined well structured (ideally) format so it's easy to parse. The technology to effectively parse or crawl an XML based source file already exists. The UIs scripted code becomes much simpler and easier to understand. It simple enough that designers are able to design the interface themselves. Programmers suck at creating UIs so it should be made easy enough for designers. I recently took a look at the meat of a WPF application (ie. the XAML) and it looks surprisingly familiar to the declarative language style used in HTML. It's apparent to me that the current state of desktop UI development is largely fractionalized, otherwise there wouldn't be so much duplicated effort in the domain of graphical user interface design (IE. GTK, XUL, Qt, Winforms, WPF, etc). There are 45 GUI platforms for Python alone It's seems reasonable to me that there should be a general purpose, open source, standardized, platform independent, markup language for designing desktop GUIs. Much like what the W3C made HTML/CSS into. WPF, or more specifically XAML seems like a pretty likely step in the right direction. Now that the 'browser wars' are over should we look forward to a future of 'desktop gui wars?' Note: This topic is relatively subjective in the attempt to be 'future-thinking.' I think that desktop GUI development in its current state sucks ((really)hard) and, even though WPF is still in it's infancy, it presents a likely solution to the problem. Update: Thanks a lot for the info, keep it comin'. Here's are the options I've gathered from the comments and answers.
