• How do you diagnose a 500 error on Heroku when there is no error message in the logs?

  I have a Rails app on Heroku that is serving 500 errors at random intervals. Web pages will display "Internal server error" in plain text, instead of the usual "We're sorry. Something went wrong." page. When I refresh the page, it works fine. • Is there an MVVM-friendly way to swap views without value converters firing unnecessarily?

  I thought what I was doing was right out of the Josh Smith MVVM handbook, but I seem to be having a lot of problems with value converters firing when no data in the view-model has changed. So, I have a ContentControl defined in XAML like this: <ContentControl Grid.Row="0" Content="{Binding CurrentViewModel}" /> The Window containing this ContentControl references a resource dictionary that looks something like this: <ResourceDictionary ...> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:SetupPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:SetupPanel /> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:InstructionsPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:InstructionsPanel /> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> So, basically, the two data templates specify which view to show with which view-model. This switches the views as expected whenever the CurrentViewModel property on my window's view-model changes, but it also seems to cause value converters on the views to fire even when no data has changed. It's a particular problem with IMultiValueConverter classes, because the values in the value array get set to DependencyProperty.UnsetValue, which causes exceptions unless I specifically check for that. But I'm getting other weird side effects too. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just do everything manually, like this: Instantiate each view. Set the DataContext of each view to the appropriate view-model. Give the ContentControl a name and make it public. Handle the PropertyChanged event for the window. In the event handler, manually set the Content property of the ContentControl to the appropriate view, based the CurrentViewModel (using if statements). This seems to work, but it also seems very inelegant. I'm hoping there's a better way. Could you please advise me the best way to handle view switching so that value converters don't fire unnecessarily?

  Hi, i want do the following: In Word 2007 place the Cursor on a field (or mark that field) and call a macro wich edit the field function of that field. (add some string). I´m even grateful for some tipps what term to google. I used the macro recorder and got following: WordBasic.FormatField Field:="CITATION Gro05 \p 9 \l 1031" Thats obvious creats a new field but where to go from here? • Getting an unexpected "?" at the end of a Registry GetValue in C#

  Hi, I use the Registry class to manage values in the Registry on Windows Seven in C#. Registry.GetValue(...); But, I'm facing a curious behavior : Every time, the returned value is the correct one, but sometimes, it is followed by an unexpected "?" When I check the Registry, (regedit), the "?" doesn't exist. I really don't understand from where this question mark come from. Could someone help me please ? • Want to bind an input field to a jquery-ui slider handle

  hello, I want to bind an input field to the jquery-ui slider handle. So whenever one value changes I want the other value to also change. Ex: if someone types 1000 into the minimum value input field I want the lower slider handle to move to the 1000 mark. Also if the user drags the lower slider handle to 1000 the input field should reflect that.   Hi, I have a table with 58 records in mysql database. I was able to connect to my database and retrive all records and made 5 pages with links to view each pages using php script. webpage will look like this: name number john 1232343456 tony 9878768544 jack 3454562345 joe 1232343456 jane 2343454567 andy 2344560987 marcy 9873459876 sean 8374623534 mark 9898787675 nancy 8374650493 1 2 3 4 5 that's the first page of 58 records and those 5 numbers at bottom are links to each page that will display next 10 records. I got all that. but what I want to do is display the links in this way: 1-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 51-58 note: since i have 58 records, last link will display upto 58, instead of 60. Since I used the loop to create this link, depending on how many records i have, the link will change according to the number of records in my table. How can i do this? Thanks.

• Horizontally align rows in multiple tables using web user control

  I need to align rows in different tables that are layed out horizontally. I'd prefer to put the html code in a single web user control so I can create as many instances of that control as I want and lay them out horizontally. The problem is, the text in the rows needs to wrap. So some rows may expand vertically and some may not (see the example below). When that happens, the rows in the other tables aren't aligned horizontally. I know I can accomplish all this by using a single table, but that would mean I'd have to duplicate the name, address and phone html code instead of dynamically creating new instances of my user control (in reality there are many more fields than this, but I'm keeping it simple). Is there any way to do this whether with div's, tables or something else? Here's the problem: Mary Jane's address field expands 2 lines, causing her phone field to not align properly with John's and Bob's. Name: John Doe Name: Mary Jane Name: Bob Smith Address: 123 broadway Address: Some really long address Address: Short address Phone: 123-456 that takes up multiple lines Phone: 111-2222 Phone: 456-789 I'm not restricted in any way how to do this (other than using asp.net), but I'd prefer to use a single web control that I instantiate X times at design time (in this example, it's 3 times). • Alternate widgets and logic for ManyToManyField with Django forms

  In my Django project, I have a simple ticket system. When creating a ticket, certain users have the ability to assign the ticket to other users, and to email the ticket to other users as well (this is used as an FYI for those users, so they're aware of the ticket, even though it's not assigned to them.) At the moment, the form for adding a ticket is simply the default Django form, with the "assigned_to" and "email_to" fields being ManyToManyFields, and therefore displayed as MultipleSelect widgets, each with a list of all users. Due to the relatively large number of users, and general awkwardness of the MultipleSelect widget, and alternate layout is now required. The desired layout is a pair of simple Select widgets side-by-side. The first has the option of "Assign to" or "Email to" and the second is a list of the users. Essentially, like this: [Assign to] [John Doe] [Email to] [Jane Roe] [Jack Smith], etc. Of course, since an arbitrary number of users can be assigned or emailed a ticket, there's a simple button that runs some Javascript to add another set of widgets, to allow the user to assign and email as many people as they need to. So far all of that is fairly simple and straight forward. However, the problem I have is using this widget setup/logic setup with Django forms. Instead of lists of users to assign to and email, instead we're getting back pairs of information, one a user and the other which list that user should be placed in. What I'm looking for, but have yet to find, is a way to offload the translation between how the user uses the form, and how Django understands the model to the form itself, so I don't have to manually do the processing of the data before passing it to the form in each place this form is used. Additionally, there's a review screen with the option to go back and change the form before submitting it, so a way to have the form translate both to and from this format would be extremely helpful.

  We're working on a new ASP.Net site. The last major site we did was in classic ASP--the procedure we used there was to have the HTML completed first, then "bring it to life" with the ASP code. In the ASP.Net world, how does this work? I.e. how do the designers do their work if much of the mark-up is actually being generated by the server controls? We are also looking at ASP.Net MVC as a potential lightweight alternative. Would be very interested to know what was worked best for people in both scenarios in terms of working with the designers and integrating their work with the code.

  I have a string in Python 2.7.2 say u"\u0638". When I write it to file: f = open("J:\\111.txt", "w+") f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.close() In hex it looks like: FF FE 38 06 When i print such a string to stdout i will see: '\xff\xfe8\x06'. The querstion: Where is \x38 in the string output to stdout? In other words why the string output to stdout is not '\xff\xfe\x38\x06'? If I write the string to file twice: f = open("J:\\111.txt", "w+") f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.write(u"\u0638".encode('utf-16')) f.close() The hex representation in file contains byte order mark (BOM) \xff\xfe twice: FF FE 38 06 FF FE 38 06 I wonder what is the techique to avoid writting BOM in UTF-16 encoded strings?

  I'm currently reading chapter 5.8 of Dive Into Python and Mark Pilgrim says: There are no constants in Python. Everything can be changed if you try hard enough. This fits with one of the core principles of Python: bad behavior should be discouraged but not banned. If you really want to change the value of None, you can do it, but don't come running to me when your code is impossible to debug. I tried this in the interpreter None = "bad" I get a SyntaxError: assignment to None Just out of curiosity how do you change None?

  I know REST is meant to be resource-oriented, which roughly translates to CRUD operations on these resources using standard HTTP methods. But what I just wanted to update a part of a resource? For example, let's say I have Payment resource and I wanted to mark its status as "paid". I don't want to POST the whole Payment object through HTTP (sometimes I don't even have all the data). What would be the RESTful way of doing this?   is it possible to rebase a branch with all it's subbranches in git? i often use branches as quick/mutable tags to mark certain commits. * master * * featureA-finished * * origin/master now i want to rebase -i master onto origin/master, to change/reword the commit featureA-finished^ after git rebase -i --onto origin/master origin/master master, i basically want the history to be: * master * * featureA-finished * (changed/reworded) * origin/master but what i get is: * master * * (same changeset as featureA-finished) * (changed/reworded) | * featureA-finished |.* (original commit i wanted to edit) * origin/master is there a way around it, or am i stuck with recreating the branches on the new rebased commits?

  Hi, In F# I have a function that returns System.Linq.Expression instances: and System.Object with member this.ToExpression() = match this with | :? System.Int32 -> Expression.Constant(this) :> Expression | :? System.Boolean -> Expression.Constant(this) :> Expression | :? Tml.Runtime.Seq as s -> s.ToExpression() | _ -> failwith "bad expression" If I omit the type coercions on the return values F# will infer the return type of the function to ConstantExpression. My first thought was to explicitly mark the return type as being : #Expression, but that didn't work. Is there a more elegant way of doing this that doesn't involve manually casting return types to the most generic type? Thanks.

• Mac dashboard widgets not loading external images

  I set out to make a quick Mac OS X dashboard widget. I read the documentation and was pleased to find out they use simple HTML, JS, and CSS. I created my widget and it works when I open the .html file in Firefox, but it does not work when I install the widget to the dashboard. The widget is simple: it displays the most recent image from a weather web cam stream. The image URLs look like this: http://webcam.com/stream.jpg?1274213999617. The timestamp is appended to the URL and the server automatically responds with the latest image for that time. I did not write the server script. The widget appears to be loading correctly, but the web cam image will not load. Notice the blue question mark in the upper left. The image should appear over the square background image. Is there any special procedure for loading external images into a widget?
