• Should you apply a language filter to a randomly generated string?

  A while back I created a licensing system for my companies new product, as well as all products after this one. As with a lot of licensing systems mine generates codes: 25 character product and registration codes, as well as 16 character module unlocking codes. My question is, since some parts of these generated codes are random should I apply a language filter to it to avoid any embarrassing language being given to the end users? I chose to as it was not difficult at all. But has anyone else ever came across something like this? Any viewpoints as to if it is worth the effort?

  Let's say on an e-commerce site that sells unique pens, on a particular pen's product page, the image of the pen has an alt attribute value of "unique red-striped pen"... and another product has "unique blue-spotted pen", etc... The keywords across all products being "unique" and "pen", which would also be helpful when it comes to SEO. However, if the person just goes to the general "unique pens" category page and sees a list of thumbnail images, each with the words "unique" and "pen" in the alt attribute, would that potentially have a negative impact with regards to SEO by having the same keywords too many times?

  Is there a way I can see the result of my work while I am translating? It is difficult to translate without context. If I could see how my work will appear while I am doing it, translating is much easier. Edit from Oli: I understand this question to be from somebody who is translating an application. Translators often only have a list of phrases to translate without being able to see where those phrases are used in the app. This person wants a way to quickly locate a string inside an application so they can understand the phrase better and provide the best possible translation.

  I have recently upgraded to Precise and had some errors. It seems to be quite random and with differences in the error reports. I have duly sent the reports hoping the system will have found the problem and sorted itself out. After the second error I am following the wizards (software...) advice and seeking help. The 1st time it happened I jotted down the following: ExecutablePath /usr/lib/tracker/tracker-extract LaunchPad bug 950765 AMD64 The second time the following: ExecutablePath /usr/share/appart/appart-gpu-error-intel.py "Possible GPU hang........" sandybridge-m-gt2 LaunchPad bug 981261 If there is anyone that can help it is much appreciated. I did not really want to upgrade at this stage, but was forced to due to the latest version of python-numpy in precise. You win some, you loose some.... • Having a list of rooms with theirs connection to each other, how do I find isolated room groups?

  I'm trying to create a small roguelike and went as far as random generating rooms and corridors. Each room is an instanced object and contain an arraylist of the others rooms connected by a corridor. I can single out unconnected rooms but how can I know the rooms that are connected only to each other but not to most of the others, forming an island? to illustrated better the problem here is an image from the console on a bogged level. Rooms 5 and 6 are connected only to each other. What algorithm can I use to detect that?

• Even distribution through a chain of resources

  I'm working on an algorithm which routes tasks through a chain of distributed resources based on a hash (or random number). For example, say you have 10 gateways into a service which distribute tasks to 1000 handlers through 100 queues. 10,000 connected clients are expected to be connected to gateways at any given time (numbers are very general to keep it simple). Thats 10,000 clients 10 gateways (producers) 100 queues 1000 workers/handlers (consumers) The flow of each task is client-gateway-queue-worker Each client will have it's own hash/number which is used to route each task from the client to the same worker each time, with each task going through the same gateway and queue each time. Yet the algorithm handles distribution evenly, meaning each gateway, queue, and worker will have an even workload. My question is what exactly would this be called? Does such a thing already exist? This started off as a DHT, but I realized that DHTs can't do exactly what I need, so I started from scratch.

• What videoconferencing platforms work best for distributed software development teams?

  Today I had a religious experience: I participated in a videoconference using a high quality Polycom system. This made a huge difference in communication quality -- people that I had a terrible time understanding previously now sounded like Shakespeare. Seeing a high quality video image was enormously helpful. I asked operations how much the Polycom cost and they said that it cost $20K new and $4K off eBay. So this solution doesn't work for people who work from home or who work in offices but are in groups of 3 or fewer people. My budget for a videoconferencing system is a few hundred dollars per person. Skype is not nearly good enough. And I haven't seen a consumer webcam that is good enough either. Does such a solution exist? I'm looking to collaborate both with people who are close by (in the same city but not in the same room) and far away (on different continents).

• oDesk agency for subcontracting

  My question has to do with whether to create an oDesk agency (I've searched to verify that oDesk questions are appropriate). I have a project for which I was hired, and the client has given me authorization to subcontract a few hours of UI/UX expertise. I don't want to make the client hire the UI/UX guy directly; however, if I hire someone with my company account and then bill the client for the time, oDesk is taking 19% off the top (10% twice). I've checked their FAQ and filed a support ticket several days ago, but nobody has replied. If there's anyone who has had experience with oDesk agencies, do you think it can be handled this way? In other words, can I be the developer in my own agency while also having a UX person on the team?

• Help to understand directions of sprites in XNA

  If I want to move a sprite to the right and upwards in a 45 degree angle I use Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,-1); And if the sprite should move straight to right Vector2 direction = new Vector2(1,0); But how would I do if I want another directions, lets say somewhere between this values? I have tested with some other values, but then the sprite either moves to fast and or in another direction than I expected!? I suspect it's about normalize!? Another thing I have problem with to understand. I'm doing a simple asteroids game as a task in a class in C# and XNA. When the asteroids hit the window borders, I want them to bounce back in a random direction, but I can't do this before I understand how directions and Vector2 works. Help is preciated! Thanks!

• After upgrade my webcam mic records fast, high pitched, and squeaky only in Skype (maybe Sound Recorder problem too)

  After an upgrade to 11.10 which probably also updated Skype to 2.2.35 (not sure because I never checked the version before) the sound that comes back from an echo test is very high pitched and squeaky. I'm not sure if when in a call if the other person can't hear or just doesn't know what they are hearing. I am using a USB Logitech C250 Audacity records fine, gmail video chat works fine, but if I start sound recorder I get a "Could not negotiate format", followed by "Could not get/set settings from/on resource". I don't know if this is a Skype problem or a wider Pulse problem. My only real needs are the gmail and Audacity, though I have a couple of contacts that I can only Skype with.

• What's a standard productive vs total office hours ratio? [migrated]

  So it goes like this: we are keeping track of tasks using Redmine. We log time spent doing tasks, but at the end of the week if we add up all the time spent at those tasks there is no way a person has spent 40hs working. I think that's correct because offices have overhead (reading emails, politics, coffee, distractions). What would be a normal productive time vs total time spent ratio? Other areas in the organization just measure time spent in the office (with the rfid badges that open the door) but we don't like that approach and we are trying to convince Auditing to measure us using redmine instead.

• Our work name lately transformed to Revenue from Customer Support... Support? [on hold]

  I have been employeed from the same company (mobile phone business) for quite some time today like a Customer Support Represenative. I also have usually completed nicely until recently and loved the task. Into a Person Support/Revenue middleapproximately we've been converted by May and we've to purchase Television service to clients who call-in about their mobile phone service... They need us to become really manipulative with it. We havent had instruction on it. and our supervisors actually dont understand something about any of it possibly but need us to "Purchase! Purchase! Purchase!" ugggh. At I will become at my work any guidance? Revenue 've never be completed by me and I truly worry losing my work due to my performance. Revenue makes me uneasy... • Understanding how to go from a scene to what's actually rendered to screen in OpenGL?

  I want something that explains step by step how, after setting up a simple scene I can go from that 'world' space, to what's finally rendered on my screen (ie, actually implement something). I need the resource to clearly show how to derive and set up both orthographic and perspective projection matrices... basically I want to thoroughly understand what's going on behind the scenes and not plug in random things without knowing what they do. I've found lots of half explanations, presentation slides, walls of text, etc that aren't really doing much for me. I have a basic understanding of linear algebra/matrix transforms, and a rough idea of what's going on when you go from model space - screen, but not enough to actually implement it in code.

  I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ? • Should I be concerned about hAtom tags on my blog?

  I am using a theme that automatically adds hatom-entry, hatom-feed classes on my WordPress blog. I read that such tags/classes should be used for syndicated content. Anyway, then I ran a Rich Snippet Tool, which threw a "HAtomfeed" error. So I removed a "hfeed" div tag. Now, should I be concerned? Can this cause any problems? I still have a couple of these classes (listed below), and I just hope they do not effect my site's ranking. • Is there an application which organizes my "Downloads" folder automatically?

  I'm looking for an application which puts all files from my Downloads folder into a new generated folder (called like the date) per button press or automatically is able to move files to its destinated directory automatically (p.e. *.png files should be put into /home/user/pictures/random/, *.avi to /videos/, ...) If you are familiar with the DayFolder application: I'm looking for an application like that but for any folder (not only the Desktop). In my case that's Downloads because this folder gets cluttered on my PC very fast. Thanks for your advice/help!

• Kubuntu 13.04 Sound Problems

  Well, I have already looked into drivers, and sound cards whatnot, but what happens to me is this; sometimes sound wants to play, sometimes it does not! Not via speakers, not via headphones-nothing! I am unsure of what causes this problem, but it is a reoccurring issue through the versions of Kubuntu I run. I do not see any noteable symptoms about this, it is completely random! I have tested it on fresh installs and modified versions and I get the same problem, which annoys me. If updated Flash, tried youtube, tried various video players-the lot! Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

• Are there any third-party components that replicate OneNote?

  I have a client that wants me to add a OneNote-like interface to a desktop .NET application I'm creating for him. We cannot be sure all users will have Microsoft's OneNote installed, so I can't use InterOp or the like. So I am looking for a third-party component that provides the same fluid/freeform interface as OneNote, for capturing images, text, lists, etc. Any suggestions? I'm surprised that not only can I find none with Google, I'm not even finding others like me asking the question. I can't be the only person who thinks this is functionality worth including in our programs.

• In some games, we just let the main() loop be the Player object or Table object?

  I was thinking that let's say if there is a game of Blackjack or MasterMind, then we should have a class called Dealer or ComputerPal, which is how the computer interact with us (as a dealer for Blackjack or as the person giving hints for MasterMind). And then there should be a Player object, and the way to play one game is aPlayer.playGame but I noticed that a book was just using the main() loop to act as the player (or as the Controller of the game), calling the Dealer methods to dealer the cards, ask for player's action, etc... 1) Is this just a lazy way to model all the proper objects? 2) If more objects are to be added, who should call the aDealer.dealCards and then ask for aPlayer.askForAction? (because it is strange to let the Player handle all the logical steps). Should there be a Table object that handle all these logic and then to play one round of game, use aTable.playGame? What is a good object design for such game?
