• Flash CS5 and dynamic textfields

  I have a "shell" that started life in Flash CS3 (Flash 9, AS3) that has been since used with CS4 and now CS5. It creates TextFields in ActionScript for display (reading the content of those fields from XML). The text fields are either Myriad Pro Regular or Myriad Pro Semibold, both are embedded in the SWF from the Library (any given text field will only use one of those fonts) and using Advanced anti-aliasing. Once a FLA goes into CS5 is still has the same problem when saved back into CS4. The problem is the spacing between letters are now quite random, and the width of each text field is too wide (by about 10%). Changing the letterSpacing property (to something negative) makes this more noticeable. I read on here about Font.registerFont(MyriadPro) but that doesn't seem to be doing anything. Does anyone know how to make CS5 behave like previous versions of Flash? I'm using Flash Professional on Snow Leopard (as part of CS5 Web Premium).

• Regex with optional part doesn't create backreference

  I want to match an optional tag at the end of a line of text. Example input text: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog {tag} I want to match the part in curly-braces and create a back-reference to it. My regex looks like this: ^.*(\{\w+\})? (somewhat simplified, I'm also matching parts before the tag): It matches the lines ok (with and without the tag) but doesn't create a back-reference to the tag. If I remove the '?' character, so regex is: ^.*(\{\w+\}) It creates a back-reference to the tag but then doesn't match lines without the tag. I understood from http://www.regular-expressions.info/refadv.html that the optional operator wouldn't affect the backreference: Round brackets group the regex between them. They capture the text matched by the regex inside them that can be reused in a backreference, and they allow you to apply regex operators to the entire grouped regex. but must've misunderstood something. How do I make the tag part optional and create a back-reference when it exists?

• Changing FileNames using RegEx and Recursion

  Hello I'm trying to rename files that my program lists as having "illegal characters" for a SharePoint file importation. The illegal characters I am referring to are: ~ # % & * {} / \ | : < ? - "" What i'm trying to do is recurse through the drive, gather up a list of filenames and then through Regular Expressions, pick out file names from a List and try to replace the invalid characters in the actual filenames themselves. Anybody have any idea how to do this?   Wwhat is your favorite vim color scheme? I haven't found a great one yet, but what I'd like, in order of priority, are: Never confuses me. For example: When matching braces are highlighted, it's easy to see where the cursor is When I've got two or more tabs open, I can read all the titles and easily tell which one is active (maybe inactive ones look faded out) Very readable, both for regular code and for highlighting It would be nice if it was attractive I found one scheme that was ALMOST perfect (peaksea), but not quite - I couldn't read the titles of non-active tabs. So on a related note: anybody know a clear reference page for tweaking the colors of specific items?

• How to suppress quotes in Powershell commands to executables

  Is there any way to supress the enclosing quotation marks around each command-line argument that powershell likes to generate and then pass to external executables for command line arguments that have spaces in them? Here's the situation: One way to unpack many installers is a command of the form: msiexec /a <packagename> /qn TARGETDIR="<path to folder with spaces>" Trying to execute this from powershell has proven quite difficult. Powershell likes to enclose parameters with spaces in double-quotes. The following lines: msiexec /a somepackage.msi /qn 'TARGETDIR="c:\some path"' msiexec /a somepackage.msi /qn $('TARGETDIR="c:\some path"') $td = '"c:\some path"' msiexec /a somepackage.msi /qn TARGETDIR=$td All result in the following command line (as reported by the Win32 GetCommandLine() api): "msiexec" /a somepackage.msi /qn "TARGETDIR="c:\some path"" This command line: msiexec /a somepackage.msi TARGETDIR="c:\some path" /qn results in "msiexec" /a fooinstaller.msi "TARGETDIR=c:\some path" /qn It seems that Powershell likes to enclose the results of expressions meant to represent one argument in quotation marks when passing them to external executables. This works fine for most executables. However, MsiExec is very specific about the quoting rules it wants and won't accept any of the command lines Powershell generates for paths have have spaces in them. Is there any way to suppress this behavior?

• SMO ManagedComputer.ServiceInstances is empty

  I am trying to use SMO (VS 2010, SQL Server 2008) to connect to SQL Server and view the server protocol configuration. I can connect and list the Services and ClientProtocols as well as the account MSSQLSERVER service is running under. However, the ServerInstances collection is empty. The only instance on the target server is the default (MSSQLSERVER), shouldn't that be in the collection? How can I get an instance of it so I can inspect the ServerProtocols collection? • rename files with the same name

  Hi. I use the following function to rename thumbnails. For example, if I upload a file called "image.png" to an upload folder, and this folder already has a file named "image.png" in it, the new file automatically gets renamed to "image-copy-1.png". If there also is a file called "image-copy-1.png" it gets renamed to "image-copy-2.png" and so on. The following function returns the new filename. At least that's what it is supposed to do... The renaming doesn't seeem to work correctly, though. Sometimes it produces strange results, like: 1.png 1-copy-1.png 1-copy-2.png 1-copy-2-copy-1.png 1-copy-2-copy-3.png I hope you understand my problem, despite my description being somewhat complex... Can you tell me what went wrong here? • Is there an easy way to get the Scala REPL to reload a class or package?

  I almost always have a Scala REPL session or two open, which makes it very easy to give Java or Scala classes a quick test. But if I change a class and recompile it, the REPL continues with the old one loaded. Is there a way to get it to reload the class, rather than having to restart the REPL? • Reordering arguments using recursion (pro, cons, alternatives)

  I find that I often make a recursive call just to reorder arguments. For example, here's my solution for endOther from codingbat.com: Given two strings, return true if either of the strings appears at the very end of the other string, ignoring upper/lower case differences (in other words, the computation should not be "case sensitive"). Note: str.toLowerCase() returns the lowercase version of a string. public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { return a.length() < b.length() ? endOther(b, a) : a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } I'm very comfortable with recursions, but I can certainly understand why some perhaps would object to it. There are two obvious alternatives to this recursion technique: Swap a and b traditionally public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { if (a.length() < b.length()) { String t = a; a = b; b = t; } return a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } Not convenient in a language like Java that doesn't pass by reference Lots of code just to do a simple operation An extra if statement breaks the "flow" Repeat code public boolean endOther(String a, String b) { return (a.length() < b.length()) ? b.toLowerCase().endsWith(a.toLowerCase()) : a.toLowerCase().endsWith(b.toLowerCase()); } Explicit symmetry may be a nice thing (or not?) • Racket: change dotted pair to list

  I have a program that recursively calls a hashtable and prints out data from it. Unfortunately my hashtable seems to be saving data as dotted pairs so when I call the hashtable I get an error saying that there is no data for it because its tryign to search the hashtable for a dotted pair instead of a list. Is there an easy way to make the dotted pair into a regular list? IE im getting '("was" . "beginning") instead of '("was" "beginning") Is there a way to change this without re-writing how my hashtable store stuff? im using the let function to set a variable to this and then calling another function based on this variable (let ((data ( list-ref(hash-ref Ngram-table key) (random (length (hash-ref Ngram-table key)))))) is there a way to make the value stored in data just a list like this '("var1" "var2") instead of a dotted pair? edit: im getting dotted pairs because im using let to set data to the part of the hashtable's key and one of the elements in that hash.

• Connecting to SQL Server with Visual Studio Express Editions

  I find it odd that in Visual C# 2008 Express edition, when you use the database explorer, your options are: 1) Microsoft Access 2) SQL Server Compact 3.5, and 3) SQL Server Database File. BUT if you use Visual Web Developer 2008 Express, you can connect to a regular SQL Server, Oracle, ODBC, etc. For people developing command-line or other C# apps that need to talk to a SQL Server database, do you really need to build your LINQ/Data Access code with one IDE (Visual Web Developer) and your program in another (Visual C#)? It's not a hard workaround, but it seems weird. If Microsoft wanted to force you to upgrade to Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server, why would they include that feature in one of their free IDEs but not the other? I feel like I might be missing something (like how to do it all in Visual C#). Thanks! Tom

• iPhone landscape navigation back action shows vertical view transition?

  I have a regular UINavigationController and I push a series of UIViewController into the stack. The view transition for push controller is horizontal animation transition: [self.navigationController pushViewController:controller animated:YES]; However, when I press the Back button on the navigation bar, the view transition animation is vertical (vertically dropping down the previous controller/view). I don't seem to find any way to make this horizontal. This happens only in Landscape mode. Portrait mode the transition all happens as horizontal flip transition. Can anyone shed any light on this?   The docs for Silverlight's IsolatedStorageFile.GetUserStoreForApplication just say that the isolated storage is specific to the "application", and that each different application will have its own storage independent of all other "applications" (but with one quota for the entire domain). That's great, but I haven't found anything yet that explains just what "application" is supposed to mean (either in the Silverlight docs or the regular .NET Framework docs). What information does Silverlight, in particular, use to decide that "this is application A" and "this is application B"? Does it just go off the URI to the .xap file, or what?

  I am trying to get Hudson to run my ruby based selenium tests. I have installed the Selenium Grid plugin, but I don't want to have the RC's running as slaves in a Hudson cluster. The reason for this is I don't want to waste the next six years of my life trying to configure each of my projects in various Windows environments. Hudson currently pulls each project from Github and builds it just fine. With a regular Selenium Grid setup, I am able to edit the grid_configuration.yml file to represent the various environments I wish to tests against, then pass environment variables to the rake task that runs the test i.e. which browser/platfom to run on and the URL of the application under test -- usually a port on the hub machine running in a specific environment. In this way, the machines on which the RC's run don't need to know anything about the source code of my apps, they just need to have selenium-grid installed and have registered with the hub. Is there a way of elegantly emulating this with Hudson?

  When i write a jQuery plugin i like to specify options for spacings the CSS way. I wrote a function that returns a CSS String as values in a object. 5px 10px returns top: 5px, right: 10px, bottom: 5px, left: 10px Now i often use the returned values to do some calculations and its not very nice to have to extract the measuring unit every time... But if date is in some string like "Abc May 26 2008" then date will not be matched.So for that can we use regular expression here ? If yes how ?

  I have a windows forms app with a textbox control that I want to only accept integer values. In the past I've done this kind of validation by overloading the KeyPress event and just removing characters which didn't fit the specification. I've looked at the MaskedTextBox control but I'd like a more general solution that could work with perhaps a regular expression, or depend on the values of other controls. Ideally this would behave such that pressing a non numeric character would either produce no result or immediately provide the user with feedback about the invalid character.

• Proper usage (best practices) of Browsable attribute in .NET for runtime grid component behavior

  I understand how Browsable attribute is supposed to work. It's supposed to hide a property from showing up in a PropertyGrid in design time. It also has another effect in that it will stop a Property from showing up in components such as Grids, or specifically Infragistics WinGrid. I am not sure if it has this behaviour on regular Windows Forms grids. This works, but it doesn't sound like Browsable is being use as intended when being used for 'Run time' displaying of a property on a grid component. Any literature from Microsoft on proper use. Even though it works, I don't want to use this attribute to hide columns on a grid bound to a business object if it's not indeed the correct usage of the attribute, but rather something some grid vendors decided to use to determine property visibility on their grids.

• No colors when using autospec

  When I'm using autospec to test a non-Rails Ruby project, I always have trouble getting my tests to show up red or green. When I run a regular 'spec spec/ --color' command I get normal red/green responses. I've tried putting all sorts of commands in the .autotest file and I can't get that to work. Also, in my Rails projects, I don't get this problem. Note: I do have the ZenTest(4.2.1) and redgreen (1.2.2) gems installed. • Using glassfish gem with SSL

  My goal is to deploy a simple rails application on a windows server using the glassfish gem. I have no trouble getting the glassfish gem to work with regular http, however I now need to add SSL security and I cannot find any links on how to enable https in the glassfish gem. Has anyone succeeded in setting up the glassfish gem to support SSL? Are there any other ways to serve a rails application over SSL on windows without any additional software installation (e.g. IIS, Glassfish, jBoss)?

• How to split a path platform independent?

  I'm using the following code to get an array with all sub directories from a given path. String[] subDirs = path.split(File.separator); I need the array to check if certain folders are at the right place in this path. This looked like a good solution until findBugs complains that File.separator is used as a regular expression. It seems that passing the windows file separator to a function that is building a regex from it is a bad idea because the backslash being an escape character. How can I split the path in a cross platform way without using File.separator? Or is code like this okay? String[] subDirs = path.split("/");
