• Is there a way to extracting semantic informations from PDF? (converting PDF to pure XHTML)

  Hi. I'm finding a way to extract semantic structural informations (like title, heading, paragraph or lists) from PDF. Because I want to get a pure structural data from PDF. Finally, I want to create an pure XHTML from the PDF. With only structural informations. No design or layout. I know, PDF can be created without any structural information. I don't consider those PDFs. Only regularly well-structured PDFs are considered. I'm new to PDF. So I don't know it offers regular semantic structure or not. If it exists, it's library will offer it. So I want to know whether PDF spec has those information, and best way to get those information if exists.

• clam anti-virus is slowing down my server performance

  Hey guys, I just installed clam av http://sourceforge.net/projects/php-clamav/ for scanning file uploads on my linux VPN running php. The problem is that for some reason just initiating the extension in the php ini file slows down my entire network. Regular requests such as changing pages that should take less than 1 second take 5. • Packaging up ASPX, CSS and image files

  I'm designing a simple framework for small websites to be used in an intranet. The websites will all be similar, but there will be a few pages, or controls on pages, that are different. I would like to be able to version and maintain the common framework part of the websites as if they were a regular library - if I need to update CSS then I only have to do it in one place. Can I package-up ASPX files, images and CSS and distribute them like this? What am I missing? My goal is to allow the developers of the few core content pages to get up and running with the websites quickly, with standard styles and images. Thanks!

• Is 1/0 a legal Java expression?

  The following compiles fine in my Eclipse: final int j = 1/0; // compiles fine!!! // throws ArithmeticException: / by zero at run-time Java prevents many "dumb code" from even compiling in the first place (e.g. "Five" instanceof Number doesn't compile!), so the fact this didn't even generate as much as a warning was very surprising to me. The intrigue deepens when you consider the fact that constant expressions are allowed to be optimized at compile time: public class Div0 { public static void main(String[] args) { final int i = 2+3; final int j = 1/0; final int k = 9/2; } } Compiled in Eclipse, the above snippet generates the following bytecode (javap -c Div0) Compiled from "Div0.java" public class Div0 extends java.lang.Object{ public Div0(); Code: 0: aload_0 1: invokespecial #8; //Method java/lang/Object."<init>":()V 4: return public static void main(java.lang.String[]); Code: 0: iconst_5 1: istore_1 // "i = 5;" 2: iconst_1 3: iconst_0 4: idiv 5: istore_2 // "j = 1/0;" 6: iconst_4 7: istore_3 // "k = 4;" 8: return } As you can see, the i and k assignments are optimized as compile-time constants, but the division by 0 (which must've been detectable at compile-time) is simply compiled as is. javac 1.6.0_17 behaves even more strangely, compiling silently but excising the assignments to i and k completely out of the bytecode (probably because it determined that they're not used anywhere) but leaving the 1/0 intact (since removing it would cause an entirely different program semantics). So the questions are: Is 1/0 actually a legal Java expression that should compile anytime anywhere? What does JLS say about it? If this is legal, is there a good reason for it? What good could this possibly serve?

• Encoding MySQL text fields into UTF-8 text files - problems with special characters

  I'm writing a php script to export MySQL database rows into a .txt file formatted for Adobe InDesign's internal markup. Exports work, but when I encounter special characters like é or umlauts, I get weird symbols (eg Chloë Hanslip instead of Chloë Hanslip). Rather than run a search and replace for every possible weird character, I need a better method. I've checked that when the text hits the database, it's saved properly - in the database I see the special characters. My export code basically runs some regular expressions to put in the InDesign code tags, and I'm left with the weird symbols. If I just output the text to the browser (rather than prompt for a text file download), it displays properly. When I save the file I use this code: header("Content-disposition: attachment; filename=test.txt"); header("Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8"); I've tried various combinations of utf8_encode() and iconv() to no avail. Can anybody point me in the right direction here?

  Hi, I've just added a ttf file to the project (c# 2008 express) as "file" and build option to embeded resource. I'm having problems when trying to set this font like this: (I know the next line is wrong...) this.label1.Font = AlarmWatch.Properties.Resources.Baby_Universe; Error 1 Cannot implicitly convert type 'byte[]' to 'System.Drawing.Font' C:\Users\hongo\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\AlarmWatch\AlarmWatch\Form1.Designer.cs 57 32 AlarmWatch I know it is byte[] cause I've set the option build as embeded resource, but...comparing with this line that is correct "this.label1.Font = new System.Drawing.Font("OCR A Extended", 24F, System.Drawing.FontStyle.Regular, System.Drawing.GraphicsUnit.Point, ((byte)(0)));" How can I set this.label1 to use the new font??? thanks

• git- how to troubleshoot "cannot find command"

  I need help getting git extensions to run with msysgit. I have had bad luck with extensions git-tfs and git-fetchall, in both cases it is the same problem. The addon will require a file to be placed where git can find it (git-tfs.exe and git-fetchall.sh). I understand this to mean the files need to be in a directory that is in the 'PATH' environment variable. In both cases I get stuck at this point: $ git-diffall bash: git-diffall: command not found When I run echo %PATH% from a regular command shell, it shows my path variable includes the directories where git-diffall and git-tfs are. How can I debug this, or am I missing something? Is there a way within msysgit to verify the command search path is what I expect?

  Hi Guys, I have been using the java.util.regex.* classes for Regular Expression in Java and all good so far. But today I have a different requirement. For example consider the pattern to be "aabb". Now if the input String is aa it will definitely not match, however there is still possibility that if I append bb it becomes aabb and it matches. However if I would have started with cc, no matter what I append it will never match. I have explored the Pattern and Matcher class but didn't find any way of achieving this. The input will come from user and system have to wait till pattern matches or it will never match irrespective of any input further. Any clue? Thanks.

• Would a Socket Connection Outperform an Intarvaled Database Sweep and Requests?

  I'm building a small chat application to add to an existing framework. There will only be 20-50 users MAX at any one time. I was wondering if I could get away with updating a cache file containing (semi) live chat data for whichever users happen to be chatting just by performing timed queries and regular AJAX refreshes for new data as opposed to learning how to open and maintain a socket connection. I'm sure there are existing chat plug-ins out there. But I just had a hell of a time installing one and I could see building the whole damn thing taking just as much time as plugging one in. • For reliable code, NModel, Spec Explorer, F# or other?

  I've got a business app in C#, with unit tests. Can I increase the reliability and cut down on my testing time and expense by using NModel or Spec Explorer? Alternately, if I were to rewrite it in F# (or even Haskell), what kinds (if any) of reliability increase might I see? Code Contracts? ASML? I realize this is subjective, and possibly argumentative, so please back up your answers with data, if possible. :) Or maybe an worked example, such as Eric Evans Cargo Shipping System? If we consider Unit tests to be pecific and strong theorems, checked quasi-statically on particular “interesting instances” and Types to be general but weak theorems (usually checked statically), and contracts to be general and strong theorems, checked dynamically for particular instances that occur during regular program operation (from B. Pierce's Types Considered Harmful, where do these other tools fit? We could pose the analogous question for Java, using Java PathFinder, Scala, etc.

  Is that possible to make a UIToolbarButton pass an object to its target by using some exoteric method (as it seems not to be possible using regular button use)? I mean something like UIBarButtonItem *Button = [[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithImage:buttonImage style:UIBarButtonItemStylePlain target:self action:@selector(doSomething:) **withObject:usingThis**]; I know I can trigger a method that will launch the full method with the object, but for the sake of elegance I was trying to minimize the code...   Hi sir/madam! I am putting up a small website via webs.com for me and my friends that could also be accessible via wap, i.e. mobile internet, and I want to add links to my site that downloads .jar files. I uploaded the files on my site, and links to the .jar files went fine, but I also need links for .jad files (for some mobile phones that require .jad files FIRST then .jar). I tried doing a regular link for the .jad files, but it simply displayed the content of the .jad file. It wasn't installed or downloaded. What should I do? Or am I at a wrong website? Thanks!

• View controllers inside tab bar controller not auto-rotating

  In an iPad app, I have five regular view controllers (not navigation controllers or anything like that) inside a tab bar controller. The tab bar controller is just a plain UITabBarController declared in the app delegate. All the view controllers return YES in the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation method. On both the simulator and device, on rotation, the tab bar rotates properly but the currently selected view controller (call it A) does not. If I switch to another view controller B and then back to A (without rotating the device again), A appears correctly rotated. This happens with any of the five view controllers Why doesn't the currently selected view controller rotate and how do I fix it? Thanks.

• Flash AS3 and XML: way to fix line breaks in htmlText that uses <b> tags in the xml?

  I'm importing text in from an xml file and i'm using htmlText to try to keep some styling with tags. I have both the regular and bold face font embedded, and the bolding works fine. The problem is that it ads spaces around the words in bold like a paragraph indent and then makes a line-break after them. What's going on, is there a way to fix? fromxmlText.htmlText = theXML.contenttext; If I pull the text in from a txt file it will work fine, but taking it out of an xml file causing funky formatting. lil' help?

• Enabling full documentation for J2EE in eclipse

  I'm new to Eclipse and am using it currently to play with J2EE. When using Ctrl+Space for types/functions from the regular Java libraries I get a full description (i.e. general description of the type, what are the arguments of the method for, etc.). However I don't get the same for J2EE types. For example, when using Ctrl+Space on methods of the HttpSession class I get only names like "arg0" or "obj" and no description. Is there some kind of a package I can install to remedy this?

• Handling Special char such as ^ÛY, ^ÛR in java

  Hi, Has anybody encountered special char such as ^ÛY, ^ÛR ? Q1. How do I do an ftp of the files containing these chars? The chars are not seen once I do a ftp on AIX (bi or ascii) and hence I am unable to see my program to replace these, working. Q2. My java program doesn't seem to recognise these or replace these if I search for these explicitly (^ÛY, ^ÛR ) in the file however a replace using regular expression seems to work (I could only see the difference in the length of the string). My program is executed on AIX. Any insights why java cannot recognise these? Q3. Does the Oracle database recognise these chars? An update is failing where my program indicates the string to be of lesser length and without these characters but the db complains "value too large for column" as the string to be updated contains these chars and hence longer. thanks in advance, RJ

  I would like to display real time updates on a web page (based on a status field in a database table that is altered by an external process). Based on my research, there are several ways of doing this. Long Polling (Comet) - This seems to be complex to implement Regular Polling - I can have an AJAX method trigger a database hit every 5seconds to get the current status. But I fear this will have performance issues. Then I read about using SqlCacheDependency - basically the cache gets invalidated based on a field in the table. I am assuming I can use the event trigerred when the cache is invalidated to show the new update to the user? What's an easy solution that will not have performance issues? anyone?

• Android - Notification bar height from a service

  Hi, The application I'm working on is a service which runs in the background in android. The problem is that I need to determine the height of the notification bar for some functionality of the service. I found a number of solutions for this, for regular activities - a view inside an activity can determine its own height without the notification bar, based on checking its actual view size from its onSizeChanged event, after it is already drawn. However, this is not applicable to a service which has no physical view drawn. I would really appreciate any ideas on getting the size of the notification bar at a system level, perhaps?   I want to write a function that geometrically links performance data which is usually provided as percentages, so the function will basically return (1+a)*(1+b)*(1+c)* … *(1+x)-1 This should be done using LibreOffice-calc and it should behave similarly to the regular sum function. As you may throw any number of arguments at sum I would like to be able to do the same with my alternative geoSum function but I am unable to find suitable documentation on handling a variable number of arguments with variable types (i.e. an arbitrary mix of numbers, cells and ranges). How would I have to specify the arguments to my LibreOffice-Basic function and how would I have to interpret it?

• Xcode 4.2 how include one project into another one?

  I keep searching, but cannot find a clear and simple explanation on how to include one XCode project, along with all of it's sub-classes into another project. I routinely see stuff like that in sample projects that I download off the web, but do not know how to do this myself. Within XCode, along with .h and .m files, and folders, there's a whole new project, starting with a blue xcode project icon, that is expandable to contain everything within the project. Please, can someone explain to me step by step what do I need to do to add one XCode project into another one? I've seen a ton of one liners like "header search paths", but that does not tell me much. UPDATE: After re-reading the documentation, I realized that the project to include must be dragged ONTO the BLUE project icon of the parent project. Regular sources can be dragged anywhere, but a project must be dragged onto a project. Thank you!

• Should you remove all warnings in your Verilog or VHDL design? Wh or why not?

  In (regular) software I have worked at companies where the gcc option -Wall is used to show all warnings. Then they need to be dealt with. With non-trivial FPGA/ASIC design in Verilog or VHDL there are often many many warnings. Should I worry about all of them? Do you have any specific techniques to suggest? My flow is mainly for FPGAs (Altera and Xilinx in particular), but I assume the same rules would apply to ASIC design, possibly more so due to the inability to change the design after it is built.
