• Detecting the axis of rotation from a pointcloud

  I'm trying to auto-detect the axis of rotation on a 3d pointcloud. In other words, if I took a small 3d pointcloud, chose a single axis of rotation, and make several copies of the points at different rotation angles, then I get a larger pointcloud. The input to my algorithm is the larger pointcloud, and the desired output is the single axis of symmetry. And eventually I'm going to compute the correspondences between points that are rotations of each other. The size of the larger pointcloud is on the order of 100K points, and the number of rotational copies made is unknown. The rotation angles in my case have constant deltas, but don't necessarily span 360 degrees. For example, I might have 0, 20, 40, 60. Or I might have 0, 90, 180, 270. But I won't have 0, 13, 78, 212 (or if I do, I don't care to detect it). This seems like a computer vision problem, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to precisely find the axis. The input will generally be very clean, close to float accuracy.

  I'm writing a TCP chat server ( programming language does not mather ). It's a school project for my nephew, so it won't be released, and all questions I'm asking are just for my knowledge :). . Some of the things it will support: chatting between users ( doh ), it will be multithreaded sending each other files I know I could easily get away with all the stuff above if I go with serialization, and just send objects from client to server and back. But, if I do that, it will be limited to a specific programming language ( meaning clients written in other programming languages may not be able to deserialize the objects ). What would be the way to go so that other clients written in other languages could be supported? One way to go, off the top of my head, would be to go in this direction: the server & the client communicate by sending messages & chunks ( in lieu of other names ). Here's what I mean by this: every time the client/server wants to send something ( text message or file ) it will first send a simple text message ( newline terminated ) with the number of the chunks it will send. Example: command 4,20,30,40,50 Where command would be something like instant-message or file,4 would be the number of chunks to be sent, 20 would be the size in bytes of the first chunk, 30 of the 2nd, and so forth. after the message was sent, the client/server will start sending chunks ( of sizes mentioned in the sent message ). What do you think about implementing the client/server communication this way? What better options are there?

• How can I change jtable height at runtime

  I hava a JFrame with multiple JPanels of similar width aligned one below other. I use one of these JPanels to display a JTable which is the last JPanel of the lot. This JPanel has a JScrollpane as a child component. This is where I try to add my table dynamically. Initial height of this JScrollpane is set to 40. I designed above template using Netbeans 6.8 Now I'm trying to add the table to the JPanel. When a button is pressed below code snippet is called. The class which includes this code extends javax.swing.JFrame class. I am expecting below code would adjust table height according to the row count and display the table.   Hello, I have the following problem. Basically I have a form with an option to submit up to 3 images. Right now, after each submission it creates 3 records for album table and 3 records for images. I need it to be one record for album and 3 for images, plus to link images to the album. I hope it all makes sense... Here is my structure.   for ten years we've been using the same custom sorting on our tables, i'm wondering if there is another solution which involves fewer updates, especially since today we'd like to have a replication/publication date and would'nt like to have our replication replicate unnecessary entries. i had a look into nested sets, but it does'nt seem to do the job for us. base table: id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 2 20 3 30 after inserting insert into table (a_sort) values(15) an entry at the second position. id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 2 20 3 30 4 15 ordering the table with select * from table order by a_sort and resorting all the a_sort entries, updating at least id=(2,3,4) will of course produce the desired output id | a_sort ---+------- 1 10 4 20 2 30 3 40 the column names, the column count, datatypes, a possible join, possible triggers or the way the resorting is done is/are irrelevant to the problem. also we've found some pretty neat ways to do this task fast. only; how the heck can we reduce the updates in the db to 1 or 2 max. seems like an awfully common problem. the captain obvious in me thougth once "use an a_sort float(53), insert using a fixed value of ordervaluefirstentry+abs(ordervaluefirstentry-ordervaluenextentry)/2".. but this would only allow around 1040 "in between" entries - so never resorting seems a bit problematic ;)

• Determining Best Table Structure for MySQL Performance

  I'm working on a browser-based RPG for one of my websites, and right now I'm trying to determine the best way to organize my SQL tables for performance and maintenance. Here's my question: Does the number of columns in an SQL table affect the speed in which it can be queried? I am not a newbie when it comes to PHP or MySQL. I used to develop things with the common goal of getting them to work, but I've recently advanced to the stage where a functional program is not good enough unless it's fast and reliable. Anyways, right now I have a members table that has around 15 columns. It contains information such as the player's username, password, email, logins, page views, etcetera. It doesn't contain any information on the player's progress in the game, however. If I added columns for things such as army size, gold, turns, and whatnot, then it could easily rise to around 40 or 50 total columns. Oh, and my database structure IS normalized. Will a table with 50 columns that gets constantly queried be a bad idea? Should I split it into two tables; one for the user's general information and one for the user's game statistics? I know I could check the query time myself, but I haven't actually created the tables yet and I think I'd be better off with some professional advice on this important decision for my game.   I would like to achieve a simplified result similar to the "Color Scale" function in Excel i.e. gradient colouring based on the lowest value (red) to highest value (green), except in my cross tab using Crystal Reports 2008. • How can I simplify this user interface?

  I'm writing an internal-tools webapp; one of the central pages in this tool has a whole bunch of related commands the user can execute by clicking one of a number of buttons on the page, like this: Ideally, all of the buttons would fit on one line. Ordinarily I'd do this by changing each widget from a button with a (sometimes long) text label to a simple, compact icon - e.g. could be replaced by a familiar disk icon: Unfortunately, I don't think I can do this for every button on this particular page. Some of the command buttons just don't have good visual analogs - "VDS List". Or, if I needed to add another button in the future for some other kind of list, I'd need two icons that both communicate "list-ness" and which list. So, I'm still considering this option, but I don't love it. So it's come time for me to add yet another button to this section (don't you love internal tools?). There's not enough room on that single line to fit the new button. Aside from the icon solution I already mentioned, what would be a good* way to simplify/declutter/reduce or otherwise improve this UI? *As per Jakob Nielsen's article, I'd like to think that a dropdown menu is not the solution.

  Hi there, Thanks to the wonderful people on this forum, I have overcome most of my Core Data woes. However one persists, and I'm certain it is a simple fix. I have a recipe app that parses an XML doc on load and puts the data in Core Data. Then I search that Core Data for particular recipes, ingredients, etc. Everything is working with one exception... I cannot do anything with the data I retrieve. For example, I search the core data for "eggplant" and get this at the end of the process: "<RecipeData: 0x6112a40> (entity: RecipeData; id: 0x6113880 <x-coredata:///RecipeData/tCDE9A0EE-DA3F-4BD0-AEF8-3C038586991D4> ; data: {\n ingredients = \"Eggplant|Cheese|Tomatoes|\";\n name = \"Eggplant Parm\";\n time = 40;\n})" How do I get the info out of there?   I need to process a list of files. The processing action should not be repeated for the same file. My problem is that when the input size is 1000, it takes 30 minutes - HALF AN HOUR - on Windows/Visual Studio 2008 Express (both Debug and Release builds). For the same input, it takes only 40 seconds to run on Linux/gcc! What could be the problem? The action foo() takes only a very short time to execute, when used separately. Should I be using something like vector::reserve for the map?

  Is there a command that can append one array of char onto another? Something that would theoretically work like this: //array1 has already been set to "The dog jumps " //array2 has already been set to "over the log" append(array2,array1); cout << array1; //would output "The dog jumps over the log"; This is a pretty easy function to make I would think, I am just surprised there isn't a built in command for it. *Edit I should have been more clear, I didn't mean changing the size of the array. If array1 was set to 50 characters, but was only using 10 of them, you would still have 40 characters to work with. I was thinking an automatic command that would essentially do: //assuming array1 has 10 characters but was declared with 25 and array2 has 5 characters int i=10; int z=0; do{ array1[i] = array2[z]; ++i; ++z; }while(array[z] != '\0'); I am pretty sure that syntax would work, or something similar.

  Hi, I'm having a problem reading data from a text file into ms sql. I created a text file in my c:\ called data.txt, but for some reason ms sql server cannot find the file. I get the error "Cannot bulk load. The file "c:\data.txt" does not exist." Any ideas? • Store Business Rules in XML Document, Validate afterwards in Java, how?

  Example XML Rules document: <user> <username> <not-null/> <capitals value="false"/> <max-length value="15"/> </username> <email> <not-null/> <isEmail/> <max-length value="40"/> </email> </user> How do I implement this? I'm starting from scratch, what I currently have is a User-class, and a UserController which saves the User object in de DB (through a Service-layer and Dao-layer), basic Spring MVC. I can't use Spring MVC Validation however in our Model-classes, I have to use an XML document so an Admin can change the rules I think I need a pattern which dynamically builds an algorithm based on what is provided by the XML Rules document, but I can't seem to think of anything other than a massive amount of if-statements. I also have nothing for the parsing yet and I'm not sure how I'm gonna (de)couple it from the actual implementation of the validation-process.

• How to speed up drawing of scaled image? Audio playback chokes during window resize.

  I am writing an audio player for OSX. One view is a custom view that displays a waveform. The waveform is stored as a instance variable of type NSImage with an NSBitmapImageRep. The view also displays a progress indicator (a thick red line). Therefore, it is updated/redrawn every 30 milliseconds. Since it takes a rather long time to recalculate the image, I do that in a background thread after every window resize and update the displayed image once the new image is ready. In the meantime, the original image is scaled to fit the view like this: // The drawing rectangle is slightly smaller than the view, defined by // the two margins. NSRect drawingRect; drawingRect.origin = NSMakePoint(sideEdgeMarginWidth, topEdgeMarginHeight); drawingRect.size = NSMakeSize([self bounds].size.width-2*sideEdgeMarginWidth, [self bounds].size.height-2*topEdgeMarginHeight); [waveform drawInRect:drawingRect fromRect:NSZeroRect operation:NSCompositeSourceOver fraction:1]; The view makes up the biggest part of the window. During live resize, audio starts choking. Selecting the "big" graphic card on my Macbook Pro makes it less bad, but not by much. CPU utilization is somewhere around 20-40% during live resizes. Instruments suggests that rescaling/redrawing of the image is the problem. Once I stop resizing the window, CPU utilization goes down and audio stops glitching. I already tried to disable image interpolation to speed up the drawing like this: [[NSGraphicsContext currentContext] setImageInterpolation:NSImageInterpolationNone]; That helps, but audio still chokes during live resizes. Do you have an idea how to improve this? The main thing is to prevent the audio from choking.

• How do I show the selected item in an HTML <select> at the top

  I have an HTML select that looks something like this (values are fake) <select size="40"> <option value="1">What would you do if I sang out of tune,</option> <option value="2">Would you stand up and walk out on me?</option> ... more <option value="156">Lend me your ears, and I'll sing you a song,</option> <option selected="selected" value="157">I will try not to sing out of key.</option> <option value="158">Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends.</option> ... more <option value="507">I get high with a little help from my friends.</option> <option value="509">Gonna' try with a little from my friends.</option> </select> The problem that I have is that when displaying the list after loading the page and the selected option is in the middle of the very long list, IE scrolls the selected option to the top of the list (which is what I want). Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari show it at the bottom (which I don't want). I have to assume that IE is doing it wrong since everyone else shows it at the bottom. How can I force the browsers to display the selected item at the top of the list. I do not want to put it at the top of the list, I just want it to scroll such that the selected option is at the top. bonus, it would be even better if I can put it fourth from the top, but I can live without that if it's too difficult.

Msg come's from txt text is filled with "000002D200C133E1\r\nPutFifoUnicast 40 : Handle 722 :"< so it goes wrong in or reader.Read or in the List so i looked further: public List<PlugwiseMessage> Read(string[] serialData) { Console.WriteLine(serialData); List<PlugwiseMessage> output = new List<PlugwiseMessage>(); Console.WriteLine(output); Both (serialData) as (output); are empty. So can i assume that the problem is in: Read(string[] serialData) But now the questions, Is Read(string[] serialData) something which is a Windows.Refence or is is from a Method ? and IF this is so is this then reader.READ (how can i find this)? (answered my own question proberly)(method reader)(private PlugwiseReader reader) So why isn't is working trough the serialData ? or is it the List<PlugwiseMessage> part, but i have no idea how it is filled can sombody help me ?
