• Where can you see the data that's been recorded by a tracking cookie?

  I've always read that cookies can, and do, store sensitive information such as OTHER websites that you've visited outside the one to which the cookie belongs. I've started to read up about it and can see that it's persistent cookies which typically do this - and well I've started to look through cookie files on my computer - but I can't see any telling info in them! Just a few jumbled lines and not the scary urls of other sites that I'm looking for. How do I view them? Or is the raw data of visited urls only ever stored on the server end of the site that's tracking me? I'm on Win7 and can look at cookies from FF 12, Chrome 18, IE9 and Safari 5.1. Thanks for illuminating this once and for all.

• download speed is fast but transfer rate is slow

  I've just changed ISP and I'm pretty disappointed with the transfer rate. My previous connection has a download speed of 1.08 Mb/s as seen from this site: http://speedtest.net and the download transfer rate is about 100kb/s for sites that doesn't limit their bandwidth. Now my connection has about 2Mb/s download speed but the transfer rate is dancing from 20-50kb/s . I was expecting a speed much higher than this because of the download speed that I'm getting when I'm testing. The question is what's the difference between transfer rate and download speed, is it normal to have a high download speed but low transfer rate, should the download speed be proportional to the transfer rate?

• CentOS default never fsck root partition on start up?

  Most documentation or sites will say use "tune2fs -l " to check if the system will do fsck on the system partitions on next boot, in particular, should look at "Mount count" and "Maximum mount count" values. However, I notice for default CentOS 5 or 6 installation, when I check against the root partition, I always noticed something like this from tune2fs output: ... Mount count: 91 Maximum mount count: -1 Last checked: Thu Oct 29 18:48:14 2009 Check interval: 0 (<none>) ... i.e. the max. mount count is set to "-1". That makes me wonder does it mean CentOS (or Red Hat) won't check the root partition at all? I check the fstab, the last number for root partition is still "1" as usual. If the OS does fsck the root partition during startup, how can I tell when (i.e. after how many reboots or when) will the OS will start fsck the root parition during startup?

I have had her dump temp Internet files and put the site in her trusted sites but nothing is working. I think thins started after some Windows updates but not sure. Any ideas on this one? BTW, it's not turned off kin Central Admin and none of her group memberships have changed.

• Are there any good apps for managing vCard vcf files?

  I've just got an Android handset and the import of the SIM contacts from my old phone has left them in a mess; lack of capitalisation, funny character substitutions, odd delimiters etc. I have exported the contacts list as a vcf and while I could manually edit this file, I was really after a desktop app that could do formatting, search & replace etc. There are Android apps that do this but, as much as I like the phone's UI, the prospect of sorting hundreds of contacts via it doesn't exactly fill me with joy. A quick Google just threw up lots of questionable download sites, hoping someone can suggest a lightweight alternative

• How can I configure firefox to open links in the same window, but requests from external application

  I hate it, when sites decide for me, which links should open in a new window, and which in the same. The back-button doesn't work. Good thing is, firefox has the option browser.link.open_newwindow. If I set this to 1, all links with target=blank open in the same window, as it should be. But now also clicks in external programs (like the email-client or newsreader) on links open this in the same window, destroying the already opened website. How can I configure firefox to open links in a website always in the same window, but in external programs opened URLs always in a new one?

• Printing from a Linux using an Acer Aspire Netbook

  A friend asked me to check why their Linux Acer Aspire netbook can't print to their HP printer. When I plugged in the USB cable, the a "balloon" popped up on the netbook saying it was installing the printer. But the printing does not work. I was able to get into a Settings area and click on Print Test Page but nothing happened. If it was Ubuntu, I would go into the Log File Viewer, but I couldn't find that on whatever Linux flavor the Acer is running. I couldn't even figure out how to get to a terminal (shell) window. I tried searching the HP and Acer sites but nothing seems to apply to this issue.

• Internet (Flash) video without a PC

  I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? So far we have: Nintendo Wii Playstation 3 XBox 360 And we're looking to purchase a current generation AppleTV. update The sites are YogisAnonymmous.com and YogaJournal.com, both are confirmed as Flash.

  I was wondering if someone has observations (or specifications) of different mobile processors power consumption levels when idle? Let's define 'idle' with 'browsing web sites trough wifi, no flash, no multitasking'. There are different series processors, recognizable by their first letter. The letter tells about the maximum TDP. For example: T - 30-39W P - max 25W L - 12-19W U - <12W However this is about maximum consumptions during load. Is there any difference in power levels when the CPU is idling?

• How to restore a previous firefox session?

  FF 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 9.10. I have (of course) session saving (the built-in one) enabled. I closed the main FF window, but the "Downloads" window was still open. And on reopen, it had forgotten about the previous tabs. This is annoying is hell, and yes, I should report (or check for) a bug. If I could stomach bugzilla, that is. :P I have the sessionstore.js file with this older session (scanning it with less showed many of the sites I know had been open). How do I get FF to use this session file? I did try to remove sessionstore.* and copy the sessionstore.js (or .bak) to the profile folder. But that doesn't have any effect. EDIT: rewritten, to make it as obvious as it can be. I wasn't expecting people to jump to the "this guy's a stupid git" quite so easily.

• Help setting up NSD daemon (DNS server)

  While searching for a secure dns server I came across the NSD project. I was really impressed by what seemed to me the best option out there that's open source. One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really not beginner friendly. I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. I need to have multiple sites on this CentOS server I've recently got my hands on. They also need to receive email. Details: I have a master host and would love to set this in the way described in the rows that follow: masterhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.masterhost.com addonhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.addonhost.com And so on. • Problems installing Linux to IDE connected compact flash card

  I have been trying to install Ubuntu on some hardware (Netcom NC-499 board that contains a Vortex86DX processor). I am trying to install to a compact flash card attached to the board via an IDE adaptor, the aim being that the board will boot up and simply treat the compact flash like a normal hard drive. The processor vendor claims support for Ubuntu 10.04 but I am having problems installing it onto the card. I have been trying using a USB CD-ROM drive and the standard .iso image from the ubuntu site (md5 checksum works out fine so no problem there) but I have had no success at all. I have been able to do this with Ubuntu 8.04 but with no other version (9.04 and 10.04 desktop and alternative discs all fail). My question is what other options are available to me to try and install this? I have googled myself apart trying to find out but other than a few sites describing USB based installs using flash memory sticks for very specific hardware, I have found no useful info at all. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

  I'm having trouble getting a subdomain working for an Apache Linux Install. Following is what I've configured: DNS: connect.goneglobal.com. CNAME 54.251.35.112 Apache httpd.conf: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/connect.goneglobal.com ServerName connect.goneglobal.com </VirtualHost> restart httpd - this ip is registered to this server - works for other sites on this apache. (first time I've tried a subdomain). Appears the issue is with DNS potentially and it doesn't seem to get to the site. Note: I have an index.php in the Documentroot. Note: there is an A record for goneglobal.com. which goes to a different hosting provider. thx

This far i've ran apt-get install nginx php5 php5-cgi and accessed the IP of the VPS with a browser which outputs It works, so it should be ready to run. Never having worked with nginx in the past, I have no idea on what to do next. How should I config my nginx install to run properly as a staging server in my LAN? Apparently, there's multiple configs for nginx including sites-default and nginx-default making me really confused.

However, one module I needed was not loaded.   In my bash scripts I have been using something like: until fping -u google.com; do echo "$0[$$] Network/DNS down?? $(date)" 1>&2 && sleep $(($RANDOM%(1 + ++trynum * 1) +1)).222; done to test for online connectivity. It halts in place, sleeping growing random intervals, until it can ping google.com again. Problem: At some sites ICMP pings are blocked altogether, and web pages are still reachable. What's a short way to test for this general case? Based on that test I will switch over to an http-based test like the exit status of curl -s google.com >/dev/null if that is a good one.

  Hi a friend of mine is asking about the request which can for example be found here: http://www.geoidee.ch/geodata/geoserver-2.0.0/logs/2010_11_23.request.log His original message: On a couple of hundred web sites worldwide, one of the 50 most popular "File not found" error 404 is caused by the following request: "GET http://66.196.81.202/error/vote HTTP/1.0" It originates from a user agent that purports to be an iPhone. The two requests that hit my servers appeared to originate near Frankfort, Germany. The IP address in the request is part of Yahoo although I doubt that Yahoo had any intentional part. fe1.buzz.vip.re1.yahoo.com The HTTP request has a host header 66.196.81.202 and a X-Forwarded-For of 96.6.99.16 and my IP address I expected to be able to do a Google search and find some kind of security bulletin on it, but I found nothing.   Hello, I am a programmer, trying to launch my first website.. through different helpful posts in sf and others, I setup an account with Linode and set up a slice (Debian, Apache, ..etc). I have a Drupal site under development, and like to have a test site in the Linode server as well. Now, I like to have a site setup with the following requirement. What is the best way to setup and protect the test site along with the actual (production) site?. Is virtual host is the answer? To protect the test site, is .htaccess authentication sufficient to prevent access from public and robots? I also modifying the theme, database contents etc, so having two sites under one drupal installation may not be good idea . what do u suggest? thanks in advance. bsreekanth.

• Linux Programs for pulling measurements from graphics

  As a front-end developer, I'm often given graphics of web sites and told pretty much, "Make it work." I've recently started working on Linux 100% of the time and was wondering if there's any programs out there that're good for "digesting" graphics. All I do, pretty much, is draw little selection boxes and takes notes on their dimensions; I also slice out a piece of the graphic (i.e. copy out just the part of the graphic I need for to make the same effect in CSS). Before now I've been very happy with Fireworks, but I need something for Linux, any suggestions? As a note, I mainly deal with pixel based graphics, so the program being vector based isn't a necessity.

  OpenCandy claims that using the /NOCANDY switch when using a OpenCandy-affiliated installer allows you to avoid opencandy. Should I take their word for it? If not, can anyone independent of OpenCandy and their affiliates verify that /NOCANDY works? Background: About to install WinSCP onto a fresh Windows installation, and found out that new versions have OpenCandy associated with their installer. For the sake of balance, here's a link to WinSCP's FAQ on OpenCandy. The claim about /NOCANDY working appears on WinSCP's web site, but the same boilerplate appears on other OpenCandy web sites. If the OpenCandy people are offended by the tag "spyare": sorry, but it's the main tag here, rather than "adware".

• Could not Upload file in network mapped drive using asp.net/vb.net

  I have tried several times to upload file remotely to a mapped network drive, but it is raising an exception: Could not find a part of the path 'X:\test\testing.wav'. I read through various internet /blog/ Microsoft help sites, but I still don't know what is wrong. Does anyone know what is causing this problem and how I can correct it? It works fine when I am uploading to a local drive as a test. It is also working When I am running the code from the development server, but if I try with published code, then it fails. :(

  I just updated the certificate on one of my sites due to the old one expiring. The new certificate verifies fine in Internet Explorer 9, Chrome, and Firefox 4 - but when trying to browse/check out the repository with TortoiseSVN, I get the following error: Error validating server certificate for https://xxx.xxx.com:443: Unknown certificate issuer.
