  I am consuming various XML-over-HTTP web services returning large XML files ( 2MB). What would be the fastest ruby http library to reduce the 'downloading' time? Required features: both GET and POST requests gzip/deflate downloads (Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip) - very important I am thinking between: open-uri Net::HTTP curb but you can also come with other suggestions. P.S. To parse the response, I am using a pull parser from Nokogiri, so I don't need an integrated solution like rest-client or hpricot.

• Provide a URI as a parameter for an ODBC or OleDB provider connection string?

  Is there any way of specifying a URI (rather than a physical path) as the "Data Source" parameter in an OleDB connection string, or the "Dbq" parameter in an ODBC connection string, such that the default ADO.Net providers will work with it? I've tried file://, and it's a no go, so I just wanted to confirm whether or not this is possible. I'm guessing not, but any confirmation or documentation links would be appreciated.

All documentation I have seen refers to .NET or Java solutions, I was in doubt whether PHP can be used as access is performed using SOAP.   Is anyone aware of a public wildcard domain name that resolves to IP address 127.0.0.1. For example if I wanted to test a URL locally such as mywebsite.localhost.com or example.localhost.com but I don't have control of DNS settings (hosts file or whatever) then I would use this public DNS to resolve to 127.0.0.1. It needs to be wildcarded so that no matter whatever comes before localhost.com it still resolves to 127.0.0.1.

• Simple database design and LINQ

  I have very little experience designing databases, and now I want to create a very simple database that does the same thing I have previously had in xml. Here's the xml: <services> <service type="writing"> <small>125</small> <medium>100</medium> <large>60</large> <xlarge>30</xlarge> </service> <service type="analysis"> <small>56</small> <medium>104</medium> <large>200</large> <xlarge>250</xlarge> </service> </services> Now, I wanted to create the same thing in a SQL database, and started doing this ( hope this formats ok, but you'll get the gist, four columns and two rows): > ServiceType Small Medium Large > > Writing 125 100 60 > > Analysis 56 104 200 This didn't work too well, since I then wanted to use LINQ to select, say, the Large value for Writing (60). But I couldn't use LINQ for this (as far as I know) and use a variable for the size (see parameters in the method below). I could only do that if I had a column like "Size" where Small, Medium, and Large would be the values. But that doesn't feel right either, because then I would get several rows with ServiceType = Writing (3 in this case, one for each size), and the same for Analysis. And if I were to add more servicetypes I would have to do the same. Simply repetitive... Is there any smart way to do this using relationships or something? Using the second design above (although not good), I could use the following LINQ to select a value with parameters sent to the method: protected int GetHourRateDB(string serviceType, Size size) { CalculatorLinqDataContext context = new CalculatorLinqDataContext(); var data = (from calculatorData in context.CalculatorDatas where calculatorData.Service == serviceType && calculatorData.Size == size.ToString() select calculatorData).Single(); return data.Hours; } But if there is another better design, could you please also describe how to do the same selection using LINQ with that design? For server side validations i m using ComponentModel.DataAnnotations. these validations are reflected to client side by html helper's method Html.EnableClientValidation(). this scheme works fine for except that it triggers the validation on blur event of each form control whereas i want to have it triggered on form's submit event. any suggestions in this regard are highly appreciated regards

• What's a good Lua IDE for linux?

  I'm looking for a lua IDE on linux. The majority of suggestions I've seen so far are windows only. I would have liked to use one of the Eclipse plugins for lua, but both of them -- LuaEclipse and LunarEclipse -- haven't been updated in nearly two years, and don't seem to work with Eclipse 3.5. If you have had any luck in getting lua working in Eclipse, I would be very interested.
