• Rails: periodically use HEAD to check for page changes

  I have a Rails app implementing a game, so it's expected that a player will leave a browser open at the game page. When player Alan takes an action himself, I use AJAX requests to update the game page Alan is viewing to reflect the new state. However, when another player (Bob) takes an action, I don't have (or want) a mechanism to push the change to Alan's view. I would like Alan's page to periodically poll the Rails server to find if there have been any changes since last reload, and to reload the page (either via a whole-page GET or an AJAX call) if not. In order to play nicely with caches and proxies, I'd like to do this by issuing a periodic HTTP HEAD request, get Rails to work out the timestamp of the last change (trivially available from my DB) and respond with that in the Last-Modified header; then have the client-side act on that timestamp. How can I go about doing this?

• Sync Framework,LINQ, and my DAL

  I am creating a WPF app that needs to allow users to work in a temporary disconnected state and I plan to use a Local Database Cache. My question's are about my data access layer. Do you typically create the whole DAL to point at the Cache or both and create a switching mechanism? Is Entity's a good way to go for my DAL against the Cache? I am used to L2S but my understanding is that I can't use that against SQLCE, correct? Thanks! PS: Any good resources out there for using Sync, Linq, and WPF ALL TOGETHER? Tutorials, videos, etc?

• Tortoise SVN tree conflict with myself

  Has anyone had the experience of moving a file in tortoise and committing successfully, only to later commit a different change and be told of a tree conflict where: the file in its original location has been deleted, but in tortoise is marked as missing the file in its new location is there, but marked as already added. (I use tortoise SVN, and we have client and server 1.60) Nobody else changed either the directory or the file (according to svn log). Why is this happening? Is there a way to avoid it happening? If it does happen, is there a more elegant way of fixing the problem than by deleting the whole folder and updating again?

• Facebook Iframe App with multiple pages in Safari

  I have a facebook Iframe application with multiple PHP pages in it. I have some links that point relatively to the files inside my "iframe folder". This works just fine In FFox, IE and Chrome. The problem here is that in Safari the links are not working at all. What happens when you click on a link is that the whole page (parent AND iframe) gets loaded inside the iframe. Anyone has any Idea why this could be happening? Thanks in advance!

• is it possible to issue dynamic include in asp-classic?

  I mean, like php'h include... something like my_file_to_be_included = "include_me.asp" -- for what I've seen so far, there are a couple of alternatives, but every one of them has some sort of shortcoming... what I'm trying to figure out is how to make a flexible template system... without having to statically include the whole thing in a single file with a loooooong case statement... here there are a couple of links a solution using FileSysmemObject, just lets you include static pages idem yet another one same thing from adobe this approach uses Server.Execute but it has some shortcomings I'd like to avoid... seems like (haven't tried yet) Server.Execute code runs in another context, so you can't use it to load a functions your are planning to use in the caller code... nasty... same thing I think this one is the same this looks promising!!! I'm not sure about it (couldn't test it yet) but it seems like this one dinamycally handles the page to a SSDI component... any idea???

  I was just curious about some exact implementation details of lists in Haskell (GHC-specific answers are fine)--are they naive linked lists, or do they have any special optimizations? More specifically: Do length and (!!) (for instance) have to iterate through the list? If so, are their values cached in any way (i.e., if I call length twice, will it have to iterate both times)? Does access to the back of the list involve iterating through the whole list? Are infinite lists and list comprehensions memoized? (i.e., for fib = 1:1:zipWith (+) fib (tail fib), will each value be computed recursively, or will it rely on the previous computed value?) Any other interesting implementation details would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  Can you help me understand Linux HA? Pacemaker, Heartbeat, Corosync seem to be part of a whole HA stack, but how do they fit together? How does wackamole differ from Pacemaker/Heartbeat/Corosync? I've seen opinions that wackamole is better than Heartbeat because it's peer-based. Is that valid? The last release of wackamole was 2.5 years ago. Is it still being maintained or active? What would you recommend for HA setup for web/application/database servers?

• How to disable scrolling the document body?

  I have a HTML which has lot of content and a vertical scrollbar appears as soon as the HTML is loaded. Now from this HTML a full screen IFRAME is loaded. The problem is when the IFRAME is loaded, the parent scrollbar still persists, I want to disable the scrollbar when the Iframe is loaded. I tried: document.body.scroll = "no", it did not work with FF and chrome. document.style.overflow = "hidden"; after this I was still able to scroll, and the whole iframe would scroll up revealing the parent HTML. My requirement is, when the IFRAME is loaded, we should never be able to scroll the entire IFRAME if the parent HTML has a scrollbar. Any ideas?

• Showing HTML comment strings (<!-- -->) in HTML files

  Hello all. I'm building a source code search engine, and I'm returning the results on a HTML page (aspx to be exact, but the view logic is in HTML). When someone searches a string, I also return the whole line of code where this string can be found in a file. However, some lines of code come from HTML/aspx files and these lines contain HTML specific comments (). When I try to print this line on the HTML page, it interprets it as a comment and does not show it on the screen....how should I go about solving this so that it actually shows up?   Here, I am a bit confused with forms in Django. I have information for the form(a poll i.e the poll question and options) coming from some db_table - table1 or say class1 in models. Now the vote from this poll is to be captured which is another model say class2. So, I am just getting confused with the whole flow of forms, here i think.   I've heard that DotNetNuke takes a bit of a hit for Search Engine Optimization. I'm not criticizing the platform, by the way; I love DNN. This is just what I've heard. As I understand it, the impact is from repetitive content, table-based layouts, and lots of extra markup. I've got a friend who would like to start an e-commerce site using DNN and some modules from Snowcovered. I was just wondering whether DNN would be a good platform to choose. The idea is attractive because of the ease with which a DNN commerce system can be deployed. Search-engine friendly URLs aren't the problem - the modules do that, it's whether DNN as a whole would be a good platform for this. Thanks very much for any help or advice.

  I have data in the form { {x,y,z,f}...} I am using ListContourPlot3D but all I get is an empty box with dimensions -1,1 in each direction. Here is my code: ListContourPlot3D[data5, PlotRange - All, AxesLabel - {"[Beta]", "[Omega]", "Vo"}, Contours - {1500}]. These are the first 5 points of my data:( the whole set has 55 points) {{200, 20000 10^(1/3), 2000, 1226}, {200, 20000 10^(1/3), 2600, 1422}, {200, 20000 10^(1/3), 3200, 1581}, {200, 20000 10^(1/3), 3800, 1761}, {200, 20000 10^(1/3), 4400, 1872}} Dimensions[data5] returns {55,4} If I do IntegerPart[data5] it does it correctly so it must recognize the numbers in my data.   I'm working on a script, and a small part of that involves taking a canvas and converting it to a downloadable image. To do this, I do: var thumb_jpeg = thumbnail.toDataURL("image/jpeg"); $("#" + options.dest).attr('src',thumb_jpeg); ...where thumbnail is a canvas tag and options.dest is the name of an img id. This code works perfectly in Chrome, but when I try it in Firefox, Firebug throws up this error: Security error" code: "1000 var thumb_jpeg = thumbnail.toDataURL("image/jpeg"); I would link to the whole script, but everything is hosted on my computer.   Ive got a MS Chart control and it works just fine except that I can't figure out how to "format" the Y-Axis. I am adding a lot of double numbers into a Serie but when the double numb are actually whole numbers (20.000000.....) the Y-Axis on my chart shows 20. example: this serie : 12.32 11.00 10.13 would actually show up like this: 12.32 11 10.13 I have tried formatting the data as I insert it into the serie like this: serie.Points.AddXY(date.ToString(),double[i].ToString("##.##")); but that doesn't seem to work. I've tried to search for a place to format it in Chart.Series[0].* and Chart.ChartAreas[0].* but I didn't find it there.

  I'm searching for an algorithm for Digit summing. Let me outline the basic principle: Say you have a number: 18268. 1 + 8 + 2 + 6 + 8 = 25 2 + 5 = 7 And 7 is our final number. It's basically adding each number of the whole number until we get down to a single (also known as a 'core') digit. It's often used by numerologists. I'm searching for an algorithm (doesn't have to be language in-specific) for this. I have searched Google for the last hour with terms such as digit sum algorithm and whatnot but got no suitable results. Any help would be great, thanks.

  I'm trying to write a a regex to validate a string to match the following rules. Must start with a-z (case insensitive) Must only contain a-z A-Z 0-9 . - I've put something together based on my limited knowledge and ran it through an online testing tool for a whole bunch of situations and the results were as I had hoped however when I place the pattern into my .NET code it doesn't match correctly. The pattern I am using is, [a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9.\-]* Is this the correct pattern or am I barking up the wrong tree?   Hello, i would by thankful for an official link (and section) of the specification for CSS, that explains if: .one two h1 {color:green;font-family:arial;} /*case 1 */ .one two h1 {color:blue;} /*case 2*/ will result in (when evaluated by the browser) .one two h1 {color:blue;font-family:arial;} /*case 3*/ or will it be: .one two h1 {color:blue;} /*case 4*/ ==I have read a lot about inheritance, specifity, cascading etc but I still have not found for the given example which rules apply here. In regard to specifity both elements are equal in specifity the case2 will be the most specify one (as it is equal specific but the last one). But does specifity always apply to the whole selector with ALL properties defined. Or only the the properties that are are in "competition" (and declared in both). thanks!!!!

• Python if statement efficiency

  A friend (fellow low skill level recreational python scripter) asked me to look over some code. I noticed that he had 7 separate statements that basically said. if ( a and b and c): do something the statements a,b,c all tested their equality or lack of to set values. As I looked at it I found that because of the nature of the tests, I could re-write the whole logic block into 2 branches that never went more than 3 deep and rarely got past the first level (making the most rare occurrence test out first). if a: if b: if c: else: if c: else: if b: if c: else: if c: To me, logically it seems like it should be faster if you are making less, simpler tests that fail faster and move on. My real questions are 1) When I say if and else, should the if be true, does the else get completely ignored? 2) In theory would if (a and b and c) take as much time as the three separate if statements would?

  Im trying to get all of my posts in a delicious account to an MySql DB. Since delicious exports xml I think it wont be too complicated, but being new to it I cant really make sense of the api... I believe I have to query it as so: https://api.del.icio.us/v1/posts/all? But one catch is that im using an yahoo id for that account which I need to do it as follows: "To access data from accounts created using a Yahoo! ID, use the same API's as below, but change the path to /v2, and make HTTP requests using OAuth as provided by the Yahoo! Developer Network." I cant understand how to do it, can someone please help. Thanks. EDIT Although I still have the same doubt I figured out I can export the whole thing from the settings in my account, now I just need to get the html export in a xml file :) Also the yahoo method for accessing data, really is no good.

  I can't seem to get inline Javascript indenting properly in Vim. Argh! }); Vim seems to insist on automatically indenting the closing brace shown in the second case there. It does the same if I re-indent the whole file. How do I get it to automatically indent using the more standard JS indenting style seen in the first case?

• multiplayer / visitors interactions with Ruby on Rails?

  I want to have interactions between visitors on my site. Imagine a chat room. It basically involves getting the data from everyone and sending it to everyone, this can be done by ajax and what not but I wonder if there is something already there in the wild that would do the heavy lifting for me. I have to say that I got very lost once I start programming Ajax, dont even know how to make tests for it... I have found the Q42multiplayer library that looks like what I want but they use C# as backend. There is something similar or any other multiplayer thingy I can get some idea or rip some code from (the whole thing will be opensource) for Ruby on Rails?
