• Rails Nested Attributes, Relationship for Shared or Common Object

  This has to be a common problem, so I'm surprised that Google didn't turn up more answers. I'm working on a rails app that has several different kinds of entities, those entities by need a relation to a different entity. For example: Address: a Model that stores the details of a street address (this is my shared entity) PersonContact: a Model that includes things like home phone, cell phone and email address. This model needs to have an address associated with it DogContact: Obviously, if you want to contact a dog, you have to go to where it lives. So, PersonContact and DogContact should have foreign keys to Address. Even, though they are really the "owning" object of Address. This would be fine, except that accepts_nested_attributes_for is counting on the foreign key being in Address to work correctly. What's the correct strategy to keep the foreign key in Address, but have PersonContact and DogContact be the owning objects?

• Programatically get own Phone Number in iPhone OS 4.0

  I am developing an iPhone application for jail broken phones and in this application I would like to fetch user's phone number. I have gone through the entire stackoverflow.com and found some relevant answers but all of them are obsolete and doesn't work with iOS 4.0 anymore. The most famous solution for this problem is NSString *num = [[NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults] stringForKey:@"SBFormattedPhoneNumber"]; but as I mentioned this solution no more works with iOS 4.0 As my application is intended towards the jail broken phones and not intended the Apple app store so I am not worried about my app rejection, hence any private API will also work for me. Also please let me know if we can fetch IMSI number from SIM using any private APIs of iPhone

• How web apps ask location of mobile device?

  Hello, Many modern mobile phones (google nexus one etc.) have some kind of built in location service. when i go to a some website (eg. google.com) that website asks if I'm willing to share my location with that site. How do you actually ask for mobile device to give out it's location to the site? And in what format is that location given? I've got no clue and didn't find any answers from google, neither.

• Insriting into a bitstream

  I'm looking for a way to efficiently insert bits into a bitstream and have it 'overflow', padding with 0's. So for example if you had a byte array with 2 bytes: 231 and 109 (11100111 01101101), and did BitInsert(byteArray,4,00) it would insert two bits at bit offset 4 making 11100001 11011011 01000000 (225,219,24). It would be ok even the method only allowed 1 bit insertions e.g. BitInsert(byteArray,4,true) or BitInsert(byteArray,4,false). I have one method of doing it, but it has to walk the stream with a bitmask bit by bit, so I'm wondering if there's a simpler approach... Answers in assembly or a C derivative would be appreciated.

As some needed plugins are generated using GMF and EMF, the build workflow must be something like this: SVN Check-out Invoke Generation Run Tests Build all Publish update-site Over the last couple of weeks, i played around with PDE Headless Build and Buckminster. Anyhow i still got problems with both and can't decide on which i should spent my effort. So what would you prefer? What experience you made? • Why are symbols not frozen strings?

  I understand the theoretical difference between Strings and Symbols. I understand that Symbols are meant to represent a concept or a name or an identifier or a label or a key, and Strings are a bag of characters. I understand that Strings are mutable and transient, where Symbols are immutable and permanent. I even like how Symbols look different from Strings in my text editor. What bothers me is that practically speaking, Symbols are so similar to Strings that the fact that they're not implemented as Strings causes a lot of headaches. They don't even support duck-typing or implicit coercion, unlike the other famous "the same but different" couple, Float and Fixnum. The mere existence of HashWithIndifferentAccess, and its rampant use in Rails and other frameworks, demonstrates that there's a problem here, an itch that needs to be scratched. Can anyone tell me a practical reason why Symbols should not be frozen Strings? Other than "because that's how it's always been done" (historical) or "because symbols are not strings" (begging the question). • How to code a 'Next in Results' within search results in PHP

  Right, bit of a head scratcher, although I've got a feeling there's an obvious answer and I'm just not seeing the wood for the trees. Baiscally, using Solr as a search engine for my site, bringing back 15 results per page. When you click on a result, you get a detail page, that has a "Next in Results" link on it, which obviously forwards you on to the next result. Whats the best way of doing this? I've come up with a few solutions but they're either too inpractical or just don't work. I could store all the ids in a session array, then grab the one after the current one and put that in the link. But with possibly hundreds/thousands of results, the memory that array would need, and the performance hit of dealing with it isn't practical. I could take the same approach and put it into the db, but I'll still have to deal with a potentially huge array when I grab them out of the db. Or; I could do the search again, only returning the id's, and grab the one after the one we're currently looking at. I think this could be the best option? Although it does seem kind of messy, namely because of when I have to select the id thats on a different 'page' (ie the 16th, 31st etc result). Unless I pass through where it was in the results, and select from there, but that still doesn't seem like the right way to do it. I'm really sorry if this is just complete nonsense, any help is massively appreciated as always, Cheers guys!

My naive beginner's approach would be something like this: From my smartphone app, use a framework encoding my data object into a json object Send this object via http to a listener addressed by a dedicated URL On the server side, use a JSON parser and store it via ORM etc. into a database Questions: Is this too naive? 2a. If yes: What is the appropiate way to tackle this workflow? 2b. If no: What frameworks to use in JAVA for serializing/deserializing to/from JSON objects? Any example for a json listener in the web? • How to remove all of the html whitespace/newlines of a NSString

  i've got a problem and i hope someone can solve it. I parsed some html to a nsstring and im trying to trim all of the characters and keep some specific words. • Does style="color: #FFF;" render as #F0F0F0 or #FFFFFF?

  When defining colors using "shorthand hexidecimal" (style="color: #FFF;"), is there a defined method for expanding the shorthand? (style="color: #F0F0F0;" or style="color: #FFFFFF;") Do all browsers use the same expansion method? Is this behavior by specification (if so, where is it defined)? Does the expansion method perhaps vary between CSS 1/2/3? I've observed that "most browsers" expand to #FFFFFF. Are there any other places where this shorthand notation is allowed, but the expansion method is different? I've always avoided using shorthand hex, because I've never known the answers to these questions...

• Screen scraping an application window and interacting with the mouse and keyboard

  The other day I found myself addicted to a flash game and frustrated by the thing at the same time. In a moment of frustration with the game I thought I would make a 'bot' to beat it for me. Well, I really wouldn't, but it made me realize: I don't know how to interact with another application in a way to do this. Which brings me to the question, how would one take screenshots of another running application and interact with it with the keyboard and mouse. Ideally the solution would be in a managed language like c#. When doing the background reading the net was drowning with articles on scrapping HTML. There were not many articles on actually screen scrapping an application. Diverse answers are appreciated as I’m really looking at surveying what’s out there.

• Looking for a good explanation of the table generation macro idiom

  I want to make this clear up front : I know how this trick works, what I want is a link to a clear explanation to share with others. One of the answers to a C macro question talks about the "X macro" or "not yet defined macro" idiom. This involves defining something like: #define MAGIC_LIST \ X(name_1, default_1) \ X(name_2, default_2) \ ... Then to create, say, an array of values with named indices you do: typedef enum { #define X(name, val) name, MAGIC_LIST #undef X } NamedDefaults; You can repeat the procedure with a different #define for X() to create an array of values, and maybe debugging strings, etc. I'd like a link to a clear explanation of how this works, pitched at someone who is passably familiar with C. I have no idea what everyone usually calls this pattern, though, so my attempts to search the web for it have failed thus far. (If there is such an explanation on SO, that'd be fine...)

• Do you put a super() call a the beginning of your constructors?

  This is a question about coding style and recommended practices: As explained in the answers to the question unnecessary to put super() in constructor?, if you write a constructor for a class that is supposed to use the default (no-arg) constructor from the superclass, you may call super() at the beginning of your constructor: public MyClass(int parm){ super(); // leaving this out makes no difference // do stuff... } but you can also omit the call; the compiler will in both cases act as if the super() call were there. So then, do you put the call into your constructors or not? On the one hand, one might argue that including the super() makes things more explicit. OTOH, I always dislike writing redundant code, so personally I tend to leave it out; I do however regularly see it in code from others. What are your experiences? Did you have problems with one or the other approach? Do you have coding guidelines which prescribe one approach?

• .NET & ASP vs PHP

  Earlier today I asked wether it would be a good idea to develop websites using C#. Most of the answers pointed towards .NET and ASP. Currently I develop with PHP. I've dabbled with Python and RoR but I always come back to PHP. This is the first time I've looked at .NET and ASP. A bucket load of Google searches later I'm not really seeing much support for ASP online but then it all seems a bit Biased towards PHP/Apache/MySQL. It looks like there's a fair amount of .NET and ASP folk around here so I figured it's worth a shot asking for their input in attempt to try and address the balance in my own head. It can't all be bad. What advantages are there to .NET and ASP over PHP?

• prevent hover set by the CSS

  I try to prevent the Browser from using the :hover effect of the CSS. $("ul#mainFilter a").hover( function(o){ o.preventDefault(); ...do my stuff... }, function(o){ o.preventDefault(); ...do my stuff... }); I tired it with return false; to but it does not work. Does anyone know how to do this? due the answers i give you some more nfo: I have set the a and a:hover styles, in my CSS already. Now if JS is available on the clients machine, i want to overwrite the effect with a smoother one. (using jQuery color plugin) As mentioned by fudgey, a work around would be to set the style (using .css()) but i would have to overwrite every single effect specified in the CSS (see here: http://jsfiddle.net/raPeX/1/ ). I am looking for a generic solution.

  Is there any mechanism to comment out large blocks of Python code? Right now the only ways I can see of commenting out code are to either start every line with a #, or to enclose the code in """ (triple quotes), except that actually makes it show up in various doc tools. Edit--After reading the answers (and referring to the "duplicate"), I have concluded the correct answer is "No". One person said so, and the rest lectured us about editors. Not a bad thing, but I feel it's important to put the answer at the top.

• Why have or haven't you moved to ASP.NET MVC yet?

  I find myself on the edge of trying out ASP.NET MVC but there is still "something" holding me back. Are you still waiting to try it, and if so, why? If you finally decided to use it, what helped you get over your hesitation? I'm not worried about it from a technical point of view; I know the pros and cons of web forms vs MVC. My concerns are more on the practical side. Will Microsoft continue to support ASP.NET MVC if they don't reach some critical threshold of developers/customers using it? Are customers willing to try ASP.NET MVC? Have you had to convince a customer to use it? How did that go? Are there major sites using ASP.NET MVC (besides SO)? Could you provide links if you have them? Did you try ASP.NET MVC and found yourself regretting it? If so, what do you regret? If you have any other concerns preventing you from using MVC.NET, what are they? If you had concerns but felt they were addressed and now use MVC.NET, could you list them as well? Thanks

  I am developing a Excel automation app that read and write to Excel spreadsheet. I have Office 2007 installed on my machine. I therefore can reference the Excel 12.0 Object Library and the Excel 5.0 Object Library. I don't want to use Excel 5.0 because it's really quite old and poorly documented. Therefore I'm referencing Excel 12.0. However the target machine have Office 2003 installed and therefore only have Excel 11.0. So when I compile my program it crashes on the target machine since the referenced library are different. I was wondering is there a way I could obtain the Excel 11.0 without installing Office 03? I tried to find answers from msdn and microsoft support page but couldn't find anything? This is quite strange since it could also happen in the future where developers has newer editions of Office than clients?

• FCKEditor breaking HTML forms

  I'm in the process of reproducing some standalone HTML forms as pages in a CMS that uses FCKEditor by simply copying and pasting the relevant code into the editor. But when I save and view the page, the HTML has been changed and the tag has been moved up to just below the open tag -- and not at the bottom of the form. This obviously renders all of the fields in the form, including the submit button, useless. Is there a way to tell FCKEditor that I know what I'm doing and I don't need it to validate the HTML output? Unfortunately this is a hosted CMS service (actually part of an email blast tool) so making changes to the configuration will mean I need to go through the company's support system, which is fine -- but they haven't been able to solve it for me yet, so I'm hoping to get the answers for them. Parallel programming is quite new to me and I am not sure if I get how to do it right. The rest of the app is: Memcpy input array to a 2d texture inputTex stored in a CUDA array. Output is memcpy-ed from global memory to host and then dealt with. As you can see a thread deals with a single pixel. I am unsure if that is the fastest way as some sources suggest doing a row or more per thread. If I understand correctly NVidia themselves say that the more threads, the better. I would love advice on this on someone with practical experience.

• Changing the color of a Rebol button

  I want to ask multiple choice questions in Rebol. Possible answers will be on buttons. I want to turn a button red when it is clicked and it is the wrong answer. When the correct button is pressed, I want to proceed to the next question. I can change the color of a box (mybox/color: red show mybox). I can set up a toggle with two colors (but I can't change it based on the result of an arbitrary test (is the answer correct?). It seems like there is probably a simple way to change the color of a button, without having to create my own button-like face objects. Isn't there?

• Improve Log Exceptions

  I am planning to use log4net in a new web project. In my experience, I see how big the log table can get, also I notice that errors or exceptions are repeated. For instance, I just query a log table that have more than 132.000 records, and I using distinct and found that only 2.500 records are unique (~2%), the others (~98%) are just duplicates. so, I came up with this idea to improve logging. Having a couple of new columns: counter and updated_dt, that are updated every time try to insert same record. If want to track the user that cause the exception, need to create a user_log or log_user table, to map N-N relationship. Create this model may made the system slow and inefficient trying to compare all these long text... Here the trick, we should also has a hash column of binary of 16 or 32, that hash the message and the exception, and configure an index on it. We can use HASHBYTES to help us. I am not an expert in DB, but I think that will made the faster way to locate a similar record. And because hashing doesn't guarantee uniqueness, will help to locale those similar record much faster and later compare by message or exception directly to make sure that are unique. This is a theoretical/practical solution, but will it work or bring more complexity? what aspects I am leaving out or what other considerations need to have? the trigger will do the job of insert or update, but is the trigger the best way to do it?
