• Where can I learn more about datastructure tricky questions?

  I am relatively new to programming (around 1 year programming C#-winforms). Also, I come from a non CS background (no formal degree) Recently, while being interviewed for a job, I was asked about implementing a queue using a stack. I fumbled and wan't able to answer the question. After, the interview I could do it(had to spend some time). I have learnt (and think that I know it well) basic algorithms in datastructures using the book Data Structures: A Pseudocode Approach with C - Richard F. Gilberg (Author) . I want to know about sites/ books which have such questions along with answers. I think this will allow me to develop my CS specific problem solving skills. Any help is appreciated. • Improve Log Exceptions

  I am planning to use log4net in a new web project. In my experience, I see how big the log table can get, also I notice that errors or exceptions are repeated. For instance, I just query a log table that have more than 132.000 records, and I using distinct and found that only 2.500 records are unique (~2%), the others (~98%) are just duplicates. so, I came up with this idea to improve logging. Having a couple of new columns: counter and updated_dt, that are updated every time try to insert same record. If want to track the user that cause the exception, need to create a user_log or log_user table, to map N-N relationship. Create this model may made the system slow and inefficient trying to compare all these long text... Here the trick, we should also has a hash column of binary of 16 or 32, that hash the message and the exception, and configure an index on it. We can use HASHBYTES to help us. I am not an expert in DB, but I think that will made the faster way to locate a similar record. And because hashing doesn't guarantee uniqueness, will help to locale those similar record much faster and later compare by message or exception directly to make sure that are unique. This is a theoretical/practical solution, but will it work or bring more complexity? what aspects I am leaving out or what other considerations need to have? the trigger will do the job of insert or update, but is the trigger the best way to do it?

• Learning Python coming from PHP

  Community wiki so don't vote to close, kthxbai. My dynamic language experience is solely PHP. I want to learn Python now to broaden my career opportunities and just because I like programming. :) When learning Java, I used a site (lost the URL/real name now), something like "Java for PHP developers" that had all on one side of the page the PHP code, and on the other side the Java code to do the same thing. Is there a website like that for Python? Any other recommendations/advice? Thanks Edit: I have no votes left today, but I'll up-vote good answers tomorrow :)

• Best method to cleanly shut down an application launched via another.

  I couldn't find any close answers to this, so I'm consulting the experience of SO users: Scenario: I have two small C# winforms applications where one behaves as a server or host, the other as a client. They share data via SQL Server, in terms of configuration settings. I am currently launching the client application (which only needs to run periodically) from the server application via Process.Start() and terminating it via Process.CloseMainWindow() (after finding it in the process list). While it seems clean enough, I wondered if there's a better way. Question: Which way would be best to instruct the client application to shut down: Continue using Process.CloseMainWindow()? Implement WCF between the applications? (I would need help on how to do this.) Set a variable in SQL that the client application checks for? Some other way?

• How to do GUI for bash scripts?

  I want to do some graphic dialogs for my script but don't know how. I hear something about GTK-Server or something like that. If someone know how to link bash with tcl/tk I also be satisfied. Please do not post something like "change to C++" because my project must be a script in BASH, there are no other option. Any ideas? P.S. Sorry for bad english! EDIT: Thanks for answers but I don't want "graphics" like colors in console, but windows that shows like hmmmm..... net browser which I can move, minimalize etc. I will test xmessage, but I don't think that will be that what I searching for. EDIT2: And one more thing. I don't want make a simple dialog like yes/no, but some interface like progress bars and buttons, something like game :)

• PPTP VPN connection always connects successfully in Mac OS X/windows but drops after 2 minute in iPad or it doesn't connect al all!

  Dear Users, I've a big problem with using iPad's VPN connection. When I use the same VPN connection (PPTP) configuration parameters in my Mac OS X Snow Leopard or my windows XP (Bootcamp), it works flawlessly but when I define the same connection in my iPad, connection drops in about 1 or 2 minutes (some times) and most of the time, it Doesn't Connect at all. I'm using iPad 3G with iOS 4.2.1 and my iPad is not jail-broken. I've tried so hard to make it work in an stable manner but not found any solution yet. (I should have put encryption level to No-Encryption in Mac and Windows otherwise it won't connect in my desktop operating systems. It is a host-related issue and I'm binding to that). I'm sure there is no technical problem in my iPad's hardware and this problem also exists in my friend's iPad too. Our devices work perfectly with 3G and Wifi connections. Your answers are really appreciated.

• (Pathinfo vs fnmatch part 2) Speed benchmark reversed on Windows and Mac

  On a previous question the pathinfo and fnmatch functions were benchmarked and the answers all came out opposite to my benchmark results. You can read the different results with the benchmark code here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2693428/pathinfo-vs-fnmatch I couldn't work it out until I ran the same code on a machine running vista. The results then matched the other users. My main machine is a mac. So, my questions are: Why do we get these two different results? Could this apply to other functions?

• Posting to tumblr in PHP

  I am trying to make a test post to my tumblr blog with a php script (that will eventually be ran as a cron job) I have been browsing google and read many answers on here and the closest I found is explained in this post: Tumblr OAuth using PHP's OAuth class I am using the code in his tutorial here: http://vigrond.com/blog/2012/02/04/oauth-extension-php-and-the-tumblr-api/ Pretty much as is, replacing the blogurl with mine and of course the consumer and secret key. When I run the .php script via my browser however, nothing happens. Any ideas? EDIT: The only error I found in cPanel's error log is this: [Wed Oct 31 00:29:25 2012] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx ] PHP Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /path on line 14 But I fixed this and the error does not appear anymore.

• Best solution for language documentation.

  I'm developing a new object oriented scripting language and the project itself is quite ready for audience now, so i'm starting to think about a serious (not as "drafty" as it is right now) way of document its grammar, functions from standard library and standard library classes. I've looked a bit around and almost every language hash its own web application for the documentation, Python uses Sphinx for instance. Which is the best PHP (don't have the time/will to install mod_who_knows_what on my server) application to accomplish this? I've used mediawiki a bit but i found its tag system a little bit hard to use in this context. Thanks for your answers.

• SQL-Server: Is there an equivalent of a trigger for general stored procedure execution

  Hi All, Hope you can help. Is there a way to reliably detect when a stored proc is being run on SQL Server without altering the SP itself? Here's the requirement. We need to track users running reports from our enterprise data warehouse as the core product we use doesn't allow for this. Both core product reports and a slew of in-house ones we've added all return their data from individual stored procs. We don't have a practical way of altering the parts of the product webpages where reports are called from. We also can't change the stored procs for the core product reports. (It would be trivial to add a logging line to the start/end of each of our inhouse ones). What I'm trying to find therefore, is whether there's a way in SQL Server (2005 / 2008) to execute a logging stored proc whenever any other stored procedure runs, without altering those stored procedures themselves. We have general control over the SQL Server instance itself as it's local, we just don't want to change the product stored procs themselves. Any one have any ideas? Is there a kind of "stored proc executing trigger"? Is there an event model for SQL Server that we can hook custom .Net code into? (Just to discount it from the start, we want to try and make a change to SQL Server rather than get into capturing the report being run from the products webpages etc) Thoughts appreciated Thanks

• Backing up locally modified and new source files

  I'm wondering how other programmers are backing up changes that are not under source control yet, be it new files or modified ones. I'm mostly referring to medium size jobs - hardly worth the effort of making a private branch, but taking more than a day to complete. This is not a vendor-specific question - I'd like to see if various products have different solutions to the problem. I'd appreciate answers referring to SVN and distributed SCCs, though. I'm mostly wondering about that latters (Mercurial, GIT etc.) - it's great that you have your own local repo, but do you back it up on a regular basis along with your source files? Note - I'm not asking about a general backup strategy. For that, we have IT. I'm seeking the best way to keep locally modified stuff backed-up before they are checked back into the main repo.

• .NET framework 4 total application deployment size

  After watching in horror as the .NET framework 3.5 SP1 bloated to whopping 231 MB I was amazed to see that .NET Framework 4 Full (x86) is only 35 MB and client profile just 29 MB. My question is if .NET Framework 4 is in any way dependent on previous versions of the framework being installed on the client machine or if my users will have to download only 29 (or 35) MB if I develop a Winforms or WPF desktop application in VS 2010 targeting .NET Framework version 4.0? Edit: Wikipedia concurs with the answers: Some developers have expressed concerns about the large size of .NET framework runtime installers for end-users. The size is around 54 MB for .NET 3.0, 197 MB for .NET 3.5, and 250 MB for .NET 3.5 SP1 (while using web installer the typical download for Windows XP is around 50 MB, for Windows Vista - 20 MB). The size issue is partially solved with .NET 4 installer (x86 + x64) being 54 MB and not embedding full runtime installation packages for previous versions.

• Writing an audio player in C#

  Hi, I have a pretty cool idea for a very special media player. I like to think about this project as a mini-startup, since I don't yet know if my idea is practical. Anyways, before implementing my idea, I first need to be able to implement a simple audio player. My preferred language for this project is C#, simply because it's so easy to use, but any other object oriented language would be fine too I guess. I started out with no knowledge whatsoever about audio. My main goals right now are: Being able to play audio files - as many formats as possible (sort of a VLC type player, but only audio for now). Being able to analyze audio files - as in, reading frequency, amplitude, volume, and other information about the audio. I think maybe a good idea here is to be able to analyze one file format (PCM?), and then temporarily converting any file I want to analyze to that format. This is in order to later implement a mechanism that compares songs and identifies similar songs to recommend to the user (this feature isn't part of my idea, but I figured since it exists in many players nowadays, I need to have it too if I want be able to compete with them). BTW - I currently don't have any knowledge about audio/wavelengths/frequencies and such, so I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction about this analyzation feature. Maybe in the future I'd expand to playing video files as well, but for now I'm concentrating on audio. After searching the Internet for a while, I've come across LAME. Problem is, it's not C#, and I'm not sure how to use it. I know there is something called "Interoperability", that is supposed to let me work with native DLL files through C#. • Loading dictionary for input method suggestion list

  Hi, For various reasons, i'm trying to write my own input keyboard. So far all is going well except that of creating the suggestions. I've found the latinIME algorithm, which is all good. However i'm having major difficulty working out how to load the dictionary in the first place. I've had a good look round the net, and found various suggestions, but no definitive answers, and i cant seem to get any of them to work. • Android: stack management for views in a tab?

  I see some answers here prefer views over activities as contents of tabs. Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that by switching out views, it's possible to keep the navigation flow inside a tab (more user friendly, I think). But I wonder how to manage the view stack then in case of the back button events. Also this could cause one giant Activity with large amount of views, which might not be good.   I've read all the answers on stackoverflow for similar questions but no one really laid down an explanation: why is zend/symfony/kohana/cakePHP the best for jQuery? what is the difference? I'm writing a snazzy ultra-cool web 2.0 app with google maps and facebook connect integration plus a bunch of other APIs. Almost everything will be AJAX vis JSON. For me PHP is a burden, an unnecessary evil. I need database control, almost always via JSON. I need user authentication. This is all. Nothing fancy. And I need it to scale. Most of all I need it to work effortlessly with jQuery, I need it to be jQuery's BFF, and I need to know why it is so.   I've seen answers to both halves of my question, but I can't work out how to marry the two. I have a book model, and a translatedBook model. But how do I get a list of distinct languages in their long format? I've tried: lang_avail = TargetText.objects.values('language').distinct().order_by('language') lang_avail = TargetText.objects.distinct().order_by('language').values('language'). lang_avail = TargetText.objects.all().distinct('language').order_by('language') but I can't seem to get what I want - which is a list like: "English, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish" The final lang_avail listed above didn't return the list of 5, it returned the list of 355 (ie, # of books) with multiple repeats....
