  • Route global shortcuts to pages opened in Firefox

    I like listening to music online on sites like stereomood.com. There is a major problem, however. I can not control the player with my keyboard. And even with a mouse - when I want to play/pause I must activate firefox window, select the tab where music plays and hit play/pause button manually - this is a pain, especially when you play a fullscreen game that can not minimize itself. Thus said, global keyboard shortcuts would be a perfect solution. I understand that different online media players have different controls and each site must be configured individually (like, select button with id 'play' and press it), but I believe that can be done in principle. I also guess that such tricks are impossible without some third-party native app which captures shortcuts and routes them to Firefox window. So, any solutions? Maybe some AutoHotkey hacks or similar.

    I've got an Ubuntu server that boots up in text mode. It rarely has a screen or keyboard attached to it, but when I do attach a screen, I usually have to attach a keyboard too, because the darn console mode screen saver will be on and I'll need to hit a key to see what's going on. I'm aware that the setterm command can disable this, but it's a per-session thing. How can I make it so the machine never ever blanks the screen in text mode, even when it's first booted up and sitting at the login prompt?

  • emacs starting maximised

    I want a keyboard shortcut to open emacs in a maximised window. I tried emacs --fullscreen, but that is full screen rather than maximised window... That is, the emacs window covers ubuntu menu bars. emacs -fw gets a full width window and emacs -fh gets a full height window, but if you put both options, it only reads the second one. At the moment, I just have another keyboard shortcut for maximising a window. Is there a way to get emacs to start maximised? Ubuntu 9.10, emacs 22, if that makes a difference.

  • Synergy Locks up w7 when Visual Studio is debugging

    I love synergy but as a developer this is driving me crazy. I use Synergy to go through two x64 Windows 7 machines (with all flavors of Visual studio from 2003 to 2010 professional) and an MacOS 10.6? desktop and most of the time it works flawlessly. However, if I happen to be in the middle of a transition from one windows 7 machine to the other (it's never happened to the mac but I don't flip to it that often) when Visual Studio hits a breakpoint, the mouse and keyboard both completely lock up and the only way I can seem to do anything is to physically unplug the mouse and keyboard and plug them back in. Unfortunately I have to crawl under my desk to do that, so you can see where it'd be annoying. Anybody have any idea how I can get around this? I did note that it was much more frequent with the previous version I had of synergy+ before I upgraded/sidegraded to the current version of synergy. But it's still happening. Thanks alot,

    Hi I had a server pc with the following error. \windows\system32\config\system is corrupt or missing As to fix it i replaced the files instructed here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. Problem solved and I was able to boot up to windows desktop. But now none of the usb ports recognize any of the usb devices such as mouse, keyboard, thumbdrive nada... The usb mouse powers up (the light at the bottom lids up) but no functionality. Has anyone experienced this kind of behaviour any tip is really appreceiated. PS:There is no PS2 ports for both mouse and keyboard. Edit: Same behaviour persists in Safe mode also.

    I have 2 PCs on my desk, each one with its own screen, mouse and keyboard. And it's a pain moving from one PC to the other (even though they are one foot away from each other). So, it's time to change to different approach: KVM switches. What would you recommend for a setup like mine? I dont need to change monitors since they are both in front of me. I just need a way to change mouse and keyboard. I use Windows on both PCs and money is not an issue if it worth it. What would be the best option for a seamless integration of the two PCs? Edit: What about other software similar to Synergy, like Input Director? What's more convenient in your experience?

    I have recently been introduced to the Problem Steps Recorder on Windows 7. It's great. Trouble is, it does not recorder keyboard input. When I look at the output of a recording all I see it User keyboard input in "Untitled - Notepad" [... Backspace Backspace Backspace Backspace Backspace ...] So I know the user typed SOMETHING and then deleted five characters. Is there a way to get the PSR to record what was inputted? Or is that a security issue? This isn't a big deal for notepad, but for custom apps it would be nice to know exactly what a user typed into a text box.

While debugging the T-SQL code I have often seen developers struggling to comment code.  They spend (or waste) more time in commenting and uncommenting  than doing actual debugging of the procedure.  When I see developer struggling to comment the code I feel little uncomfortable as commenting should be a very easy task over.   • SharePoint and COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action

    I ran into a small issue today working on a deployment.  We were moving a custom ASP.NET control from my development environment into a SharePoint layout page on a staging environment .  I was expecting some minor issues to arise since I had developed the control in an ASP.NET website project, but after getting everything moved over we got an obscure COMException error the that looked like this: Cannot complete this action. Please try again. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Cannot complete this action. [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. .Lengthy stack trace goes here. Everything in the custom control was built using managed code, so we weren't sure why a COMException would suddenly appear. The control made use of an ITemplate to define its UI, so there was a lot of markup and binding code inside the template. As such, we started taking chunks of the template out of the layout page and eventually the error went away.  It was being caused by a section of code where we were calling a custom utility method inside some binding code: <%# WebUtility.FormatDecimal(.) %> Solution: It turns out that we were missing an Assembly and Import directive at the top of the page to let the page know where to find this method.  After adding these to the page, the error went away and everything worked great.  So a COMException (0x80004005) Cannot complete this action error is just SharePoint's friendly way of letting you know you're missing an assembly or imports reference.

    Traditionally, developers using Web controls enjoyed increased productivity but at the cost of control over the rendered markup. For instance, many ASP.NET controls automatically wrap their content in <table> for layout or styling purposes. This behavior runs counter to the web standards that have evolved over the past several years, which favor cleaner, terser HTML; sparing use of tables; and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for layout and styling. Furthermore, the <table> elements and other automatically-added content makes it harder to both style the Web controls using CSS and to work with the controls from client-side script. One of the aims of ASP.NET version 4.0 is to give Web Form developers greater control over the markup rendered by Web controls.     I’ve run into a couple of kinds of folks in IT. Some really like technology a lot – a whole lot –and others treat it more as a job. For those of you in the second camp, you can go back to your drab, meaningless jobs – this post is for the first group. I’m a geek. Not a little bit of a geek, a really big one. I love technology, I get excited about science and electronics in general, and I read math books when I don’t have to. Yes, I have a Star Trek item or two around the house. My daughter is fluent in both Monty Python AND Serenity. I totally admit it. So if you’re like me (OK, maybe a little less geeky than that), then go for it. Put those toys in your cubicle, wear your fan shirt, but most of all, geek up your tools. No, this isn’t an April Fool’s post – I really mean it. I’ve noticed that when I get the larger monitor, better mouse, cooler keyboard, I LIKE coming to work. It’s a way to reward yourself – I’ve even found that it makes work easier if I have the kind of things I enjoy around to work with. So buy that old “clicky” IBM keyboard, get three monitors, and buy a nice headset so that you can set all of your sounds to Monty Python WAV’s. And get to work. After searching on internet I find a package for vaio control center and downloaded it from here, I don't know how to install it.   • Move Firefox’s Tab Bar to the Top

    Would you prefer to have Firefox’s Tab Bar located at the top of the browser instead of its’ default location? See how easy it is to move the Tab Bar back and forth between the top and current positions “flip switch style” with the Tabs On Top extension. Note: Tabs On Top extension supports multi-row feature in TabMixPlus. Before You can see the “Tab Bar” in its’ default location here in our test browser…not bad but what if you prefer having it located at the top of the browser? After As soon as you have installed the extension and restarted Firefox the “Tab Bar” will have automatically moved to the top of the browser. You will most likely notice a slight decrease in tab height as well (which occurred during our tests). To move the “Tab Bar” back and forth between the top and default locations just select/deselect “Tab Bar on top” in the “Toolbars Context Menu”. You can quickly reduce the size of the upper UI after hiding some of the other toolbars and go even further if you like using extensions that will hide the “Title Bar”. This is definitely a good UI matching extension for anyone using a Chrome based theme in Firefox. Conclusion If you are unhappy with default location for Firefox’s “Tab Bar” then this extension will certainly provide an alternative option for you.     The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular file format for documents. PDF files are a popular document format for two primary reasons: first, because the PDF standard is an open standard, there are many vendors that provide PDF readers across virtually all operating systems, and many proprietary programs, such as Microsoft Word, include a "Save as PDF" option. Consequently, PDFs server as a sort of common currency of exchange. A person writing a document using Microsoft Word for Windows can save the document as a PDF, which can then be read by others whether or not they are using Windows and whether or not they have Microsoft Word installed. Second, PDF files are self-contained. Each PDF file includes its complete text, fonts, images, input fields, and other content. This means that even complicated documents with many images, an intricate layout, and with user interface elements like textboxes and checkboxes can be encapsulated in a single PDF file. Due to their ubiquity and layout capabilities, it's not uncommon for a websites to use PDF technology. For example, when purchasing goods at an online store you may be offered the ability to download an invoice as a PDF file. PDFs also support form fields, which are user interface elements like textboxes, checkboxes, comboboxes, and the like. These form fields can be entered by a user viewing the PDF or, with a bit of code, they can be entered programmatically.
