• windows service application run fine on windows XP but crashes on windows7

• Autocorrect for "fat fingers" - MS Word

  I'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in for MS Word which can handle key-presses of surrounding keys when typing at speed (rather like iPhone or Android autocorrect)? My use case is in transcribing interviews where I need to type quickly (even with the playback at half speed) - but I don't do this often enough to become a proficient touch typist. I will also be paying close attention to the text produced in subsequent analysis so I have a reasonable expectation that I'll catch any "hilarious" autocorrect errors. Any pointers to plug-ins which work at either a system level or within MS Word would be great. Even in an open source word processor at a pinch, though I'd miss the MS Word environment and my macros. • Set default expand/colapse state on pivot tables

  The Setup I have a pivot table in tabular form pulling data from an Analysis Services Cube. I want to calculate the number of days between two dates, but the setup will only allow me to pull in all date elements, not just the date. I’ve been able to deal with this easily enough by just grouping all the columns: The Problem The default state for the expand/collapse buttons in the image above is often collapsed, but that means the dates I need aren’t there and you have to open the group and manually expand them. This also happens in some random ways (as shown in the image) where only some rows expand. The Question I need a way to set these sections to always be expanded, so that the user never has to open the group to expand the rows. Ideally I’d like to avoid VBA because our end users often block it, but if that’s what’s needed then so be it. Is there a way to set my pivot table to never collapse it’s predefined groups? Note the end user is using Excel 2010

• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

  we have a few web servers and am planning to create a dashboard to show the real time stats ip address,geo-location and other custom data based on database lookups. Splunk sort of fits perfectly but wondering if there are any open source alternative . i have looked at logstash and graylog2, but to my knowledge they are more of a log analysis tools. Piwik is sort of interesting except that i cannot put any javascript on the webpages. All i have access to is apache web log. Any recommendations please..

• Windows service running as network service - how does it authenticate? Breaking change in W2K8?

  A Windows service running as "Network Service" talks to services on other machines (here: SQL Server and Analysis Services), using Windows authentication. For authentication, we have to grant permissions to the machine account of the service. E.g. if service runs on server MYSERVER in domain MYDOMAIN, it'll authenticate itself as "MYDOMAIN\MYSERVER$". - Am I correct, so far? Now here's my question: does this still apply when talking to a service on the SAME machine? Or will it authenticate with something like "NT AUTHORITY\Network Service" instead when connecting to a local service? And: is there any chance this is a breaking change from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008? We're having an actual issue in our system where the account was able to connect to local services with only the machine account having permissions in W2K3. In W2K8, this doesn't seem to work anymore: authentication to local services now fails, but still works to remote machines.

• Threading in Thunderbird based on subject

  I am in Thunderbird 3.0.4 which is the latest (as of now) for windows. I have edited the about:config as per the Mozilla Mail/News wiki I have tried with mail.correct_threading as false as well. After restarting Thunderbird it still does not thread per just subject/date. We use DeskPro which emails out to each tech every time a support ticket is created/replied to but since these are notices they do no include In-Reply-To headers. For these emails each subject line is exactly the same for each ticket. Curious if anyone can shed some light on this.

• Can I set up a 2nd home wireless router, with router2 connecting to the internet through a desktop which is wirelessly connected to router1?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated?   Today morning I found my Yahoo Mail account sent several emails with Subject re: and this body : this is crazy you should give it a look http://www.wanews15.net/biz/?news=9080205 to all my contact emails !!! I have Eset Nod32(Up to date) Anti Virus, but it couldn't find any thing. I've installed Microsoft Security Essential and it could find a virus. I remove it and I change my mail password. What happened to my Yahoo Mail Account and what should I do ? Edit : My email password was 12 characters and I couldn't remember it , so I'm using RoboForm. Is it possible that my Roboform password divulge. !!! Edit 2 : I've changed my yahoo mail password, but this morning I received Failure Notice for sending mail to some invalid mail addresses again, but there is a different this time, the sent mails didn't exist in my Sent Box. Is it a good thing or I have to do something else ?

• SQL Server cluster performance baseline

  Currently I'm tasked with getting a good performance baseline on a SQL 2005 cluster. The main db on the server is for Sharepoint, but I would like to add other dbs on the cluster. I do have access to Quest's Performance Analysis tool to help. What are key factors to look at to see if the cluster can handle additional dbs? Do you look at different performance indicators for a cluster vs a stand alone sql server? One db will be a low usage transactional db and a read only db that is used for sales data. Thanks Dwight

• cant access site intermittent as i get site not available

  i have a news site i check stuff for regularly.. once in a while i cant access it completely from my 5 different browsers and even from the command line, nslookup cant resolve, ping and tracert fails.. all not being able to resolve site name..the problem is specific to this.. i am told by the site support person that problem is that its cache on my machine or on ISP and I say thats not true because this site I access it 1-2-3 times a week from one browser only.. i only fire up the other ones in times of trouble..and when i have the problem even if i try on my secondary machines i still get the same problems.. when problem goes away all works well.... question is whats causing the intermittent dns/http problems... i don't believe this is something to do with my machine because probe disappears without me having done anything at all.

• What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

  Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?)   Today at WWDC, Steve Jobs gave his keynote and ended up having a failure on-stage when connecting to WiFi. Google had a similar issue a few weeks ago in the same conference center. • How do I make h.264 work on YouTube on Firefox on Windows 7 64 bit?

  Various news articles state that Firefox supports h.264 on Windows since version 20. As of this writing the version is 24, yet Firefox still can't play most YouTube videos. I did the HTML5 opt-in and tested both Firefox and Nightly. I also made sure media.windows-media-foundation.enabled in about:config is enabled, and it is by default both on Firefox and Nightly. What's wrong and how do I fix it? Edit: This video works. This video fails. They're both MP4 (right click video - stats for nerds), so Firefox's h.264 support works at least some of the time. Edit: When I go to a YouTube video that doesn't work, click Share - Embed and then copy-paste the src of the iframe tag into the address bar, the video works.

• How do companies know they've been hacked?

  With the news of Google and others getting hacked, I was wondering how companies find out, detect, and/or know they've been hacked in the first place? Sure, if they find a virus/trojan on user's computers or see a very high access rate to parts of their system that don't usually see much, if any, traffic. But, from what I've see in articles, the attack was pretty 'sophisticated', so I wouldn't imagine the hackers would make it so obvious of their hacking in the first place. Maybe someone can enlighten me on current detection schemes/heuristics. Thanks.

• How can I scrape specific data from a website

  I'm trying to scrape data from a website for research. The urls are nicely organized in an example.com/x format, with x as an ascending number and all of the pages are structured in the same way. I just need to grab certain headings and a few numbers which are always in the same locations. I'll then need to get this data into structured form for analysis in Excel. I have used wget before to download pages, but I can't figure out how to grab specific lines of text. Excel has a feature to grab data from the web (Data-From Web) but from what I can see it only allows me to download tables. Unfortunately, the data I need is not in tables.

• Which web browser support running multiple sessions simultaneously?

  basically, I want to group my tabs by categories and then split them to different sessios(winows). For example, I can have one windows which contains all the tabs that are work related, and some other windows that are for news, everyday use, hobbies, entertainment, etc. So I can load these sessions/windows independently whenever I want. More importanly, I need the browser to be able to manage these sessions separately, for example, when I close one window(session), it should be able to autosave it without affecting any other sessions. I think this requirement is quite simple. But somehow, neither firefox(with session manager addon) nor opera support this. so which browser actually supports this?

• How do you map a solo press of a modifier key to its own function or mapping on Windows?

  Today on hacker news there was a clever article on custom shortcut keys. The author talks about a technique for remapping a modifier key such as CTRL to ESC if CTRL were pressed without a modifier. This is useful in vim because of how often you need to press ESC. Another technique he describes is mapping the open parenthesis, ( to the left shift key, and ) to the right shift key. If another key is pressed when shift is held down, the shift key behaves normally. The author describes the software he uses on OSX, but is there a way to do this on Windows? I've heard of AutoHotKey but it seems to only fire macros when simple keys are pressed, rather than the conditional state switch that this would require.

  I would like to buy or d/l an application that will alert our sysadmin in the event of network failure, like via email and/or phone call. I've looked around the net before posting this question, but I have one main concern: if our network goes down, how can a network monitoring application send email to alert us that it's down? Doesn't this have to be an external application that looks at our network from outside? Well anyway, I want to find something that will handle this for us - freeware if possible, sice we're not looking for heavy analysis - just simple alerts. Advice is appreciated.

• Fill a table from a RAND based formula in Excel 2010

  I am trying to do a Monte Carlo simulation using Excel, but a lot of the tutorials I have found are either for older versions of the product, or are not quite what I am after. A simple example of the kind of think I am after is: Cell A1 contains the formula to simulate (for example int(6*rand())+1 to simulate rolling a dice). I have 10 rows of "Trials". What I want is to somehow point each row at a different calculation of the formula in A1. So I would end up with something like Trial Value 1 2 2 5 3 6 4 2 5 1 6 3 7 2 8 4 9 2 10 1 I have tried playing with some of the "What-if Analysis" tools, but I am a bit lost.

• How do i get Safari to ignore the SSL Certificate error?

  In IE 6, 7, 8 and Firefox 3.6.3 and 3.0.5 i have installed a local SSL Certificate on the machine i am testing on and i have gotten the browser to igonre the SSL error (which is off one of my Web Test servers) Now i am tryin to do the same thing within safari 4 and with no luck. Basically i am running some automated scripts to test my website before they go live and i need to be able to ignore these errors as they will all run autonomosly. • How can i set new domains to respond to my server

  I would like to create a page for new clients in my hosting. When someone register a domain, sometimes that person don't have a dns, or the hosting didn't created the account. So the page will not respond. Is there any way to set in my primary domain DNS to respond to all domains pointing to me, to a specific new page like home/resseler/public_html/soon.html ? Like a CNAME myserver.com/soon.html CNAME ~~all domains pointing to my ns1 and ns2. A normal default page for news domains pointed to my server without account creation.
