• Which token from a long User-Agent should I use in robots.txt?

  The definition of User-Agent states that several tokens can be included, as deemed necessary by the client. I want to block certain bots via robots.txt and I am confused as to which part of the User-Agent string to use, especially for more obscure bots. For example: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; uMBot-LN/1.0; mailto: [email protected])" JS-Kit URL Resolver, http://js-kit.com/ Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; SEOkicks-Robot +http://www.seokicks.de/robot.html Do I use the second token? Can tokens contain spaces, or did the SEOkicks folks forget a semicolon after SEOkicks-Robot? I don't actually intend on making my question specific to a couple bots - I want to know the guideline: which part of UA do I place in robots.txt for these exotic bots with UA as long as a haiku? User-agent: uMBot-LN/1.0 Disallow: / PS: Thank you but I do not need to hear that undesirable bots are better blocked with mod_security. I already have commercial mod_sec rules in place.

• Qt Certification Exams

  I'm wondering about doing a Qt Certification Exam this year, but I'm not 100% sure the investment is worth. I'm considering it because I think it could be a nice + on my resume, and as you know, I'm all for improving my software engineer persona. As I already earn a BSc and MSc degrees in computer stuff, I guess I see the certification process as some kind of adventure. Anyway, I know I'll spend a lot of time preparing myself for the exam and I just wanted to know if a Qt certification is worth the effort. Apparently there are 2 certificates that you can get in the Qt world: Nokia Certified Qt Developer (basic) Nokia Certified Qt Specialist (advanced) Nowadays I build cross-platform software in C++ and this exam would fit beautifully in my resume. My main concern is that, given the obscure future of Qt, I might be throwing time and money out the window. I'm looking for some advice regarding the usefulness of such certifications.

• Security Issues When Creating Pages in SharePoint

  I was speaking (or rather IM'ing) with Ben Collins a while back and he came across an interesting problem that I wanted to document for the sake of posterity.  If you have a SharePoint user who has permissions to create a page in a page library, but that user is having security issues trying to actually make a page, then it the security issue may be related to their access rights on the master page gallery.  Users who create pages must have at least restricted read access to the master page gallery for page creation to succeed. That is one of the joys of working in SharePoint. if something doesn't show up there is usually a good but obscure reason for it, but SharePoint certainly won't tell you outright why it is.  All I have to say is that I'm glad he ran into that issue and not me.

• Does google use chrome to check if a link is used by humans or just there for the bots?

  Does clicking a link in chrome tell google the link is used by humans and there fore not just automated backlink spam. It sounds weird but i read it today on a slightly obscure seo blog, they mensionned clicking the backlinks they make in a version of chrome where they have the "send data annonmusly to google" feature turned on. It sounded a bit far fetched but then i thought it could have a truth to it as with google now looking harder at "spammy" links it would mean at least some humans are using them. Has any one else heard anything else about this ?

• Isometric smooth fog

  I'm working on a simple 2d game with direct3d 9. It's a isometric game with diamond tiles and a staggered map. This is what I have: As you se I have some king of fog which is acomplished by having a fog matrix which is true (clear terrain) or false (obscure terran). But the result is very chunky. The fog moves as the player moves by tiles but not by pixels. Basically I check for every tile if there is fog, if so I just change the color of that tile: if(scene->fog[i+mapx][j+mapy] == FOG_NONE) { tile_color = 0x666666FF; } I also would like the fog to be smoother, for that I followed this "tutorial" but I haven't managed to work it it out. http://www.appsizematters.com/2010/07/how-to-implement-a-fog-of-war-part-2-smooth/

What the aforementioned user says is that "you could search mouse selection anywhere by using an app like Artha, or by keybinding sh -c 'firefox "http://translate.google.com/#en/fr/$(xclip -o)"' (example given translate english into french)" A lot of things are obscure for me here. I could use Artha or keybinding (as alternative), or both? How to do that in each case? and "The command I gave you will open google translate in Firefox with your mouse selection (text highlighted) as a query. Use sh -c 'firefox "https://www.google.com/search?q=$(xclip -o)"' if you want regular Google over Google translate. And obviously, that would work everywhere" I do not know what to do with that formula. What should I do exactly? How to use it? In what application?

• Is there any way to get faster app reviews?

  I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

  With backlinkwatch.com I can get a list of pages that link to a particular website. Unfortunately, it lists tons of obscure blogs and small forums, it has hard to find what link is really important. Is there a similar service, where links would be displayed sorted by "importance"? For instance, a link New York Times would be shown at the top of the list, while links in small blogs would not appear before a few pages. "Importance" can be subjective, so I suggest using the PageRank, but other metrics could be fine too.

  We are using Geolocation (getCurrentPosition()) in a website to determine a users position when using our site from a mobile device. I want to write an article explaining how the user can obtain the best results. Am I correct in assuming: Enabling GPS will yield the best result when in rural areas (less buildings to obscure line of sight to the satelites) Enabling Wi-Fi will yield the best results when in urban areas (generally more Wi-Fi hotspots available) Is it true that Android phones have better results from silently harvesting Wi-Fi hotspot details? • Turned off my computer and o it's opened up in grub. How do I tell it to boot into lubuntu?

  It's just a commandline. I have tried my usual trick of sticking a usb with lubuntu in there to see if I can boot from my usb but I get a boot error (I normally wouldn't using that usb). GNU grub version 2.00-7ubuntu11 also just using basic things I know I hits ls then tried boot hd0 but it says: you need to load the kernel first I have no idea how to do this. I looked at the commands and most of them hve obscure names that are not helpful. UPDATE: I hit exit and that allowed be to boot from usb. Hopefully I will be able to find what I need to install to get it booting normally again from there.

• How to Get Vim to do Filename Completion Even When You are Root

If you occasionally edit files as root (I never do, I always use pfexec, wink wink), then you may have noticed that the vim (Vi Improved) editor that normally does filename completion via the <Tab> key now gives you something like: :e /etc/mo^I when you try to open up /etc/motd with a little less typing So, there are at least three solutions to this: Use <Ctrl>-E instead of <Tab> Use the "-N" flag when you start Vim :set wildchar=<Tab> (Enter those 5 characters, not an actual Tab) The reason for this? It seems that when you are root, Vim sets it's "compatible" flag, which makes it behave more like its ancestor vi. In turn this makes Vim set 'wildchar' to <Ctrl>-E. • Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

• San Disk Cruzer Glide 32 GB and 8Gb can't be copied to.

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 with a kernal of 3.0.0-17-generic (#30-Ubuntu SMP Thu Mar 8 17:34:21 UT When I tried to copy files to a San Disk Cruzer 8gb usb drive, the copy process went a short way and then completely stopped. Although I have copied items to the USB drive from my PC before, this time the files would start quickly enough but always stop shortly after starting. I figure the 8 gb was bad, so I went and got a brand new 32 gb usb drive from a store, unpackaged it and plugged it in, still unable to copy to the usb drive. So is there some kind of incompatibility or issue where San Disk Cruzer Glides are no longer supporting it. Is there an obscure setting that I am missing? Any help would be appreciated

• Computer bluescreen-ing with 0x7A and 0xF4 errors

  Hiya, This computer is locking up for around 5-30 seconds before throwing Blue Screen of Death's with 0x7A and occasionally 0xF4 errors. The log files don't really show anything informative, and Windows Update doesn't show any new drivers for the HDD. Upon restart, it shows a "A disk error has occurred /n Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue", and to fix this I go into WinRE via the pendrive and run "bootsect /nt60 C: /force /mbr" and that seems to fix it so it boots. • Monitoring User Login time

  Hi, i have recently been given the task of trying to work out why the login time (not machine boot time) for some of our users seems slow. The vast majority of clients (95%) are running on XP sp3, Windows 2003 domain controlers. Most users have the same model of machine. I would like to be able to see how long each of the polices are taking to load (if possable split user and computer) and any other info that might help (services starting etc) I changed the userenvdebuglevel reg option to generate the userenv.log file but it did'nt contain very much info Thanks Luke

• Major permission repair needed on Mac Os

  I made the fatal error of copying and pasting a sudo command into my terminal without double checking it, here it is. sudo -R mysql / What this does (for those that don't know) is recursively change the owner every file from the root down to mysql!! obviously not what i was intending This has of course played havoc with my system, the first thing i did was the apple permission repair but that only works for files that it has an idea of though it has changed a lot of file ownerships back to root. It seems that many library files are still owned incorrectly, as a lot of problems don't work. What i propose doing as a temporary fix until i can reinstall mountain lion is to recursively set all ownerships that are mysql to Luke. I'm not sure what they should precisely but this is still better than nothing. Is this possible using a shell script? I realise that this won't fix the problem properly and i will have to reformat but i need the machine in a workable state just for this week.

  Hi, We have recently been tasked with looking after the user login side of things in our enterprise (windows clients in active directory). We have a system at the moment that uses a vbscript login/loggof script to call a couple of DLL written in vb 6. The DLL's actions are controled by some config files based on users/groups witch is administrated from a central app. This is quite a good system, but kind of want to come away from vb6 for the dll's (maybe port them to c++ but them you have to make them com+ to call them from vbscripts etc) and possibly away from vbscript for the actual login scripts themselves. Just wondered what other people are using, what people can suggest etc Thanks Luke

  Sucking Less Every Year -Jeff Atwood I had come across this insightful article.Quoting directly from the post I've often thought that sucking less every year is how humble programmers improve. You should be unhappy with code you wrote a year ago. If you aren't, that means either A) you haven't learned anything in a year, B) your code can't be improved, or C) you never revisit old code. All of these are the kiss of death for software developers. How often does this happen or not happen to you? How long before you see an actual improvement in your coding ? month, year? Do you ever revisit Your old code? How often does your old code plague you? or how often do you have to deal with your technical debt. It is definitely very painful to fix old bugs n dirty code that we may have done to quickly meet a deadline and those quick fixes ,some cases we may have to rewrite most of the application/code. No arguments about that. Some of the developers i had come across argued that they were already at the evolved stage where their coding doesn't need improvement or cant get improved anymore. Does this happen? If so how many years into coding on a particular language does one expect this to happen? Related: Ever look back at some of your old code and grimace in pain? • How can Agile methodologies be adapted to High Volume processing system development?

  I am developing high volume processing systems. Like mathematical models that calculate various parameters based on millions of records, calculated derived fields over milions of records, process huge files having transactions etc... I am well aware of unit testing methodologies and if my code is in C# I have no problem in unit testing it. Problem is I often have code in T-SQL, C# code that is a SQL stored assembly, and SSIS workflow with a good amount of logic (and outcomes etc) or some SAS process. What is the approach YOu use when developing such systems. I usually develop several tests as Stored procedures in a designed schema(TEST) and then automatically run them overnight and check out the results. But this is only for T-SQL. And Continous integration IS hard. But the problem is with testing SSIS packages. How do You test it? What is Your preferred approach for stubbing data into tables (especially if You need a lot data initialization). I have some approach derived over the years but maybe I am just not reading enough articles. So Banking, Telecom, Risk developers out there. How do You test your mission critical apps that process milions of records at end day, month end etc? What frameworks do You use? How do You validate that Your ssis package is Correct (as You develop it)/ How do You achieve continous integration in such an environment (Personally I never got there)? I hope this is not to open-ended question. How do You test Your map-reduce jobs for example (i do not use hadoop but this is quite similar). luke Hope that this is not too open ended
