• SDcardReader/Writer is not connected

  My IOGEAR sdCardReader/Writer is recongized on Ubutu(by using VM ware) but when I tried to connect to "Removable Devices - Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" , the follwoing message is appeared. " The connection for the USB device "Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" was unsuccessful. The device is currently in use. " But I think it is not used. Should I use IOGEAR driver for this one? When I connect the card reader, Ubuntu automatically got the "Alcor Micro Flash Card Reader/Writer" . How can I fix the problem? • Low Graphics and laggy screen after update to 13.10 from 13.04

  After updating from 13.04 to 13.10 many of 3D unity stuff has stopped working, I am suing Samsung Series 3 (NP350V5X) Laptop which has Switchable Intel and AMD Radeon HD 7670M GFX. xserver-xorg-video-ati does works but NO 3D support and graphics are very low. [I am currently using this] fglrx & fglrx-updates shows blank screen after Login. • How does datomic handle "corrections"?

  tl;dr Rich Hickey describes datomic as a system which implicitly deals with timestamps associated with data storage from my experience, data is often imperfectly stored in systems, and on many occasions needs to retroactively be corrected (ie, often the question of "was a True on Tuesday at 12:00pm?" will have an incorrect answer stored in the database) This seems like a spot where the abstractions behind datomic might break - do they? If they don't, how does the system handle such corrections? Rich Hickey, in several of his talks, justifies the creation of datomic, and explains its benefits. His work, if I understand correctly, is motivated by core the insight that humans, when speaking about data and facts, implicitly associate some of the related context into their work(a date-time). By pushing the work required to manage the implicit date-time component of context into the database, he's created a system which is both much easier to understand, and much easier to program. This turns out to be relevant to most database programmers in practice - his work saves everyone a lot of time managing complex, hard to produce/debug/fix, time queries. However, especially in large databases, data is often damaged/incorrect (maybe it was not input correctly, maybe it eroded over time, etc...). While most database updates are insertions of new facts, and should indeed be treated that way, a non-trivial subset of the work required to manage time-queries has to do with retroactive updates. I have yet to see any documentation which explains how such corrections, or retroactive updates, are handled by datomic; from my experience, they are a non-trivial (and incredibly difficult to deal with) subset of time-related data manipulation that database programmers are faced with. Does datomic gracefully handle such updates? If so, how?

• Banshee doesn't like opening websites

  I have come across two bugs (which will be added to launchpad if it's not resolved here) When I open any of the websites in Banshee Amazon or Miro Guide as soon as the site is finished loading it crashes Banshee. If I play any video local or remote it will show 1 frame maybe 0.5 sec of video then I get a black screen and audio continues in the backgound. Specs & Details I have a Fujitsu Amilo 1718 laptop with 2 gig of ram (original 1 gig) graphics is provided by ATI Radeon Xpress 200M (don't laugh it works with compiz....just) I have a link to the output of banshee --debug Here Don't have time to read? So if any one has come across a fix for this problem please share!! additional info Both VLC and Miro work on my system so there isn't a system wide problem with video and I haven't mentioned mono so no trolling it will get voted down.

• Issue with image lightbox and enlargement / Jquery Mobile

  I'm working on a redesign of my weather website using Jquery Mobile. I have it set up so that you drill down through a series of content containers to get to the weather info (each group of info opens in a dialog display). Everything's worked well, but I've run into an issue with my images. I have them sized so that they fit a mobile device's screen nicely, but because of that, when you look at them in a desktop browser, you can't really make out what the image is. I've tried several image lightbox / enlargement solutions, but for some reason, none of them have worked. Either nothing happens or the images open in a new window. I thought that this might be caused by Jquery Mobile somehow overwriting the scripts and css of the lightbox / enlargements I've tried. I'm not completely sure though that this is the case, and if it is, how I can get around it to be able to enlarge the images to their original size, preferably onclick. • Web development and tips for building a website and the advantages of using HTML 5 in the site

  I am trying to make a website for my college, and the program starts from jan 13 and we get 15 days of time to develop a running site. The best site will become the college site. I am participating, for all these days i used to participate in C and C++ contests and also won a few contests, now i am really into web dev for the last 2 months. I knew HTML long ago recently i brushed up on it and learnt javascript from "javascript and jquery the missing manual"(sorry for not adding the link) and recently bought "PHP and MySQL web development" and I am going on fine with it, but still a lot of pages to cover in that book. After this what do i need to know ajax is one language to concentrate on, what else do i need to do to make this project up and running. Can someone let me know the tricks of this trade and complete information to build a site like this. Right now i am good with javascript HTML and CSS and thats it, what else I am studying HTML5 and CSS3 its pretty fast and neat. The info on site is a college website which includes students profiles where the have to register their info with college id number and pretty much thats it. Think of it as a college site + a social networking site for students, where they can upload there pics and videos pdf books etc.

• Cannot view, use, or open CDs or DVDs in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu 12.04 and I have encountered a rather irritating problem. Whenever I insert a CD or DVD (whether it have data, music, movies, or nothing at all), nothing pops up saying "you have inserted a CD", "play with Rhythmbox?" etc. It doesn't show the CD in the launcher/dock or anything of the sort. This is especially peculiar because not only do I have a standard IDE built-in optical drive, but I have an external USB optical drive. Neither work. In addition, whenever I go to "Computer///" and I click (double click, right click, or even left click) on "CD/DVD Drive" nothing happens, when I right click and select "Open" nothing happens either [for either of the two drives (both are listed in Computer///)] And if I insert a blank disk and go to a disk burning program such as Brasero, and try to burn to the drive it detects no CDs or DVDs of any kind. • Entity Framework and layer separation

  I'm trying to work a bit with Entity Framework and I got a question regarding the separation of layers. I usually use the UI - BLL - DAL approach and I'm wondering how to use EF here. My DAL would usually be something like GetPerson(id) { // some sql return new Person(...) } BLL: GetPerson(id) { Return personDL.GetPerson(id) } UI: Person p = personBL.GetPerson(id) My question now is: since EF creates my model and DAL, is it a good idea to wrap EF inside my own DAL or is it just a waste of time? If I don't need to wrap EF would I still place my Model.esmx inside its own class library or would it be fine to just place it inside my BLL and work some there? I can't really see the reason to wrap EF inside my own DAL but I want to know what other people are doing. • Ubuntu 13.10, kernel 3.11 blank screen issue with hybrid graphics

I basically had to install 12.04 LTS and use their 3.5 kernel family to get the system to boot. The 3.8 from 12.10 or the newest 3.11 from Ubuntu 13.10 leave me with a black screen upon boot. On one occasion I did hear the "log in" sound, but the screen did not display anything. I have purged all nvidia drivers so I guess it should just use the intel drivers, but apparently this is all messed up with newer kernel versions. This is different from the other "nvidia boots into blank screen" bug in that I don't rely solely on an nvidia card. Surely the intel on-chip card should be supported and leave me with something different from a blank screen? Again, it only works with kernel versions 3.5.0-41-generic, not with the 3.11.0-12 one that ships with Ubuntu 13.10. When I go into the grub menu and change the boot options from 'quiet splash' to 'nomodeset' I am able to boot the system, but then I don't get any graphics and trying 'sudo service lightdm start' doesn't succeed (I get 100% CPU for apport, but this doesn't do anything either, so I kill it). Help, I'm all out of ideas. EDIT: Let me add that I'm using the EFI boot system and have a dual-boot installation with Windows 8.

• cannot boot Ubuntu after fresh install

  I just installed Ubuntu on a Lenovo v570, and cannot boot into the system. All I get is a loop, where some (bios) info is displayed, and then the computer asks me where I would like to boot from. I tried reinstalling, reinstalling with a custom partition scheme, and boot -repair after the install. None of these work. I can see the files on my harddisk have been copied. I have installed many Ubuntus in the past, as well other distros where custom partitioning is required. I don't know where to find any useful information since I don't even get too the grub menu. One odd thing I noticed. The bios now had options to boot USB, OpenSuse,Fedora, or the HD. I am not dual booting. I also realized that the boot info is for a network boot, which means the computer is not recognizing what to boot. It is boot an HD problem, because I can install other OSs just fine. I am completely stumped. I would like to settle this, and end up with a tutorial, that explains to me what happened.

• What exactly is bootstrap admin-template and how it is supposed to be used

  So this is my second ASP.NET MVC 4 project. It's decided that for this one we will use this template and it was said in a way that I felt really stupid for not knowing how exactly this template will help us and what exactly we gain by using it. I'm used to using HTML/CSS for the UI combined with jQuery. Now it seems that instead of jQuery we will be using bootstrap which as far as I understand is just another JS library created from twitter, so if that's it then this part is clear. What I really need to clarify for myself is what exactly this theme is used for, what is offering, why one would want to use such a theme? From what I see in the live demo maybe it's just a stack of premade controls that you can use in the front end along with bootstrap.js and maybe I'm just confused because on the page is shown as much as possible just for presentational purposes. If that's right, still I wonder where I can find info for the current theme, the controls that it offers and the functionality that I get and not least - how to use it. But still those are just my assumptions. What I really need is a clarification on what exactly is this theme for, what is the advantage using it, is there a good tutorials about how to use such themes in the context of ASP.NET MVC 3+. Also any additional info about this theme and generally on using themes in ASP.NET MVC will be much appreciated.

  Ever since I made the permanent switch from Vista to Ubuntu i've had wireless connectivity problems. From watching the network manager when it disconnects it seems like it turns off the receiver for some reason. Could it be bad drivers? I used their install software and the site doesn't really offer driver downloads. The adapter is a Netgear WNA1000 if memory serves, and I don't know much about the router except that it's a Motorola Surfboard. • Should business services cross bounded contexts?

  Firstly, I am following the convention that a bounded context is synonymous to a department, or possibly one department has 1 to many bounded contexts. We have a client consultancy department that has a Documentation Service. Documents are stored in the Document Store Service (which is where all documents in the company are stored - it is a utility service), and the Documentation Service stores information about that document (a business service). As it was designed for the client consultancy, it is information relevant to them. Now health and safety need somewhere to store information about a document. This is different information to client consultancy, but I have been instructed to extend the existing service to account for this extra information. I feel this service is now crossing a bounded context. My worry is that all departments will eventually store there information in here and the service will become bloated, trying to be all things to all departments. Each document record will only store a subset of the information because it will only belong to one department. It will get worse when different departments want to store the same information but refer to it in a diferent ways, or when two departments want to store different information that they refer to in the same way. In my understanding, this is exactly the reason for bounded contexts. I feel each department should have it's own business service for information about a document, but use the same utility service to actually store the document. What would be the correct approach?

Complex: What is estimated price for an house at "DD,Some Street,XYZ Post Code" (worked out from average values of historic data filtered by various characteristics of the house: house post code, no of bed rooms, total area, and other deeper insights like house building type, year of built, features)? In addition to average price, the application should support other property info ** maximum, or minimum price..etc and trend (graph) on a selected property attribute over a period of time**. Hence, the queries should not enforce the search based on a primary key or few fixed fields In other words, queries can be What is the change in 3 Bed Room house price (irrespective of location) over last 30 days? What kind of properties we can get for X price (irrespective of location or house type) The challenge I have is identifying the domain (BI/ Data Analytical or DB Design or DB Query Interface or DW related or something else) this problem (dynamic query on historic data) belong to, so that I can do further exploration My findings so far I could be wrong on the following, so please correct me if you think so I briefly read about BI/Data Analytics - I think it is heavy weight solution for my problem and has scalability issues. • How to get Nvidia graphics working on Sony Z laptop?

  I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working? • Splitting Pygame functionality between classes or modules?

  I am attempting to make my pygame application more modular so that different functionalities are split up into different classes and modules. I am having some trouble getting pygame to allow me to draw or load images in secondary classes when the display has been set and pygame.init() has been done in my main class. I have typically used C# and XNA to accomplish this sort of behavior, but this time I need to use python. How do I init pygame in class1, then create an instance of class2 which loads and converts() images. I have tried pygame.init() in class 2 but then it tells me no display mode has been set, when it has been set in class1. I am under the impression i do not wnat to create multiple pygame.displays as that gets problematic I am probably missing something pythonic and simple but I am not sure what. How do I create a Display class, init python and then have other modules do my work like loading images, fonts etc.? here is the simplest version of what I am doing: class1: def __init__(self): self.screen = pygame.display.set_mode((600,400)) self.imageLoader = class2() class2: def __init__(self): self.images = ['list of images'] def load_images(): self.images = os.listdir('./images/') #get all images in the images directory for img in self.images: #read all images in the directory and load them into pygame new_img = pygame.image.load(os.path.join('images', img)).convert() scale_img = pygame.transform.scale(new_img, (pygame.display.Info().current_w, pygame.display.Info().current_h)) self.images.append(scale_img) if __name__ == "__main__": c1 = class1() c1.imageLoader.load_images() Of course when it tries to load an convert the images it tells me pygame has not been initialized, so i throw in a pygame.init() in class2 ( i have heard it is safe to init multiple times) and then the error goes to pygame.error: No video mode has been set

• Computer Says No: Mobile Apps Connectivity Messages

  Sharing some insight into connectivity messages for mobile applications. Based on some recent ethnography done my myself, and prompted by a real business case, I would recommend a message that: In plain language, briefly and directly tells the user what is wrong and why. Something like: Cannot connect because of a network problem. Affords the user a means to retry connecting (or attempts automatically). Mobile context of use means users use anticipate interruptibility and disruption of task, so they will try again as an effective course of action. Tells the user when connection is re-established, and off they go. Saves any work already done, implicitly. (Bonus points on the ADF critical task setting scale) The following images showing my experience reading ADF-EMG Google Groups notification my (Android ICS) Samsung Galaxy S2 during a loss of WiFi give you a good idea of a suitable kind of messaging user experience for mobile apps in this kind of scenario. Inline connection lost message with Retry button Connection re-established toaster message The UX possible is dependent on device and platform features, sure, so remember to integrate with the device capability (see point 10 of this great article on mobile design by Brent White and Lynn Hnilo-Rampoldi) but taking these considerations into account is far superior to a context-free dumbed down common error message repurposed from the desktop mentality about the connection to the server being lost, so just "Click OK" or "Contact your sysadmin.".
