• How do I use an internal SSD as a scratch disk for FCP X?

  I'm contemplating setting up my MacBook Air as a video editing machine. If I do this, I'll upgrade to a 256 GB SSD, and I should be able to keep around 100 GB or more free for video editing. The video files would of course be stored externally, but save purchasing some expensive Thunderbolt RAID device (which I suppose is gradually becoming more of an option), it will be slow for read/writes. How can I have a set up where I take advantage of my SSD's speed for a scratch disk/cache for FCP X, but still have the TB(s) of storage of externals? I don't want to have to be moving files constantly back and forth, this is about saving time not wasting it.

• Skype Optimization - Port Forwarding on a Router

  I was watching this Video which talked about using port-forwarding to optimize your LAN for skype calls. According to the video, as explained in the first couple of minutes in the video, the reason you would need optimization is because if the person your call has a firewall setup, your connection has to go-through a third-party computer to connect to them. I believe I stated this correct (maybe not). None the less, my question is this: do both parties on the call need to enable port forwarding to optimize skype, or just one party (person)?

• Convert png sequence to x264 with ffmpeg

  I am trying to convert a series of pngs into an mp4 video. I am using ffmpeg, and want to encode the video with the x264 codec. Using the command ffmpeg -y -r 30 -b 1800k -i _tmp%04d.png -vcodec libx264 out.mp4 I get the following warning message Incompatible pixel format 'bgra' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' My understanding is that there is an alpha channel in the pngs, which the x264 encoder cannot handle. Is there a way to get around this problem? Is there, for example, a way to get the encoder to ignore the alpha channel (my pngs don't actually have any transparent elements)? I'm aware that I could batch convert the pngs beforehand to strip the alpha channel, but the sequence of images is produced by another program, and having to preprocess the images each time I make a video would be less than optimal. Edit: After stripping the alpha channel from each frame using the command convert in.png -background white -flatten +matte out.png ffmpeg gives the warning message Incompatible pixel format 'pal8' for codec 'libx264', auto-selecting format 'yuv420p' so still no dice.

• Do the amount of CUDA cores matter for Sony Vegas

  I am building a new PC, and I am wondering if I am making the right choices. The PC will mainly be used for video editing, and mainly in Sony Vegas. Now I have the choice of going with a video that that has more of less CUDO cores. To be precise I am choosing between a Ti and non-Ti version of an nVidea video card. Now I have read that sony vegas can partially use the CUDA cores to it's benefit, but not that much, and only if you use GPU acceleration. On the other hand I have heard it's better to leave GPU acceleration off as it will effect the quality of the output. Making it so that the CUDA cores actually don't make much of a difference after all.

• Windows 7 - Non Admin run as Admin for Explorer - still can't see all tmp internet files

  I'm trying to retrieve video files from the IE 8 cache for a user that's not an admin in Win 7. As a non admin user, I run Explorer as admin and still can't see the temp internet files for the non admin user. Only if I login as a user that is admin can I see the files. Is there any way I can see the files w/o having to go through the login process? Essentially, I want the video file from this page and others like it: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/111585/1027823

• Send files ending in .mp4 in Apache with HTTP 206 Partial Content

  I am using Apache as web server and the return code is always HTTP/1.1 200. I want to set some kind of handler or use a mod to return HTTP/1.1 206 when the extension of the file requested is .mp4 so it can do video seeking, my web server is already returning some headers to do seeking, but it doesn't work. Is this possible? • Inconsistent black levels in windows 7 media center

  I've got a HTPC running windows 7 64bit, hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. My problem is different types of video are displaying different black levels on the TV. When I play a bluray through Arcsoft Total Media Theater I have to set the "HDMI Black Level" to "normal" in the TV picture options menu. When I play recorded TV through WMC I have to set it to "low" otherwise the black colors on the video are washed out and grey. Is there any way to configure the system so all videos are displayed with the same black level? The hdmi black level setting is deep in Samsung's menus so it's becoming a chore to keep switching it everytime I watch a different type of video. I'm using an ATI 4670 graphics card with HDMI output going straight to the TV. In the ATI catalyst control center I've got pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB) since the TV wont allow me to change the HDMI black level if I choose one of the other settings.

• How to make use of movie events imported by imovie 09 from a DVR

  I have imported about 100 clips of video from my DVR using imovie 09 and they are all saved under movie events folder, this is ok. The problem is all the movie events files are not in standard formats, they are in some 'Apple Intermediate Format' only Quicktime and iMovie recoginize and play. My problem is I simply want to give my 100 clips of video to someone using PC and this intermediate format produced by imovie is not playable or convertable by anything I have found. Now the only option for me seems to be creating a project in iMovie and drag all the clips into the project and then export these 100 clips into a single standard file, but iMovie doesn't even let me conveninent do that, I can only click at some clip, select all, drag into the project, and repeat for 100 more times, Is there a alternative way I can do so? (or use Quicktime player to convert video formats one by one). Thanks

  I have a 2GB RAR file that contains a 9GB video file. I'm using a FAT32 file system. Now I want to unzip that file but after 4GB I get an error due to the FAT32 file size limit. Now I want to know that how I can extract that video? I know that one way is to convert my partition to NTFS but I don't want to follow that way. I've also tried 7-zip but that again gives error after 4GB. One other way is to split that file but I don't know how I can split a video file that is zipped. So any idea please? • Intel motherboard drops HDMI output after Windows boots

  I have an Intel motherboard (DH67CL) that uses Intel HD 3000 video. It has two video output ports: HDMI and DVI. Both my monitors are DVI, so I have two cables: a DVI-DVI and an HDMI-DVI. If I plug a monitor into just one of these ports, things work fine. But if I plug monitors into each of the ports, the system startup screens show on both monitors, along with the "Starting Windows..." screen, but as soon as the system boots into Windows, the HDMI-connected monitor goes to sleep. When I use the Intel video control panel, the HDMI-connected monitor is not detected. How do I get a dual-monitor setup to work?

• Downloading videos from a flash website

  There are those plugins that can capture flash videos from websites like Youtube and others. There's also the browsing cache which keeps the videos and I can copy them somewhere else and have them stored on my computer. I know of these, but how can I download a video from a website that (I think) is all flash because the address doesn't change wherever you navigate to and so it stays the same when you play a video that's on the website? No plugin I've tried (realplayer, ant video downloadr, IDM) have worked with it and nothing gets cached from that website.

  I am using Sony Vegas Pro 8.0b. I want to import an AVI (DivX), where the audio codec used is "0x2000 (Dolby AC3) AC3 ", according to GSpot. I later want to render this video again in another codec etc. I have done videoconversion with Vegas 8 many times and ususally do not run into any problems. However with this particular video, the audio stream simply does not show up in the track list or anywhere! There is simply no audio (the video is fine). Questions: is Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 unable to import AC3? If yes, can I make it so that it becomes able to do so and how?

• Moving LiveMeeting admin functions to a different window

  I run a user group, and often host LiveMeeting sessions. I use a projector, with a crowd watching. How do I do the admin stuff (respond to Q&A, etc) on one window, and just have the video on the 'extended monitor'? I dont' want the people in the audience to see anything except the video feed, but I want to be able to watch questions come in, etc... Note: I don't have a problem extending the screen across the two monitors - I already have different stuff showing on my screen compared to the projector. I just want a way to put the LM video on Monitor 2 (projector), and the LM controls on Monitor 1.

• File corruption when copying different file on raid 1

  I have a RAID 1 configuration of 2 1TB drives on a Fedora 12 box. Most of what is stored there are video files that are numerical labeled. The problem I'm having is that I had one of the video files get corrupted. I copied a replacement from a backup and replaced the bad file and now it works fine. However, after doing this the next numbered file goes from 350MB to 200KB and all but about .5 second of video disappears. If I then replace that file it happens to the next one down the line. Ex: Replace corrupt file 1.avi and file 2.avi shrinks to 200KB. Replace now corrupted 2.avi and it works but 3.avi gets screwed up. I have run SMART tests on the drives and they report fine. Does anyone have any tests I can run to try to figure out what is going on? EDIT: It is a two disk software RAID 1 with an ext4 filesystem

However, on some systems when the user clicks the link, Windows Media Player gives them the error: Window Media Player cannot play the file. • Red and blue are swapped on Youtube

  Since Sunday (April 1st), red and blue are sometimes swapped when I watch videos on YouTube. Examples are "Peeling Apple Like A Boss" (blue arms and apple) or, to my dismay, the famous Red vs. Blue series (like this video) which sucks. Here is a screenshot of the RvB episode at 1:28. Vimeo is OK, other web video services are OK, only most YouTube videos are affected ... well, all that I could find so far. This video looks OK in Firefox but it's broken in Chrome. The episode of RvB looks wrong in both browsers. Local videos look file. What could be causing this?

• Batch Convert .mkv to .mp4 with VLC

  i want to batch convert all .mkv file in a folder into .mp4 with vlc. it should use the original video-/audio-stream and if possible the .ass subtitle of the .mkv. so its not really a convert, its more changing the container. (my player cant read the mkv) if i do this conversion by hand (manually) it works, but i have a lot of mkv to convert, so it would take a lot of time. i have searched the internet for a batch file to do this and i found a few and tried to modify them to my wish, but all attempts i tried just created a .mp4 file that doesn't contain the audio-stream and the video-stream also cannot be rendered by all my mediaplayers on the pc. so i would be very thankful, if you could tell me how the batch have to look like, so it works with original video-/audio-stream (maybe .ass subtitle)

Probably a long shot, but does anyone know of a way to have something like a "common area" client, where a PC connected to a webcam and speakers/mic can become a bookable resource, dragged in to conversations and automatically show video? • How can I convert and repair MPEG-TS (DVB-S captures) for better playback?

  I have a lot of MPEG-TS video files (H.264 video with AC3 or MP3 in a .TS container) captured from a DVB-S capture card. When I play these videos it's much slower to seek in the video (ie. skip 30 seconds, etc) than with other files. I'm not sure if the problem is the H.264 encoding (reference frame count?) or the MPEG-TS container, or if the MPEG-TS file contains sync errors, etc. Does anybody have a good workflow for converting and repairing these files?

  Alright, first, let me explain. I purchased some content through Microsoft's Zune/Xbox Video service, and man that was a mistake. After trying several times to get the video to play, I received an error along the lines of "out of licenses." Lucky for me, I was able to recover the file I was looking for off of a backup, but now I'm having problems playing it. It works fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Zune or Xbox Video (on Windows 8). I contacted Zune's customer support, and of course they couldn't help me. So, I legally own the content, I just want to be able to play it where I want to play it. It's ridiculous that I can't. I know there are ways to do this out there, I just can't figure it out (I keep getting directed to this piece of junk thing called Almedia, which kind of seems to work, but was only putting out audio in the demo version).   The sound on my computer suddenly stopped working. When I check Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, I get "No Audio Device" with everything grayed out. When I check the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" I see the following list: Audio Codecs Legacy Audio Drivers Legacy Video Capture Devices Media Control Devices MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device Standard Game Port Video Codecs None of these looks like my sound card. Of course, my sound "card" is not really a sound card, it's integrated with the nVidia-nForce motherboard. I'm running Windows XP. So is one of the above my sound device, or is the OS not detecting it? If the latter, how do I get it to detect it?

• Disable Control-L hotkey on YouTube

  I am used to using Ctrll to access my address bar. Unfortunately YouTube "helpfully" defines Ctrll as a hotkey to jump forward several seconds in the currently playing video, so I need a way to stop YouTube from adding that key binding. A Greasemonkey/Scriptish userscript that disables the binding after page load would be acceptable. To be clear, this is while I am on a YouTube video's page, not on a third-party site that has embedded a YouTube video, and the behavior occurs when the Flash player does not have focus. Note: I am aware that Altd does the same as Ctrll in Firefox, but I'm too used to Ctrll and I'd rather not be forced to switch. Edit: OS-specific solutions are less desirable since I use multiple OSes; in-browser solutions are preferred.
