• Errors when trying to compile the driver for the rtl8192su wireless adapter

  I have a wireless to usb adapter, and I'm having some trouble to install the drivers on Ubuntu.   I face problem in login to Ubuntu 12.04. I think it's caused by accessing super user (if not wrong). I type sudo nautilus to put a background to burg, but i fail x_x. After reboot, i can't login to desktop. But i can login as guest. I had 'googling' for problem solving. Most of it is login to screen like terminal (maybe tty console) by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. Right now, I am downloading the packages through http://packages.ubuntu.com/: Search for [package-name] Select the package Click on amd64/i386 for download Download the actual file This takes too long for me and as someone who really likes the shell, I would like to do something like the next (imaginary) command: apt-get get-deb-file [package-name] I could not find something like this in the apt-get manual page. The most close I found was the --download-only switch, but this puts the package in /var/cache/apt/archives (which requires root permissions) and not in the current directory.

  I have an internal website and virtual directory http://server2012/logs. I created a CNAME on my DNS server as LOGS - server2012. I would like to set it up so that http://LOGS redirects to http://server2012/logs. Ideally, I would still want it so that all pages appear in the browser as being off from the LOGS URL. So http://LOGS/network.html?site=32 is what is displayed in the browser, but it is really being served from http://server2012/logs/network.html?site=32. I've looked at URL rewrite, but can't seem to get to work.

• Is there a way to mirror directory changes in Terminator?

  I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 and am using Terminator as my primary terminal. I like it because it lets me keep a python interpreter and bash terminal open at the same time, in the same view. What is annoying is that I end up moving between directories A LOT, and then I have to do it twice. Is there a way to set up a terminator configuration to do that? To have terminator mirror directory changes. I'm guessing I'm not the only one that finds that frustrating!

• In Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to grant a user account the "log on as a service" right and if so, how?

  The title says it all. I need to have the ability for a local user account to log on as a service on a computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. In Windows 7 Ultimate, this is accomplished by going to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy and adding the user to the "Log on as a service" policy. In Home Premium, there is no Local Security Policy in the Control Panel.   Having screwwed up my permissions by trying to have two users accessing one home folder I'm now going through the process of reseting my main user home permissions via the OSX install disk utilities, which seems to be taking a while. Does this process take a while to do, though I assume it depends on how many files I have in the folder, which in my case is a good few 100 GBs. At what point should I be concerned that it may have got stuck and thus reset my computer and try again? I assume, though not sure that if the little circle indicator is still moving then it's not completely frozen, but as there's no progress bar or details I'm not sure how true that is.

• Does Windows Virtual PC support virtual applications with an XP Home Edition guest?

  I've installed Windows Virtual PC in Windows 7 and have the XP Mode virtual PC working. I can run virtual applications with it and the integration features all work. I used Disk2VHD to convert my existing XP Home drive into a VHD, so I can use it as a virtual PC, too. It works in general, but it sometimes pops up the "Could not enable integration features" error. I don't see the host computer's drives in the guest, and I don't see the guest's applications in the host's Start menu. Is this just because the guest is XP Home instead of XP Pro? Do I have to reinstall all these apps in the XP Mode VHD in order to get them as virtual apps? Could something else be preventing it from working?

I need to have root access, to be able to access it remotely via SSH/FTP/HTTP, and to be able to install things like subversion, etc. I currently have Comcast so I have plenty of bandwidth, but I am not sure if this would violate the TOS, and/or compromise the security of my home network.   We are looking at renting out the basement suit in our home and want to offer internet as part of the package. I however do not want the downstairs tennent to have access to our network (home office = private data). We currently have a pfsense firewall as our gateway and a Windows Server 2003 box is doing our primary DHCP (192.168.0.0/24) and DNS. Here's what I'd like to do... I'd like to setup another subnet on the DHCP server (192.168.1.0/24), and hook in another wireless router (as access point only) and address it as 192.168.1.1... from there the router will hook into our primary switch and then out through the firewall. Will Server 2003 (If I add a 192.168.1.x/24 IP to the nic) serve DHCP to the devices that connect to the new router, and will it isolate that from our network? Thanks in advance... • Can I install Win 7 Pro with a Win 7 Home Premium disc?

  So I got the 64bit Win 7 Pro disc from the Ultimate steal for cheap enough... but I found out that some stuff that I want to run (games mostly... since that is the only reason I keep Windows around...) did not do too well on the 64bit OS. So I have borrowed my friend's install disc, but it turns out that his is only Home Premium rather than Pro which I have a serial for. Can I still just run through the Home Premium install and use my Pro serial number (seems like I should be able to with the whole 'any time upgrade' deal)? Or do I have to go and find a 32bit pro disc to do the install? Are there any hoops that I have to jump through?

I'm interested in setting up a small site to host at home as a "proof of concept" exercise, i.e. to prrove that I know how to do it. I've got a (virtual) server 2003 machine with a site on it, all configured with port forwarding through to 80 on my server. I have a Belkin F5D7634 which I have put my DYNDNS details in but when I try to go to my DYNDNS address it comes up with the page cannot be displayed. My ISP is Carphone Warehouse/AOL and I've been unable to find any information if they block port 80. If they do, can anybody reccomend a home provider that does not block port 80? Regards, Tom.

• Can't mount home after trying to resize (bad geometry: block count exceeds size of device).

  This is on a fresh computer (super computer actually). It got to me with 15T on the home mount and 50G on the root. I tried allocating 7T to root and resizing (since I'm putting a local yum repo on this machine as it has no internet access nor will it ever). I tried following the instructions here: Centos 6.3 disk space allocation but something went wrong and the home won't mount again. Instead I get from dmesg | tail: EXT4-fs (dm-2): bad geometry: block count 4294967295 exceeds size of device (1342177280 blocks) df -h nets this output: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root 7.0T 3.6G 6.6T 1% / tmpfs 190G 216K 190G 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 485M 38M 422M 9% /boot I didn't have any files on /dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_home. Will simply running mke2fs fix it to be mountable? What sort of options should I run it with. I've never resized volumes before or used mke2fs. I don't want to make this mess worse.

• I'd like to archive files from Ubuntu to Windows between two computers on a shared home network

  I have an old laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 which I use as a LAMP environment for web development, and I have a comfortable, powerful desktop computer with Windows 7 installed on it. These two are connected to a home router so both can access the internet. I have been able to set up Samba so I can mount my Apache home directory so it is accessible from Windows and is mapped as a network drive. What I'd like to do is access some Windows folders from Linux so I could automatically create backups (with cron scripts) of my work to physically different locations on the Windows box. Perhaps at a later time I'd set up a local Subversion repository but I'd love to keep backups of that on the Windows drives too. Using Ubuntu's Places/Network menu I can see my desktop but I'm unable to log in to that despite having created the corrent username and password on Windows. All I can get is the following error message: "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." What could be misconfigurated?

• Disable OS X Portable Home Directories for specific hosts for all users, not just individuals?

  Would it be possible to block any and all Portable Home Directory services for specific hosts? Something like MCX's "MobileAccountNeverAsk-" but for the whole workstation? We have a network with both portable and stationary machines. I'd like our users to be able to use all machines, going portable on the MacBook but not being bothering with syncing when logged into stationary iMacs or Mac Pros.
