• How To Start NX/VNC Session At Ubuntu Boot Time?

  I want an NX or VNC session to start automatically when an Ubuntu server boots up - without a monitor connected - loading a certain user's desktop and keeping it loaded and ready until I log in via NX or VNC. How would one accomplish that? This code works via my terminal when I am logged in as the NX user, but not via root, and not in the init.d folder. No idea why? /usr/NX/bin/nxclient --session /home/user/.nx/config/SavedSession.nxs Please provide somewhat simplified instructions! I am certified linux newb.

In addition to monitoring the usual OS-level suspects (I/O, disk space, logs, CPU, RAM, swapping, etc.), we're also looking to monitor, alert and report on internal application events, conditions, and counters (think queue size for internal service, or latency of a service we're getting from a third party via custom APIs). We're started looking at Nagios, Zenoss, etc., but found out those do only low-level stuff, and are currently looking at MOM and ManageEngine. Still, they are far from being an custom app monitoring tool. So - do you have anything to suggest?

• VPN from Windows XP to OpenSwan: correct setup?

  Main question is what I am doing wrong in my OpenSwan or L2TP client setup? I am trying to create a Linux OpenSwan VPN connection from Windows XP machine, using preshared key and the builtin Windows XP L2TP IPsec option. I have followed the instructions in Linux Home networking Wiki for setting up OpenSwan and a guide to making it work with the Windows XP client, but am now stuck. The net setup is as follows: [my windows client, private IP A]<->[f/wall B]<-internet->[g/w X]<->[Linux OpenSwan server Y] A - private subnet /24 B - internet address X - internet address /24 Y - internet address on same subnet as X What I essentially want is for computer with A address to feel and work, as if it was in X subnet for purposes of outgoing and incoming TCP and UDP connections. I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III).   Hello, I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and I am using it was a portable but also desktop computer. In order to acheive this, i bought a VGA adapter and I am using it with an external mouse+keyboard+monitor. The problem is, the external keyboard layout is diferent from the one on the macbook. It is set to US qwerty (its a logitech G15), and because of that, most keys behave diferently from what they are supposed to. Question is, how can I set up diferent layouts at same time for diferent devices? I want US for external keyboard and PT for the default one.

• Windows screen shots via command-line SSH session

  I've browsed the handful of "screen capture" queries here, but I was unable to find anything which addressed my specific need. I'm looking for a command-line tool that I can run via remote SSH connection (by way of the cygwin sshd daemon). There are several to choose from, but the few I've tried (ImageMagick, nircmd, and MiniCap) all result in a blank screen. I assume that this is due to the remotely logged in user not having a proper graphical console session running. The goal here is automate screen capture and retrieval of the main system console (what one would see if they were looking at the physical monitor) through the use of ssh script from a Unix host: ssh user@windowshost "screencap --output /tmp/console.jpg" scp user@windowshost:/tmp/console.jpg /some/destdir Note that these must be done on demand, so polling a remote directory that has snapshots dumped periodically will not work. Bonus points for programs that are open source and have a portable install (so I don't need to RDP/VNC into the machine to run a graphical installer).

  The system is a PowerPC Mac Mini running MacOS Tiger 10.4.11. When I login (I'm the admin), everything seems fine - until about 10-15 minutes later. Then the system goes into sleep mode. Each time I try to wake the system up - I can barely log in before it goes to sleep again. Sometimes I don't have enough time to enter my password (from the screen saver). If I shut down and restart, then I have that 10-15 mins again - until it again goes to sleep. I checked the settings in the Displays and Energy System Prefs. I looked at Accounts and at Screen Saver System Prefs; no times seemed to be present. I've already reset the PROM and other things (as part of an earlier problem shooting session). If I don't log in at the desktop, things seem to be fine. Nothing in .profile, /etc/profile, or /etc/bashrc seems to stand out. Right now, the system is hardly usable; can someone help?   i've a problem on my windows 2008 server x64, and i cannot understand how can i solve it. i'm looking to Resource Monitor and see about 100 to 200 hard faults/sec. and generally the machine is slow. As i've readed a bit it is caused by a "memory Page" that is no longer available on physical memory and causes a io operations (disk) and it is a problem. The current hardware is a intel core2duo E8400 (3.0GHz) with 6GB RAM on a Windows Server Web 64-bit. Actually the machine have about 2GB Ram used what having 4Gb available to use, Why is the machine requires that high level of Disk operations? what can i do to increase the performance? Im experiencing a memory issues? what should be my starting point?

  I'd like to monitor NFS mounts and the NFS server process using Monit. On the server, I'd need a PID file, but I can't seem to find a way of getting that created with existing configuration files. Is there a way to do this, or has anyone monitored the server in a different way (checking if port 53 is active, etc). On clients, I was thinking of making Monit simply look for a specific file in an NFS mount, and if it's accessible, all is well. Problem is, if the NFS server does go down, file requests usually hang (perhaps even indefinitely, not sure). How would one get around this issue with monit? Any configuration examples would be greatly appreciated!

• A PDF viewer for large margins in fullscreen

  I am looking for a way to pleasantly read PDF files on my widescreen (22" 1680x1050) monitor. My problem with all pdf the PDF-viewer applications I have tried is that they do not handle wide and high margins well. If I go to fullscreen mode in my viewer and zoom in so that the extra margins are cropped, I can view the pages nicely, the annoyance however is that I have to reposition the pages every time I navigate to another page. I am sure there must be a way to make a PDF viewer that can solve this problem and perhaps there is one you know of? I am aware of something called PDF Reflow in Acrobat Reader but that only works with certain specific (tagged) files. I want a PDF viewer with a smarter zoom/next page function or an automatic margin-crop function. Is there such a thing?

• Needs free/ opensource network monitoring tool for office LAN

  I know there must be a lot similar questions on SU. Let me explain my setup first. I have 4-5 PC, Laptops and Few Android Phones in my office. To get them on a network , I have a UTStarCom, WA3002G1 ADSL2+ router with a landline broadband connection which has nothing to do with any PC except the configuration settings. Broadband channel is always on, we need to switch on the router and the internet is ready for us. No Internet Connection sharing is done via any PC. I have a limited 20GB monthly plan, which is consumed in 10-20 days, depending upon the download requirements. So in the above case, i need some suggestions from you: How do I monitor my Internet Bandwidth along-with the connected systems, realtime? Any free opensource tool available? Tweaks / Changes in PC to save bandwidth as my ISP do not have any Unlimited plan. PC and Laptops are Windows XP and/Or windows 7. Either of the platform tools are welcome.

• Enable CPU fan always on

  I am using 3 years old overheating laptop and I want my CPU fan to be spinning 24/7 regardless of the consequences. How to make it spin? The problem is that CPU & GPU heats up to 68°C (154 F) right after boot and never goes down, because CPU fan is not spinning full throttle. It starts spinning faster when temperature goes over 70°C and stops when it reaches seventy again. When doing heavy work on databases, it gets from 70 to 90 in no-time and automatically powers off. Bios does not contain any "fan spin 100%" options, just "spin slowly all the time" and "auto" which is more useless than the first one since my fan doesn't have pwm wire. Currently I'm solving this with cooling stand (3x5V), but it isn't much of a help. I would rather use the CPU fan since it is the only fan directly responsible for cooling down CPU/GPU. But how to make it spin 100% all the time? Should I attach it's red power wire to motherboard to get constant 5V (is there such option?), or is there an option to control it via software? Laptop: Samsung R528 2.3 GHz Intel i3 with Nvidia GeForce 310M Bios: Phoenix 03KT.M003.20100622.KSJ (and that is latest update) OS: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with 3.2.0.51 kernel CPU fan: Image/Description Has 5V 0,4A and only 3 pins, no pwm. P.S. Yes, I did clean everything with alcohol, freed the air vents, changed thermal paste etc; that reduced temperature by 4 degrees.

• SNMPD - passing values in a trap

  Im trying to create an SNMP setup to monitor 500-1K machines. Each will be joined to the SNMPTRAPD server via a VPN. When the client system sends its messages, it's sending its internal address instead of the VPN address even though the 'trapsync' command is using the VPN. This will be a problem as many of these system will have DHCP addresses based on location so there will be overlap. What I'd like to figure out is how to pass extra values with the trap so I can identify which system a given trap comes from.

• Is it normal for Java /Tomcat to keep checking for java_pid<nnnn>.hprof?

  I was monitoring my JVM running Apache Tomcat 6, running on Windows, and I noticed that every 3 seconds or so the JVM process (C:\Tomcat\bin\tomcat6.exe) is polling to see whether or not C:\Tomcatcat\java_pid3748.hprof exists, where 3748 is the Windows process ID. I haven't seen write to the hprof file, just test for existence. (I'm using Sysinternals Process Monitor (procmon.exe) for this monitoring. In procmon the polling shows up as a QueryDirectory operation, which always returns Result "NO SUCH FILE".) Is this normal, or is this a potential red flag? I gather that these hprof files are generated, perhaps among other times, when you enable the -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError Java flag. I haven't enabled it myself, though I guess it could be enabled somehow in the Tomcat startup scripts.

• My browsers won't use my full screen resolution, IE different

  My screen resolution is actually 3200x1800, but when I'm in a browser it acts like I have a smaller resolution. How do I get my browsers to use my full resolution? On Chrome it's using 1280x720, and on IE it's using 1600x900. According to whatismyscreenresolution.com, which is showing different values for different browsers. I took a screenshot of them and verified that my resolution is 3200x1800 as that is the pixels in the bitmap. I'm on a laptop with no monitor plugged in. My zoom in both browsers is at 100%. I've tried zooming out below 100% but then the text is unreadable and pixellated. I've tried restarting. Windows 8.1. I've tried the chrome extension OptiZoom and it does nothing. document.body.clientWidth gives 1247, and I want it to give 3200.

  Message is this: "Power supply surges detected during previous power on" "ASUS Auto-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply" When i went to sleep yesterday and woke up, when i moved the mouse to go back from screen saver, it didn't do anything. So i left it, i came back from class and got this issue. (I didn't restart before going to class... So the screen was left like it was) Today there was a power cut in half of my house. (Computer is on the side that it didn't cut...) Voltages are fine, like always. How do i remove message? It's just maybe sensor glitch? Even disabling the Anti-Surge my PC "shuts down" (Only monitor, but maybe components do too.)

• Why do SNMP agents need MIB files?

  After reading up on SNMP and some of the questions help here I think understand the agent role as a SNMP service to device (Like SQL, it is an API to storage). When you execute a SQL query the SQL engine does all the work and returns the result - You don't need to be aware of how the storage and where the storage is done. But MIBs are not actual storage , so what is the role of my agent? if the agent only register the MIB like i follow in this tutorial, is it not used as handler at all? Say that I want monitor my application's pending request queue, so I want an agent that all SNMP request for application_pending_request will be fired for it and it will return the queue depth. Why do I need to have an actual MIB when all I need to poll my application queue in order to get result?

I have been working on the helpdesk here for almost two years with another two years experience working it prior. While we are the first tier support we also work in AD, monitor and update certain servers and set up and deploy Windows/Mac images for those we support. What I am looking for here is what can I do to better myself to inside/outside places to move up this ladder? I take what I can from my job - working on projects that I can learn from - but what projects should I be volunteering for? What can I do for myself outside to make me a more viable candidate for a systems admin?

So I thought to schedule a cronjob to check supervisor is running, and eventually restart it.   I have a problem that is driving me to the edge. My graphics card periodically looses power for a moment, then comes back. Once in a while it takes much longer, like 5 minutes. I have always tried rebooting during that period, since I don't know then. Black screen, with a no power message across my monitor. All equipment is only a few months old. The Motherboard is a few months old, MSI N9A2 Platinum Revision 1 (AMD). The Video Card is a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 1GB. The power supply is an Ultra 700w My OS is Xp Pro, sp3 Any ideas or suggestions how to solve this

• How to open embedded Visio files with only Visio Viewer?

  For some bizarre reason Visio Viewer seems incapable of opening vsd files when they're embedded within a (2010) Excel document: However if I open the Excel document with 7-zip, browse to xl\embeddings, extract oleObject1.bin and rename it to a .vsd file extension it opens perfectly fine with Visio Viewer in Internet Explorer. Since this opens fine on a computer with the full Visio installed, my guess is it's trying to launch Visio rather than IE. Is there something I can do to fix this? I've been scanning with Process Monitor and searching with RegScanner comparing a Visio-installed system to a VisioViewer-installed system and there doesn't actually seem to be any sort of registry value giving direction here... maybe it's just the nature of OLE. (If it can't be fixed I'm okay with converting the extracted one to a .png or so to replace the embedded object, but the "solutions" I've found for vsd to image conversion are very poor or non-working, i.e. buggy code, code with Visio dependencies, or online services.)

• Saving a Word document as Web Page, Filtered drastically reduces image resolution

  I have a document with hundreds of images. When I save the first image (right click and save picture) it ends up with a good resolution as shown below: However, when I save the document as Web Page, Filtered, all the images end up really low-res. Here's the exact same image afterwards: I've tried the following options in the Save As dialog with no luck: In Tools > Web Options... > Pictures > Target Monitor I've set the Pixels Per Inch to the highest value, 120. In Tools > Compress Pictures > Target Output I've set it to Print (220 ppi). Any ideas would be appreciated.
