I setup Net Limiter , for look which programs using my internet connection. But there isn't any weird program. There is only firefox.exe . • How do anti-viruses work?

  So I was thinking about viruses recently, and wondering how exactly antiviruses keep up? Considering anybody who'd been coding for a few weeks could hack together something do do nasty, nasty things to somebody's PC, the quantity alone would make a simple list of hashes prohibitive, so how do antiviruses do it? Do they monitor process activity and have a 3 strikes rule for doing virus-like things? And if so, what's stopping it from triggering on perfectly harmless things (like me moving files around in \system32)? I did a bit of googling, but the regular places didn't particularly help, and I couldn't find a dupe here, so I thought it'd be good to ask :)

• Dell Latitude E6420 dual-boot Ubuntu + Windows 7 Optimus graphics problems

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors? • Advice on Computer Specs for overall development/general use machine

  At the moment I am restricted to a laptop with 512MB of RAM, a 120GB HDD and a 1.5GHz Intel processor for all my development and general browsing needs, and as you can probably tell using it for anything modern is a painful experience. As a result I've decided to buy myself a new desktop computer, one that will stand the test of time and one that can be upgraded easily. Rather than build the machine myself I've decided to go through Dell as I've had good experiences with them when purchasing computers for my family.   I want to run some test on hardware level. My goal is to create or find a way to control one computer from another down to BIOS settings changing. For example: Master computer sends a signal for slave to restart and opens BIOS settings dialog. Master computer sends a signal to slave to change BIOS parameters and then restart. Then slave fully boots up master starts up some software on slave. Then software finishes operations cycle continues till certain conditions are met. I know that I am looking for a complex thing but mainly what I need are correct keywords because now I am being flooded by BIOS configurations tutorials. Main concerns: Is it possible without using any custom tailer chip? How can master monitor salve`s hardware activity? How to let master handled more than one slave? • Motherboard warning lights when plugging in a display port cord to graphics card?

  Earlier today, my computer spontaneously shut itself off and refused to turn back on. I tested my PSU and it's operating fine. I unplugged everything and let it sit for a while and it started to make a high pitched coil whine/hiss. When I came back an hour later and plugged in only the power cord, it turned on without any issues. After some troubleshooting, I noticed my motherboard (Intel D975XBX2) has a red CPU led and VR led that come on whenever I plug my monitor into my graphics card via display port. DVI does not cause a similar issue. I was running three monitors off the card, so I need both DVI ports and the display port working. Is it likely my graphics card needs to be replaced, or should I be looking elsewhere to resolve this issue?

• Brand new Seagate HDD has high raw read error rate

  I've just purchased a brand new Seagate ST31000524AS 1TB HDD. Manufacture date shows as January 2012 (yes that's as new as new can get), so must be one of the new batches from the post-flood Thailand. Anyway, I downloaded a copy of Active Hard Disk Monitor tool to check the S.M.A.R.T. parameters and I find the parameter Raw Read Error Rate is very low. Should I be worried? Will this rectify over time? This hdd is just 7 hours old; what gives? Edit: I meant high raw read error rate - Title updated accordingly

• How to convert Kindle books into PDF format?

  I'm new to digital books and I use the Kindle app for Windows to read the books I bought but I hate how I can't read the bottom paragraph of a book in the Kindle app in the centre of the monitor; I have to bend my neck down and it gets sore fast. Problem is that I can't move the Kindle book page up or halfway as when I'm reading a PDF document; if you try to move the page in Kindle it skips to the next new page. So, I thought maybe converting my books to PDF will solve the problem. How do I convert Kindle books into the PDF format? Does anyone have another solution?   I am trying to setup zsh so that it shares command history between different zsh sessions: in multiple tabs in multiple gnome-terminals in different screen sessions I have put this in .zshrc #To save every command before it is executed (this is different from bash's history -a solution): setopt inc_append_history #To retrieve the history file everytime history is called upon. setopt share_history but that does not work. e.g. I type 1 command: gedit afile and then I go to and zsh and type history. • What is a good solution for an adaptive iptables daemon?

  I am running a series of web servers and already have a pretty good set of firewall rules set up, however I'm looking for something to monitor the traffic and add rules as needed. I have denyhosts monitoring for bad SSH logins, and that's great - but I'd love something I could apply to the whole machine that would help prevent bute force attacks against my web applications as well, and add rules to block IPs that display evidence of common attacks. I've seen APF, but it looks as though it hasn't been updated in several years. Is it still in use and would it be good for this? Also, what other solutions are out there that would manipulate iptables to behave in some adaptive fashion? I'm running Ubuntu Linux, if that helps.

• Missing 16:10 resolutions with Nvidia drivers (Can't add resolutions)

  Hello, I have a laptop with a Nvidia 9650M GT and used the drivers that Seven brought me. It works fine but Metro 2033 tells me that i have to upgrade my drivers to play the game. So i did it. But since i did a clean install of the new Nvidia drivers, i just have 1440*900 or 4:3 resolutions. I usually played with 1280*800 or 1184*740 (for performance issue) With the "old" drivers i was able to create custom resolution (1184*740) in Nvidia control panel but now when i try it tells me that "my monitor cannot support this resolution". When i insist, it works but soon as i shut down my computer i have to recreate it.. Do anyone have a fix ? Thank you

When writing to an NFS mount of the NAS, rsync claims a very high transfer speed for each file and then waits a long time before acknowledging that everything has finished. The total time taken is consistent with the QoS limit and the time taken by the same transfer over FTP. Why does the write to the NFS mount report higher transfer speeds than are actually happening over the network? How can I monitor the actual bandwidth of the transfer?

• Unable to extend desktop

  I'm trying to hook up my TV to my computer as a gaming/multimedia center but I'm having troubles setting it up. I have a custom built machine running Windows 7 RC. It has an ATI Radeon 4800 video card with 2 dvi output and 1 S-video output. I have an s-video to composite adapter that connects to my tv. (It's an old TV with only Cable, composite, and s-video connections). I can switch the desktop to my TV without a problem, but I can't duplicate or extend my desktop onto it. I've installed the latest drivers and Catalyst Control Center, but it won't let it work any more readily than Windows would. Any suggestions? Would using an s-video cable instead of the adapter change anything? (The only reason I use the adapter is because it came with the graphics card) (Edit) I installed the latest drivers and I can now duplicate the screen (show on one monitor and on the TV), but I still can't extend the desktop.

  We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers. Must haves: Web Interface RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist. Good cataloguing of media. Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface). We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee. Nice to have: Ability to play music videos onto a monitor Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC. Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered. I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

• Lock Windows keyboard and mouse but still display screen normally

It displays important information related to the business, I'd rather that random users that walk in can't just walk over to it and start using the computer with the same access rights as the user the monitoring software is running as. What I would like is if any time someone presses a button on the keyboard including alt-ctrl-delete all that would appear is a dialog asking for a password. Then I can click cancel and it will return to showing the data I want displayed. ClearLock doesn't work I tried it btw

• Remote desktop solution for controlling a remote OS X machine in Linux

  The "server" (the host I'm trying to connect to) is Snow Leopard. The "client" is Ubuntu 10.04. I want something like a remote desktop server running on OS X that I can connect to and control from the Linux machine. Something cheap or free would be best. Something that always runs on the OS X machine so that I never have to attach a monitor or a keyboard. I don't want to use VNC, because, well, VNC sucks over this network. Any ideas?

• RDP locks up login, doesn't unlock on Windows

  From time to time, my system, when I try to login TRHOUGH or AFTER a remote connection, locks up the login session. I can't login anymore, the screen turns black (the monitor is still active, the image is black). Especially in the recent case, the system did not come back from the lock-up, and I had to reset the computer. Any idea what might be the issue here? More information: Both Computers are Windows 7, The RDP Server has a wired connection, the Client has either Wireless or Wired. The network card involved on the server is a "Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)" card built-in on an ASRock Mainboard. I'm using either local LAN or internet connection through NAT/Router.

• Bios wont post unless I restart power supply.

  I have an annoying problem with a computer. The BIOS wont post after it has been turned off and started again unless I turn the switch off/on on the power supply. The fans, cdrom hdd and everything starts running but the bios never beeps and the monitor stays black. I HAVE TRIED: reinstalling windows xp, flashed bios to latest, cmos clear, new power supply, other hdd, new memory sticks, graphics card. I also removed the motherboard from the computer case and laid it on a cardboard box and only connected the PSU, RAM and CPU. Other than this the computer works great but its annoying having to off/on the power supply switch before turning it on after its been off. My guess is that the motherboard is faulty but I would just like to hear what you guys think. Sorry for my english / Remy

• What are my X client options for MS Windows?

  I need to connect to a headless X Windows server (running on Ubuntu) from my MS Windows 7 computer over a 100 Mbit network. I could use VNC (or any other remote viewer) but the 3D graphics performance would be lousy I imagine. I used to have it hooked up to a monitor, but that's broken now and I can't afford a new one. A friend advised that I could try and use an X client, and that the 3D graphics wont suffer too much over 100 Mbit. Cygwin seems to be an option, but I was wondering if there were any more lightweight options.
