• Windows 2008 R2 DS in 2003 domain?

  Hi, Having a master domain controller running Windows 2003, and now I'd like to set up a new domain controller on a branch office. I really only have access to licenses for Windows 2008 R2 (through licensing.microsoft.com), so question is if a newly installed Windows 2008 Standard R2 can become a domain controller in the existing (2003) domain? First I tried adprep /forestprep on the newly installed 2008, but it complained about not being a domain controller. I then tried dcpromo, but it too complained about it. According to MS documentation, it seems I have to run 'adprep /forestprep' on the master domain controller, and adprep is located in 2008 installation DVD. Am I on the right track? Is the correct way to mount the 2008 installation dvd into the existing 2003 master controller, and run 'adprep /forestprep' on it there? Will I be able to run dcpromo on the 2008 once that has been completed? Thanks,

• Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

  I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. Thanks for your input!

• Visio 2013 - how to rotate the entire page?

  I would like to rotate an entire page, including all of the shapes and text on it. I see here that you can supposedly hold down Control and click-drag the corner of the page to do it: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/visio-help/rotate-a-page-HP085050946.aspx ... however I can't get this to work. Hovering over the corner does nothing initially, and when I hold Control the cursor becomes a scale/resize icon, rather than a rotate icon (per the MS article I linked to above). I have tried other modifier key combinations while hovering, but nothing seems to produce the rotate icon mentioned.

  Hello, I have 2 client compters running XP and MS office with Outlook 2007. I have a 2003 server running exchange. Clients e-mail account was removed on clients computer. But the e-mails are still on server as I see the mailbox with approx 14k of mail How do I restore the e-mail account on clients and retrieve the e-mail from server. I did not set up the outlook or exchange, so I do not know the e-mail settings. Any help? Chris

• Winxp system context menus blank after last security update

  Because of a CERT advisory of several out-of-band security updates released by MS I did a Critical Updates pass on my WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I now have the situation where it seems that all of my WinXP-generated menus come up with all items black. If I wave the cursor over the menu, the items will update as they become active (go blue) and then update correctly (to black-text-on-white-background) as they go non-active. Separators (which never get a hover event) stay black. App-level context menus seem to work fine (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc.) with the exception of Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer, which both exhibit this behavior on both their context menus and on their menu bar drop down menus. I'm assuming that's true because they are all using the same library code. Thoughts? Fixes? Help!

• xDebug on Zend Server CE under Windows XP

  I have Zend Server installed on my Windows XP development machine, installed when I was naive and didn't know that Eclipse was going to become so suck so badly for PHP development. I've made the upgrade to Netbeans, but for debugging they only support xDebug. To be fair I've never used "proper" debuggers before, but other folks have raved about them so I thought I'd give it a try. I followed some directions on the Zend forum about how to install xDebug on Zend server, disabling Zend Debugger in the process. The xDebug "custom installation instructions" wizard tells me that my PHP was compiled with an unsupported compiler (MS VC8), and won't let me download anything. I tried a couple of the other xDebug binaries, but they just refused to load. So I'm left without a debugger option. Does anyone know how I can change the compiler of the php version I have installed so I can use a debugger in Netbeans? or how else i can get xDebug to install on Zend Server?

For example <Description> <![CDATA[ <i> ]]> </Description> Gets converted to <Description> <i> </Description> Is there any way to preserve the CDATA section while editing in MS Word. • Inserting a very long Excel table into Word

  I have a very long excel (2003) s/sheet with in excess of 600 rows that I want to paste into an MS Word document (also 2003). However, I want to ensure that: 1) The header row appears automatically at the top of each page. 2) The s/sheet automatically formats to the correct page width (the one I have is slightly wider than my Word page). This can obviously be done manually by cutting and pasting each page seperately but this is very laborious and time consuming and I once saw somebody achieve this automatically (maybe with a macro) but have been unable to locate them, or the methodology.   I'm using MS Office Outlook 2007. I check my "Junk E-mail" folder ~once a month. This time I found that my whole google groups correspondence is there. I right-clicked a message and pressed "Add sender to safe senders list". Hopefully, the future messages to this group will be delivered to my inbox. The problem is with the messages that are already in the junk folder. Is there a way to resort my junk folder automatically, to have e-mails from senders listed on my safe list being recovered from the junk folder and moved to e.g. Inbox folder ? Thanks in advance.

• Access losing db connections

  I have a weird problem going on at work. People have been using MS Access to connect to sql server db and lately people are getting sporadic problems with connecting to the servers. It's not always the same users and it's not always a problem, which makes it a real pain to try to solve. One example of a related problem. A person has a linked table to a table and she would filter the table or write a query on the table to return where itemsku = 'ABCD1234'. It would return one record but the ItemSku LMKN7486 and everytime it would return the wrong record but consistently the wrong record so itemsku abcd1234 always returned LMNK7486 One would think it might be a driver problem, but it also could be a user problem. Just posting the question to see if anyone else has had similar senerios. Thanks

• Simple, user friendly and strong file encryption in Windows

  I want a colleague of mine to send me a sensitive MS-Word document via e-mail. Since Word's encryption is questionable, I would like to encrypt the file using a passphrase. Do you know of any user-friendly encryption tool that a novice user can easily use? I wouldn't like to prompt for keys or anything like this - just provide simple interface for single file encryption. EDIT: I have solved this using Putty Secure Copy, through a Linux box I have somewhere. The user downloaded scp to the same directory where the file was, and I have send him the exact scp command by mail. Nice! • Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this.   Before deploying a Azure VM Role, we need to perform %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown But in my case the sysprep fails with the log file %windir%\system32\sysprep\Panther\setuperr.txt saying: 2012-07-05 08:03:57, Error [0x0f0073] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:Not running DLLs; either the machine is in an invalid state or we couldn't update the recorded state, dwRet = 31 2012-07-05 08:03:57, Error [0x0f00ae] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup external providers; hr = 0x8007001f I do not always want to create a new image. Is there any work around? I followed the instructions in MS support here and tried: %windir%\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:.\unattend.xml It did not work. Under certain circumstances, I need to tear down the VM Image from azure and re-deploy with some more changes. So sysprep has to run almost twice every week.

• ntpstat response fine but server time out of sync

  Hi, I found out that the ntpd service that I've set up a few weeks ago on a Centos5 machine doesn't correctly synchronize the server time. I detected an offset of more than 5 minutes (by stopping ntpd and executing ntpdate). After setting up the service I checked the setup via ntpstat: [xxxx@xxx ~]$ ntpstat -q synchronised to local net at stratum 11 time correct to within 10 ms polling server every 1024 s I repeated this check every day and it always showed this output. Doesn't this output tell me that the server time is sane?

• Reinstallation version Windows 7?

  I ordered a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit os online and just received a DVD & Key Code sticker. The DVD label shows it to be a reinstallation DVD, Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Dell branded and states that the DVD is only to be used to reinstall the OS on a Dell PC. I built this PC & it previously has had XP Pro installed for the last several years. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with some Malware & made the mistake of attempting to reinstall the XP Pro only to find out that MS has locked out my key, the same one I have been using on this built PC for the last 3 years. The previous PC was built by a local PC builder & I just reinstalled the OS on the new system. Should I send this Win7 DVD back to where I bought it, or can I use it? What a mess, Thanks DWB

• Why does a group policy not applied to the domain administrator account?

  I have a working policy on my entire domain. I just found out, when logging with the domain administrator, that this policy is not applied (EDIT: Running : gpresult shows that the GPO's are applied - but, this GPO is for Drive Mappings, and the actual drive mappings are NOT shown) The administrator account - does not have any login script on his profile tab. My GPO's are mainly small/atomic settings: single GPO to handle each settings: UAC, Firewall, printers. GPO status for the object is enabled That's an overview of the Drive Maps: Reading on MS support site, I checked the delegation tab, and it is marked as applied to domain and enterprise admins. Every user gets these policies correctly. The OU that is set is the root of the domain. (for testing purpose - I did that to eliminate hierarchy issues - did not help) Block Inheritance is disabled. • Email not working on testing site in Plesk before DNS switch

  I have to test my website before my DNS is swtiched to the new server. My New server is having Plesk. I changed my hosts file to point to the new server and I tested the site. My Site is working fine. However, When I try to register I have 2 emails sent one to the user and one to the admin. Admin email id is same as the server name for example my site name is test.com the admin email is [email protected]. So email is not sent to the admin. I know the email is not sent because the Plesk his searching its own dns instead of Global public DNS. Do any one know how to make my site see public DNS on sending email in Plesk. If I set Goole Public DNS 8.8.8.8 for MS record will it work.. Please guide me. Thanks in advance..

• SQL Server Agent 2005 job runs but provides no output

• Exposing Exchange 2010 OWA via Cisco ASA 5520

  Has anyone experience with exposing the web access (OWA) of an Exchange 2010 server through a Cisco ASA (my goal is to something like a DMZ)? If so could you give me some advice? I know that Exchange doesn't support DMZ and that MS recommends using TMG. Still, I'd like to know if someone has managed this (I've tried and wasn't very successsful so far). Or would it be better to ditch (read: sell) the ASA and use a TMG server instead? We're completely on Windows Server 2008 R2 and some remaining 2003 server running mostly as file servers. We don't use the VPN features much at the moment but plan on doing that in the future, but OWA should be there if VPN is not possible from outside. Thank you very much!

  I have formatted Canyon CN-MP4A USB flash drive with Disk Utility on Mac and now it is not recognized on any Mac or Windows machine. I have formatted with Disk Utility > drive > Erease > Format > MS-DOS (FAT). Now when I plug it in any Mac or Windows machine, nothing happens. Like nothing is plugged in. It has a screen, and I was able to format it directly from the device before, but now when I turn it on, welcome screen appears, but nothing else. I can not get to the menu. Is there a way I can format it? I am looking for the answer on the internet, but no luck so far.

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech? • Word mergefield wildcard not correctly matching

  Hello, Below is my mergefield code: { IF { MERGEFIELD Subs_State } = "GA" "blah blah" "{ IF { MERGEFIELD CEOrgStates } = "GA" "blah blah" ""} "} I'm pulling records from a MS Access db. My goal is to check whether a record has Subs_State field matching "GA", or the CEOrgStates has the word "GA" (some records have stuff like "|FL|CA|GA|CT|KY|" (no quotes)). When I merged the docs, Word doesnt seem to be able to match with the wildcards: If I use and compare "*GA" (fields ending with GA), it works; however, the double wildcards "*GA*" dont seem to work at all. Here are the things I’ve tried: Have data in lowercase, then compare with lowercase Have data in lowercase, convert to and then compare with uppercase Do the opposite of the above 2 with uppercase data Use “*GA*” and “*ga*” (no pipe) Use different delimiters Nothing seems to work with the double wildcard matching. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

• Accidentally replaced the partition table using GParted in UBUNTU

  Hello, This machine has UBUNTU & wINDOWS XP. I'm currently logged into UBUNTU. I was just checking the features of GParted and accidentally clicked Device > Create Partition Table. A default MS-DOS partition table is created. Now if I re-start the Gparted there is nothing. Its showing entire disk as UNALLOCATED space. Lucky thing is All the drives (C:, D:, E:) are currently mounted and I'm in UBUNTU. I guess its possible to re-create the partition table using current status. But I don't know how? Can any one kindly tell me how to do this. This is a lab computer. If its not recoverable. I'm completely screwed!!

• List of objects or parallel arrays of properties?

  The question is, basically: what would be more preferable, both performance-wise and design-wise - to have a list of objects of a Python class or to have several lists of numerical properties? I am writing some sort of a scientific simulation which involves a rather large system of interacting particles. For simplicity, let's say we have a set of balls bouncing inside a box so each ball has a number of numerical properties, like x-y-z-coordinates, diameter, mass, velocity vector and so on. How to store the system better? Two major options I can think of are: to make a class "Ball" with those properties and some methods, then store a list of objects of the class, e. g. [b1, b2, b3, ...bn, ...], where for each bn we can access bn.x, bn.y, bn.mass and so on; to make an array of numbers for each property, then for each i-th "ball" we can access it's 'x' coordinate as xs[i], 'y' coordinate as ys[i], 'mass' as masses[i] and so on; To me it seems that the first option represents a better design. The second option looks somewhat uglier, but might be better in terms of performance, and it could be easier to use it with numpy and scipy, which I try to use as much as I can. I am still not sure if Python will be fast enough, so it may be necessary to rewrite it in C++ or something, after initial prototyping in Python. Would the choice of data representation be different for C/C++? What about a hybrid approach, e.g. Python with C++ extension?
