  • Ivy bridge i3 recognized as Xeon e3-1200

    The situation: I've got a Ivy bridge i3 3225 which is being recognized as a Xeon e3-1200 series cpu by Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. The problem: cpu fan makes more noise than necessary (under dual-boot Win8 the fans are off), cannot install the intel graphics drivers from 01.org. Goals: - find a fix for the load fans could be they are not CPU related, I've tried some fan controller packages, but they made no difference. - get the intel graphics to install (this now fails as xeon cpu's are not supported, I got the package working on a i5 laptop) - get to know some more about how hardware recognition works Tried so far: - a reinstall of Ubuntu, but it was recognized again as a Xeon cpu. - different fan control packages, but they either do not recognized the fans, or just keep fan speed to high.   • Can't repeatedly reload uwsgi

    In Ubuntu 12.04 I can only reload my uwsgi app once, after this reload and force-reload fail. This appears to be because after the first reload the process names change from uwsgi to uwsgi-core, and the reload script looks for uwsgi processes with specific pids. I'm not sure if this is just a bug, and if so is there somewhere sensible for me to report it? Otherwise is there something I could be doing wrong to cause this?

  • Custom mesh format - yea or nay?

    In the process of writing my game prototype, I have found the OBJ format to be insufficient for my needs - it does not support any sort of animation, it doesn't support triangle strips (I'm targeting my ancient hardware). MD2 wouldn't fit the bill because it doesn't have support for named model pieces. MD3 would probably work, but like OBJ, it doesn't have support for triangle strips. Considering the limitations of the formats above, I've come to the conclusion that it may be necessary to write my own format to accommodate my requirements, but that feels like reinventing the wheel. So, I need a format which can specify indexed tri-strips, supports textures, UV-mapping, collision data, can have multiple named segments and supports animations (have I forgotten anything?). Is there any format like that which already exists, or do I have to write my own?

However, before I can make 3D games, I need to learn 3D modeling for character design, level design, and some animation. What is the easiest 3D modeling software, compatible with Unity3d? I do not want to spend too much time learning the software. From what I've heard, Blender is a bit complicated to use. Maya and 3dsMax seem very powerful.   • Sun & Moon Movement

    I'm creating a 2D HTML5 Canvas Game and am stuck on how to go about animating my Sun & Moon. The current setup is basically setting the moon at -1024 on the X-axis and the sun at 0 and animating them at 1 pixel a second. My canvas width is 1024 pixels and whenever the sun/moons X position crosses over the width of the canvas, it's X position is then set to -1024 to repeat the animation. What I am trying to do is get it to sync up with my day/night cycles. Each day is 10000 ticks long (A tick being added every frame) with Day/Night being 50% each (5000 ticks each). What I am trying to calculate is what I'll need to add to the X position of each per frame to get the sun from an X of 0 to 1024 after 5000 ticks/frames. Any help is appreciated.

    I have an HP Compaq dc7900 Convertible Minitower from 2006: 80GB (3.5”) SATA 3.0GB/s with NCQ and Smart IV Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 I can install Ubuntu on it from a USB stick and everything seems to work fine, but when I finish and reboot the pc, grub will be shown but When I continue I get just a black screen with a blinking cursor I tried Linux Mint and OpenSuse as well but it seems there is something forbidden in the Bios. Installing Windows 8 works fine.
