  • Why can't I boot from portable HD?

    I've been trying to get Ubuntu 10.04-LTS 32-bit desktop installed onto a 250GB FreeAgent Go drive from Seagate. I've been able to install onto a USB flash drive and boot successfully from this. I have installed Ubuntu onto the jump drive using Universal USB Installer, and this was a total success in terms of getting Ubuntu to run off a flash drive. I was unable to accomplish this with the portable HDD. I then, following instructions, attempted to install the OS onto the HDD once booted up from the flash drive. After installing the OS on the HDD, the computer would simply not load the OS when the HDD medium was selected for booting from. However, as there is no System-> Preferences-> Removable Drives and Media I could not complete this step. Is this vital? How do I do this under Ubuntu 10.04? I have formmated the MBR on the HDD and repeated the above, still with no success. I have also browsed some forums that mention there may be something related to spin-up speeds, but nothing explained in detail the issue or how to solve it, and I'm not familiar enough with system booting to understand if this could be an issue. Basically, what I'm trying to do is get Ubuntu to boot off the HDD, I've attempted several things, and the result is, after selecting the HDD from BIOS, the OS never starts booting (after waiting upwards of ten minutes). I just have a white cursor blinking. I can always get it to boot from the jump drive. Related question

Here is output of 'vainfo' command: libva: VA-API version 0.32.0 libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0 libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so libva: va_openDriver() returns -1 vaInitialize failed with error code -1 (unknown libva error),exit I have Catalyst 12.6 driver installed (from debs). Also I've fixed switchable graphics bug, using this guide (STEP 2). I've tried to add 'LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=xvba LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/va/drivers' to /etc/environment and rebooted system, but the result was the same. PLEASE HELP! :) Thanks! :]

  • HD 6770M low graphics mode after update (AGAIN)

    I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (re)installed on this laptop: I've also installed the fglrx-drivers for my ATI card (using apt-get),it appeared to work fine,that is until i updated my distro. Once again i got the "low graphics mode" error when i booted into the new kernel,booting in the old kernel works fine however. When i look into the logs i see "no screen found". This is the second time i install Ubuntu and the second time i run into problems with my graphics. Reinstalling isn't a solution since the problem keeps comming back. My question now is: does anyone know a REAL solution for this issue ar at least knows what's causing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I took 50 gigs of space and partitioned it off in windows. I then removed rights from any user with access to the computer as it is part of a domain. I'm not pc literate enough to know exactly which options to select in order to install ubuntu into the partition. I do not know which selections to make for the otions that are shown on the partition window during the installation process. If anyone could inform me how to correctly do this it would be much appreciated !

  • Impossible to create/format install window 7 on unpartioned HD

    Hi guys i am getting nut reinstalling windows 7 on one of those Acer aspire all-in-one... The original OS(windows professional x64) was not starting, after the initial screen the bios was prompted. So step 1: i tried to access the system partition and reinstall everything but could not get at the point step 2: i set the bios to native ide and i tried to insert my original copy of windows professional and do a clean installation, but it does not allow me to format/create other partion form the installation mask step 3: my BAD, i tried to install ubuntu and i clean the whole hard drive, i was getting an error at some point during installation so i decided to get back to windows step 4: Windows 7 again, at the disk screen of the windows installation i entered into the prompt and played around with DISKPART... -i listed the disk and the HD was disk 0. -i selected disk 0. -i CLEAN disk 0 successfully. -i tried to create a CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY but gave an error cache corrupt and disk not up-to-date (after i try to create a partiton in disk 0 it disappear when i try LIST DISK and i have to restart before he can list DISK 0 again, RESCAN did not worked). -tried CLEAN ALL(2 hours) and succeeded. -try again to create primary partition and failed, same errors -try to install my old copy of windows xP pro and it seems to work, it create a partition, format(only quick worked, slow mode was at 0% after 1 hour so i stop), it start installing and around 90% installation said it could not copy a file and he stop -back on windows 7 again, it says that the hard drive has 490+gb unpartitioned but won't create a partition and format. -i tried again DISKPART as i though i messed up with the MBR when i installed ubuntu, so i did all of the instruction below http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864-mbr-restore-windows-7-master-boot-record.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 the errors were: on bootsect: the systne partiton was not found, Data error cyclic redundancy check on bootrec /FixMbr: A device attached to the system is not functioning but did not worked, and still can not partiton/format/install on a blank HD i tried some bootable clean disk tool and start infinite loop on the same errors the bios setting are: sata: native ide. if i put AHCL(or something like that does not load the HD and the DVD). quick start/quite start: disabled. Are there any other option or tools i can try before i try change the HD(That is my last option)? Thanks to everyone.

  • External USB HD issues with a twist (works on Windows7 but not XP)

    I have this older external USB HD, 160 GB. I was using it to copy my Steam games to another computer. On the source computer, Windows 7 64-bit, everything worked fine. Drive reported no errors, had no hiccups, etc. Plugging it into the Windows XP 32-bit computer, it worked fine for looking through the files, moving files around on it (no real reading/writing, just modifying the filesystem table). However, when copying files from it to my internal HD, after a couple seconds to tens of minutes (seemingly random times), the USB device becomes unrecognized and it reports a delayed write error. Events in system log go like this, chronologically: (number times displayed)xSource (Event ID): "message" 2xdisk (51): An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. 1xftdisk (57): The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur. 1xApplication popup (26): Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. 1xntfs (50): {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. These repeat for a while, then there is 10+ disk messages or ftdisk messages. Other notes: This occurs on random files at random times. This problem cannot be replicated on the Windows 7 source machine when copying from the HD to a different location on its local disk chkdsk /f was run and found no errors. chkdsk /f/r has the delayed write issue. drive was set to quick removal. Setting to performance in device manager yielded same result I am not writing anything to the USB external drive, so I am not sure why there is even a delayed write error (writing file access times?) local Windows XP was chkdsk'd without problems Windows XP machine has no problems with other USB HD's Various USB ports were attempted Rebooting did not help Occurs with SyncToy as well as windows explorer SMART status is good on both local drive and the external one Lack of gaming is making me cranky

    I have decided to get a new Dell Studio 15 laptop. They have an option of adding a "ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570, 512MB" card for an extra $100 instead of the included "Intel HD Graphics" card. How do the two compare? The laptop comes with an Intel Core i3 processor, maybe the Intel graphics card would be more compatible with the processor since they're made by the same manufacturer?     I am running Debian Squeeze on an old Dell Dimension 8300 box. It has an AGP Radeon HD 4650 card. I use this machine to mine bitcoins, and today I noticed that the machine had rebooted! My precious uptime! Anyway, my miner wouldn't start, so I figured might as well update my graphics driver, maybe that would fix the issue. I went to amd.com and downloaded the newest driver (12.6 legacy), but after installing it, aticonfig gave an error: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected I uninstalled the driver and figured I'd try to install it from apt. AMD has dropped support for the HD 4000 series in fglrx, forcing me to use fglrx-legacy-driver (currently only in experimental). In order to install this, I had to update libc6 (and some other important packages, like gcc), I had to use their wheezy versions. I finally got fglrx-legacy-driver installed, but I still got: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected Why isn't the driver finding my video card? I have a hunch it has something to do with the fact that it's an AGP video card. Here is the output of lspci -v (why does it say Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci?): 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV730 Pro AGP [Radeon HD 4600 Series] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 0028 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 16 Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] I/O ports at de00 [size=256] Memory at fe9f0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Expansion ROM at fea00000 [disabled] [size=128K] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3 Capabilities: [58] AGP version 3.0 Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci EDIT: fglrx 12.4 seems to work. Thing is, since I am on kernel 3.2, I need to apply this patch to common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.c. I thought ATI dropped support for the 4xxx series after 12.4. Why doesn't 12.6 legacy work?

  • Weird "missing" CD/DVD driver during Windows Server 2008 installation

    Hi. We have an old PowerEdge 860 that we're trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 onto. At present the machine doesn't have any OS installed, so we're doing a clean install from a DVD. Pretty simple stuff. The problem is that, although the installation process starts off well (asking for language and locale settings), as soon as we click "Install Now" we're told "A required CD/DVD device driver is missing." The operating system has already booted from our only DVD drive(!). I've seen other people complain about this problem (usually in relation to installing Vista or Windows 7) but I've not found a 100% solution yet. (Our DVD drive is a Hitachi LG GWA-4400N, salvaged from an old laptop. There have never been any drivers released for this device, nor any firmware updates.) The most promising lead I have is from someone claiming that Windows is actually asking for a driver for the ATAPI/IDE Controller here. UPDATE See my answer below... It was most likely a corrupt download. (*shame*) I will update this question when I know for sure.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Install DVD Wont Start

    Hi, Excuse such a basic question... I am a Laptop Fixer and deal with Windows based laptops only but very recently took in a 13" MacBook Pro for a re-install of the OS (easy I thought!) I inserted the Install DVD, held the C button and turn on. I could hear the disk spinning up and after about a min the DVD is ejected. There are a few scratches on the DVD but should be ok as not that deep. However, Windows Vista was installed (it failed to install properly hence the re-install of Mac OS). Should I wipe clean and format the hard disk first? Could this be the reason the DVD is ejected? Any advice would be gratefully accepted? p.s. never held a MacBook Pro before... first impressions, wow... alu casing and massive touch pad... and the magnetic power socket.... so impressed and it doesn't even work!

  • Remote NX login to Ubuntu, Gnome can't mount CD/DVD drive

    Even though I'm sitting next to it, I log into my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system via NX Free Edition from another system at the moment (this is temporary, not worth buying a KVM for). Curiously, though, when I do that Gnome's auto-mounting fails for CD/DVD media (I haven't tried other kinds) with a "Not Authorized" error. For instance here's what happens when I put the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation CD in: This does not happen if I log into it locally (not via NX) with the same user account. When using NX, I can mount the media if I go to mount directly: tjc@midnight:~$ sudo mkdir /media/dvd tjc@midnight:~$ sudo mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /media/dvd tjc@midnight:~$ ls /media/dvd autorun.inf casper dists install isolinux md5sum.txt pics pool preseed README.diskdefines ubuntu wubi.exe ...which, along with the "not authorized" error, suggests some kind of permissions problem to me (doh). What I find odd is that the same user is involved in both cases (local and via NX). I'm new to Ubuntu on the desktop (used it and other distros on servers for years), so I'm afraid I don't know how this auto-mounting is happening. I think it's handled by the gvfs package and its daemon, but that's about as far as I got (and perhaps I've taken a left turn even getting that far). Although I can work around it with mount, does anyone know how I might get auto-mounting to work?

  • Unable to boot with Windows 2008 DVD / USB Key

    Hi everyone, I am trying to install Windows 2008 server on a HP Proliant DL180 G5. There is no built-in DVD reader so I need to use my LaCie USB one. When I put the CD in and boot from the USB DVD on the server, I get the error message: Boot Failed! Please insert boot media in selected boot device. So I tried with another Windows bootable CD and still no luck. What I've done then, I copied the installation DVD on my 16go USB key. Again, impossible to boot from the USB Key. I have 2 147go SAS 15k HDD on my server. They are not showing in the Bios. I was wondering if this is a reason why nothing will boot on it. I am trying to find a way to deploy Windows 2008 server on my HP server as soon as possible. If you guys have ideas, feel free to let me know :) Best regards, David.   • Unable to mount iso as dvd drive in VMware Fusion 6

    I have a newer iMac without an optical drive and some DVDs that I needed to run software off of. This software will have you juggle discs to read data off of them, and the data can't simply be copied to the machine's drive. I used a windows machine to make ISOs of these DVDs. And the first disc, the installer, it will mount in VMware and let you install the software. It then asks for the other discs, and these won't mount as ISOs. If I mount them as drive images, they'll show up on the iMac's and I have access to all the files. But if I try to mount them as the dvd drive through Fusion, nothing happens. For that matter, I'm unable to attempt it a second time, as Fusion believes that the there is already an iso mounted as the dvd, while nothing has happened as far as the guest OS is concerned. drutil eject will allow me to eject the ghost/non-existent dvd, at which point I can make a second (equally futile) attempt. Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? How can the ISO be valid enough to mount as a drive image, but not valid enough for Fusion to mount it as if it were a dvd?

  • How do I get Flash 10.2 RC + Crystal HD for HW accelerated video to work?

    I have a netbook with a N450 Atom and a BCM70012 aka Crystal HD card. On Windows 7 I can play HD flash video with very little CPU usage because of the RC of Flash 10.2. I did some reading and saw posts claiming that the Crystal HD card is finally supported by the newer Flash 10.2 RC in Ubuntu but I can't get it to work. I can confirm that flash 10.2 is loaded and used, and there's even a HW acceleration option that is enabled in the settings but performance is horrible. From what I read, the Crystal HD card is supposed to be enabled on 10.10 by default - I don't know if it is. I tried installing drivers for it in various ways but HD flash video is still a slideshow So does anyone have it working? If so, how'd you set it up?

  • What are some programming techniques for converting SD images to HD images

    I'm taking programming class and instructor loves to work with images so most of our assignments involve manipulating raw RGB image data. One of our assignments is to implement a standard image converter that converts SD images to HD images and vice versa. I always take advantage of these types of assignments to go a little beyond what we were asked to do, so I added a basic anti-aliasing process that uses the average pixel color of the 3x3 surrounding pixels to improve the converted image. While it helps a bit, the resulting image still doesn't look good, which is ok because it's not expected to for the assignment. I've learned that converting an SD to HD images has shown to be much harder than down sampling to SD from HD just because SD to HD effectively involves increasing resolution when it is not there. Obviously, it is hard to create pixels from nothing, but I'd like enhance my anti-aliasing to something that provides better results when upscaling an image. Most of the techniques I find and read on the internet are far beyond my level of image processing and programming. Can anybody suggest any better methods or processes to create good HD content from SD content that may be within my programming skill level? I know that's a difficult thing to gauge since you don't know me, but perhaps knowing that I can write c++ code to read in raw RGB data and upscale/downscale it with simple average-anti-aliasing will give you an idea. I'm not too particular about the language or framework a long as there are minimal dependencies and they are easily installable cross-platform, or already exist. A command-line application would also work.. Looking to target WinXP, Vista, Win7, OS X Leopard & Snow Leopard, & most linux distros. I know I can write an .iso cross platform, but I'm looking for a way to burn those .ISOs to disk on a variety of platforms without having to code seperately for each one. It's for burning MP3 disks and standard audio CDs... All suggestions appreciated.

Here is my requirements: I need 2 HDMI input for 2 HD Camera the signal captured will be encoded with Adobe Live Encoder (does it support dual input sources? I do not require mixing of 2 sources) the encoding format will be H.264 (720p), then will be sent to Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server for LIVE broadcasting. http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ I found the one above online, but I am not sure about its performance, and it has only 1 HDMI input. If I plug 2 of them into my workstation, will it conflict with each other?

  • Monitor for HD video editing

    I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

  • HP dv9000 Vista laptop won't boot from CD/DVD drive

    My HP dv9000 Vista laptop recently got the BSOD with error 0x0000c1f5. The only way to fix this error is to be able to boot from CD/DVD and use some repair software I have. The problem is that the laptop REFUSES to boot from any CD/DVD I try. I've changed the boot order so the CD/DVD is first, and I can hear the drive spin up a bit upon power-up, but after a second, it spins down and then the laptop tries to boot from hard drive. Any ideas? (I've tried lots of CDs so it's not the media itself) Thanks much!

    I just booted up my 'old' PC that's been lying around for the last two years. I have Windows 7 on it and I'm looking to format the drive and do a fresh install of W7. I have the key for Windows 7 in a text file. However I don't have the Windows 7 DVD or image. So is there any way of burning off a Windows 7 DVD considering that its the operating system I'm currently using? If not...well I have a W7 key, will this key work with any W7 DVD or is it particular to the W7 image that came with the key?

  • Proper 16:9 video size for non-HD 4:3 video (for youtube/vimeo)

    Since High Definition video came out on all the online sites it has changed the default aspect ratio of the player from 4:3 to 16:9. This means that for people posting SD video you have to resize some of your videos to get them to fit right. For example, NTSC DVD quality (aka 480i/p) is 720x480 pixels (width x height). However, low-end High Definition (720i/p) is 1280x720. Anyway, now that the video players are built for HD you will find that uploading standard quality videos will result in videos that are "letter boxed" which means they have extra black bars on the top and bottom (or sides). Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order to get a 720x480 video to fit a box that is designed for HD the best practice would be to crop some of it off so that it fits as 720x404 since: 16/9 = 1.78 (1.7777777777778) 720/405 = 1.78 405x1.78 = 720.9 The same would stand for 640x480 (old TV quality) video that would need to be 640x360 correct? I'm asking because I'm not sure about all this and whether this is the proper way to fix these letter-boxing/display problems.

    I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?
