• Prevent udev / uevents looking up DVD at boot time

  Problem: Boot time delay caused by udev. Early after initscripts starts there is message saying waiting for uevents to be processed and causing delay on boot, it seems that udev is looking if there is disc in dvd tray. After udev has found disc, boot process continues normally. Main question: How to prevent udev dvd lookup at boot time? Maybe there is some way to skip some udev related stuff and let boot process continue and then later instruct udev to do stuff that may cause some delay (delay in uevents, but not in main boot process, is acceptable after udev is initially loaded).

• Clicking or Knocking with Seagate HD

  My laptop's main HD makes a clicking or knocking sound when Windows or the Bios tries to access it. I put it into a SATA dock and it sounds perfectly fine when spinning up, but after Windows tries to access it, it becomes a repetitive clicking or knocking sound. Does anyone know any tips that might help me access my data? I have most of it backed up, but I would still like to Ghost it before I send it off for repairs. I know my laptop is still under warranty.

• Radeon HD 5770 - DisplayPort Problem

  I am trying to set up 3 monitors with the Radeon HD 5770 I recieved a few days ago. I have read that I can use 2 DVI ports and an active DisplayPort adapter for a third DVI monitor. I have purchased this adapter: http://www.accellcables.com/products/DisplayPort/DP/dp_dvid.htm I have the two normal DVI monitors working, but when I try to extend the display to the third, I get a message saying the system has detected a problem with the connection through the display port which may limit resolution/refresh rate. I know that all the cables are fine, I have replaced the adapter, the monitors all work, I have tried different monitors through the adapter, and even nothing but the adapter, but I cannot get any monitor to work using it. I am trying to use 2 Dell monitors and an Acer. Have I overlooked something? Is there a compatibiliy issue I missed? Any suggestions as to what I could try? Thanks in advance.

• Realtek HD Audio playing weird with certain video formats

  Hi, I have a Gigabyte motherboard with an onboard Realtek HD sound card. The card is working perfectly everywhere, except for a single video format, where the voice is distorted, sounds as if it's been passed through a metal tube. Been googling for this, but couldn't find an answer anywhere. The movie plays fine on other systems (got Linux everywhere else), but on this one (winXP-x64-sp2) it just doesn't. • HD latency measurement using bonnie++ on different machines with different RAM size

  Hello, I have run bonnie++ v1.96 on two different servers without any additional load. One server is a "physical" Dell server with 32GB RAM, the other one is a virtual instance with 14GB RAM. I have read in the bonnie manuals that I should use two times the size of RAM in my bonnie runs, so I used 64GB on the physical machine and 28GB on the virtual machine. Now I want to compare the results, and I am wondering whether the results are comparable at all. The most interesting part is the latency part - on the physical machine, the values are about 10 times higher than on the virtual machine! Can I take these results seriously (e.g. the virtual machine HD is much much faster) or does the different RAM size tamper the results? Thanks! Jonas

• Full HD video playback acceleration with mplayer on Ubuntu Lucid

  I know that for an NVidia card I can sudo apt-get install nvidia-current mplayer, reboot, and then use mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffmpeg12vdpau,ffwmv3vdpau,ffvc1vdpau,ffh264vdpau FILE.mkv to get accelerated video playback of H.264 and other codecs, so even full HD videos can be played back with only little CPU. (And there are many other options, e.g. XBMC also supports VDPAU.) But how do I get accelerated video playback if I have a recent ATI or Intel video card on Ubuntu Lucid? How do I figure out if my video card has acceleration built in? The solution has to work with mplayer or mplayer2. It's OK for me to recompile mplayer(2), but I'd prefer installing both the kernel and the X.org X server from a binary package repository.

• Hybrid drive not booting faster than a normal HD

  I have used Windows 7 to create an image of my existing standard 160GB HD and copied this image back to a bigger 500GB Seagate hybrid drive. After copying the image to the hybrid I had to resize the partition, which was fine but after rebooting a few times to "teach" the hybrid, I have no increase in boot speed. It still takes 20-25 seconds to close down and then over a minute to start up. Is this something to do with the way the image lays itself on the drive indiscriminately? Do I need to load the OS on the drive from scratch to get the benefits? My PC with an i5 processor, is using AHCI mode.

• How do I burn Xubuntu Live CD

  I downloaded the 600+ MB Xubunto ISO. Burnt it to a DVD using Nero Burning Rom, as a Bootable DVD. My bootup sequence won't detect XUbuntu and still only detects windows on my Hard Drive even after I set my BIOS to boot from the CDROM first. How do I burn the Live CD with Nero? I'm thinking maybe I should extract the contents and then burn the folder as data to my DVD. P.S: I only have DVDs lying around.

• Looking for a free or open-source burner emulator [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Virtual CDR driver I am looking for a free or open-source virtual CD/DVD emulator to run in a Windows environment. What I want is similar to what SlySoft's Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools provides, but the emulated drive needs to be a burner of some type. The burner should be able to save disc images (.iso, .ccd, etc) to my harddrive - basically, the same as if I burned the files to a CD-R, and then ripped them back to a disc image. I have already looked around some and come across 2 - DVD neXt COPY iTurns and NoteBurner M4P. Both of these programs create a virtual CD-RW drive, but they are integrated into their product (for burning from iTunes to create mp3 files) and cannot create disc images. I am currently writing a piece of software that will have the capability to burn disc images onto CDs/DVDs, and I don't want to end up with a 100 coasters while I'm testing my software. • 1080 HD video display - Windows 7

  I am running Windows 7 in my Dell Studio 1555 Laptop. I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card inside. When I try to watch a video, I can see only some disturbed texture. I can hear the audio and no prob with that. The I can see the video frames peeking sometimes but is pretty slower. I have DirectX (directx_feb2010_redist) and Win7 codecs installed. • Splicing from a weird DVD-format

  I have a DVD full of video clips. I want to exact only some of these clips. I tried to use mplayer/mencoder's nice feature of Edit Decision List (EDL). However, the video timer seems to constantly reset with each video clip (less than 20 seconds) and its EDL does not have a video clip number or anything like that. I've tried using VLC to extract the video into an MPG file, but the same timer problem persists. What's a good way to splice out part of these clips from the DVD? I'm willing to write a small program in any language to make this work.

• ATI Radeon HD 5970 Display numbering issues

  I have 2 computers on which i have ATI Radeon HD 5970 graphics card installed. There is 1 VGA out and 1 DVI out in it. When I connect my VGA out to a monitor on my 1st computer, it shows it as display 1 and when I connect my DVI out to a monitor it show it as display 2 (I am using extended display). When I do the same thing on my 2nd computer it shows just the opposite. The VGA out shows as display 2 and the DVI out shows as display 1. Is it a problem with the drivers or the hardware? (because the graphics card on both is exactly the same)

• ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cooling

  I have a Radeon HD 5770 manufactured by ATI. In the course of using compressed air to clean it the fan shattered. I put a case fan on the card to cool it, but it's not doing a great job; the temperature goes to nearly 100 sometimes. The card is not overclocked or anything, the PC itself is clean. I looked around for a third party cooling system but the only one I found was the Accelero L2 Pro. It's low on stock and I don't know how great it will be, some review say it may not fit on all 5770 cards. Does anyone know of another one that will work? Help is much appreciated.

• Running a VM off of an external HD via USB

  Is it viable to run (i.e. reference the vmx/vhd directly from the mounted drive) a VM (vmware running Windows Seven) off of an external HD via USB? I mean, I know it's possible, but I guess I'm asking if USB provides enough bandwidth for normal usage... If so, are there any particular brands that may be better or worse? I know that ESATA would be a more viable setup, but my laptop doesn't have an ESATA port. Currently I use the VM to segregate all of my work development servers and software from my main machine; so I will be running all development servers and tools on the VM directly.

• Another "Trouble copying music files from HD to 16GB thumb drive"

  I have a brand new HP Quad Core - 6GB Ram - running 64-bit Windows 7. Running Norton Internet 2010. I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

• Can I run my OS from a DVD?

  I'm thinking of ways to get around the high cost of hard drives lately. I was thinking an optical jukebox would be interesting (though more expensive than just buying a hard drive), then thought I've heard of OS's run from DVD so why not boot from a Blue-ray drive. I think a smaller OS like a linux flavor would work. I'd like to know if there's a way I could burn Windows 7 to DVD for this use. Just curious. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks, Mac

• Radeon hd 5700 monitor blank until connected HDMI device is started

  Have win7, radeon hd 5700. When both PC monitor and HDMI device (Onkyo 607) are connected to Radeon card, the monitor diplays boot info, "starting windows, etc" but goes blank when "log into windows" should appear. Monitor comes back (w normal screen) if Onkyo and TV are turned on, not before. Multiple monitors is disabled. Really crazy. Any help appreciated. Generally, Onkyo can pick up HDMI signal ok, so at least smth works as intended.

• Empty DVD Drive indicates it has music in it (CDFS)

  I have a Windows 7, 64 bit computer with a Blu-ray DVD drive. When I first start the computer, the DVD drive indicates it has music in it, but it is empty. If I put a CD in it, it will not Autoplay. But, if I open the drive and close it again, it will Autoplay and will no longer act as if it has a music CD in it. I've checked the drive with Plextor Utilities and it says it is working OK. I would appreciate any help with this.

• Macbook Pro - Disk Locked HD needs repair, can't reinstall OSX

  I basically have the same problem. A friends HD was acting badly. Ran Disk Repair Util many times. Says disk needs repair but it won't repair it. I re formatted and installed 10.8 but that hasn't fixed it. Ive tried partitioning it and that won't work. Now I'm trying to get system 10.8 to reinstall and it says the disk is locked. Your fix requires Terminal, is that right? How do I open terminal to run your fix? Please help if you can. Disk Warrior couldn't fix it. I think the disk is bad. What do you think?

  I've found a few posts on this site, however my situation is different. I have a new Dell server with no OS installed. I would like to install Windows 2008 Web Edition. I have a few USB ports and Ethernet. No CD or DVD drives. Is this article the best & only way to proceed? Installing Windows 2008 via USB thumbdrive or should I just get a external hardrive and hook it up to a usb. Once the OS is installed I'll never need a DVD drive again - so that's idea is a waste of money.

  I have an Acer Aspire 5610 that I am trying to put an Operating System back on. I am trying to install windows 7 32-bit and it will not go through the install. Not sure why. I am now trying to reformat the hard drive and start with a fresh formatted HD. No other partitions. The problem is that the install disk is not doing the format it is giving me an error.   I have a question that you can hopefully answer me. I am trying to write a ffmpeg script that transcodes my clips in XDCAM HD 422 1080p24, and it works fine as long as the original file has 24 fps, but is there a way that I can set an option which says "even if the original file has 25 fps I will transcode it in 24 fps". I have tried it, like I said it works fine as long as the original clip has 24 frames, but as soon as the original clip has another framerate, he can not convert it to 24 frames. I have tried using -r 24 which normally settles the framerate, but here it doesn't work. I am using the -vtag xd5c
