  • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

    I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. What I have tried so far (which couldn't find the rootkit): TrendMicro OfficeScan Antivirus AVAST Malwarebytes' Anti-malware Ad-Aware Vipre Antivirus GMER TDSSKiller (Kaspersky Labs) HiJackThis RegRuns UnHackMe SuperAntiSpyware Portable Tizer Rootkit Razor (*) Sophos Anti-Rootkit SpyHunter 4 There are no other strange activities on the machine. Everything works fine except this bizarre incident. What could be the name of this annoying rootkit? How can I detect and remove it? 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   • Do your filesystems have un-owned files ?

    As part of our work for integrated compliance reporting in Solaris we plan to provide a check for determining if the system has "un-owned files", ie those which are owned by a uid that does not exist in our configured nameservice.  Tests such as this already exist in the Solaris CIS Benchmark (9.24 Find Un-owned Files and Directories) and other security benchmarks. The obvious method of doing this would be using find(1) with the -nouser flag.  However that requires we bring into memory the metadata for every single file and directory in every local file system we have mounted.  That is probaby not an acceptable thing to do on a production system that has a large amount of storage and it is potentially going to take a long time. Just as I went to bed last night an idea for a much faster way of listing file systems that have un-owned files came to me. I've now implemented it and I'm happy to report it works very well and peforms many orders of magnatude better than using find(1) ever will.   ZFS (since pool version 15) has per user space accounting and quotas.  We can report very quickly and without actually reading any files at all how much space any given user id is using on a ZFS filesystem.  Using that information we can implement a check to very quickly list which filesystems contain un-owned files. First a few caveats because the output data won't be exactly the same as what you get with find but it answers the same basic question.  This only works for ZFS and it will only tell you which filesystems have files owned by unknown users not the actual files.  If you really want to know what the files are (ie to give them an owner) you still have to run find(1).  However it has the huge advantage that it doesn't use find(1) so it won't be dragging the metadata for every single file and directory on the system into memory. It also has the advantage that it can check filesystems that are not mounted currently (which find(1) can't do).     Hey all, We've got a server setup at work which we'd like to use to exchange large files with known clients easily. We're looking into software to facilitate this, but somewhow typing "large file hosting" into Google gives questionable results.. ;) We've come up with the following requirements, and I hope any of you can points us in the direction of a solution that offers this functionality, or is malleable to our needs. Synchronization / revision management is of no concern, it's mostly single large (up to 1+ GB) file uploads & downloads we'll need. We'd like to make the downloads expire & be removed after a certain number of days / downloads, to limit the amount of cleanup we'd have to do. The data files exchanged sometimes hold confidential information, so the URLs generated should be random and not publicly visible. Our users are of the less technically savvy variety, so a simple webform would be best over a desktop client (because we also have to support a mix of operating systems). As for use of the system we'd either like to send out generated random URLs for them to upload their files, or have an easy way manage & expire users. Works on a linux (Ubuntu) server (so nothing .Net-related please) Does anyone know of software that fits the above criteria? This is great for showing an old / archived version of the site, but I suspect maintenance is going to be a real pain. I moved the files over with rsync in the first place. Is this the kinda thing that could be run as a cron job, automatically moving over newer files?

    The file-name extension .webm is used for media files using the WebM multimedia format, which consists of the WebM container (a subset of the Matroska container) and audio and video streams with independet enconding and quality settings. Description of the issue: For files in the WebM format, the program file says that files are raw data, instead of determining and displaying the real file-format, which is WebM. Besides, Nautilus doesn't display the technical metadata of files in this format. Why is the file program not displaying the file format for WebM files?

    After reading the documentation for MySQL Workbench I got the impression that it's possible to alter a database in the server (e.g. add a new column) and later incorporate the DDL changes into your EER diagram. At least, it has a Synchronize Model option in the Database menu. I found it a nice feature because I could use a graphic modelling tool without becoming its prisoner. In practice, when I run such tool I'm offered these options: Model Update Source ================ ====== ====== my_database_name --> ! N/A my_table_name --> ! Am I misunderstanding the feature?

    I was wondering, is it possible to synchronize with any tool or gem or w/e 2 or more yml files? eg. i have the Greek yml file called el.yml el: layout: home: "??????" and the english one called en.yml en: layout: home: "Home" category: "Category" Is there any tool that based on a single yml file ie en.yml ( root ) that goes to the rest of the ymls and creates the missing translations with the default (en.yml) values? After running such a tool i would expect to have the el.yml become likes this: el: layout: home: "??????" category: "Category" I am using a similar tool in .NET RESX Synchronizer and it does exactly that, but for resx files.

  • AS3: Synchronize Timer event to actual time?

    I plan to use a timer event to fire every second (for a clock application). I may be wrong, but I assume that there will probably be a (very slight) sync issue with the actual system time. For example the timer event might fire when the actual system time milliseconds are at 500 instead of 0 (meaning the seconds will be partially 'out of phase' if you will). Is there a way to either synchronize the timer event to the real time or get some kind of system time event to fire when an second ticks in AS3? Also if I set a Timer to fire every 1000 milliseconds, is that guaranteed or can there be some offset based on the application load? These are probably negligible issues but I'm just curious.     hello, I have a directory with files and a database table with what should be the same files. I would like to be able to synchronize the database table with the directory. What would be the most efficient way to do this? or would I realistically only be able to do this in a brute manner? Here's my approach: 1. retrieve all of the files in the directory as array 2. retrieve all of the filenames in the database table as array 3. loop through the file values in the directory array and use in_array() on the database table array to verify the filename is in that array, and if not then start building an array to insert the missing filenames. run db query to add each missing file row to database table 4. loop through directory array and use in_array() on the directory array and anything not found in the directory array will just be deleted from the table. Is there a better way to go about this? or something better for this in php than in_array()?

    How can I properly rename the Program Files folder in Windows 7? That is, not simply rename the directory and create symlinks, but make Windows itself see the location of installed programs as something else. I have already renamed the directory to Programs (using desktop.ini for a localized name in explorer), and made Program Files into a symlink to that, but I wonder if it's ever possible to erase the symlink by configuring Windows to, under all circumstances, assume Programs as the actual name for the programs directory. I heard that it should be possible to choose the name from Windows installation, but I'm not sure. Besides, I don't want to reinstall Windows from scratch. Before you mention %ProgramFiles%, no, it doesn't work. I'm not sure if Windows has that location hard-coded, or if replacing all occurrences in the registry would be enough.

    Hello I was hoping some one could help me my drive has 92gbs used space, 95gbs free out of 220 partition 33gbs in the air i cant find, already did cleanup, emptied recycle bin, history and temp files also and I believe sin Ive seen before its possibly space my brother used with a program he uses to hide (possibly encrypted) files dont know the name just seen him do it on usb and pc dont appear visible or hidden and result is what you read above is there any way of finding them to delete them hence my brother is nowhere to b found or could it be something else??? already tried freecommander also.

    Here is the point. I set Windows to display all the hidden files and protected operating system files but even after that, my antivirus (Kaspersky) is still getting a ".dll" file on "c:\windows\system32" saying it's a riskware 'Hidden.Object'. I tried to find this file everytime but it's not there. So I asked one of the developers to create a service that verifies the folder each 5 seconds and, if it founds the file, copies to another place. After a lot of research I just found out that every file with this same name on this specific server gets cloak, doesn't matter the file extension. How can I found this kind of file? How can I "uncloak" it? How can I know what this file is doing?

It has 2 disks: system disk: 16 GB data disk: 500 MB I installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 + MSDN and some small tools and libraries that don't take much space. Over time the system disk's free space has been going down (I suspect because of regular system updates - NetFx (.NET), service packs, and regular updates). Questions 1 How do you remove Windows Update uninstall files from Windows Server 2008? Question 2 I also found lots of files in C:/Windows/Installer folder. Is it possible to determine which .msp file goes with which patch? I would like to delete some of them, because they do take a lot of space.
