  • How to configure Apache (sites-available vs httpd.conf)

    - by Edan Maor
Hi, I'm brand new to Apache so this might be a stupid question. I've been trying to follow a few basic tutorials explaining how to get Apache up and running (on ubuntu, running on Amazon). I've mostly come up blank, because all the tutorials told me to configure httpd.conf (to add DocumentRoot, etc.). I've now stumbled across one tutorial that told me to add site configurations to the sites-available directory (under /etc/apache), and then symlink to it from sites-enabled. Configuring this way seems to work. But now I'm confused - how am I supposed to configure Apache? Most tutorials still seem to say that I should be using httpd.conf. Which one should I be using? What's the difference? Why are all the tutorials "wrong" (if they are)? Thanks!

  • How to setup multiple Apache SSL sites using multiple IP addresses

    - by Jeff
How do you setup a single Apache2 config to host multiple HTTPS sites each on their own IP address? There will also be multiple HTTP sites on just a single IP address. I do not want to use Server Name Indication (SNI) as described here, and I'm only concerned with the important top-level Apache directives. That is, I just need to know the skeleton of how my config should look. The basic setup looks like this: Hosted on 1.1.1.1:80 (HTTP) - example.com - example.net - example.org Hosted on 2.2.2.2:443 (HTTPS) - secure.com Hosted on 3.3.3.3:443 (HTTPS) - secure.net Hosted on 4.4.4.4:443 (HTTPS) - secure.org And here are the important config directives I have so far, which is the closest I've come to a working iteration, but still no dice. I know I'm close, just need a little push in the right direction. Listen 1.1.1.1:80 Listen 2.2.2.2:443 Listen 3.3.3.3:443 Listen 4.4.4.4:443 NameVirtualHost 1.1.1.1:80 NameVirtualHost 2.2.2.2:443 NameVirtualHost 3.3.3.3:443 NameVirtualHost 4.4.4.4:443 # HTTP VIRTUAL HOSTS: <VirtualHost 1.1.1.1:80> ServerName example.com DocumentRoot /home/foo/example.com </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 1.1.1.1:80> ServerName example.net DocumentRoot /home/foo/example.net </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 1.1.1.1:80> ServerName example.org DocumentRoot /home/foo/example.org </VirtualHost> # HTTPS VIRTUAL HOSTS: <VirtualHost 2.2.2.2:443> ServerName secure.com DocumentRoot /home/foo/secure.com SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.com.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.com.key SSLCACertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/ca.txt </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 3.3.3.3:443> ServerName secure.net DocumentRoot /home/foo/secure.net SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.net.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.net.key SSLCACertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/ca.txt </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 4.4.4.4:443> ServerName secure.org DocumentRoot /home/foo/secure.org SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.org.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /home/foo/ssl/secure.org.key SSLCACertificateFile /home/foo/ssl/ca.txt </VirtualHost> For what it's worth, I prefer to have each of my SSL sites on their own IP instead of including one of them on the primary VHOST IP. Any links which show a standard setup would be more than welcome!

  • Web deploy (msdeploy), syncing everything but sites and pools (but include siteDefaults)

    - by jishi
Today I do the following to sync two webservers but skip all site configuration: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:webServer -dest:webServer,computerName=web25:8080 -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/sites -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/applicationPools However, this effectively also skip the siteDefaults, which I do like to sync (system.applicationHost/sites/siteDefaults) There doesn't seem to be a way to "include" a section, to override the skip directive. And there doesn't seem to be a way to sync only the siteDefaults section from applicationHost either, since source appHostConfig only seem to sync a specified site, and not siteDefaults. Maybe it is possible to "skip" using an Xpath expression or similar, to only skip the nodes, but include , but I find the documentation a bit confusing and my Xpath is rusty.

  • Some sites won't load on Ubuntu/Mint

    - by Or W
I have a REALLY weird problem with either my network or my OS. Last week I've suddenly had difficulties loading some websites or even more odd some parts of different websites. For example, I could load gmail.com, login and view the list of emails in my inbox but when I clicked one of them it would just time out. Another example is http://www.ynet.co.il, I can view the home page but going into any one of the articles fails (times out). I've tried Chrome, Firefox and Opera, all fail the same way. If I take a URL of a page I cannot load via the browser and try to wget it though the console I get the file just fine. I've formatted my machine (Used to run Ubuntu 13.04) and installed Mint Linux this time, it worked fine for a few days and now, again, having the same exact issues. Important to note that I have other machines connected either directly or via Wi-Fi to the router and they are all working fine (two win7 machines and 1 raspberry pi). Another strange behavior is that I can ftp or ssh to remote machines but cannot send files via ftp (times out) even if I set passive mode ON and when using ssh I can do just about anything but I cannot paste text into the remote machine, for example if I nano a file on the remote machine and try to paste anything from my clipboard it freezes. What I've tried so far: Disable IPv6 on the networking admin (and on firefox disabling ipv6 on the about:config page) Changing the port and the network cable I went to the store and bought a new standalone PCIe network adapter Connected my win7 laptop using the same cable and router port (sites that were not working on my Mint are working just fine on the win7 machine) Loaded Mint from a livecd, got the same result Tried changing the MTU (was 1500, tried 1492) Some observations: When I clear my browser cache and go to facebook.com for example, the homepage loads but I fail to load any profile/group page. If I refresh facebook.com homepage a couple of times it stops and fails to load until I clear my browser cache. I changed the chrome cache folder permissions to 0777 but that did not help. When I run netstat -n I see A LOT of connections that are in 'FIN_WAIT' mode (I'm guessing that's when I try to refresh pages that are not working and timing out), I have no idea what it means or if it helps anyone figure out what's wrong. The sites that are not loading correctly are always that same, they don't vary or anything and they fail to load exactly the same way on all three browsers that I've tried. When I Googled 'Ubuntu some sites not loading' I see a huge amount of complaints just like mine, but none of them that I could find actually says what the problem is or how they fixed it. Technical stuff: netstat -n ps aux netstat -nr

  • Monitoring bandwidth/latency/jitter between 2 sites?

    - by TheCleaner
I have 2 sites connected via an MPLS network and I'd like to do the following: setup a host on each end that can "talk" back and forth between each other and somehow report/log what kind of throughput, jitter, latency, etc. they are experiencing between each other in 5 minute intervals. Something similar to Qcheck but that can be automated. Bottom line is I'm trying to determine if the WAN network is "stable" throughout the day or if something is wrong. We have video conferences between these sites and even at 1024kbps calls we are experiencing delays and jitter. I'm hoping to exonerate the network with some testing.

  • Tweaking "Most visited sites" button in Firefox

    - by Mehper C. Palavuzlar
It is sometimes practical to use "Most Visited" sites which stands on the left hand side of Firefox window. When I click on it, I can see maximum 10 URLs. At that point, I have 2 questions: Is it possible to increase the number of maximum most visited sites (say, 30)? Let's say example.com is one of the most visited domains. In the most visited list, there are other pages from this domain, like example.com/intro, example.com/info, example.com/help etc. So those sub-addresses are also in the list, but I just want to see max 1 (or maybe 2) pages from the same domain in the list. Is it possible to arrange the list this way?

However, device formats are so varied that delivering a mobile web experience that will engage site visitors and enhance your brand can be a daunting task. Solutions that empower organizations to easily extend their web presence to the mobile channel, while saving significant time and effort in managing mobile sites, are now essential in our ever connected mobile world. So what are some of the things organizations should look for in such a solution? Mobile device form factors, networks, protocols, and browsers vary widely, and reformatting web content for thousands of different device and software combinations is a prohibitive task. An effective mobile solution can make this process seamless by automatically formatting designated web content for mobile delivery.  By automatically detecting a site visitor’s device configuration, the selected web content can be sized and formatted for optimal display on that particular device. This can save tremendous time involved in building, formatting, and maintaining individual websites or mobile applications for different mobile devices. It’s not enough to simply support the thousands of different mobile device types that are out there. It’s also critical to make it easy for marketers and other business users to manage mobile sites and mobile content. Those responsible for maintaining an organization’s web and mobile experiences need the ability to edit content using rich text editor tools and then preview that content directly in the context of the mobile website and the traditional website, ideally from the same business user interface. Powerful capabilities such as these make managing the web experience for mobile devices easy, even with frequently changing content, across a multitude of different devices. This saves tremendous time involved in building, formatting, and maintaining individual websites or mobile applications for different mobile devices. When content or business needs change, the business user needs only to change site content once, and it is seamlessly deployed to the web and all mobile channels.Geo-location is another critical input to making the online experience engaging and relevant for web visitors who are increasingly mobile. A mobile solution should enable use of device GPS data to deliver location-based content and services to mobile website visitors. Organizations can provide mobile site visitors with location-sensitive search results, location-based offers and recommendations, integration of maps and directions into site content, and much more – all critical for meeting the needs of those on the go.To hear more about how mobile is changing the game, check out our recent webcast with Ted Schadler, Vice President, Principal Analyst, Forrester, where he discussed why mobile is the new face of engagement, or learn more about how to extend your web presence to the mobile channel with Oracle WebCenter Sites and Oracle WebCenter Sites Mobility Server.

  • AIIM, Oracle and Keste - Talking Social Business in LA

    - by Brian Dirking
We had a great event today in Los Angeles - AIIM, Oracle and Keste presented on how organizations are making social business work. Atle Skjekkeland of AIIM presented How Social Business Is Driving Innovation. Atle talked about a number of fascinating points, such as how answers to questions come from unexpected sources. Atle cited the fact that 38% of organizations get half or more of answers from unexpected sources, which speaks to the wisdom of the crowds and how people are benefiting from open communications tools to get answers to their questions. He also had a number of hilarious examples of companies that don't get it. If Comcast were to go to YouTube and search Comcast, they would see the number one hit after their paid ad is a video of one of their technicians asleep on a customer's couch. Seems when he called the office for support he was put on hold so long he fell asleep. Dan O'Leary and Atle Skjekkeland After Atle's presentation I presented on Solving the Innovation Challenge with Oracle WebCenter. Atle had talked about McKinsey's research titled The Rise Of The Networked Enterprise: Web 2.0 Finds Its Payday. I brought in some new McKinsey research that built on that article. The new article is How Social Technologies Are Extending The Organization. A survey of 4,200 Global Executives brought three conclusions for the future: Boundaries among employees, vendors and customers will blur Employee teams will self-organize Data-driven decisions will rise These three items were themes that repeated through the day as we went through examples of what customers are doing today.  Next up was Vince Casarez of Keste. Vince was scheduled to profile one customer, but in an incredible 3 for 1 deal, Vince profiled Alcatel-Lucent, Qualcomm, and NetApp. Each of these implementations had content consolidation elements, as well as user engagement requirements that Keste was able to address with Oracle WebCenter. • Configuring UCM content cache invalidation for a custom portal application

    - by Martin Deh
Recently, I had blogged about enabling the UCM content cache invalidator for Spaces (found here).  This can also be enabled for a WebCenter Custom Portal application as well.  The much overlooked setting is done through the Content Repository connection definition in the JDeveloper Application Resources section.   Enabling the cache invalidator "sweeper" can be invaluable, where UCM content is being updated from within UCM (console) and not within the portal.

  • Delivering the Integrated Portal Experience!

    - by Michael Snow
v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} Guest post by Richard Maldonado, Principal Product Manager, Oracle WebCenter Portal Organizations are still struggling to standardize on a user interaction platform which can meet the needs of all their target audiences.  This has not only resulted in inefficient and inconsistent experiences for their users, but it also creates inefficiencies (productivity and costs) for the departments that manage the applications and information systems.  Portals have historically been the unifying platform that provide IT with a common interface which can securely surface the most relevant interactions for a given user and/or group of users.  However, organizations have found that the technologies available have either not provided the flexibility necessary to address all of their use cases, or they rely too much on IT resources to manage, maintain, and evolve.  Empowering  the Business Groups The core issue that IT departments face with delivering portal experiences is having enough resources to respond and address the influx of requirements which come in from the business.  Commonly, when a business group wants a new portal site established for their group, they will submit a request to the IT dept, the IT dept then assigns a resource to an administrator and/or developer to build.  Unfortunately, this approach is not scalable, it can be a time consuming activity which requires significant interaction between the business owner and the IT resource.  A modern user interaction platforms should empower the business groups by providing them tools which they can use to build and manage the portal experiences without the need for IT's involvement.  And because business groups rarely have technical resources (developers) on staff, the tools must be easy enough that virtually any business user could use.  In addition, the tool must be powerful enough to allow them to build the experience that they need, things such as creating a whole new portal, add/manage page and page hierarchy, manage user/group access, add/modify components within the page, etc.  This balance between ease-of-use and flexibility is key to the successful adoption of tools which will ultimately reduce the burden on IT, respond to the needs of the business, and deliver high-value experiences for the users.  Ready or Not, Here They Come: Smartphones and Tablets Recently, several studies have highlighted that smartphone and tablet-style devices have overtaken PC's in both sales and usage.  This shift is further driving organizations to revaluate how they're delivering data, information, and applications to their users.  Users are expecting to get the same level of access and interaction, but in a ways which are optimized for the capabilities of the device that they are using.  Expect More With the ever growing number of new IT projects and flat/shrinking budgets, organizations are looking for comprehensive solutions which can deliver integrated web experiences that are tailored for the users and optimized for mobile devices.  Piecing together a number of point solutions is no longer an option.  A modern portal technology should not only address the traditional needs of integrating and surfacing back-end applications/information, but it should enable the business through easy-to-use tools and accelerate the delivery of mobile optimized experiences.   v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} 12.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; • The Minimalist's Approach to Content Governance

    - by Kellsey Ruppel
This week on the blog, we want to focus on the content lifecylce and how important it is to have the tools in place to be able to properly manage all te phases of the content lifecylce. John Brunswick has some great advice when it comes to this topic, so expect to hear a lot from him this week! Originally posted by John Brunswick. Let's be honest - content governance is far from an exciting topic. BUT the potential of a very small intranet team creating and maintaining a platform that provides an organization with relevant, high value information, helping workers to get their jobs done with greater accuracy and in less time is exciting. It is easy to quickly start producing content, but the challenge is ensuring that the environment is easy to navigate and use on the third week and during the third year.   What can be done to bridge this gap? Over the next few blog entries let's take a pragmatic, minimalistic view of a process that can help any team manage a wealth of unstructured information. Based on an earlier article that I wrote around Portal Governance, I am going to focus on using technology as much as possible to support the governance of content with minimal involvement from users. The only certainty about content production is that business users are not fans of maintaining content. Maintenance is overhead and is a long-term investment thats value will possibly not be realized under the current content creator's watch. To add context to how we will use technical tools in this process, each post will highlight one section of the content lifecycle process as outlined below Content Lifecycle Stages 1. Request - Understand the education, purpose, resource and success criteria for content 2. Create - Determine access and workflow for content 3. Manage - Understand ownership and review cycles 4. Retire - Act on thresholds established during the request stage Within each state we will also elaborate as to 1. Why - why would we entertain doing this? 2. How - the steps that are needed to make it happen 3. Impact - what is the net benefit or loss based on the process Over the course of this week, we will dive deep into the stages and the minimal amount of time, effort and process within each to make some meaningful gains in the improvement of user experience and productivity in their search for information. It might be a stretch to say that we can make content governance exciting, but hopefully it can end up being painless and paying dividends. And if you'd like to hear first hand from a customer that is managing their content lifecycle with Oracle WebCenter, be sure to join us on Wednesday for this webcast "ResCare Solves Content Lifecycle Challenges with Oracle WebCenter"!

  • Python vs Ruby Top Sites

    - by Steve
Hi, I was just trying to find some comparison of the existing python web frameworks and ruby frameworks. There are few promising frameworks in python but I was not able to find a top 100 site using python except for google, which uses python extensively. Python has great frameworks but I am not able to find a really popular sites using python. Definitely most of the site would use python for background processing and stuff. On the other hand, ruby on rails has a few sites like twitter, hulu, yellowpages, scribd are present in top 100 sites. Can you mention some really popular sites using either of these languages.

  • Apache2 several sites and configuration question

Hello I want to host several sites from my VPS via apache2 under Debian. For this I removed the default from sites-enabled and added this under /etc/apache/sites-enabled/www.mysite.com : NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName mysite.com ServerAlias www.mysite.com Alias /media/ /home/myuser/mysite/media/ Alias /admin_media/ /home/myuser/django/Django-1.2/django/contrib/admin/media/ WSGIScriptAlias / /home/myuser/mysite/wsgi.py ErrorLog /home/myuser/mysite/logs/error.log CustomLog /home/myuser/mysite/logs/access.log combined </VirtualHost> After that I removed the default symbolic link from sites-enabled/ via: a2dissite default and added the new one: a2ensite www.mysite.com Still, I get this error: Restarting web server: apache2apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for myuser apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [Sat May 29 11:41:13 2010] [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts apache2: apr_sockaddr_info_get() failed for myuser apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName [Sat May 29 11:41:13 2010] [warn] NameVirtualHost *:80 has no VirtualHosts . • Do you know any code sharing sites?

    - by jasondavis
I am always looking to organize and make my resource bookmarks better and easiar to access when I need them. 1 thing I really like is code sharing sites, they let you enter in code and then give you a special link to give a friend or a user on this site even to show then code, This is a very useful tool I believe. So below is my list of code sharing sites, there is 4 on the list and they all have unique features. Some have syntax highlighting for multiple languages, some allow you to save your code as private and only share with the people you give the link to, and some even run the run and output any possible errors. • Calcualting Optimal Site to Site Routing using pre-computed times between sites

    - by Idistic
    Assume that I have a number of sites (locations) and the time it takes to travel from each site to each site is pre-computed Example Data - Site to Site Pre-Calculated Times in minutes From Start Site To A 20 To B 15 To C 15 From Site A To B 10 To C 15 Site B To A 10 To C 20 Site C To A 15 To B 20 4 Sites is fairly simple, but what if the site set was say 1000 sites? Given a large site set What would the best approach be to quickly find the optimal routes from the start site while visiting every other site just once? Route Solutions from Start Site for 3 sites from a start site 1 A(20) B(10) C(20) = 50 2 A(20) C(15) B(20) = 55 3 B(15) A(10) C(15) = 40 4 B(15) C(20) A(15) = 50 5 C(15) A(15) B(10) = 40 6 C(15) B(20) A(10) = 45

  • ASP.NET hosting: better, faster, cheaper

    - by Fabrice Marguerie
After seven years with webhost4life, it was time to move on. Especially because of all the troubles with webhost4life due to their internal migration to a new hosting environment (the company has been bought out).I've just moved all my websites elsewhere. I'm now using Arvixe and OrcsWeb.I use OrcsWeb for metaSapiens.com. OrcsWeb kindly offers me free ASP.NET hosting because I'm a Microsoft MVP. I'd like to publicly thank OrcsWeb for this, and I invite you to have a look at what they have to offer.I use Arvixe for all my other websites, the major ones being SharpToolbox.com, JavaToolbox.com, AxToolbox.com, Proagora.com, LinqInAction.net, ClairDeBulle.com, and madgeek.com.Moving all my websites wasn't a walk in the park, but it was well worth it. Let's consider what I get with Arvixe:Unlimited diskspaceUnlimited data transferUnlimited domainsDedicated application poolsUnlimited POP3 and IMAP mailboxesUnlimited SQL Server 2008 databasesUnlimited MySQL 5 databases.NET 1.1, 2, 3.5 and 4Full trustIIS 7Daily backups A powerful and easy to use control panelAnd more! All of this for $8 per month. If you don't need all of the above features, you can even get an offer as cheap as $5 per month. You can even get better rates if you use coupon codes, such as TOPHOST (30% discount) or MVCHOSTING (20% discount). All in all, I paid only $134 for two years for a great hosting service!Maybe it's time for you to move too?Disclaimer: the links to OrcsWeb and Arvixe are affiliate links that may bring me some money home if you sign up.

  • How to protect SHTML pages from crawlers/spiders/scrapers?

    - by Adam Lynch
I have A LOT of SHTML pages I want to protect from crawlers, spiders & scrapers. I understand the limitations of SSIs. An implementation of the following can be suggested in conjunction with any technology/technologies you wish: The idea is that if you request too many pages too fast you're added to a blacklist for 24 hrs and shown a captcha instead of content, upon every page you request. If you enter the captcha correctly you've removed from the blacklist. There is a whitelist so GoogleBot, etc. will never get blocked. Which is the best/easiest way to implement this idea? Server = IIS Cleaning out the old tuples from a DB every 24 hrs is easily done so no need to explain that.
