• Is it possible to tie a subscription to a iTunes account with in-app purhcase?

  We're trying to implement a subscription service with in-app purchase in our app. The problem is our service does not require a user account for the past year of service. Users simply use this service with advertisements shown. We want to give them a subscription where they can buy for say, 3 months to have the advertisement removed. How can this be done? We'll have to make it a consumable because it is a subscription. But we wouldn't know when the subscription end. We can't save the state locally because the user might reinstall the app We can't save the state on the server and tie it to their device because sometimes the user changes device We don't have a user account to tie the subscription to and we don't want to introduce a user account system which spoils the experience. Is there some way of associating the purchase with their iTunes account? So that it is carried with them when they reinstall or changes device?

• How do I group a SSRS report by month?

  I have a set of data that includes a field with the datetime that events happen. i want to group the events by month. I haven't come across a simple and elegant expression to achieve this. So far all I can come up with is to convert the field to a date, then take the year and month as integers and then convert this back to a string with the day set to 1. In Crystal Reports I would group on the datetime field and then set the period to month, very easy. I am sure there is an easy answer to this that I haven't been able to find.

• Why does Net::Twitter complain "HTTP::Message content not bytes"?

  We have been using Perl's Net:Twitter CPAN module (version 3.12) and basic authentication (not OAuth) for almost a year now to syndicate updates from our site to our Twitter account. We just migrated to a new server last week and since the move our updates to Twitter have stopped and the following error is being reported whenever we try to post an update: HTTP::Message content not bytes at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/HTTP/Request/Common.pm line 90 Here is the code we're using the update our Twitter account: use Net::Twitter; my $twitter = Net::Twitter->new( traits => [qw/API::REST/], username => $username, password => $password, source => 'twitterfeed' ); my $result = $twitter->update($status); I have no idea what the issue is and was hoping that someone else has run into this issue and can provide a quick solution. • How to read a column in a tab-delimited Excel file in C#?

  I have some data of an excel file below. At first, I figured that reading from the file could be done using the Excel Library then using an OLEDB connection. I managed to get the DocumentNo column data with the OLEDB approach. However, when the excel file is closed, I am unable to do the operation because it gives an error that "External table is not in the expected format."   I'm already a professional J2EE developer by day, and Rails developer by night. I'm planning on adding Python to my list of skills. I'm already convinced a language is just a tool, so I'm not interested in a religious war. I agree with the Pragmatic Programmers that learning one language/year is a good thing for your professional development So, in your considered opinion, what kinds of applications does Python hit the sweet spot? And why? What advantages does it have, and why do these advantages outweigh the costs in adopting Python? ADD: I also plan on learning a pure functional language like Scheme.

• Teaching a kid to type in order to start programming

  My 5 year old wants to start programming, but he doesn't yet know how to type without looking for each letter 1 at a time. I know it's going to frustrate him to go so slow because of his typing speed. And it's not going to be fun looking for all the letters constantly... So what's the best way to get him to type fast? Clearly he'll need to type a lot of punctuation like semicolons, colons and symbols. So his little hands will have to get used to spreading over the keyboard... I did some google searches and found some very poor looking apps that focused on the letters.

  I m much of a newbie to client/server applications and networking.I am currently starting up a project in which we are planning to create an application or something like a website accessible only to clients in that LAN network.We want the server to upload videos so that the clients can view them whenever they want.Also the clients can upload videos.Also we want some kind of registration to provide authentication to avoid bogus videos.Also additional features that can be added on later like comment section,ratings,Groups etc. Basically what we want is to build mini-youtube but with one major difference , we want the application to be LAN based.   I am a web developer, have worked with PHP and .NET both. having over a year of experience working on web I haven't been able to understand the browser caching features thoroughly, I hope Web Gurus here can help me with it. Questions I have in my mind are : How does browser actually caches stuff, does it request for to see if the cached file has changed on the server or not, What is the Ideal way for a developer to make use of browser chaching to its full, but also to be able to push new changes on the site with no hassle at all. I think if browser somehow chaches my CSS and JS and Images, and then just makes a checks for their modification to the server everytime, this can sort the issue. but I am not sure how to do it, waiting for interesting answers :)

  I want to start developmet of new application using PrismV4, MEF, Ribbon. But now, I have a problem. How to create tabs for Ribbon dynamically? Each module in application could create own tab in Ribbon. And each tab may have many groups. How can it be done? Where do I need to place each group's definitions (what controls to use (buttons, textboxes, comboboxes, etc) and command bindings and how? Do I need to write XAML somewhere in Module, or all it can be done by code? And last question, how to notify Ribbon (in Shell) to add these tabs to Ribbon? On the other hand, I have noticed that quite many guys suggest jQuery for this task ( http://jquery.bassistance.de/autocomplete/demo/). • Has Google introduced a system that allows multiple "keyword-only" domains per site?

  I've been told by a client that "a friend" told them that as of January 2010, Google allows multiple domain names that have keywords in them to be associated with a single site. To be honest this sounds rather April-foolish but I'm not sure when his "friend" told him so for the time being I have to take it at face value. I've heard nothing of this and have searched for such a thing this morning, to find nothing but warnings against this practice. Said client seems keen on buying up lots of domains today, so before he insists upon it I just want to be absolutely sure - has Google silently introduced such an allowance, or is there something else they introduced earlier this year that he could be getting confused with? • Which Visual Studio 2010 edition for sole developer

  I am the sole .net developer for a small company. My projects span many .net technologies including WinForms, WPF, SQL, XNA, Linq, WCF, WTF?, and others. I struggle staying on top of all these projects so I'm looking to make my life easier with the release of VS2010. Without a mentor I rely heavily on StackOverflow and whatever else Google comes up with. Should I convince my company to get an edition with an MSDN subscription? Is it one of those things where once you have it, you can't imagine life without it? What about the source control that comes with VS2010, do you all find it better than an SVN server? We're looking to hire another programmer this year, would I be best off getting a Team edition of VS2010 to be best prepared for that hire? Thanks!

• Database design: How should I add an information which can apply to several tables

  I am constructing a database System using Mysql, this will be an application of about 20 tables. The system contains information on farmers, we work with organic certification and need to record a lot of info for that. In my system, there are related parent-child tables for farmers, producing years and fields/areas - it's a simple representation of the real world in which farmers farm crops on their fields. I now need to add several status flags for each one of these levels: a farmer can be certified, or his field can be, or the specific year can be; each of these flags has several states and can occur a number of times. The obvious solution to this would be to add a child table to every one of these tables, and define the states there. What I wonder if there is an easier way to do this to avoid getting to many tables? Where/how would be best practise to keep that data?

  On the following website, www.josecvega.com, I have a navigation bar with years that link to sections on that same page. Unfortunately it is not working they way I hoped, when the user selects a year it moves to the section of the page, but puts that section on the top of the page. I have a fixed div on the top of the page that covers the sections and prevents it from properly displaying. What can I do for this to work? • Payment Gateways for Mid-Sized Business?

  My company is a bit unhappy with the support we've been getting from Cybersource and we're about to embark on a billing re-write so we're taking the opportunity to look at other gateways. Anyone have any positive or negative experiences they'd like to share? I'd rather not hear about small website gateways like paypal, we run tens of thousands of transactions and millions a year. If you know, I'd love to hear how much you're paying in transaction/gateway fees too. We're primarily a .NET shop if you'd like to speak to a particular API. Gateway must support the big 4 credit cards (mc, visa, disc, amex) and ACH. Thanks in advance for the help from the hive mind. :)

  My program is getting a false positive from a certain 3 letter Anti Virus Company. Its just our companies branded version of Ultra VNC. Its only this one company that's identifying it as a virus and we've been using the same copy of that program for almost a year. I know its possible to tell this Anti Virus program the VNC client is safe, but I can't do that for all of our clients. I've tried to find a way to contact this company to see if they can do something to prevent this from happening, but I'm not getting anywhere. Has anyone who's experiened this issue with thier software, found a solution? Thanks

• Printing an East Coast Timestamp in Arizona time

  Hello, The code returns "datesubmitted" in a nice format. The field "datesubmitted" is a timestamp of East Coast time. How could I print it out as Arizona time? Right now, that would be 3 hours behind East Coast time. For now, I would be happy just to do that. However, during other parts of the year (when Daylight Savings time is not being used), Arizona time is only 2 hours behind East Coast time. Is there a way that I could print the date below so that Arizona time is always correctly displayed? Or would I have to change the code when Daylight Savings time stops and starts?
