• Adding a SVN repository in Eclipse

  I'm trying to add an svn repository to eclipse. I've installed subclipse, and it seems to be working fine. But, when I try to "add a new SVN repository", I input this, for example: http://svn.python.org/projects/peps/trunk I get this: Error validating location: "org.tigris.subversion.javahl.ClientException: RA layer request failed svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.python.org/projects/peps/trunk': could not connect to server (http://svn.python.org) " Keep location anyway? I know that my eclipse can connect to the 'net because I downloaded subclipse earlier (I had to change my proxy settings). I get a similar message for other SVN locations I've tried to add. Anyone have any solutions?

• Best tool to check and ensure PDF/A compatibility under Linux

  I am working on an online portal, where researchers can upload their research papers. One requirement is, that all PDFs are stored in PDF/A-format. As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

  i have index.pl and subs.pl when i run the program user inserts date of birth and then it is passed to getage() subroutine in subs.pl . subs.pl has many subroutines. getage() than implicitly calls another subroutine called validate() which validates the date entered by user. when i run the index.pl user enters the date as: 03-04-2005 following error comes :can't modify non-lvalue subroutine call at subs.pl line 85, < line 1 and at 85th line of subs.pl i have list(my $val,my @value) = validate($dob); why such error comes any solutions

• How can I detect a debugger or other tool that might be analysing my software?

  A very simple situation. I'm working on an application in Delphi 2007 which is often compiled as 'Release' but still runs under a debugger. And occasionally it will run under SilkTest too, for regression testing. While this is quite fun I want to do something special... I want to detect if my application is running within a debugger/regression-tester and if that's the case, I want the application to know which tool is used! (Thus, when the application crashes, I could report this information in it's error report.) Any suggestions, solutions?

• need a web browser in my desktop application

  part of the specification of this desktop application is to have a mini browser built in, so that you can enter URL, and navigate the site as you would on a normal browser. Access to the browser page's DOM is required, should let me programmatically change the rendering view of a page, should be cross-platform, renders javascript JDIC seems outdated and I've heard Mozswing doesn't run on Mac.... Jxbrowser license costs a grand and up. Is Java the wrong platform to be creating such app? Are there any other solutions out there for building an application like this ? Thank you.

• Documentation of a software project

  I am working with a team that works on a very large software project, we have tons of Documentation that is written in MS WORD format with nohyperlinked indexes, no search ability. Everyday we waste our time trying to find the exact document or reference. I was thinking if there was way or even a professional tool that would convert all this into a wiki format and maybe with a little manual (painful) help be organised into something that improves the accessibility. I use Google Desktop Search to make my life a little easier but its not the best solution I just want to know if any of you faced similar problems and possible solutions to this issue.

• Maths: Determining angle in 3D space

  I hope this is the proper location to ask this question which is the same as this one, but expressed as pure math instead of graphically (at least I hope I translated the problem to math correctly). Considering: two vectors that are orthogonal: Up (ux, uy, uz) and Look (lx, ly, lz) a plane P which is perpendicular to Look (hence including Up) Y1 which is the projection of Y (vertical axis) along Look onto P Question: what is the value of the angle between Y1 and Up? As mathematicians will agree, this is a very basic question, but I've been scratching my head on walls now for at least two weeks without being able to visualize the solution... maybe now too old for finding solutions to school exercises. I'm looking for the scalar trigonometric solution, not a solution using a matrix. Thanks.

• UITableView via NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate, select first record by default?

  I have a UITableView that gets populated from CoreData via a controller that implements NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate. How can I have it automatically select the first row (and fire the tableView:didSelectRowAtIndexPath message)? The tableview is used for a variety of predicate queries, so I'm suspicious of solutions that work on the UIViewController lifecycle (viewDidLoad, etc), but I'm new to the platform, so I'm open. I've tried a variety of things, but I'm not sure where in the call stack to put it. I've tried calling cell.selected = true inside tableView:cellForRowAtIndex: method, but that just ends up turning the cell black (and doesn't fire the selected callback method) A tagent question, with all the delegating and core data protocols, does it imply asynchronous data fetch (multiple threads)? Or is the NSFetchedResultsController calling all its related methods in the same thread? Maybe I'm just scared that if it is async, there would be race conditions that would be tough to troubleshoot later.

So suppose that we have 2 Actions ActionA and get_menu Action The jsp page for the result of ActionA calls get_menu to generate the menus. So suppose that ActionA sets a variable groups and get_menu also uses a groups variable... ActionA's variable will overtake get_menu's variable. I tried many solutions and even jsp:inculde doesnt help:(...

• Would watching a file for changes or redundantly querying that file be more efficient?

  I am wondering whether watching a file/directory for changes using the FileSystemWatcher class is extremely memory intensive. I am developing a desktop application in C# that will be running behind the scenes continuously on low-performance computers, and I need some way of checking to see if various files have changed. I can think of a few solutions: Watch the directories using FileSystemWatcher. Run a timed thread on an interval that goes through and manually checks this. Check manually every time the actionhandler thread runs (the program will occasionally do something, on an action). Any suggestions? Thanks! badPanda

• How can I programmatically find the IP address/netmask/gateway configured for a specific network dev

  Hi I would like to write a piece of code which checks, for each network device (e.g. eth0, lo, master devices) some statistics and configuration data about that device. I could find the statistics data (and most of the configuration data) in /sys/class/net/..., however, I couldn't find any C/C++ API or any entry in procfs/sysfs listing the inet addr, netmask and gateway. Some alternatives I checked: parsing the output from ifconfig/route/some other utilities: I don't want to start a subprocess every time I need to do the inspection. parsing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: will give me only the start-up configuration, and not the current state. Also, since this code is intended for a product in my workplace, where every external library is inspected thoroughly (meaning it will take me forever to add any external library) I prefer solutions which rely on Linux native API and not external libraries. • How to get or own your own IP address?

  The website we running let people register their own URL and redirect to our website to their user account. Lets it is something similar to Blogspot.com where users can have their own URL. The problem is that in order to do this we need to have static IP address for the DNS redirection to work. We can easily get static IP addresses from most hosting companies, but if we change our hosting company it means we will have to force all our users to change their DNS setting to our new IP address. This if very problematic. Is there a way of owning our own IP address that we can take it with us to wherever hosting company we decide to go with? Or there there other easier solutions out there?

• Executing <script> elements inserted with .innerHTML

  I've got a script that inserts some content into an element using innerHTML. The content could for example be: <script type="text/javascript">alert('test');</script> <strong>test</strong> Problem is that the code inside the <script> tag doesn't get executed. I googled it a bit but there were no apparent solutions. If I inserted the content using jQuery $(element).append(content);the script parts got eval'd before being injected into the DOM. Has anyone got a snippet of code that executes all the <script> elements? The jQuery code was a bit complex so I couldn't really figure out how it was done.

  I want to start automating more of my web development process so I'm looking for a build system. I write mostly PHP apps on Mac OS X and deploy Linux servers over FTP. A lot of my clients have basic hosting providers so shell access to their servers is typically not available, however remote MySQL access is usually present. Here is what I want to do with a build system: When Building: Lint JavaScript Files Validate CSS Files Validate HTML Files Minify and concatenate JS and CSS files Verify PHP Syntax Set Debug/Production flags When Deploying Checkout latest version from SVN Run build process Upload files to server via FTP Run SQL scripts on remote DB I realize this is a lot of work to automate but I think it would be worth it. So what is the best way to start down this path? Is there a system that can handle builds and deploys, or should I search for separate solutions? What systems would you recommend?

  On a daily basis I: use multiple workstations running either Linux, Windows, or MacOS X edit files on additional Linux hosts that are not any of the workstations mentioned above The only common element here is that the internet connects all of these hosts: workstations and servers. I can keep all of the config files in sync on my workstations too and can run an X server on all of them. What's the right way of running emacs? I don't want to sacrifice any features. In my ideal world I can type 'emacs foo.txt' on a remote host and some magic happens via X forwarding to display the file in my workstation's existing emacs session. Non-solutions tramp: when I'm manipulating a remote host an editor is just part of my workflow. I need a terminal open so I can run other commands quickly. tramp is all wrong for this. ncurses emacs: sucks, I want the graphical kind If you don't have a positive answer to my question, please don't just guess.   I'm curious as to any solutions out there for addressing enum heirarchies. I'm working through some docs on Entity Framework 4 and trying to apply it to a simple inventory tracking program. The possible types for inventory to fall into are as follows: INVENTORY ITEM TYPES: Hardware PC Desktop Server Laptop Accessory Input (keyboards, scanners etc) Output (monitors, printers etc) Storage (USB sticks, tape drives etc) Communication (network cards, routers etc) Software What recommendations are there for handling enums in a situation like this? Are enums even the solution? I don't really want to have a ridiculously normalised database for such a relatively simple experiment (eg tables for InventoryType, InventorySubtype, InventoryTypeToSubtype etc). I don't really want to over-complicate my data model with each subtype being inherited even though no additional properties or methods are included (except PC types which would ideally have associated accessories and software but that's probably out of scope here). It feels like there should be a really simple, elegant solution to this but I can't put my finger on it. Any assistance or input appreciated!

• Office Interop addins installer?

  I have three C# Solutions in Visual Stuido 2008, one each for Word, Excel and PowerPoint using interop to hook various events. In each Solution, I have exactly one class, the one created by default when using File - New - Project - Visual C# - Office - 2007. Now that I have my addins working properly, it's time to create an installer. I understand that I may also have to distribute the PIAs. I would like my installer to register itself such that it can be uninstalled via the normal Add/Remove Programs mechanism. My organization is somewhat standardized around WiX for creating installers, but I'm open to any suggestions. How do I produce an MSI or EXE capable of installing my addins? GUI/wizard for the installer is not necessary. I'm happy to RTFM - so far all the tutorials I've found only explain how to create the project and do some of the coding. Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms? Thanks in advance for any help!

• Mysql adapter for Zend_Translate

  Hi everybody, I'm currently in the planning phase of a rather large project that I'll develop in the Zend Framework. One of the problems I'm facing is that the customers will want to translate not only the content but also the interface. I'm currently using gettext and poedit to manage my language files but this is not an option for the customer as they, for one, want have FTP access to the site. Hence, I'm thinking of a mysql back end with an interface in the front end for the customer to manage his own translations of the interface. There is however still no mysql adapater for Zend_Translate. So, does anybody now of an adapter script for Zend_Translate so it can work with a mysql table? Or any arguments against using mysql and possible other solutions for this problem?

  I have looked through a number of solutions to emulating "Group concat" functionality in SQL Server. I wanted to make a more human readable solution though and I can't work out how to do it. I have a view: ParentID | ChildName Which contains the records, for example: 1 | Max 1 | Jessie 2 | Steven 2 | Lucy 2 | Jake 3 | Mark I want to "Group Concat" these to get: 1 | Max and Jessie 2 | Steven, Lucy and Jake 3 | Mark So If there is only 1 child, just return name, if there are more than one, concat the last 2 with an ' and ' and all others with a ', '. I am a bit stuck on how to do this without resorting to CLR, which I don't want to do. I am happy with a function - but speed is an issue and how do I determine the child number so I can choose between ' and ', ', ' or ''?

• parsing raw email in php

  i'm looking for good/working/simple to use php code for parsing raw email into parts. i've written a couple of brute force solutions, but everytime, one small change/header/space/something comes along and my whole parser fails and the project falls apart. and before i get pointed at PEAR/PECL, i need actual code. my host has some screwy config or something, i can never seem to get the .so's to build right. if i do get the .so made, some difference in path/environment/php.ini doesnt always make it available (apache vs cron vs cli) oh, and one last thing, i'm parsing the raw email text, NOT pop3, and NOT imap. its being piped into the php script via a .qmail email redirect. i'm not expecting SOF to write it for me, i'm looking for some tips/starting points on doing it "right". this is one of those "wheel" problems that i know has already been solved.

I find that when I come up against a complex problem I sometimes implement a solution that I feel could have been better had I analyzed the problem in a different way.   Project a cubic bezier p1,p2,p3,p4 onto the line p1,p4. When p2 or p3 does not project onto the line segment between p1 and p4, the curve will bulge out from the anchor points. Is there a way to calculate the T value where the tangent of the curve is perpendicular to the anchor line? This could also be stated as finding the T values where the projected curve is farthest from the center of the line segment p1,p4. When p2 and p3 project onto the line segment, then the solutions are 0 and 1 respectively. Is there an equation for solving the more interesting case? The T value seems to depend only on the distance of the mapped control points from the anchor line segment. I can determine the value by refining guesses, but I am hoping there is a better way.

  Hello! i need to extract terms with highest frequencies from several lucene indexes, to use them for some semantic analysis. So, I want to get maybe top 30 most occuring terms(still did not decide on threshold, i will analyze results) and their per-index counts. I am aware that I might lose some precision because of potentionally dropped duplicates, but for now, lets say i am ok with that. So for the proposed solutions, (needless to say maybe) speed is not important, since I would do static analysis, I would put accent on simplicity of implementation because im not so skilled with Lucene (not the programming guru too :/ ) and cant wrap my mind around many concepts of it.. I can not find any code samples from something similar, so all concrete advices (code, pseudocode, links to code samples...) I will apretiate very much!!! Thank you!
