  • Returning Meaningful Exceptions from a WCF Project

    I am pretty new to WCF in general. What little experience I have comes from using fairly simple .SVC services in ASP.NET web applications. I tried experimenting with using a WCF Project for the first time, and ran into a major show-stopper. As I’m sure most are aware, for some strange reason, in a web application in which the customErrors mode is set to On , services (both .ASMX and .SVC) will not return exception details to the client. Instead, the exception and stack trace are emptied, and the message always reads “There was an error processing the request”, which is not at all helpful. When services are directly hosted inside the web application itself, it’s easy to work around this restriction by placing the services in a dedicated folder, and setting for that folder. However, I’m running into this same issue with exceptions not being returned from services that live in a separate WCF project. Thing is, I don’t know how to work around that. In a nutshell: I need to get my WCF Project services to bubble REAL exceptions to the client – or at least, the original exception message, instead of “There was an error processing the request”.

    i have a scenario where in i need to send an xml as a tag content in a SOAP request message to a webservice for example <arg_1><xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><sometag><somemoretag>abcd</somemoretag></sometag></arg_1></code> arg_1 happens to be an String parameter to a webservice. So i bring in a CDATA section for this <arg_1><![CDATA[<xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><sometag><somemoretag>abcd</somemoretag></sometag>]]></arg_1> But this keeps throwing me an exception org.xml.sax.SAXException: WSWS3084E: Error: SimpleDeserializer encountered a child element, which is NOT expected, in something it was trying to deserialize. Message being parsed: I keep getting this exception. Has anyone seen this before??

  • Logging exceptions in WCF with IErrorHandler inside HandleError or ProvideFault?

    I'm using IErrorHandler to do exception handling in WCF and now I want to log the exceptions, along with the stack trace and the user that caused the exception. I've read everywhere to put the logging in the HandleError method, and not the ProvideFault method. My question is, why? The only way I can see to get the user that caused the exception is: OperationContext.Current.IncomingMessageProperties.Security.ServiceSecurityContext.PrimaryIdentity ...But this only seems to work inside ProvideFault, and not inside HandleError. Is there a way to get the user inside HandleError?

  • iphone Dev - activity indicator with NSThread not working on Nav controller table view

    I really can't get this to work, basically when my JSON feeds loads I want the indicator to show, then hide when it's stopped. It loads top level menu items 1st "Publishing, Broadcasting, Marketing Services", then when Broadcasting is selected it loads a feed using the JSON framework hosted on Google. Round this load I call startIndicator and stopIndicator using the NSThread.   • Stopping background services during an android activity

    I am developing an android game right now, and it requires very precise timing and synchronization. That said, it is essential that there is no lag during the game. However I sometimes get lag spikes in the game, and I know its not the GC because I have run the ddms tool, and eliminated all the GC calls. However, I do see alot of background services popping up in my ddms logcat. Is there anyway to pause all services when my game is running? I would appreciate any other solutions. Thanks

  • confused about python decorators

    I have a class that has an output() method which returns a matplotlib Figure instance. I have a decorator I wrote that takes that fig instance and turns it into a Django response object. My decorator looks like this: class plot_svg(object): def __init__(self, view): self.view = view def __call__(self, *args, **kwargs): print args, kwargs fig = self.view(*args, **kwargs) canvas=FigureCanvas(fig) response=HttpResponse(content_type='image/svg+xml') canvas.print_svg(response) return response and this is how it was being used: def as_avg(self): return plot_svg(self.output)() The only reason I has it that way instead of using the "@" syntax is because when I do it with the "@": @plot_svg def as_svg(self): return self.output() I get this error: as_svg() takes exactly 1 argument (0 given) I'm trying to 'fix' this by putting it in the "@" syntax but I can't figure out how to get it working. I'm thinking it has something to do with self not getting passed where it's supposed to...

  • Does my fat-client application belong in the MVC pattern?

    The web-based application I’m currently working on is growing arms and legs! It’s basically an administration system which helps users to keep track of bookings, user accounts, invoicing etc. It can also be accessed via a couple of different websites using a fairly crude API. The fat-client design loosely follows the MVC pattern (or perhaps MVP) with a php/MySQL backend, Front Controller, several dissimilar Page Controllers, a liberal smattering of object-oriented and procedural Models, a confusing bunch of Views and templates, some JavaScripts, CSS files and Flash objects. The programmer in me is a big fan of the principle of “Separation of Concerns” and on that note, I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to separate and combine the various concerns as the project grows and more people contribute to it. The problem we’re facing is that although JavaScript (or Flash with ActionScript) is normally written with the template, hence part of the View and decoupled from the Controller and Model, we find that it actually encompasses the entire MVC pattern... Swap an image with an onmouseover event - that’s Behaviour. Render a datagrid - we’re manipulating the View. Send the result of reordering a list via AJAX - now we’re in Control. Check a form field to see if an email address is in a valid format - we’re consulting the Model. Is it wise to let the database people write up the validation Model with jQuery? Can the php programmers write the necessary Control structures in JavaScript? Can the web designers really write a functional AJAX form for their View? Should there be a JavaScript overlord for every project? If the MVC pattern could be applied to the people instead of the code, we would end up with this: Model - the database boffins - “SELECT * FROM mind WHERE interested IS NULL” Control - pesky programmers - “class Something extends NothingAbstractClass{…}” View - traditionally the domain of the graphic/web designer - “” …and a new layer: Behaviour - interaction and feedback designer - “CSS3 is the new black…” So, we’re refactoring and I’d like to stick to best practice design, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel, so would anyone have any hints or tips as to what pattern I should be looking at or any code samples from someone who’s already done the dirty work? As the programmer guy, how can I rewrite the app for backend and front end whilst keeping the two separate? And before you ask, yes I’ve looked at Zend, CodeIgnitor, Symfony, etc., and no, they don’t seem to cross the boundary between server logic and client logic!

    I've been doing things like this in the clean method: if self.cleaned_data['type'].organized_by != self.cleaned_data['organized_by']: raise forms.ValidationError('The type and organization do not match.') if self.cleaned_data['start'] > self.cleaned_data['end']: raise forms.ValidationError('The start date cannot be later than the end date.') But then that means that the form can only raise one of these errors at a time. Is there a way for the form to raise both of these errors?     I realised double checked locking is flawed in java due to the memory model, but that is usually associated with the singleton pattern and optimizing the creation of the singleton. What about under this case in objective-c: I have a boolean flag to determine if my application is streaming data or not.     I've written a descendant of QTreeView with multiple columns. I want to create a popup menu that appears whe nthe user right-clicks over the column headers. I have tried catching signals from QTreeView for this, but QTreeView doesn't seem to emit signals on the headers. QTreeView.header() does. I therefore believe I must either: 1: connect one of QHeaderView's signals to a popup function - I have been unable to find a signal that is triggered on a single right click - I have tried sectionClicked, sectionHandleDoubleClicked, sectionDoubleClicked, sectionPressed (not surprised the double click functions didn't catch a single right click - but they do catch a double right click) self.header().sectionClicked.connect(self.headerMenu) self.header().sectionHandleDoubleClicked.connect(self.headerMenu) self.header().sectionDoubleClicked.connect(self.headerMenu) self.header().sectionPressed.connect(self.headerMenu) or, 2: write a descendant of QHeaderView with my own MousePressEvent function, and use that for my headers. I have so far been unsuccessful in connecting the new header class to the QTreeView descendant. I keep getting a Segmentation Fault on runtime, with no more explanation. #in DiceView's init, where DiceHeaders is the QHeaderView descendant self.setHeader(DiceHeaders()) Any ideas?

    Anybody know of an IFilter that can index source code files beyond what the "Plain Text" filter can provide, with possibly a custom "Property Set" specific to programming? For example, I have 835MB in 41,000 files and 8,200 folders in my "Code Library" folder. I would like to perform searches such as "select distinct attributes on properties" or "select class exceptions" or "select classes with nested private classes". Preferrably, the IFilter can distinguish between various languages, so I can perform a query like "select class exceptions in VB.NET" or "select 'resume next' in VBScript". Other Examples "select all enum from folder('microsoft source code') in namespace 'system.io'"

  • Start a short video when an incoming call is detected, first case using the emulator.

    I want to be able to start a short video on an incoming phone call. The video will loop until the call is answered. I've loaded the video onto the emulator sdcard then created the appropriate level avd with a path to the sdcard.iso file on disk. Since I'm running on a Mac OS x snow leopard I am able to confirm the contents of the sdcard. All testing has be done on the Android emulator. In a separate project TestVideo I created an activity that just launches the video from the sdcard. That works as expected. Then I created another project TestIncoming that creates an activity that creates a PhoneStateListener that overrides the onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) method. In the onCallStateChanged() method I check if state == TelephonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING. If true I create an Intent that starts the video. I'm actually using the code from the TestVideo project above. Here is the code snippet. PhoneStateListener callStateListener = new PhoneStateListener() { @Override public void onCallStateChanged(int state, String incomingNumber) { if(state == TelelphonyManager.CALL_STATE_RINGING) { Intent launchVideo = new Intent(MyActivity.this, LaunchVideo.class); startActivity(launchVideo); } } }; The PhoneStateListener is added to the TelephonyManager.listen() method like so, telephonyManager.listen(callStateListener, PhoneStateListener.LISTEN_CALL_STATE); Here is the part I'm unclear on, the manifest.   • GUI freezes when executing def function. Use threads?

    Hi, I've made a small program which has 2 buttons and each does certain thing. Here's a simplified version of the code. Thing is it works fine except that the button freezes and stays in a clicked position and whole GUI freezes until the command is completed. As far as I know threads would be best to use in this situation, but I have no idea how to implement it in this example.     What is the best way to survey and detect bad users behavior or attacks like deny of services or exploits on my web app ? I know server's statistics (like Awstats) are very useful for that kind of purpose, specially to see 3XX, 4XX and 5XX errors (here's an Awstats example page) which are often bots or bad intentioned users that try well-known bad or malformed URLs. Is there others (and betters) ways to analyze and detect that kind of attack tentative ? Note : I'm speaking about URL based attacks, not attacks on server's component (like database or TCP/IP).
