  • Internet Explorer / Windows 7 does not want to show HTML file from local network drive

    Setup: I have Windows 7 running inside VirtualBox on Mac OS X host. I have a shared drive with some HTML files, that I am mounting as a local drive W: in Windows, from the VirtualBox server \VBOXSVR. I want to look at them with a browser in Windows. Chrome in Windows 7 opens and shows those HTML files just fine (file:///W:/welcome.html). But Internet Explorer does not, and shows this error instead of the files: Internet Explorer cannot display the web page What you can try: [button Diagnose Connection Problems] More information This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including: Internet connectivity has been lost. The website is temporarily unavailable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable. The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain. If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section. For the internet zone in the status bar, it shows: Internet | Protected Mode: On IE settings are a mystery to me, and I could possibly get it to work by tweaking IE settings, but I don't know which ones. How do I make IE show the same files that Chrome is happy to show? (Chrome showing them means that the files themselves are fine, there is something about the setup that just makes IE be a diva.)

  • Why does my computer crash randomly?

    The other day I went out to my van to get my Tower and when I opened the trunk it fell out. I brought it into the house and opened it, and everything looked ok. When I started it up, about 1-3 minutes afterwards it would crash. It did this over and over until I reseated the cooler. Everything seemed normal again, until after about 10 minutes of gameplay (any game), it would crash. I reseated my GPU + reinstalled the drivers, however I still get the same error. A while back, I'd check my 'Windows Rating' periodically, and all of them were in the '6.0-6.9' range except for my hard disk usage (always been like that [not relative]). Today I went in and looked, and my Processor and Memory was rated 5.4. I reseated my cpu and my memory, refreshed the windows rating, and then my processor and memory went from 5.4, to 5.1. A few minutes ago I reseated them once again, and now it's back to 5.4. Note: Not sure if this is relevant to the issue, but I updated my bios earlier today I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but I'm getting aggravated at the problem.   • Raid-1 Western Digital Green AARS, cloning and WD Align Utility

    Hello all, My current setup runs on top of 2x Western Digital 2500KS drives on Raid-1, using the motherboard's 780G raid controller, on WinXP. Everything is fine, but the drives are a bit noisy. I am considering buying 2x WD6400AARS disks which are the 640GB slower 'green' drives, but also feature the Advanced Formatting 4KB sectors. This means that for WinXP the partition will have to be aligned to work properly, else there is a performance penalty. There are 2 questions here: The Green drives from WD are all slower and are (according to WD) susceptible to drop-out's from the controller. Has anyone any experience in this matter? Is there a possibility the controller will drop a drive? If so, can i do anything about it? Secondly, western digital gives a utility to perform the alignment on the partition. The thing is, will the utility see the drives in question as the operating system only sees 1 logical disk? I will be making the transition using a cloning tool (most probably norton ghost) unless i don't find a solution or a clear answer, in which case i'll just buy a win 7 license and make a clean install... thx in advance

  • iPhone 3.1 Black Screen

    Since I've updated my 3G iPhone to 3.1, it will become unresponsive after ~4-5 hours. It looks like it's off, but it's not. None of the buttons do anything that I can see. The only way I can get a screen back is to do a hard reset (Power + Home). Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do to fix it? I've had it 3 happen 3 times already. Very annoying. Apparently, the Discussions forum on Apple.com also shows lots of people are having the same problem. One guy said he did a restore and that fixed it for him, which I haven't tried yet because many others also tried that and it didn't help. A few others have said turning off WIFI fixes it for them, so I'm going to try that today. Another thing I've noticed is that now, when I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook Pro, iTunes 9 does not launch. It used to before the update. ** Further update and possible solution ** I left my iPhone plugged into my Macbook Pro yesterday while at work, and didn't use it much throughout the day. I noticed it didn't lock up once. I suspect this was because it was connected to a power source. I continued to use my iPhone with no problem yesterday and today. Still no lockups as of now. I personally think this was Spotlight and/or Genius "doing it's thing" from a new install. Kinda like an OS upgrade on your Mac... Spotlight has to rebuild itself and those first couple of hours can be kinda sluggish. This would be even more so on the iPhone where processing power is limited, and I'm sure the processor is clocked down a bit while on battery power, which would further amplify the problem. Again, just my guess. My iPhone is working fine now. ** Final Solution ** Update to 3.1.2. Problem solved.

An example: TEAC TV manual EU2816STF BTW: I am using Adobe Reader - perhaps an alternative viewer might help?

  • CPU Test Similar to Memtest?

    I need an easy way to do system stability tests. I have come to rely on Prime95 which does a fantastic job of proving stability (or instability) very quickly; but it requires an OS installed. I would like something like Prime95 that stresses both CPU and RAM (maybe PCI-Ex bus also?) but runs in a nice bootable binary like Memtest86+ does, so I can boot it from a thumbdrive. Does such a thing exist?

  • Scheduled task to map a network drive runs, but doesn't map the drive

    I have a task set up to run whenever the computer is logged onto that deletes all network folders and maps a network drive. Here is what is in the batch file: @echo off net use * /delete /y net use b: \\Server\Share /user:DOMAIN\Username password exit When the computer is restarted or logged off and back on, the task runs fine (according to the scheduled tasks window saying when it ran last) but the mapped drive doesn't show up. I'll open the command prompt and type "net use" and it simply says "There are no entries in the list". If I then right click on the task and run it, it works and the mapped drive shows up. I've checked the log and nothing shows up. I've tried adding a timer in the batch file so it waits 10 seconds (ping 1.1.1.1 -n 1 -w 10000nul) thinking that maybe the network wasn't connected, but that didn't work. What else can I try? Thanks!

I was expecting to do this with an Audit setting on one of the MS Security Essentials folders but I wasn't sure which one and how to avoid getting swamped with messages. What folder or files should I audit to track definition updates (or corruption) in the security events or is there a better approach?

  • Permission denied when running Rails app in VirtualBox Ubuntu guest with files on Windows host

    I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared (Samba) from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents. But when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file) - why is that? Are there any major conceptual flaws with this approach? Would I be better off using the VBox "shared folders" function?

  • Linux wget, how to display progress percentage after session has reload?

    I am running debian Squeeze in console mode on a plug computer. I control it opening an SSH session from a Windows machine, on the same local network. I started downloading a large file using wget. What I get is a console progress bar showing the percentage of data downloaded, file size, and download rate. When I close the session, debian is still running and downloading. Fine. But When I close and reopen a session, how can see which amount of data was downloaded, using a linux command ? thanks.

  • How do I totally get rid of Norton Utilities

    Alright, so I treated myself to a new computer for Christmas. Windows7 64-bit, yada yada yada. Uninstalled Norton Security using Windows7 uninstall program, installed Microsoft Security Essentials in it's place. From a cold boot, I still get the screen from Norton asking me if I wanna sign up for the free six months, which I don't. Guess Windows7 uninstall left behind some pieces. Anyone know how I can get rid of this Norton screen? EDIT: @ Revolter: Great. Used Norton Removal Tool Successfully. Now I get a different pop-up window ALWAYS reminding me if I want to activate Norton Online Backup. What does one have to do to FINALLY get rid of these people?

  • Generating a record of the full(-ish) package management state

    I'm about to make some system changes and I'd like to have a record of my current happy system state. Is there a convenient way to create a record of this? I'd like to keep track of info like currently installed packages and their versions which packages are pinned at what version which source (as in /etc/apt/sources.list) they were installed from whether they were installed directly or automatically installed as a dependency of a different package "unknown unknowns": ie stuff that I don't know that I should be keeping track of but which may be important when trying to figure out why something doesn't work In short, I'd like to keep as much of the aptitude database as possible. What's the best way to do this? It would be nice if the resulting records were easily readable, though this is not really essential. It would be extra nice if it were readily versionable through an SCM tool like git. There is a superuser question that partially answers this, but it only provides the list of currently installed packages.

  • Outlook 2010, 2007 Sync problems after migration from SMTP to Exchange

    Our organization recently switched from an SMTP server to an Exchange server, since then several user's Outlook's are not synchronizing their emails as expected with the Exchange server. Our move over from an SMTP server to an Exchange server consisted of adding the new Exchange account alongside the existing SMTP account, drag-dropping/copy-pasting folders client-side from the SMTP account in the folder pane in outlook, to the newly created Exchange account. The problem happens when a user moves an email to a folder from their inbox or another folder. At this point the email disappears from Outlook client side. Re-syncing the folder, send/receive, closing/opening outlook and even system reboots do not make this email reappear. The Outlook web interface (OWA) reports the email is in fact in the folder they placed it in, and is not deleted. Doing a "search all mail items" for the emails shows that the email is still there; not deleted nor removed. To add to the confusion, when new folders are created and the email is placed in these folders, the synchronization happens without any issue both client side and server side. As the emails are appearing server side, we are confident to presume this is a client side issue. We have tried adding/removing accounts on one system which resulted in the same issue. This was a very long and slow process due to the sheer volume of emails (20gig+ from most users). We have tried reinstalling outlook restoring accounts from back-ups which has not resolved the issue. We also tried upgrading one system from outlook 2007 to outlook 2010 which, again, did not resolve the issue. We have experienced issues with a lot of emails disappearing during the copy-over process in which I'm not convinced it was the best route of migration, but nonetheless we are where we are. Can anyone suggest potential avenues of solutions to resolve this issue? Thank you.   • try to attach to a database file but can't browse folder which contains the file

    I am trying to attach to database file (*.mdf, *.ldf) that I placed in the same folder as all my other SQL Server databases. I begin the attach by attempting to browse to the folder which contains the db files as well as all of my active database files. I select "attach Database" and click the "Add" button to add a database to the list of databases to attach to. When I do so, I get this error: TITLE: Locate Database Files - BESI-CHAD ------------------------------ D:\SQLdata\MSSQL10_50.SQLBESI\MSSQL\DATA Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The path is correct and, as I mentioned, it contains all of my other database files so I wouldn't think that permissions should be an issue, but here is what I see for that folder: Any idea why I cannot browse to that folder and attach to the db files that I have place there?

  • Lag spikes at full CPU usage, lagy mouse, maybe video card

    My PC specs: Motherboard Name - Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 CPU Type - DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, 1800 MHz (9 x 200) OS - Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate OS Kernel Type - 32-bit OS Version - 6.1.7601 I bougth a new video card one month ago. GeForce 210. I didn't have any problems. I wanted to overclock it, in other words: "Play with it". So I installed Gigabyte EasyBoost from CD and overclocked the GPU 590 + 110 mhz, memory to max to 960mhz from 800mhz. Benchmarks showed a little bit bigger score. Then I overclocked shader clock from 1405 to [..] (don't remeber really). So I was playing Modern Warfare 2 when off sudden computer froze when I wanted to select team, I was afk before that. I had to reset CMOS. After that I had problems with Skype: unread messages and no sound. Then I figured it out that when ever I open EasyBoost - Skype starts to glitch again. Now I use EVGA Precission X. Now after a month, I cleaned computer and closed the case, it was open all the time. I started to overclock GPU clock only (just a bit) because there was no problems that would stop me. So sometimes on heavy CPU load graphics starts to lag. Dragging a window is painful to watch too. Sometimes the screen freezes for 5 to 10 seconds (I can see that hard disk activity is maximal). You may say that CPU fault it is, isn't it? But sometimes lag spikes starts randomly when CPU load is at maximum. All 3 benchmark softwares (PerformanceTest, NovaBench and MSI Kombustor) shows that performance of my video card has dropped about 25%. BUT! CPU score is lower too. I ignored these problems but when I refreshed Windows Experience Index I was shocked. Month before (in latvian language but not so hard to understand): Now 01.04.2012 (upgraded RAM): This happened when I tried to capture Minecraft with Fraps on underclocked GPU to 580mhz (def: 590mhz): All drivers are up to date. Average CPU temperature from 55°C to 75°C (at 70°C sometimes starts these lag spikes). Video card's tempratures are from 45°C to 60°C (very hard to reach 60°C). So my hope is that the video card is fine, cause this card is very new and I want to upgrade CPU anyways. Aplogies for my mistakes in vocabulary (I am trying to type this as fast I can). Update 02.04.2012 - 7:21 Forgot one thing, my hard disk is extrimly slow and I will upgrade it this week or next week so I will be installing same OS again. I am multi-tasker but I can't do much because of 1.8 GHz CPU and slow hard drive (Model ID - WDC WD800JD-60JRC0). The Windows Experience Index is back to normal. Actually "Spelu grafika" (Gaming graphics) are higher than month ago. During this test mouse was very lagy, but month ago there weren't any problems. WHY!?

  • How To Fix Samba File Permission Issues in Mac OSX

    I've had this problem for a long time, here is the basics of it... I use a mixed environment of Windows 7/8 computers with Mac OSX Lion/Mountain Lion. Whenever a Windows computer creates a file on a SMB share on the Mac it no longer has group permissions, only the person who created or updated it can access it. My solution has been to go onto the Mac system and reset permissions for the entire directory structure then everyone can see it again. About the only thing on this that I can find was for OSX pre Snow Leopard that mentioned editing the SMB.CONF file to fix their particular problem (similar to mine, http://www.gladsheim.com/blog/2009/09/19/osx-leopard-and-samba-permissions/). The problem is that now Lion and Mountion Lion no longer have an SMB.CONF file (another web search pointed to the com.apple.smbd.plist (http://kidsreturn.org/?s=smb.conf) but it's an XML file now and I'm not clear on what should be done to THAT to fix the problem. So, short of me writing an Applescript to run every hour to fix permissions, does anyone know a solution to this very frustrating problem? Thank you in advance for any advice or solutions you can offer!

  • Recover OffScreen Window in Windows 8

    Someone asked a very similar question in regards to window recovery for windows xp: Similar Recovery I'm using windows 8 (or 8.1 now). I run Dual Monitors. On Monitor 2 I sometimes have the input switched to something else other than the windows display (Mac or PS3). If there was a program that was displaying on Window #2 that does not have 'move' where I could potentially alt-space-m arrow keys. Is there another way to get that program to display on Window #1? I tried right click on the program and doesn't seem to be anything there. I tried Windows Key and Arrows. I Tried right click toolbar and cascade. I'm hoping this is a DUP or Softball question because this annoys the crap out of me. Thanks!!

I am using the following command on Mac, sudo scp ~/.ssh/mykey.rsa [email protected], there is no output from Mac command line. I am not sure whether the scp is success or not.     I usually do my web dev on a production server, now i need to bring some work at home. I have installed XAMPP on my laptop and it seems to work perfectly fine. Most of my project involves CURL enabled, I need to make my xampp application to access the internet. Perhaps give it some IP address and Gateway. I've seen documentation how to enable CURL on xampp, yet I'm struggling to find how to make XAMPP to have internet access. I'm not asking how to access my XAMPP remotely, I'm simply asking how to give internet connection to xampp application for my CURL and other social network API to work.
