  Am 18. November wurde in Augsburg der Channel Marketing Award 2010 verliehen. Gesucht wurden die besten Kampagnen der IT-Branche, mit denen wirtschaftlich und kreativ herausragende Marketing-Aktivitäten rund um das Partner Business umgesetzt wurden. In der Kategorie With/Through Partner hat Oracle mit der IT-Security Kampagne www.keine-aufregung.de hinter Xerox den 2. Platz belegt! Damit verwies „Keine Aufregung", durchgeführt von Bozana Pistorius im Januar 2010, Kampagnen von IBM, Corel und E-Plus auf die Plätze. Bilder der Kampagnen sind hier zu finden. • EVENT RECAP: Oracle Health Sciences Conference

  Monaco served as an intense location for this year's Oracle Health Sciences User Group conference.  It was a "Grand Prix" event with nearly 200 attendees from all over the world.  In a country famous for high performance race cars, luxury super yachts and lifestyles of the rich & famous, the conference was very Ellison-esque. I think the Superyachts were being paired with Exadata. The OSHUG staff were fantastic . Robin and Taylor (pictured left) from Drohan Management took care of all the details and were wonderful to get to know. I met with some real Oracle loyalists.  Stan Sachar,  I.T. Manager for Westat, and the Focus Group co-chair for Admin Configuration Mgmt (ACM).  Westat was an early adopter of Oracle Clinical for clinical trial projects with installations in 1997-98.  I had a chance to talk with Stan during the reception and he is an Oracle advocate and evangelist. He's invested in his career in using Oracle products. (Stan Sachar pictured right with Dick Wolnick from Oracle, on left) I also met with Mirco Becker from Grunenthal Gmbh.  He's been working with the Argus product for over 6 years.  He's a big user of Oracle Support. Mirco attended my support best practices session and was actively engaged and asked several questions.  He's excited to adopt those best practices and work more efficiently and effectively with Support. Finally, I thank the many who attended my session.  I admit, the beautiful weather and view of the ocean was a distraction, but nonetheless my mission was to provide you with all the necessary support resources for Health Sciences users. • Cannot compile GDB7.8 with Python support

  I am trying to install GDB7.8 with Python support. From the source folder, I am running ./configure --with-python When I did tab-complete from --with- I did not see Python in the list. But when I ran configure with that flag, it did not baulk. When I run make, it complains that Python is not found. checking for python2.7... no but Python is installed: $ which python python python2.7 python2.7-dbg-config python2 python2.7-dbg $ which python2.7 /usr/bin/python2.7 I compiled GDB without --with-python and things installed without error. I was under the impression that GDB7.8 had Python support without the need for special flags. But when I run: $gdb python (gdb) run test.py I get some sort of cannot import gdb Import error So then I tried calling "pi": (gdb) pi printf.py Python scripting is not supported in this copy of GDB. So... how do I get Python support in GDB7.8? is it actually not supported? Or should I not call "pi"?

• Where to find Hg/Git technical support?

  Posting this as a kind of a favour for a former coleague, so I don't know the exact circumstances, but I'll try to provide as much info as I can ... A friend from my old place of employment (maritime research institute; half government/commercial funding) has asked me if I could find out who provides technical support (commercial) for two major DVCS's of today - Git and Mercurial. They have been using VCS for years now (Subversion while I was there, don't know what they're using now - probably the same), and now they're renewing their software licences (they have to give a plan some time in advance for everything ... then it goes "through the system") and although they will be keeping Subversion as well, they would like to justify beginning of DVCS as an alternative system (most people root for Mercurial since it seems simpler; mostly engineers and physicians there who are not that interested in checking Git repos for corruption and the finer workings of Git, but I believe any one of the two could "pass") - but it has to have a price (can be zero; no problem there) and some sort of official technical support. It is a pro forma matter, but it has to be specified. Most of the people there are using one of the two already, but this has to be specified to be official. So, I'm asking you - do you know where could one go for Git or Mercurial technical support (can be commercial)? Technical forums and the like are out of the question. It has to work on the principle: - I have a problem. - I post a question with the details. - I get an answer in specified time. It can be "we cannot do that." but it has to be an official answer and given in agreed time. I'm sure by now most of you understand what I'm asking, but if not - post a comment or similar. Also, if you think of any reasons which could decide justification of introducing Git/Hg from an technical and administrative viewpoint, feel free to write them down also.

• .NET Demon support for VS 11 dark theme

  I'm pleased to announce that .NET Demon will be shipping simultaneously with Visual Studio 11, whenever it ends up being released. That means we're going to make sure that a version of .NET Demon is released very near to the Visual Studio 11 final release which supports the new version of VS fully. The interesting part of this support is going to be the new dark theme of VS, which I'm looking forward to using. I'm told dark colours reduce eye strain for developers. It's important that extensions like .NET Demon switch to a dark theme when the rest of the IDE changes, or the dark theme will look silly. Unfortunately, none of my favourite extensions look right in the dark theme yet, so even though I use Visual Studio 11 beta for my day-to-day development already, I can't use the dark theme. Luckily .NET Demon uses WPF throughout, and the team at Microsoft are helping us to use the WPF Style system to make it easy for me to implement the support without having to add colour attributes to all the controls manually. We should have dark theme support in .NET Demon in the next month or so.

• Connect Team Foundation Service/TFS 2012 with Visual Studio 2010 &amp; Visual Studio 2008

  Hello, Microsoft finally released the Team Foundation Service in late October 2012 after its long time in the preview phase. I was already using the TFS Preview which was free but I was happy to see Microsoft releasing the Team Foundation Service also FREE for upto 5 users. Isn't that great news? I know there are bunch of other free source control repositories (Github, Bitbucket, SVN etc.) out there but I somehow like TFS better. Also the other good thing about the final release was that I didn’t had to do any kind of migration of my code from preview to final release version. Just changed the TFS connection URL and it worked like a charm. Anyways, if you are a startup with small team and need some awesome Source Control along with all the good Project Management, Continuous Integration (Build, Test, Deploy), Team Collaboration, Agile/Scrum planning etc. features than Team Foundation Service is your answer. Microsoft has not yet released their pricing for more than 5 users and will be releasing it sometime in early 2013. What if as of now you have a team more than 5 users and you want to use Team Foundation Service, the good news is you can use it for FREE but when they release the final pricing, you will have to transition to the paid plan. Lot of story, getting to the point, connecting to Team Foundation Service with Visual Studio 2012 is straight forward and would work out of the box but it wont for previous versions of Visual Studio. You will have to upgrade to the latest service pack first and than install the forward compatibility pack. (1st : Service Packs & 2nd: Forward Compatibility packs) For Visual Studio 2010: Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2010 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 and Team Foundation Service.         For Visual Studio 2008: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2008 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 & Team Foundation Service. Restart your system. Visual Studio 2008 will not work if you only put https://xxx.visualstudio.com. You will have to put your collection name too as shown below.       By the way, it doesn’t matter if you are an Apple Application Developer or Android App Developer, you can still use Team Foundation Service as your source control. • ATI Radeon HD 6870 Driver fails to install default-policy.sh does not support version

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, with everything updated completely. I'm using Ubuntu Classic, because Unity fails to run, supposedly because of my video card. The drivers for the Radeon HD 6870 series is apparently lacking, but I found a post stating the newest version has full support for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal. That post is slightly old, so i grabbed 11.3 for Ubuntu x86 off the ATI website. When I run the installation program, I receive the following error: > ./ati-driver-installer-11-3-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.uREFoO Verifying archive integrity... All good.   I'm trying to associate .doc and .docx files to MS Word 2010 using the same .desktop file as Unity dash and launcher, so I can use the Word icon in launcher. I tried: [Desktop Entry] Name=Microsoft Word 2010 Exec=env WINEPREFIX="/home/nastys/.mso2010" wine "C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office14/WINWORD.exe" %f Type=Application StartupNotify=true Comment=Create and edit professional-looking documents such as letters, papers, reports, and booklets by using Microsoft Word. Icon=29F5_WINWORD.0 StartupWMClass=WINWORD.EXE MimeType=application/msword; application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document; Using this .desktop file I can launch Word with its icon in Unity launcher, but if I associate .doc files to the same file Word will launch, but it won't open the .doc file. If I associate .doc files to any .desktop file generated by Wine it will launch Word, but it will use Wine icon.

  I ran into an error message in SharePoint 2010 that took me a few minutes to figure out.  I was working on a demo of SharePoint 2010’s managed metadata and getting an error when I was adding a Managed Metadata column to a library.  A little Google research turned up this blog post: The Taxonomy feature (Feature ID "73EF14B1-13A9-416b-A9B5-ECECA2B0604C") has not been activated. As Michal Pisarek pointed out last June, you get the error because the Taxonomy feature isn’t activated.  Like Michal, I’m not sure how this happened to my installation, but the fix he documented works. (Activating the feature using STSADM)

• How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps.   Today is a very exciting day: After the official release of Windows 8 (and Microsoft Surface!) on Friday, and the official release of Windows Phone 8 on Monday, the Build conference is starting! This is the conference in which we will learn all about the developer experience for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. • Areas of support needed when attempting to roll out a new software system

  In general, I think most people tend to be resistant to new systems or even change because they fear the unknown. Change means that their normal routine will be interrupted until they can learn to conform to the new routine due to the fact that it has transformed to the old routine. In addition, the feeling of failure is also generates a resistance to change. Why would a worker want to move from a process that has worked successfully for them in the past? Their fears over shadow any benefits a change in a new system or business process will bring to their work life. Areas of support needed when attempting to roll out a new software system: Executive/Upper Management Support If there is no support from the top of an organization how will employees be supportive of the new system? Proper Training Employees need to train on a new system prior to its rollout. The more training employee’s receive on any new system will directly impact how comfortable they will be with the system and are more accepting of the change because they can see how the changes will benefit them. Employee Incentives One way to re-enforce the need for employees to use a new system is to offer incentives to ensure that the system will be used. Employee Discipline/Termination If employees are adamantly refusing to use the new system after several warnings then they need to be formally reprimanded.  If this does not work the employer is forced to replace the employees.

• Will the MacBook Pro Early 2011 work better with Ubuntu than the Air Late 2010?

  I got this late 2010 11" MacBook Air. I'm having issues with NVIDIA graphics, especially with GNOME Shell. I'm thinking about selling this to switch to the new MacBook Pro, particularly the entry level 13" (see specs here), because of the Intel HD Graphics 3000. I assume that it will be more FOSS-friendly. I just want to point out that there are non-negotiable reasons why I'm keeping an Apple hardware at the moment, so let's keep this on topic. Will the MacBook Pro Early 2011 work better with Ubuntu than the Air Late 2010? Any other factors than the graphics hardware? Should we expect better NVIDIA graphics anytime soon?

Google vient de donner des nouvelles de son futur système d'exploitation maison : Chrome OS. En cours de développement, sa version finale devrait être disponible au cours du quatrième trimestre 2010. Les premiers ordinateurs équipés de l'OS devraient donc arriver cet automne dans les boutiques. Le système étant basé sur Linux, il sera vraisemblablement distribué gratuitement à l'instar des autres distributions. Cependant, il se peut que seuls les machines d'une liste établie par Google soient gratifiés de pilotes les rendant totalement compatib...
