  In a code review I came across the following code that contains the following: # Python bug that renders the unicode identifier (0xEF 0xBB 0xBF) # as a character. # If untreated, it can prevent the page from validating or rendering # properly. bom = unicode( codecs.BOM_UTF8, "utf8" ) r = r.replace(bom, '') This is in a function that passes a string to Response object (Django or Flask). Is this still a bug that needs this fix in Python 2.7 or 3? Something tells me it isn't, but I thought I'd ask because I don't know this problem very well. Thanks for reading.

• Sliding & Fading controls on a C# form

  Hey there, I'm trying to implement a way to slide&fade controls around (more than one at the same time possibly) elegantly. So in other words, say i had a picture in the top left corner, and a texbox in the bottom right corner, i'd like to be able to have them slide. not just snap. slide, to the opposite corners and replace eachothers position. Ive been working for awhile but have not come up with anything efficient, even just some of the basic math calculations would be a great start.

• Is it possible to disable the iPhone's automatic hyperlinks?

  We send out a notification email whenever we have "phishing" emails reported to us. In these emails, we include a copy-paste of the text inside the original phishing email as a sample of what is reported to us. Our code strips all hyperlinks out of the email via PHP, but still includes (in plain text) the link. When users receive this email in their client (Thunderbird, Outlook, Horde/IMP, etc), the hyperlink is removed. However, the iPhone likes to take web addresses in plain text and automatically turn them into hyperlinks. Is there any possible way to stop this action from happening via a HTML tag or by using PHP to replace certain parts of the hyperlink?

'&' : '?') + 'taxInclude=' + display; } </script> When passed to validation It returns that the ampersand there isn't valid, but it's absolutely vital to the function of the page, is there a way I can make the validator ignore this? I don't need to validate the page, I'm no JS expert at all I'm not sure if I can replace it with &amp;. Thanks.

  I am working on playing with some Python to create a webapp. At first I put the HTML in a string, using %s to fill certain elements. That all worked perfectly. Now I want to put the HTML in a template, so I followed this tutorial. I did add the latest jinja2 library to my app.yaml, and naturally my rot13.html does exist with the {{ text }} added. So could anyone please help me in the right direction? I don't know why it's going wrong.

  I'm making a little project with Seam, Hibernate and JSF. This project run on JBoss 5.1. My boss wants to deploy this project on WebLogic. I read on the seam documentation that seam and WebLogic don't work fine together. I would like to know if I can use Hibernate (with JPA) and JSF on WebLogic and what framework (struts, spring?) I can use to replace Seam. Edit: I read in the seam documentation (chapter 39, weblogic integration) and I find that: For several releases of Weblogic there has been an issue with how Weblogic generates stubs and compiles EJB's that use variable arguments in their methods. This is confirmed in the Weblogic 9.X and 10.0.MP1 versions. Unfortunately the 10.3 version only partially addresses the issue as detailed below. So, I want to know if other problems like this exist. • Questions about "casting operation" in OOP

  When programming, we usually use some type-casting operations. When the casting happens on the objects "on the same level", it feels ok. But when it happens on the ojects "on the different levels"(mainly between father and son), it feels weird. Considering this: Class Son extends Father WhenSon s = (Son)father;, it's absolutely unreasonable. Because a "Son" is not a "Father" anymore, "Son" may grow up with some new properties "Father" doesn't have, the casting operation makes these properties unknown. On the other hand, Father f = (Father)son seems reasonable, but according to LSP "An instance of a derived should be able to replace any instance of its superclass" A "Son" can do anything his "Father" can, so the casting operation seems useless. So can i say that these casting operations are agaisnt OO design principle but necessary?

  I have an ajax-enabled site that presents a lot of dynamic content by interpolating JSON values with HTML. This all works fine. BUT it means I have significant amounts of HTML all through my JavaScript.   The Problem I want to press a key when I have a line highlighted and convert from a single line: JGLogEntry *logEntry = [JGLogEntry applicationNoWindowsFrom:date1 to:date2 intoMOC:mockRawMOC]; to a multiline statement: JGLogEntry *logEntry = [JGLogEntry applicationNoWindowsFrom:date1 to:date2 intoMOC:mockRawMOC]; What I've Tried I've got a simple ruby script that almost gets me there. #!/usr/bin/env ruby s = STDIN.read s.gsub!(/(:.+?\w) (\w.+?)/,'\1' + "\n\t" +'\2') print s When I set the output to "Replace Selection", I get this: JGLogEntry *logEntry = [JGLogEntry applicationNoWindowsFrom:date1 to:date2 intoMOC:mockRawMOC]; When I set the output to "Place on Clipboard", then paste it in, I get the desired result: JGLogEntry *logEntry = [JGLogEntry applicationNoWindowsFrom:date1 to:date2 intoMOC:mockRawMOC]; However, this is two keypresses which is clumsy. Any ideas how I can get the replaced text to obey Xcode's auto indent rules?

• Objective-C and Cocoa : crash when calling a class function without entering the function

  Hello, I have a class function (declared and implemented) in a class MyUtils : + (NSString*) theFunction:(NSString*)param1 param2:(NSString*)param2 param3:(NSString*)param3; When I call this function, with : NSString *item = [MyUtils theFunction:@"abc" param2:aPreviousNSString param3:@"xyz"; my app crashes. In the debugger I have a breakpoint on the first action of the "theFunction" function. And this breakpoint is never reached. If I replace the call by NSString *item = @"youyou"; then everything is ok. Forcing a retain on aPreviousNSString before the call does not change anything. Do you have an idea of what is happening ? • iPhone - Change app icon pointed to by info.plist within the application?

  Is there any way to change the 47x47 PNG, pointed to within info.plist, for the iPhone springboard icon from within code? I understand I can add a translation and change the springboard icon per language that the iPhone supports via a changed info.plist per language, but I would like to change the springboard icon for my iPhone app based on a user preference within the app. Any ideas? I haven't tried this, but can a file be copied over another within an app bundle? Could I ship with info.plist pointing to "base.png" then replace "base.png" with another PNG I package with my app from within code? Thanks. --Batgar

• Making Django ignore string literals

  UPDATE: It turns out this is a deeper question than I thought at first glance - the issue is that python is replacing the string literals before they ever get to django. I will do more investigating and update this if I find a solution. I'm using django to work with LaTeX templates for report generation, and am running into a lot of problems with the way Django replaces parts of strings. Specficially, I've run into two problems where I try to insert a variable containing latex code. The first was that it would replace HTML characters, such as the less than symbol, with their HTML codes, which are of course gibberish to a LaTeX interpreter. I fixed this by setting the context to never autoescape, like so: c = Context(inputs) c.autoescape = False However, I still have my second issue, which is that Django replaces string literals with their corresponding characers, so a double backslash becomes \, and \b becomes a backspace. How can I force Django to leave these characters in place, so inputs['variable'] = '{\bf this is code} \\' won't get mangled when I use {{variable}} to reference it in the django template?

• Swap image with jquery and show zoom image

  Hi there, On my site I have 4 thumbnail product images that when clicked on swap the main image. This part is working okay. However, on the main image I'm also trying to use the jQZoom script. The zoom script works for the most part, except that the zoomed image always displays the zoom of the first image, rather than the one selected.   I have several 'select' elements on the page. When I choose some of options, the ajax request is being sent to server and the element adjacent to this 'select' must be updated with response value. • T-SQL Operations on a Calculated Date Field

  Can I do WHERE operations on a calculated date field? I have a lookup field, which has been written badly in SQL and unfortunately I can't change it. But basically it stores dates as characters such as "July-2010" or "June-2009" (along with other non date data). I want to extract the dates first (which I did using a LIKE opertor) and then extract data based on a date range. SELECT BusinessUnit, Lookup, ReleaseDate FROM ( SELECT TOP 10 LookupColumn As Lookup, BU as BusinessUnit, CONVERT(DATETIME, REPLACE(LookupColumn,'-',' ')) as ReleaseDate FROM [dbo].[LookupTable] WHERE LookupColumn LIKE N'%-2010' ) MyTable ORDER BY ReleaseDate WHERE ReleaseDate = '2010-02-01' I'm having issues with WHERE operator. I would assume creating a subquery to encapsulate the calculated field would allow me to do operations with it such as WHERE but maybe I'm wrong. Bottom line is it possible to do operations on calculated fields?

Also, there are some files which are compiled together: g++ file_main.cxx file.cxx -o file_main.out To compile such files, until now I have been adding explicit rules in the Makefile: file_main.out: file_main.cxx file.cxx file.out: file_main.out @echo "Skipping $@" But now my Makefile has a lot of explicit rules, and I would like to replace them with a simpler implicit rule. Any idea how to do it?

  In one of the page I have is where administrators are allowed, however, I use if the session isn't set, the header will redirect them to index.php and that method works. • When is porting data from MySQL to CouchDB NOT advisable? Seeking cautionary tales

  I've dabbled in CouchDB and I have pretty good MySQL experience. I've also created one production application that uses both. I like MySQL but I've run into scaling/concurrency issues with MySQL that CouchDB advertises itself as a general solution for. The problem is that I have MySQL based applications that are pretty huge, and I don't really know whether it would be a good idea or not to try to port them over to a CouchDB datastore. I don't want to put in a lot of time and effort only to find out that my application is really not a good fit for CouchDB. Is there any sort of informed consensus on when porting a MySQL based app to CouchDB is NOT advisable? Any cautionary tales? I think CouchDB is really cool and want to use it more. I'd also like to know ahead of time what specific types of data querying scenarios CouchDB is really not good for, or if CouchDB can really replace MySQL for all the applications I create going forward.
