  • Man broke, possibly on installing git, how do I fix?

    I am running Mac snow leopard 10.6.3 and I used a mac installer program for git that was designed originally for leopard. I think since then my man pages have been broken and attempting to look up any command makes my computer stall for a bit before returning 'no manpage found.' Where do I begin fixing this? Thanks.

    I have just enabled bitlocker using a flash drive without TPM on windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Just to be prepared - is there any way I can recover data from an encrypted volume in Windows 7 ultimate. I found links for BitLocker Repair Tool to help recover data from an encrypted volume for windows vista and windows 2008 here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928201 but did not find anything on microsoft for windows 7. But did not find any for windows 7 Ultimate.

  • Address book software that knows people share addresses

    I'm a bit frustrated with Outlook and Google contacts, as neither understand that people share addresses, or that one address can represent several people. So you either have crappy custom fields like "Bill's mobile", "Jane's mobile", or you have a Bill and a Jane contact, and you have to keep the address updated between the two. Are the any decent, and simple, address book applications out there which have this kind of intelligence? Note: this is for home use, I don't need to do professional 'contact management'.

  • Adding synchronized lyrics to songs

    I want to start something like a personal TuneWiki on my computer. I'm using Windows and have a lot of MP3s. Now I want to add lyrics to them for personal use. I tried Windows Media Player but it is bit a hard to synchronize all of the text with the song time. Are there other tools or players for adding lyrics so that when I start to play a song the streaming text will be synchronized with the beat?

I have some of my services with runlevels 345 on but when I start a stopped instance the services don't start. What's actually happening when I issue a stop command to the instance, and how do I get my services to start automatically when I start the instance up again?

  • Powershell Exchange script returning inconsistent results - PS weirdness

    Maybe someone can shed some light on a bit of Powershell weirdness I've come across and can't explain. Some rows contain numbers! If I put the '|sort name| ' after the initial 'get-mailboxdatabase' it works fine. Whats even weirder is if I do the following: Execute the above command Add the sort before format-table Execute the new command Execute the initial command again What I see is different amounts in each of the three cases - all of which are incorrect. Yet 1 and 3 are the same command and the only difference with 2 is a sort. 1 and 3 should, at a minimum, return the same results. I get blanks where I should have MBs If I add the sort after the get-mailboxdatabase, it always returns identical results (as it should). Can anyone suggest an explanation as to what may be going on?   • How could I let Skydrive desktop sync to MicroSD in Windows 8 tablet?

    I have a Samsung Slate 7 tablet with (now) Windows 8 on it. This machine has a 64 Gb SSD and I have a 64 Gb MicroSD card in it. I also have a Skydrive on my main Microsoft ID that contains about 45 Gb of content. With Windows and some development stuff installed, my Skydrive will not fit on the main drive of the tablet. (Besides, my idea was to keep data on the memory card anyway, to make it easier to repave the machine without data loss if need be.) My problem should now be clear: I want to install the Skydrive desktop app to sync my Skydrive to the MicroSD card. This is not possible, as Skydrive does not allow syncing files to removable drives. I have tried a number of things already, but none of them worked: Use the mklink command line tool to create a directory link/junction from a folder name on SSD to a folder on the MicroSD and then try to install Skydrive sync to the SSD link folder. Skydrive however still recognizes this as something it does not want to sync onto. The various different filter drivers mentioned on Agnipulse (including the Hitachi one) that should make windows see some or all of the removable drives in the system as fixed drives do not seem work on (64-bit) Windows 8: they either can't be installed, do nothing and/or cause Windows 8 to go into Automatic Repair mode when rebooting. The Lexar BootIt app seems to be meant to flip the relevant bit in the on-board drive controller of supported USB pen drives, but I tried it anyway. Of course it did nothing to how the MicroSD card was seen. I have now run out of ideas, it seems, and I was wondering if anyone here has a solution to let Windows 8 see the MicroSD memory card in my tablet as a fixed drive instead of removable drive, or some other way of getting the Skydrive desktop to sync my Skydrive data to that MicroSD card. And to be complete: this is not a duplicate question of this or this as those ask about getting USB drives multiple partitions to work on Windows XP. This question is specific about getting desktop Skydrive to sync to MicroSD card in Windows 8, which seems to be a question I have not seen on superuser so far.

  • nginx 502 bad gateway - fastcgi not listening? (Debian 5)

    I have experience with nginx but it's always been pre-installed for me (via VPS.net pre-configured image). I really like what it does for me, and now I'm trying to install it on my own server with apt-get. This is a fairly fresh Debian 5 install. I have few extra packages installed but they're all .deb's, no manual compiling or anything crazy going on. Apache is already installed but I disabled it. I did apt-get install nginx and that worked fine. Changed the config around a bit for my needs, although the same problem I'm about to describe happens even with the default config. It took me a while to figure out that the default debian package for nginx doesn't spawn fastcgi processes automatically. But when I try to view a web page via nginx, I just get a 502 bad gateway error. After futzing around a bit, I tried telneting to 127.0.0.1 9000 (fastcgi is listening on port 9000, and nginx is configured to talk to that port), but it just immediately closes the connection. This makes me think the problem is with fastcgi, but I'm not sure what I can do to test it. It may just be closing the connection because it's not getting fed any data to process, but it closes immediately so that makes me think otherwise. So... any advice? I can't figure it out. It doesn't help that it's 1AM, but I'm going crazy here!

  • Slow Query log for just one database

    can I enable the slow query log specifically for just one database? What I've done currently is to take the entire log into excel and then run a pivot report to work out which database is the slowest. So i've gone and done some changes to that application in the hope of reducing the slow query occurence. rather than running my pivot report again which took a bit of time to cleanse the data i'd rather just output slow queries from the one database possible?

  • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows.   • Instructions per cycle?

    I've been learning a little bit more about how processors work, but I haven't been able to find a straight answer about instructions per cycle. For instance, I was under the impression that a four core CPU could execute four instructions per cycle, so a four core CPU running at 2Ghz would execute 8 billion operations per second. Is this the case? I'm sure it's oversimplifying things, but if there's a guide or something else I can use to set myself straight, I'm definitely open to ideas.

  • Acer Aspire Timeline - Power control application?

    I recently purchased an Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ notebook. It comes equipped with 2 modes, one for power saving (screen is dimmer, etc) and another for when connected to a power source. However, I'd like to control the settings for power save mode (specifically to make the screen a bit brighter) but the system didn't seem to ship with an app installed to modify these settings. Browsing the support site proved unsuccessful also. Anything out there I can do to control the notebook's power save settings?

  • GIMP: Slightly wrong color when saving images

    When I create a new image, fill it with a single color, and save it as *.png or *.jpeg, it gets a slightly wrong color. When I save it as *.gif, the color is correct. Does this have something to do with a color profile? How can I turn it off? (Gimp 2.6.7 on Mac) BTW, when I use "Digital Color Meter" to check the color in the GIMP window, I also get a wrong value - but that value is again a little bit different.
