• Add New Features to WMP with Windows Media Player Plus

  Do you use Windows Media Player 11 or 12 as your default media player? Today, we’re going to show you how to add some handy new features and enhancements with the Windows Media Player Plus third party plug-in. Installation and Setup Download and install Media Player Plus! (link below). You’ll need to close out of Windows Media Player before you begin or you’ll receive the message below. The next time you open Media Player you’ll be presented with the Media Player Plus settings window. Some of the settings will be enabled by default, such as the Find as you type feature. Using Media Player Plus! Find as you type allows you to start typing a search term from anywhere in Media Player without having to be in the Search box. The search term will automatically fill in the search box and display the results.   You’ll also see Disable group headers in the Library Pane.   This setting will display library items in a continuous list similar to the functionality of Windows Media Player 10. Under User Interface you can enable displaying the currently playing artist and title in the title bar. This is enabled by default.   The Context Menu page allows you to enable context menu enhancements. The File menu enhancement allows you to add the Windows Context menu to Media Player on the library pane, list pane, or both. Right click on a Title, select File, and you’ll see the Windows Context Menu. Right-click on a title and select Tag Editor Plus. Tag Editor Plus allows you to quickly edit media tags.   The Advanced tab displays a number of tags that Media Player usually doesn’t show. Only the tags with the notepad and pencil icon are editable.   The Restore Plug-ins page allows you to configure which plug-ins should be automatically restored after a Media Player crash. The Restore Media at Startup page allows you to configure Media Player to resume playing the last playlist, track, and even whether it was playing or paused at the time the application was closed. So, if you close out in the middle of a song, it will begin playing from that point the next time you open Media Player. You can also set Media Player to rewind a certain number of seconds from where you left off. This is especially useful if you are in the middle of watching a movie. There’s also the option to have your currently playing song sent to Windows Live Messenger. You can access the settings at any time by going to Tools, Plug-in properties, and selecting Windows Media Player Plus. Windows Media Plus is a nice little free plug-in for WMP 11 and 12 that brings a lot of additional functionality to Windows Media Player. If you use Media Player 11 or WMP 12 in Windows 7 as your main player, you might want to give this a try. Download Windows Media Player Plus! • Apply Skins to Add Some Flair to Windows Media Player 12

  Tired of the same look and feel of Windows Media Player in Windows 7? We’ll show you how to inject new life into your media experience by applying skins in WMP 12. Adding Skins In Library view, click on View from the Menu and select Skin Chooser. By default, WMP 12 comes with only a couple of modest skins. When you select a skin from the left pane, a preview will be displayed to the right. To apply one of the skins, simply select it from the pane on the left and click Apply Skin.   You can also switch to the currently selected skin in the Skin chooser by selecting Skin from the View menu, or by pressing Crtl + 2. Media Player will open in Now Playing mode. Click on the Switch to Library button at the top left to return to Library view.     Ok, so the included skins are a little boring. You can find additional skins by selecting Tools > Download > Skins.   Or, by clicking on More Skins from within the Skin chooser.   You will be taken the the Microsoft website where you can choose from dozens of skins to download and install. Select a skin you’d like to try and click the link to download.   If prompted with a warning message about files containing scripts that access your library, click Yes. Note: These warning boxes may look a bit different depending on your browser. We are using Chrome for this example.   Click on View Now.   Your new skin will be on display. To get back to the Library mode, find and click the Return to Full Mode button.    Some skins may launch video in a separate window.   If you want to delete one of the skins, select it from the list within the Skin chooser and click the red “X.” You can also press the delete key on your keyboard.   Then click Yes to confirm.   Conclusion Using skins is a quick and easy way to add some style to Windows Media Player and switching back and forth between skins is a breeze. Regardless of your interests, you are sure to find a skin that fits your tastes. You may find WMP skins on other sites, but sticking with Microsoft’s website will ensure maximum compatibility. • Android RatingBar weirdness: Whenever I add a RatingBar to my layout, a bunch of the generated tags,

  Whenever I use a RatingBar view in my layout, I suddenly get all kinds of compile errors. I'm using Android 2.0, but I've also tried 2.0.1, and 2.1, without joy. I also get a message: Shader 'android.graphics.BitmapShader' is not supported in Layout Editor, and an odd warning which may or maynot be related: warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. I've tried using the RatingBar both within a tablelayout and outside it, but it behaves the same way. This is very puzzling and frustrating. Please help if you can. • Create Custom Playlists in Windows Media Player 12

  A playlist is a group of songs or media files that are grouped together based on a theme. Today we’ll look at how to create your own custom playlists in Windows Media Player 12. Create Custom Playlists Open Windows Media Player and switch to the Library view. Click on the Play tab at the top right to reveal the List pane.   If you currently have songs listed on the List pane, you can remove them by clicking Clear list.   To add songs to your playlist, right-click on the song title, select Add to, and then click Play list. You can also drag and drop the song title right onto the play list area. Hold down the Control [Ctrl] key while clicking to select more than one track at a time.   Changing the Playlist Order You can click and drag each item in your playlist to move it up or down.   You can also right click on the title and select Move up or Move down, or to completely remove a track from your playlist. You have the option to shuffle your list by clicking the Options list icon and selecting Shuffle list from the dropdown list. By selecting Sort list by you can sort by Title, Artist, Album, Release date, and more. Saving and naming your playlist To save your playlist, click on the Save list button. You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your playlist in the text box. Click away when you are finished. Windows Media Player will display your most recent playlists in the Navigation panel. Simply select the playlist anytime you want to listen to it.   Conclusion Custom playlists are a great way to group your music by themes such as mood, genre, activity, season, and more. • Android orientation change causes ImageView to dissapear

  Below is my layout for the row template in a SimpleCursorAdapter. The ImageView with id next_arrow disappears on orientation change. If I replace @drawable/arrow with @drawable/icon (copy of the standard sym_def_app_icon) it works fine. • Android - creating a custom preferences activity screen

  Android applications can maintain their own internal preferences (and allow them to be modified by users) with very little coding. In fact, you don't even need to write an code to explicitly save these preferences, it's all handled automatically! Create a new Android project, with an intial activity title Main. Create two more activities: ShowPrefs, which extends Activity Set Prefs, which extends PreferenceActivity Add these two to your AndroidManifest.xml file: <activity android:name=".SetPrefs"></activity> <activity android:name=".ShowPrefs"></activity> Now we'll work on fleshing out each activity. • I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application.   I find the UI and general usability of the prepackaged windows Media Player to be cludgy and at times incomprehensible. I used to use programs like WinAmp and Sonique, many years ago. What are some current alternatives to the windows Media Player? I don't have iTunes - I'm pretty happy with ripping my own audio files from my album collection. I'm specifically looking for the follow qualities/abilities: Easy sorting and manipulation of the media library Easy tagging of media - marking favorites and ratings, etc. Preferably lightweight. Something like a Picasa for audio media.

• View overlapping with RelativeLayout on Android 1.5

  I am having a problem with views overlapping in a RelativeLayout on Android 1.5... Everything is working fine on Android 1.6 and above. I do understand that Android 1.5 has some issues with RelativeLayout, but I was not able to find anything on StackOverflow or the android beginners group for my specific problem. My layout consists of four sections, each of which are made up of a TextView, a Gallery, and another TextView aligned vertically: Running Apps Recent Apps Services Processes When all four sets of these items are displayed everything works fine. However, my app allows the user to specify that some of these are not displayed. If the user turns off Running Apps, Recent Apps, or Services then the remaining sections all of a sudden overlap eachother. Here is my code for the layout. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. What can I do to make this work in Android 1.5? I don't think it is just a matter of reordering the views in the xml because it works fine when everything is displayed.

  Hello! I just can't display the button at the bottom of the screen. I have 2 textviews and 2 edittexts set as gone, and they become visible when user clicks checkbox. • android app working on simulator but not on phone

  i have this app that i developed and it works great on the simulator with no errors what so ever. but the moment i try to run the same on the phone for testing, the app crashes stating filenotfoundexception. it says the file /res/drawable/divider_horizontal.9.png is missing. but actually speaking, i have never referenced that file through my code. i believe its a system/os file that is unavailable. i have a custom list view, i guess its the divider there... could somebody please suggest what is wrong here. i believe this is a similar issue discussed here..but i am unable to make   I've implemented horizontal page view with many images. Understand the beauty of creating layout in XML file, but lost how to access various elements, especially a View element to draw on it. Catching button events and responding to, for example changing title bar text and changing View background color works fine, but how the heck do I access and more importantly draw on the view defined in main.xml UPDATE: That for your suggestion, however besides that I need a View, not ImageView and you are missing a parameter on canvas.drawText and an ending bracket, it does not work. Now this is most likely because you missed the fact that I am a newbie and assuming I can fill in any blanks. I hope somebody can break this down for me and provide a solution, and perhaps explain why I can't just create a View element in my main.xml layotu file and draw on it in code.

• Why is android:FLAG_BLUR_BEHIND creating a gradient background in my new activity instead of bluring

  Hi, I've got two activities. One is supposed to be a blur in front of the other. The background activity has several ImageViews which are set up as thin gradients extending across most of the screen and 10dip high. When I start the second activity it sets the background as a gradient occupying the entire window space, that is it appears to be fill_parent'd for both height and width. If I comment out the ImageViews then it blurs and looks as expected. Any thoughts? • Android accessibility focus - clicking a view changes focus to previous view

  I'm using android TalkBack to test my application for accessibility use. When I swipe to select a view and double tap, the focus returns the the view above it. Usually when swiping to a view and double clicking it, onClick is called.
