• xcopy and timeouts

  Related to this question and this answer http://serverfault.com/questions/48839/backup-on-disc-using-truecrypt-corruption-problem/50829#50829 I want to copy the backup to my HD. However the timeout seems to be a problem. I see many single files then i see File creation error - Data error (cyclic redundancy check). and its currently trying to copy the next file. When i click my computer i see nothing and it also locks up for some seconds (30 maybe) So TrueCrypt is not a good solution if i must be able to copy files back from a volume with a corrupted sector? (answer in other thread please). Is there any way for me to change the timeout? • Does a site's bounce rate influence Google rankings?

  Does Google consider bounce rate or something similar in ranking sites? Background: here at Stack Exchange we noticed that the latest Google algorithm changes resulted in about a 20% dip in traffic to Server Fault (and a much smaller dip in traffic to Super User). Stack Overflow traffic was not affected. There was an article on WebProNews which hypothesized that bounce rate might be a ranking signal in Google's latest Panda update. According to Google Analytics, these are our bounce rates over the last month: Site Bounce Rate Avg Time on Site ------------- ----------- ---------------- SuperUser 84.67% 01:16 ServerFault 83.76% 00:53 Stack Overflow 63.63% 04:12 Now, technically, Google has no way to know the bounce rate. If you go to Google, search for something, and click on the first result, Google can't tell the difference between: a user who turns off their computer a user who goes to a completely different web site a user who spends hours clicking around on the website they landed on What Google does know is how long it takes the user to come back to Google and do another search. According to the book In The Plex (page 47), Google distinguishes between what they call "short clicks" and "long clicks": A short click is a search where the user quickly comes back to Google and does another search. Google interprets this as a signal that the first search results were unsatisfactory. A long click is a search where the user doesn't search again for a long time. The book says that Google uses this information internally, to judge the quality of their own algorithms. It also said that short click data in which someone retypes a slight variation of the search is used to fuel the "Did you mean...?" spell checking algorithm. So, my hypothesis is that Google has recently decided to use long click rates as a signal of a high quality site. Does anyone have any evidence of this? Have you seen any high-bounce-rate sites which lost traffic (or vice-versa)?

• Mounting a Mail Store that is in a Recovery Storage group On Exchange 2003

  If I have a production server with the Mail Store Foo in both the storage group companyName and the Recovery Storage Group, is it okay to Mount Foo in the RSG while it is mounted in companyName so I can extract some mailboxs from the recovery storage group? Basically I am wonder if it is okay to mount it in both Production and the Recovery Storage Groups while the mail server is in production and the particular mail store is in production. • Can you authenticate into SSAS with AD LDS (ADAM) accounts?

  I'm very new to AD LDS and experienced but not qualified with SSAS, so my apologies for my ignorances with these. We have a couple implementations where we expose SSAS via an HTTPS proxy (msmdpump.dll) and currently we have a temporary domain setup handling this (where our end-users have a second account+creds to manage because of this = non-ideal). I want to move us towards a more permanent solution which I'm thinking of moving all authentication to AD LDS for our web apps, SSAS, and others. However, SSAS is where I'm concerned about this. I know SSAS requires Windows Authentication and to play nicely, and that this ultimately means Active Directory will be involved. Is there a way to get this done with AD LDS instead of having to use a full AD DS implementation? If so, how? (Note: My question over at StackOverflow had a suggestion that I post this question here on ServerFault instead. My apologies if I'm not asking in the right forum.)

I've been directed to take a look at Solarwinds, which is an excellent network monitoring solution, for an internal project. Basically we want to write our own panel to display information custom to our network infrastructure. Has anyone done anything like this, or know if there is a plugin SDK giving developer access? • Trouble configuring firewall for FTP on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Ok, I'm having the exact same problem as in this question http://serverfault.com/questions/59635/outbound-ftp-on-server-2008-r2-stalls but the accepted answer didn't help me much... I followed the third step of this http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/309/configuring-ftp-firewall-settings/ guide in order to configure my firewall for FTP, and I am able to authenticate, however, the data channel doesn't seem to be passing through the firewall. If I disable the firewall, everything works fine. Hope someone can help me, as this is really starting to annoy me. Best regards, x3ro

• Sendmail Issue - Local Mail / Inner Domain Mail

  Environments: Ubuntu / Sendmail / Google Apps Emailing: I send and receive all of my emails through google apps besides emails that are sent directly from my website. My Web Domain: example.com (for the purpose of the question only) Problem: When my website sends an email, using sendmail, to any local address ([email protected]) I get an unknown user error. Emails sent to other domains seem to work just fine. Question: I believe this is because I don't have these users defined on my ubuntu server, this is besides the point I need to configure sendmail such that it doesn't pick out local emails sent to ([email protected]) and instead finds their name server which points to google apps and sends it there instead. This is my first try at serverfault, I normally use stackoverflow so let me know if I'm messing up! Thank you!

• Redirect folder to different server

  Just for clarity, I already posted this on StackOverflow and got advice that this better fits in ServerFault.com so here goes: I know you can redirect subdomains to a different server, but can you do the same with folders? Say I have example.com. I can redirect mysubdomain.example.com to a different server, but can I redirect example.com/mysubdomain to a different server? I'd like to host a rails app in that folder on a site that runs php while still maintaining good search engines ratings (by not creating a sub domain which in my experience in recognized as a different site). Any help? Thanks!

• Can't find instructions how to use Windows 7 drivers on Windows Server 2008 R2

  Maybe I should post this to http://www.serverfault.com. Windows 7 comes with all sorts of signed drivers so there's high probability that all drivers for your machine will be installed during system setup. On the other hand Windows Server 2008 doesn't event though it's practically the same OS when it comes to drivers. But I know that this has a very good reason. It's a server product, not a desktop one. But the thing is that many power users and developers use server OS on their workstations which are normally desktop machines and would need Windows 7 driver spectrum... Question I know I've been reading about some trick on the internet that first installed Windows 7 on the machine, than do something to get either all Windows 7 driver collection or just those installed, and then install Windows Server 2008 and use those drivers. The thing is: I can't seem to find these instructions on the internet any more. If anybody knows where these are please provide the link for the rest of us.

• Thinking Sphinx index rebuild error on windows xp: searchd is already running

  I have Sphinx installed on windows xp system. A I use Thinking Sphinx plug-in within my rails application. I can't rebuild index with Thinking Sphinx rake task after application server starting up even if I stop it: Stopped search daemon (pid 4492). ... bla bla bla ... total 3 reads, 0.000 sec, 1.3 kb/call avg, 0.0 msec/call avg total 9 writes, 0.000 sec, 1.2 kb/call avg, 0.0 msec/call avg WARNING: could not open pipe (GetLastError()=2) rake aborted! searchd is already running. If I reload system, I can rebuild index. What do you think about? p.s: Does this question suited for serverfault.com?

• (Apache) RedirectMatch regex to match all directories except those in my list

  I need to 301 redirect all requests coming in for requests to http//server.com to be redirected to http//newserver.com unless the request is for an arbitary list of directories we are maintaining on the legacy server (eg server.com/foo or server.com/bar) I'm having a hard time working out how best to set this up and the regexs. EG, I need: http//server.com/page1 redirect to http//newserver.com/page1 http//server.com/dir1/page2 redirect to http//newserver.com/dir1/page2 http//server.com/foo to load as normal http//server.com/bar/baz.html to load as normal ... because 'foo' and 'bar' are in my list of legacy dirs. I'm wondering if the way to do this is to some how catch the matches in my list and then redirect anything else as a wildcard over to the new server -- but I can't make it work. Can anyone help me with some regex and rewrites for those please? • How do I create /Groups/ folder in Mac OS X

  I am familiar with adding Groups with the GUI in MAC OS X, but I am trying to do it via SSH to a computer I remotely manage as a production server. I want to create / modify some of my users for a particular directory by creating a new group. In Another helpful serverfault post, I see that I need to add the users to the group name at /Groups/foo, however my system's Groups folder does not exist... Does Mac OS X create the Groups directory only when you actually create the group – if there do not already exist any groups on the Machine? Is this something that I can do simply using: mkdir "Groups" Or maybe I'm wrong altogether. Any pointers for how to go about this with Unix? – I should note also that this group will be used to manage the access to a directory on my server via an .htaccess file. Thanks!

• Add physical disk to KVM virtual machine

  I'm setting up a file server (nas4free) as a KVM virtual machine on a Ubuntu Server 12.04 system. How do I add physical hard drives directly to the VM so they can be used by the guest (nas4free), but not the host? Specifically the hard drive I'd like to mount is /dev/sda (which is not currently mounted on the server.) So far I've found two solutions but I haven't gotten either to work. The first is from Server Fault where it's suggested to use virt-manager. I haven't gotent this to work because when I try to select an existing drive nothing is being listed. My best guess as to why this is, is because I'm using virt-manager over ssh and not connecting as root, should that make a difference? The second solution I've found here is to just run the command (modified for my system) qm set nas4free -virtio /dev/sda but that seems to require proxmox which I don't have installed and doesn't seem to be in the default repositories? Finally, once the above is sorted out and I can mount the drive directly to the VM, does anyone have an experience with whether the drive should be mounted to the VM as scsi, ide, or virtio? (I know virtio was recommend in the linked ServerFault page, but I hadn't heard of it before now since I mainly use VMWare). Thanks for your help!!!

• Sql 2008 r2 DEV install failed

  I am trying to install Sql 2008 r2 DEVeloper on Windows 2008 STD. It previously had Sql 2008 Enterprise installed. I first uninstalled SQL 2008. I think uninstall still leaves some crap in registery, and in Program files. Installation fails in the last step of the process - installation, about couple of minutes into it. Can't insert picture for you because serverfault does not allow me to do so. But it basically it: Error message: "Installation failed" I re-installed SQL 2008 Enterprise on this box and we are not going to go to R2 on older servers that previously had SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 on it. Looking at Windows log: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\x64\Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SqlServer_ConfigExtension.dll". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4027" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

• Windows 2008 and Truecrypt: can't access shared folder called "media"

  On my Windows 2008 system, I've attached an external USB drive that's encrypted using Truecrypt. Once I mounted the Truecrypt drive, I share some of the directories from that drive using Windows file sharing. I tried sharing a folder called "media" and when I try to access that folder from a Vista client on my LAN via \myserver\media, I get this error: \myserver\media is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. An unexpected network error occurred. If I share the folder media under some name such as fizzbuzz then I can access \myserver\fizzbuzz w/o any errors. Any clues as to why this is happening? • Allowing users to install fonts in Windows 7 (through GPO)

  Hi, This is somewhat related to my previous question, http://serverfault.com/questions/48155/why-do-installed-fonts-disappear-after-reboot. Having got the font install issue sorted out under XP just fine, recently we've got a Windows 7 workstation and I've created a special GPO for it. Initially it was UAC that was demanding administrative access to C:\windows\fonts despite the fact the policy dictates that directory is writable (as is the relevant registry entries, on XP anyway). The issue now though is that when I try to copy a font or hit install it claims that the font "does not appear to be a valid font". This happens with every type of font as well. Is there some new and special consideration when allowing these changes on Windows 7? Any input would be appreciated. Many thanks, Doug

• pam_filter usage prevent passwd from working

  Hello everybody, I have PAM+LDAP SSL running on Debian Lenny, it works well. I always want to restrict who's able to connect, in the past I used pam_groupdn for that but I recently got a situation where I has to accept 2 different groups. So I used pam_filter like this : pam_filter |(groupattribute=server)(groupattribute=restricted_server) The problem is that with this statement, passwd doesn't work anymore with LDAP accounts. Any idea why ? • How to setup separate MySQL and PHP VPS servers

  Someone recommended I should have my MySQL server separate from my Apache/PHP server in case of hacking and such. By visiting linode, slicehost and various articles here on serverfault I've managed to cobble together a decent set of instructions on how to do the Apache/PHP bit. I'm using Rackspace VPS and they provide an internal IP for each server. If I setup a MySQL VPS, should I assume that I would just add the internal IP for the database host? And I guess that I would only need to open up my default ssh port and mysql ports and install phpmyadmin on there? Ideally I would have webserver.mydomain.com and dbserver.mydomain.com (two 256mb VPS's) with servermin on webserver.mydomain.com and phpmyadmin on dbserver.mydomain.com. If anyone has any guides or advice on how to setup this type of solution I'd be more then grateful!

• Windows 7 using exactly HALF the installed memory

  I've taken this directly from system information: Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB Total Physical Memory 2.00 GB Available Physical Memory 434 MB Total Virtual Memory 5.10 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.19 GB Page File Space 3.11 GB Also the BIOS reports a full 4GB available. Note the 4gb installed, yet 2gb total. I understand that on a 32 bit operating system, you'll never get the full 4gb of ram, however typically you'll get in the range of 2.5-3.2gb of ram. I have only 2gb available! My swap file goes nuts when I do anything! Note that I have dual SLI nvidia video cards, each with 512mb of on board ram, though I have the SLI feature turned off. Anybody know why Windows might claim that I have exactly 2gb of ram total? • Building php-devel package from source (php 5.3)

  I am building PHP 5.3 rpm packages for our custom CentOS 5 yum repo. I am fairly new to building rpms to be honest, but I have had moderate success downloading the SRPMS for a given package and repackaging them using "rpmbuild --rebuild" command. One thing that is throwing me off though is how to satisfy the php-devel package.. I obviously have the PHP 5.3 source files as I was able to build my php-common and other packages with it. But I am not sure how to actually build the devel package! From what I understand, I already have most of what I need - the latest php 5.3.5 source tarball. However I am not sure how to build the correct .spec file to satisfy what I need. If you are knowledgeable in this area, would you mind helping a fellow sysadmin out? Sharing a spec file or at least giving me some pointers on how to approach it. Thanks much serverfault community! -BajaBob

• Binding MySQL to run from the public or private LAN IP address - which one is faster

  So we have 2 servers all running at the same web host. We have bind MySQL to listen on the public ip-address of the database server and the web server connects to it from the public ip. Both servers run on the same private network. Currently, the DB connect method from our php script takes about 3ms to connect to the MySQL database server host.
