• Large strings: Text files or SQL DB?

  I am coding a forum system using PHP. I am currently storing a threads ID, title, author, views and other attributes in an SQL database and then storing the thread body (the HTML and BBcode) in text files inside a folder named after the thread ID. In practise it's really simple to grab the database values then just grab the thread body from the text file, but I was wondering if this is the 'proper way'? I have personally no problems doing this but if it turns out it is massively inefficient and I should instead store both the thread body HTML and BBcode in the database instead then I will change. However, to me it seems wrong to store such a (very possibly) huge string of multi-line text along with lots of different characters in a database - I was taught that databases are more for short field 'values' rather than website content. I would just like a definitive answer to this because it's been bugging me for ages as to wherever I’ve been doing it properly. Does anyone know how popular forum systems store threads?

  On SQL Server, the sys.objects table includes "Type" and "Type_Desc" attributes. There isn't a constraint on sys.objects that points me to table of these, and sys.types contains data types. I've searched SQL BOL but haven't found it. Any help would be appreciated. EDIT: Some DBs use only a subset of these types. For example, if I have a database with no views, when I query Sys.Objects as above, there are no "V" rows in the results. I am looking for a list of all possible types and descriptions used by SQL Server.

  I would like to ask for you a little help in my homework. I'm learning at an university of Debrecen, and I would like to be a programmer, but I'm stuck with this homework. It's a OpenGL project in C. (freeglut) The next task is about: Window to viewport transformation. Draw graphs of functions, as shown below. The individual views (viewport) defines four different rectangles. Functions look like this picture: one window in 4 piece, and one pice of one function. • What is the most elegant way to access current_user from the models? or why is it a bad idea?

  So, I've implemented some permissions between my users and the objects the users modify.. and I would like to lessen the coupling between the views/controllers with the models (calling said permissions). To do that, I had an idea: Implementing some of the permission functionality in the before_save / before_create / before_destroy callbacks. But since the permissions are tied to users (current_user.can_do_whatever?), I didn't know what to do. This idea may even increase coupling, as current_user is specifically controller-level. The reason why I initially wanted to do this is: All over my controllers, I'm having to check if a user has the ability to save / create / destroy. So, why not just return false upon save / create / destroy like rails' .save already does, and add an error to the model object and return false, just like rails' validations? Idk, is this good or bad? is there a better way to do this?

• How to create a web framework in C# without ASP?

  I've managed to get a C# asp page running under ubuntu/apache/mono, but I don't want to write my framework in these ASP pages, I want to use straight C# and then I'll use a templating language for my views. But I don't know where to begin? C# is a compiled language, so... how would I do this? Would I compile everything and then have apache hook into the (single) executable and pass in the the request URL? Could I request specific .cs pages and then have apache tell it to compile and then "display" it only if it's been updated? Can the "view" files be compiled individually to avoid having to recompile everything every time there's a change? Is there some "base" I can work from, or am I going to have to reinvent accessing GET and POST variables (by reading header info) and all sorts of other stuff we take for granted in languages like PHP?

• didSelectRowAtIndexPath being called after viewDidLoad of the called view

  I am trying to pass variables over to the new view. I have the following code: appDelegate *dataCenter = (AppDelegate*)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; dataCenter.myVariable = [array objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; in the didSelectRowAtIndexPath of the calling view. However, the issue that I have is that this variable is empty in the vewDidLoad function of the next view, simply because it fired off BEFORE the didSelectRowAtIndexPath of the calling view. I am using storyboard to link the views together. Both are UITableView. If I hit back and then reselect the table element it is then set, granted that by the time I hit back and then selected again, the variable got set. Is there any way to for the order of execution? I really don't want to do UI view switching on the back end. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  Hi, Until now I've been used to using DAOs to retrieve information from databases. Other sources of data are possible though and I'm wondering if and how the pattern could be applied in general. For example, I'm now working on an application that fetches XML on the web. The XML file could be considered as a data source and the actual fetching is similar in principle to a database request. I'm not quite sure how the DAO could be structured though. Any views on the subject are welcome.

For instance, in the service layer code sample there is a method public IEnumerable<Contact> ListContacts() { return _repository.ListContacts(); } If instead you wanted a IEnumerable, should it go in the service layer, or is there somewhere else that is the "correct" place? Perhaps more appropriately, if you have a separate viewmodel for each view associated with ContactController, should ContactManagerService have a separate method to return each viewmodel? If the service layer is not the proper place, where should viewmodel objects be initialized for use by the controller?

• Breaking One Big Graphic of MutablePaths into CAShapeLayers

  I have a class called GraphicView that takes a Graphic object and draws it in its drawRect method. This Graphic object is basically an array of mutablePaths that comprise an icon that I want drawn. For performance and other issues, I was thinking of taking this icon that is comprised of mutablePaths, and dividing it into a bunch of CAShapeLayers. I'm wondering is this possible? Considering the points for the mutablePaths of the icon are all interwoven together (ie the icon was initially an SVG file that I converted to code), is it possible to divide different parts of the icon into CAShapeLayers, and reassemble them all together when assigning to the views layer? If so how would it be done? If I assign them as sublayers to a CALayer or CAShapeLayer, will it understand to mesh them all together?

• Joomla! 2.5 use login data from another database

  I have a hard question. I'd like the joomla login does not use its own database for users/password but I want to use my database users with my table fields, my passwords etc.. I don't know from where start, I thought I could edit database request for login to my db or create a little script to automatically add the users on joomla database. I tried to see components/com_users/views/login/tmpl/default_login.php but it seems that there is nothing. Can someone help me figure out what to change? Maybe the simple thing is import my database users into database user joomla, is there any plugin or something else that you know? p.s. I use Clarion theme build on Gantry framework, Joomla! 2.5.6 Stable, PHP 5.2.17

• varnish invalidate url REGEX from backend

  Say I have some highly-visited front-page, which displays number of some items by categories. When some item is added / deleted I need to invalidate this front-page/url and some 2 others. What is the best practice how to invalidate those urls from backend in Varnish (4.x)? From what I captured, I can: implement my HTTP PURGE handler in VCL configuration file, that "bans" urls matching received regex from backend to Varnish, send 3x HTTP PURGE requests for those 3 urls. But is this approach safe for this automatic usage? Basicly I need to invalidate some views everytime some related entity is inserted/updated/deleted. Can it lead to ban list cumulation and increasing CPU consumption? Is there any other approach? Thanks.

What am I missing? The URL on which the DELETE links exist is myapp/(<dataclass_id>[0-9]+)/

• Seam reRender component in partial; reRender across naming containers

  Hello, I'm using seam to develop a simple web app. Using a4j commandButton in many places, with the property reRender="componentName" componentName is in most places a a4j outputPanel Which always worked, until I used a template. with include of two different views. reRender applied to the whole view does work, but reRender applied to an inner component does not. Same issue with page rules, all action I had defined are not functioning any more. • Best practice: How to persist simple data without a database in django?

  I'm building a website that doesn't require a database because a REST API "is the database". (Except you don't want to be putting site-specific things in there, since the API is used by mostly mobile clients) However there's a few things that normally would be put in a database, for example the "jobs" page. You have master list view, and the detail views for each job, and it should be easy to add new job entries. (not necessarily via a CMS, but that would be awesome) e.g. example.com/careers/ and example.com/careers/77/ I could just hardcode this stuff in templates, but that's no DRY- you have to update the master template and the detail template every time. What do you guys think? Maybe a YAML file? Or any better ideas? Thx

• Redrawing content of UIWebView

  I have a bunch of webviews with static html content that I'm putting in a scroll view as pages. That works fine, but having 20 something full screen subviews of the scroll view is causing some lag. I solved that by only placing 5 at a time in there. The current view, and the two next and two previous. The problem now is that any web view that is not a subview of the scroll view is not drawing correctly based on the device orientation. The frame of the webview is printing out correct, but the actual content is drawing in portrait mode. So there is essentially a strip of blank space to the right of the content. How do I go about re rendering the content without reloading the page? • UITableView - centering of Sections

  Hi all, I am using a table view with its style set as "Grouped". I have only 2 sections to be displayed in the table view and the table view does not occupy full iPhone screen (It has some other views with it). So I would like to display those 2 sections centered in the table view rather than displaying the sections from the top of table view. One round about way is to set header and footer of the table view appropriately. But the disadvantage of this is, each sections will be equidistant (looks awkward!). Anybody with solutions to it?   Hi, I making a eclipse view that is working with selected elements from other views. Let say I have opened a java file in the editor that has the following fields in it: private String world = " world!" private String hello = "hello" + world; When I select "hello" in the Outline view I'm able to get IFiled selection and I have access to it's properties, but what i need is the true value of the field ("hello world!"). • Possible to exclude or reorder a column from `*` ?

  Is it possible to exclude a column from a select * from table statement with SQL Server? I have a need for this and this is my only option other than parsing a raw SQL string to get out the required field names (I really don't want to do that). Just to be bold. When the query is made I do not have access to the list of fields needed from the table but I do know which field I do not need. This is part of a complex multi-part query. Surely there must be some way even if it's "hackish" such as using table variables or views My other option is to reorder the columns. My problem is with ExecuteScalar SQL functions which get the first row and first column.

  Hello, I have created Views for Multiview dynamically . In the view control I have a Gridview control which has a checkbox control. I have a button in the main aspx page on click of which it will check(if checked or not) for all the checkbox and fetch the corresponding row from the gridview. The view is for tabbed menu. In each tab the the gridview populates the data in the runtime. Have defined the dynamic control in Page_PreInit. I'm not able to access the checkbox . How would I achieve this . Thanks

• How can I traverse a reverse generic relation in a Django template?

  I have the following class that I am using to bookmark items: class BookmarkedItem(models.Model): is_bookmarked = models.BooleanField(default=False) user = models.ForeignKey(User) content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey() And I am defining a reverse generic relationship as follows: class Link(models.Model): url = models.URLField() bookmarks = generic.GenericRelation(BookmarkedItem) In one of my views I generate a queryset of all links and add this to a context: links = Link.objects.all() context = { 'links': links } return render_to_response('links.html', context) The problem I am having is how to traverse the generic relationship in my template. For each link I want to be able to check the is_bookmarked attribute and change the add/remove bookmark button according to whether the user already has it bookmarked or not. Is this possible to do in the template? Or do I have to do some additional filtering in the view and pass another queryset?
