  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? I am looking for a new VPS for http://hotelpublisher.com. At the moment it is either linode.com, slicehost.com or vps.net (alternatives are welcome). Since I already use Google cloud to deliver data, my priority is ram/cpu/reliability/price. The issue reported both times was Unacceptable site content. I read the content policy by google and found nothing that would indicate that the content i have on my blog is unacceptable to them.   I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

• Dynamically rewrite URLs upon the user's selection - is it possible?

  In my PHP based web application, there's a form that generates a URL according to the user's selection. The form has 7 different fields, each one of them affects the final URL, none of them is mandatory. The final URL can be: /field1/user_setting_of_field1/field3/user_setting_of_field3/field6/user_setting_of_field6/ or just: /field4/user_setting_of_field4 these URLs should be rewritten to- /results.php?field1=user_setting_of_field1&field3=user_setting_of_field3&field6=user_setting_of_field6 and: /results.php?field4=user_setting_of_field4 Is it possible to create a single rewrite rule that will cover these variations? I'd hate to create different rewrite rule for every possible scenario, it'll take forever... I'm currently developing the app on a Windows machine with IIS 7.5, but will eventually deploy it to an Apache server. Is it possible in both? I currently need to solve it for the IIS environment, and later on for Apache.

• Is ignoring clients data during an automatic upgrading acceptable?

  I recently faced a deletion of my calendar and notes data inside a third party application ( Horde ) on my online space. When I told the web hosting provider they replied that they were doing an upgrade to system software (!!) and client third party applications are not within their reach or backup policy. They don't even have a backup of my data. Is this practice acceptable from a web hosting provider, even for an individual clients ? I know that backing up my data is my responsibility but I anticipated that backup copies done by the host would be available when needed.

• Google Analytics: tracking subdomains for a profile defined for a subdomain

  Hope you can help. We have set up a single property under our Google Analytics account. That property's default URL is set to subdomain1.example.com. We would now like to track multiple subdomains for example.com, under the same property. Seems easy enough: we just need to add _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'example.com']); to our tracking code, right? But my question is: does it matter if a) we don't need to track www.example.com (this is tracked under a seperate account and property) and b) the default URL for our property is set to subdomain1.example.com? Will either of these have any impact on data collection?

• Abandoment to blame for the last JavaScript file not always being loaded?

  I have a code snippet for an app that users are loading as a 3rd party script on their site. The general sequence is as follows: Site loads http://www.example.com/foo.js foo.js does stuff 1 to 2 seconds later, foo.js loads bar.js Now in a perfect world, I'd want to see matching counts for the calls to foo.js and bar.js. However, bar.js loads only about 94% of the time. I'm wondering how much of this discrepancy might be attributable to site abandonment given the fact that bar.js is delayed by 1 or 2 seconds. I posted here instead of StackOverflow since I think it's more a question about what would be typical time on page when users abandon the page.

  I developed a Flash website for a client and added the following .htaccess file in the root directory and the non-www to www redirect works perfectly. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^website.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.website.com/$1 [L,R=301] I was also asked to add a Wordpress blog so I put it in a new directory folder (as opposed to a sub domain) with so the URL is www.website.com/blog Does Google now see the main site and blog as two different websites? Do I need to link them together using another .htaccess file in the Wordpress Root so Google automatically crawls the whole domain? Any help appreciated....

• Can I use a 302 redirect to serve up static content from an URL with escaped_fragment?

  We would like to serve up SEO-friendly Ajax-driven content. We are following this documentation. Has anyone ever tried to write a 302 redirect into the .htaccess file, that takes the ?_escaped_fragment= string and send that to a static page?, for example /snapshot/yourfilename/. How will Google react to this? I've gone through the documentation and it's not very clear. The below quote is from Google's documentation this is what I find. I'm not sure if they are saying that you can redirect the _escaped_fragment_ URL to a different static page, or if this is to redirect the hashtag URL to static content? Thoughts? From Google's site: Question: Can I use redirects to point the crawler at my static content? Redirects are okay to use, as long as they eventually get you to a page that's equivalent to what the user would see on the #! version of the page. This may be more convenient for some webmasters than serving up the content directly. If you choose this approach, please keep the following in mind: Compared to serving the content directly, using redirects will result in extra traffic because the crawler has to follow redirects to get the content. This will result in a somewhat higher number of fetches/second in crawl activity. Note that if you use a permanent (301) redirect, the url shown in our search results will typically be the target of the redirect, whereas if a temporary (302) redirect is used, we'll typically show the #! url in search results. Depending on how your site is set up, showing #! may produce a better user experience, because the user will be taken straight into the AJAX experience from the Google search results page. • Photos being copied all over the place

  We have a rather popular website with plenty of photos. Our whole business depends on our content - and the photos are important in this. We invest a lot of time, effort, and money into taking these pictures. On our website we have clear copyright notices, we have the website name and logo in the photos, and we have a Photo Licensing page which states the prices of licensing our photos. Despite all this, our photos are copied by personal and commercial websites alike. We really want to do something about this. We do not want them to take out the photos and leave it at that. We want them to pay for the usage, as we clearly state on our website. Now a few questions come to mind: Can we legally force them to pay right away? Or are we obligated to first write a "Cease and Desist" letter? Photos are used on websites throughout the world. Are there any worldwide rules for this? Has anybody experience with doing these things outside of their home country? Should we hire a lawyer in any country? Or could a local lawyer contact oversees companies directly?

• How can I superscript a single character throughout my site?

  Finishing up development work for a client and they have a late request to superscript every occurrence of the &reg character throughout the site. I merely get by with CSS, but not even sure CSS provides the best solution here. how can I make a global change to every occurrence of a single character in the site copy without going back and adding tags everywhere? if the best solution does involve inserting a span or other tag I'm thinking it could be accomplished with a database query (all the copy is wired up to a CMS).

• Question about mod_rewrite rule for redirecting failing pages

  I'm setting up a mod_rewrite rule that redirects failing pages to a custom Page Not Found page. This is with Wordpress. I'm using the guide here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/rewrite/rewrite_guide_advanced.html#redirect404. My rule so far looks like this: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.+) http://example.com/?page_id=254 [R] This works. It seems to be a combination of the first and second suggestion that worked, since the -U flag did nothing. My question is, out of curiosity why the following happens: When I change REQUEST_FILENAME to REQUEST_URI (as the second example suggests), the page loads, but none of the style sheets load. All of my formatting is gone, and this happens on every page. Can anyone think of why this might happen?

  Hey all, I know there's been questions about this before, but mine is a little more specific. I work for a high traffic website and we want to start tracking our visitors better. Unfortunately, Google Analytics is not an option at the moment, so what I'm looking for is some alternatives, preferrably server-side (but not necessarily). We're currently running Urchin, but what I'm missing most there is the way you can set conversions in Analytics and then track (for example) which keywords convert better or which landing pages convert better. Also, A/B testing is something I really miss. Which analytics tools can be compared to analytics in terms of advanced segmentation, navigation summaries, A/B testing, etc?

• Why blogger puts BR tags only when content served via RSS feed?

  I have a problem with using my new blog RSS feed. I wrote a post (the first one) with some code examples formatted by SyntaxHighlighter. To paste a code sample I'm switching from WYSIWYG to HTML view and put the code inside pre tag like this (don't worry, h4 tag was opened a line above the screenshot area): The problem is that such pre tag, when later accessed via RSS feed contains br tags instead of new line characters. Below is screenshot of the adequate RSS source code: What's most important when accessed via www, the post html is formatted fine, no brs inside pre. I verified that by downloading the blog post with wget. So I believe this isn't SyntaxHighlighter issue nor any 'new line' formatting on blog post save. This is a real problem as I want aggregate my blog on employers blog and all formatting of code examples is broken because of that. The base question is: how to get rid of those unwanted brs served via RSS? What's strangest friend of mine also uses blogger for such aggregation and he has no such issue. I checked his RSS feed and there are no brs inside pre tags. We also compared settings of our blogs. However we have found no clue. The blog post RSS for the blog (just check source and search for string: pre class="brush) Mentioned friend's blog Last thing: I see content served from RSS is now also html encoded. If I remember well, it wasn't previously.

• Deploying my first website!

  I have built a data driven website - an asp.net website, using the entity framework. In my solution I have 4 projects - the web application PresentationLayer, and 3 class libraries - Data Layer, Business and Common Layer. In one of these libraries, Common Layer I have my Model (MyModel.edmx). I have always tested my application on Cassini - Asp.Net Development Server. I have never touched IIS in my life. I bought a domain and hosting on go daddy. My logic tells me to grab my four folders (1 for each layer) and simply move them to the root folder. But I know I'm wrong since then the home page would be mywebsite.org/presentationlayer/default.aspx and second of all I start getting a bunch of errors where files do not load or they are not found. I also know that I need to manage the web.config but I don't have any experience where to start. I'm not sure if this is a problem but I also have a web service included in my presentation layer.

• How to prevent a 404 Error when creating a subdomain and using www to access it?

  I have installed a multi-site installation of WordPress onto my domain. I then added the necessary code to the wp-config.php file and .htaccess as instructed by WordPress. I also installed a plugin called Quick Page/Post Redirect Plugin which allowed me to place a 301 redirect onto the main domain as I only want to use the sub domain and not the main domain. Then I also added the following line of code to the wp-config.php file to redirect the main domain define( 'NOBLOGREDIRECT', 'URL Redirect Address' ); The site works fine with a redirect on the main domain and my subdomain runs fine when you type in subdomain.example.com or http://subdomain.example.com. However when I enter www.subdomain.example.com or http://www.subdomain.example.com the following error message is returned: Not Found The requested URL / was not found on this server. Apache/2.4.9 (Unix) Server at www.subdomain.domain.com Port 80 Any help with this would be much appreciated.

• Specific website not working on my connection [closed]

  For some reason, the website http://www.woopra.com/ doesn't work well (shows as plain html, no css/images/JS) on my computer and my Android tablet (they both share the same internet connection). It does however, work on my WP 7.5 phone (3G). When I try to set a wifi hotspot and use the tablet it still doesn't work (tried to clean cache). I tried FF, Chrome and IE (multiple versions). What is going on here? I'm clueless! Thanks.

• Vanilla forum personal journal tool

  I am developing a forum for a research project, i am using Vanilla forum (though i am not tied to this yet). Another feature of this site will be a personal journal/diary/blog. Only the user and administrators will have access to the journal. The journal does not need any advanced features. Does anybody have any suggestions on software/script that could easily be integrated with Vanilla forum for this purpose? My first thought was using Wordpress but it is a bit to complex to adminstrate as the site is meant to be simple. And i dont really see how it can be intregrated easily the way i want it.
