• Problem with Arcam rpac and Ubuntu 12.04

  I have recently (?mistakenly) purchased an Arcam rpac USB DAC for my Ubuntu (12.04) PC. I have torn out all but 3 of my hairs trying to get this to work and have had absolutely no luck so far. I can see the Arcam USB audio device when i run aplay -l, however I cannot see it listed under the Sound settings. I can see the soundcard device when running alsamixer also, but if I try and select it, alsamixer crashes, stating "cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument". Any ideas how to get this working (if it's even possible)? Does anyone else out there have the rpac with ubuntu? Thank you! Aman

• Trouble with FGLRX in quantal x86_64

  it's the third time i have to reinstall quantal because the fglrx is making me sick. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 (the code ir RS880).When i install Ati Driver, i don't have any problems, but when i reboot, the resolution is minimal and the launcher isn't visible, i can only use the things that are in desktop and use the terminal using CTRL+ALT+T. i've tried to make specific distribution page, downloading the legacy driver from AMD, and another thing: when i had 12.04 jockey told me that i could install some drivers, i had trouble, but that doesn't matter. now, the option to install drivers doesn't tell me about any drivers, i mean, its blank. At the moment i'm using the free drivers (Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880M. is there any alternative ? or i'll have to live with the free drivers ? Thanks a lot ! I KNOW I HAVE TO INSTALL LEGACY DRIVERS, I'VE INSTALLED THEM, THEY DON'T WORK.

  The scenario: Having a Controller that controls a view composed of complex subviews. Each one of those subviews is a separated class in a separate file. For example, one of those subviews is called ButtonsView, and has a bunch of buttons. The Controller has to access those buttons. Would accessing those buttons like this: controllerMainView.buttonsView.firstButton.state(); be a violation of the LOD? On one hand, it could be yes because the controller is accessing the inner hierarchy of the view. On the other, a Controller should be aware of what happens inside the view and how is composed. Any thoughts?

I am going to use BUTT(Broadcast using this tool) Encoder and would like to be able to run BUTT on any computer so that other people can broadcast to my server from anywhere. • What am I risking if I don't update my SDK/JDK and bundled runtime/JRE every time there's a security update?

  It seems like there's a new major security hole patched in Java every other week, and I would assume the same goes for other development platforms. After years of frustration trying to get customers to install and configure a compatible JRE on their systems, we started bundling one with our software. (By bundling, I mean we extract a copy of the JRE in our installation directory--we don't install the JRE and configure it as the system default.) The problem is, it's a hassle having to keep that JRE up-to-date because first we have to retest everything to make sure the update didn't break anything (it has broken some of our third-party dependencies in the past). How seriously, if at all, are we putting our customers at risk if we don't update our SDK/JDK and the runtime/JRE that we bundle with our product every time there's a security update? Is it reasonable to just update on a periodic schedule--say, once every 6 months or so?

• Is it possible to lose some directories when upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04?

  Last day I upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 desktop to Ubuntu 12.04. I was running a KVM virtual about 7 machines and managed by virt-manage software. Anyway when I finished upgrading I found that virt-manager is not working. So I had to reconfigure it again and install some other missing packages that was deleted! Eventually, I managed to solve this issue. Then I started to restore my virtual machines. I restored 2 machines without any problems. The third and fourth ones (Windows) made a check disk that lasted more that 6 hours but finally it worked. Other machines I can't find their attached hard disks. I don't know what happened but I can't find those files. Does upgrading delete files? Is there anyway to restore those files?

• Multi Monitor Setup Problems

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I have until recently been using a nVida Graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT) with two monitors attached, this all worked fine and dandy. A couple of days ago I bought two new identical LCD monitors for a multi monitor setup and two ATI graphics cards (ATI Sapphire Radeon HD5450). NOTE *All monitors work fine in Windows XP, 2k, Vista and 7 After I had booted into Ubuntu only one display came on, that I kind of expected anyway, then I removed the driver for the nVidia card and downloaded the ATI version which gave me the ATI Catalyst Control Center - in that only two of the displays were showing the third was disabled and showing unknown driver. I enabled the third monitor that stated "Unkown Driver" and had to reboot, upon reboot none of the displays work. I restarted and booted up into recovery mode and from now that is only what I can get into using a failsafe driver. It seems according to the log that a server is already active for Display 0 and I have to remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. This is what the log file is saying: Fatal Server Error Server is already active for display 0 if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again. (WW) xf86 closeconsole: KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor (WW) xf86 closeconsole: VT_GETSTATE failed: Bad file descriptor ddxSigGiveUp: closing log I have tried looking at my xorg.config file but unfortunately I have not really got a clue as to how it "should" be - I have tried regenerating it using this command from a terminal: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg but that had no effect so I am currently stuck in failsafe driver mode but two monitors are active but are mirroring each other. I hope that this is not to long - looking back I have been going on a bit! but I am just trying to explain as much as I can... I have asked this on Linuxquestions but nobody seems to know either or at least I have not had any responses. Could some kind soul please help explain what I can do from here? I would be eternally grateful. • How far can you get in iOS without learning PhotoShop or another graphic design program? [on hold]

  I'm in the process of learning iOS, and I'm coming from a web dev background where CSS controls 70-90% of the UI, and Python/C++ desktop dev where there are highly customizable UI toolkits for most things. I'm trying to figure out how people make good-looking apps without graphic design skills. You always hear about some 8 year old or 14 year old who made a successful app. So I assume that even if the required code was relatively basic, the app must have looked good if it was a success. But I find it really unlikely that these kids have advanced PhotoShop skills as well as having learned iOS programming at such a young age. Frankly, the same goes for most independent app developers....as they say, unicorns don't exist. So what's the deal? Can you make a good-looking, market quality app without those skills? What are the limitations?

• Server 13.10 Install Hangs

  I'm trying to install Server 13.10 on some old hardware for testing (HP/Compaq dc5850, with Athlon X2 2.3 GHz dual core, 4GB RAM). The third screen is "Select Language" and the machine appears to hang. Ath e selection screen, the keyboard and mouse does not work. I integrity checked the CD and it checked out OK. I also performed a second ISO download and it cross checked with my initial download: $ md5 Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso MD5 (Desktop/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e MD5 (Downloads/ubuntu-13.10-server-amd64.iso) = 4d1a8b720cdd14b76ed9410c63a00d0e I was able to install Server 12.04 on the same machine. The problem with 12.04 is the OpenStack packages are too old, and I wanted to try something with fresher packages. My problem appears similar to I cannot install Ubuntu Server 12.10. The Installer hangs at the language selection, but my ISOs appear to be good and the disc appears to be good. Any ideas?

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible. • Why can't I access hw:1,0 until gstreamer-properties is run once?

  Not necessarily an Ubuntu-specific question but I wasn't sure where else to ask. I have an AverMedia DVD EZMaker 7 which plugs into USB and works well on Ubuntu 12.04. I downloaded and installed the official drivers without error. However, when I try: gst-launch alsasrc device="hw:1,0" ! alsasink device="hw:0,0" it tells me: Setting pipeline to PAUSED ... Pipeline is live and does not need PREROLL ... Setting pipeline to PLAYING ... New clock: GstAudioSrcClock which is the normal output, however there is no audible sound. Trying the command again doesn't help. If I run gstreamer-properties and close it right away (don't need to touch any controls), THEN the gst-launch command works. If I unplug the device and plug it back in or restart the computer, I have to run gstreamer-properties again. What is gstreamer-properties doing that enables the audio?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using Unity interface. Unity is working quite nice so far but i really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets show useful quickinfo. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get these infos onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found at one place.

• Triple monitors on hybrid video system GeForce+Intel

  I use Lenovo Ideapad Z580A with hybrid video: GeForce+Intel with Ubuntu 12.10 x64 Ukrainian. It has internal display and two outputs: HDMI and VGA. When I connect third display to VGA all displays go black. Pressing alt+backspace and login causes output to two displays: internal and VGA. System Settings - Displays (or monitors - I have Ukrainian interface) shows three displays: two are on, one (DVI) is off. Turning DVI on and pressing apply causes an error: Can not set configuration of controller CRTC 65. BIOS setting is Optimus (two video cards). Driver for GeForce is Nouveau. With best regards. • Starting Game Programming in C++, where to begin for optimal cross-platform development?

  I wish to begin learning game development in C++. I have knowledge in syntax and the console using Visual C++ 2010, however I want to begin programming. My only problem is that I want to be able to support many platforms including Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. As I get better, I also hope I can submit games to XBLIG (or XBLA) and Steam, and even the Google Play Store (But that would take some porting and major redesign of controls). I have looked into c++ and SDL but I have no idea how to get started. I have Visual C++ 2010 installed and I hope I can still use that as other C++ IDEs are quit outdated. Because I want to stick with Visual C++ and SDL (unless there is a better library than SDL), there is not much room for debate but rather how to create projects to support cross-platform development.

From wikipedia: The biz TLD was created to relieve some of the demand for domain names in the com top-level domain, and to provide an alternative for businesses whose preferred domain name in com had already been registered by another party. .org at least implies an organization, whereas .com is the most generic 'commercial'. But .biz seems like a total duplicate that doesn't seem in widespread use <pun>and deserves to be closed. </pun>. Does .biz have any advantages over .com? Are .biz domains worth registering if .com is already taken?

• Should an image be able to resize itself in OOP?

  I'm writing an app that will have an Image entity, and I'm already having trouble deciding whose responsibility each task should be. First I have the Image class. It has a path, width, and other attributes. Then I created an ImageRepository class, for retrieving images with a single and tested method, eg: findAllImagesWithoutThumbnail(). But now I also need to be able to createThumbnail(). Who should deal with that? I was thinking about having an ImageManager class, which would be an app-specific class (there would also be a third party image manipulation reusable component of choice, I'm not reinventing the wheel). Or maybe it would be 0K to let the Image resize itself? Or let the ImageRepository and ImageManager be the same class? What do you think?
