• How do I get started writing a .Net-wrapper around C++ Omniorb-stubs

  Hello there, my job is to access a CPRBA-server-application from .NET 3.5. After evaluating projets like IIOP.Net (undefined state) and products like VisiBroker (expensive) I'd like to do it "by myself" and write a .Net-Wrapper around C++-Stubs generated my Omniidl (the Omniorb IDL to C++ generator). This means writing some kind of layer of managed code (CLI) around the unmanaged C++ code. My question is: Has anyone experience in this topic? I honestly don't know how to do it the best way. Right now I plan to create a managed class for every unmanaged class, each managed class itself has a member to an instance of the unmanaged class, which is not garbage-collected. Is this the right way to do it or am I on the wrong path? Thanks in advance!

  I've written a Korn Shell script that sets an array the following way: set -A fruits Apple Orange Banana Strawberry but when I'm trying to run it from within cron, it raises the following error: Your "cron" job on myhost /myScript.sh produced the following output: myScript.sh: -A: bad option(s) I've tried many crontab syntax variants, such as: Attempt 1: 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /path/to/script/myScript.sh Attempt 2: 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /path/to/script/./myScript.sh Attempt 3: 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * cd /path/to/script && ./myScript.sh Any workaround would be sincerely appreciated. • Which has been the most reliable, fastest Windows C++ profiler that you have used?

  I need to profile a real time C++ app on Windows. Most of the available profilers are either terribly expensive, total overkill, or both. I don't need any .NET stuff. Since it is a real time app, I need the profiler to be as fast as possible. It would be excellent if it integrated in some way with Visual Studio 2005/2008, but that's not necessary. If this description reminds you of a profiler that you have used, I would really like to know about it. I am hoping to draw from people's use of C++ profilers on Windows to pinpoint one that will do the job. Thanks.

• Learning Objective-C 2.0 and ASP.NET 4.0 simultaneously?

  (HOBBY) I own a Macbook Pro and iPod Touch so developing iPhone/iPod/iPad apps seems like a logical thing to do in order to get some experience in the programming field. Besides I want to write a new application similar to the Capsuleer (Character skills monitor app for EVE Online MMO) but with more features. It's something I'd love to have on my own iPod Touch and I am sure other people will welcome a new EVE Online app for their iPhone or iPod Touch. (CAREER) I want to learn ASP.NET (and possibly Silverlight later on) for my potential future job. I plan to work in the .NET field, so it's a good idea for me to start learning C# and ASP.NET ASAP. Is it a good idea to learn completely unrelated technologies at the same time? Or would it be better to learn one thing at a time? Objective-C first, and ASP.NET second. Or vice versa. Thanks, Sahat

• xvfb on a machine with a display, can an application run 'in the background?'

  I'm setting up to cron a web scraping job, using xvfb, firefox, and watir on my Mac OS X. In testing the script so far, firefox pops up visibly on the local desktop, the watir script executes, and then firefox exits (I quit firefox in my script). I'd like to set the xvfb DISPLAY such that firefox will run, but won't be seen on the local desktop, running 'in the background' so to speak. Nothing I've been able to find online discusses such a possibility - nor explains that it's not possible. Is it possible? If so, what do I need to do to make it work?

• Django equivalent to paster for backend processes

  I use pylons in my job, but I'm new to django. I'm making an rss filtering application, and so I'd like to have two backend processes that run on a schedule: one to crawl rss feeds for each user, and another to determine relevance of individual posts relative to users' past preferences. In pylons, I'd just write paster commands to update the db with that data. Is there an equivalent in django? EG is there a way to run the equivalent of python manage.py shell in a non-interactive mode?

• Visual Studio Unit Testing of Windows Forms

  We're working on a project here in Visual Studio 2008. We're using the built-in testing suite provided with it (the Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting namespace). It turns out, that much to our chagrin, a great deal of complexity (and therefore errors) have wound up coded into our UI layer. While our unit tests do a decent job of covering our business layer, our UI layer is a constant source of irritation. We'd ideally like to unit-test that, as well. Does anyone know of a good "Microsoft-compatible" way of doing that in visual studio? Will it introduce some sort of conflict to 'mix' unit testing frameworks like nUnitForms with the Microsoft stuff? Are there any obvious bear traps I should be aware of with unit-testing forms?

• getting number of hours until the next event

  I've got a table with this data: [ID] [event_name] [last_event] 1 stats 2011-01-01 01:47:32 last_event is a timestamp. The event occurs every 48 hours (it's a cron job). I'd like to show my users the number of hours until the event executes again. So far I've got: SELECT (lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) FROM `cron_status` which gives me the exact time and date of the next occurence: 2011-01-03 01:47:32. So I figured if I subtracted the current datetime... SELECT ((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE()) FROM `cron_status` which (I think?) gives me the difference in unix time: 1980015. But if I divide that by 3600 to convert the seconds to hours... SELECT (((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE())/3600) FROM `cron_status` I get numbers an order of magnitude too high: 549.99. Where am I going wrong? The target is returning the number of hours until the next execution. Thank you!

I have successfully configured it to work with Maven2 and Git as well. Next, I created a job/project (A Java/Spring application), and got it to build without error on Jenkins as well. • Manipulating Exchange 2003 shared contacts folder remotely

  I've got a CRM web app running on a remote server that needs to synchronise it's contacts with the in-house Exchange 2003 shared contacts. I know very little about Exchange - we are pricing a job for a new client so I'm really just getting a sense of the scope at this stage. Exchange 2003 doesn't seem to support web-services. What would the typical approach to this problem be? My initial instinct would be to open port 80 in the Exchange server, run a simple webserver and POST to it and then talk to exchange via OLE automation scripting (if that's what people are still calling it!) Any other suggestions?

• Getting user data from Active Directory using PL/SQL

  I had a discussion today regarding an Oracle procedure I wrote some time ago. I wanted to get 7500 user email addresses from Active Directory using PL/SQL. AD will return a maximum of 1000 rows and the LDAP provider used by Oracle will not support paging. Therefore, my solution was to filter on the last two characters of the sAMAccountName (*00,*01,*02...etc.). This results in 126 queries (100 for account names ending in digits, 26 for those ending in a letter...this was sufficient for my AD setup). The person I was speaking to (it was a job interview by the way) said he could have done it a better way, but he would not tell me what that method was. Could anybody hazard a guess at what this method was?

• [PHP] - Lowering script memory usage in a "big" file creation

  Hi there people, it looks like I'm facing a typical memory outage problem when using a PHP script. The script, originally developed by another person, serves as an XML sitemap creator, and on large websites uses quite a lot of memory. I thought that the problem was related due to an algorithm holding data in memory until the job was done, but digging into the code I have discovered that the script works in this way: open file in output (will contain XML sitemap entries) in the loop: ---- for each entry to be added in sitemap, do fwrite close file end Although there are no huge arrays or variables being kept in memory, this technique uses a lot of memory. I thought that maybe PHP was buffering under the hood the fwrites and "flushing" data at the end of the script, so I have modified the code to close and open the file every Nth record, but the memory usage is still the same.... I'm debugging the script on my computer and watching memory usage: while script execution runs, memory allocation grows. Is there a particular technique to instruct PHP to free unsed memory, to force flushing buffers if any? Thanks

  Spring-data-rest does a great job exposing entities via their primary key for GET, PUT and DELETE etc. operations. /myentityies/123 It also exposes search operations. /myentities/search/byMyOtherKey?myOtherKey=123 In my case the entities have a number of alternate keys. The systems calling us, will know the objects by these IDs, rather than our internal primary key. Is it possible to expose the objects via another URL and have the GET, PUT and DELETE handled by the built-in spring-data-rest controllers? /myentities/myotherkey/456 We'd like to avoid forcing the calling systems to have to make two requests for each update. I've tried playing with @RestResource path value, but there doesn't seem to be a way to add additional paths.

• Searching for empty methods

  I am currently working on a security audit/code review of our system. This requires me to check all pages in the system and make sure that the code behind contains two methods that are used to check security. Sometimes the code in these methods get commented out to make testing easier. So, my question is does anyone know an easy way to search code, make sure the methods are present, and to determine which ones have no code or have all the code commented out. It would make my job much easier if I can get a list instead of having to look at every file... I'm sure I could write this myself, but I thought someone may know of something that already exists. • Can I use WCF NET.TCP Protocol from Silverlight 4 for a public website ?

  Does anyone know if the new NET.TCP feature of Silverlight 4 can be used for public websites ? From what I know, in the Silverlight 4 Beta they announced that WCF NET.TCP can only be used for intranet applications. The reason I am asking this is because I want to recode my Silverlight multiplayer chess game (build with SL 3 Sockets support) based on the new SL 4 WCF TCP communication protocol. My Socket implementation is build from scratch and have big issues with thread safe and few unsolvable bugs from my side. I am sure that SL 4 team did a great job and they simplified all hard part for me, letting us, developers, concentrate more on the game code instead on underlying communication layers.

I read the documentation but couldn't find a clear tutorial to set up this server. I got no knowleadge about Java so it makes my job harder.   I'm usin the OpenPrinter function and the first parameter the function gets called "pPrinterName" and that's it's MSDN description: [in] Pointer to a null-terminated string that specifies the name of the printer or print server, the printer object, the XcvMonitor, or the XcvPort. For a printer object use: PrinterName,Job xxxx. For an XcvMonitor, use: ServerName,XcvMonitor MonitorName. For an XcvPort, use: ServerName,XcvPort PortName. Obviously I'm interested in the bold part. What exactly is XcvPort? I know it seems like a question of lazy person but I really couldn't find info abou this concept.   Please see screenshot Goal: id like to have comments nested 1 level deep The comments would be arranged so that rating of the parent is in descending order the rating of the children comments is irrelevant The left hand side of the screenshot shows the output that Id like. The RHS shows the table data. All of the comments are held in 1 table. Im a beginner with SQL queries, the best I can do is: SELECT * FROM [Comments] WHERE ([ArticleId] = @ArticleId) ORDER BY [ThreadId] DESC, [DateMade] This somewhat does the job, but it obviously neglects the rating. So the above statement would show output where Bobs Comment and all of the children comments are before Amy's and her childrens comments. How can I run this query correctly?

• How do I use a batch copy to update files?

  Hello, I need help writing a batch file to update templates on a database. Basically, all our clients have their own folder, with multiple templates inside. Due to the computer illiteracy of my office (sigh), there's no real better way to fix this. However, I need a way to update those templates in a batch. For instance \\SERVER\New Client Template Folder\Correspondence\Transmittal Letter.WPD is updated. I then need to copy it to: \\SERVER\Client Files\Client 1\Correspondence; \\SERVER\Client Files\Client 2\Correspondence; ...etc. Essentially, I need to copy to \\SERVER\Client Files\\*\\, and I need to make it a batch file that I can train someone else to use whenever I leave this job.   Hi folks, I have a c++ app that calls another python one (bundled into an exe with py2exe) So I have 2 apps. So I was wondering: What if my c++ did what py2exe does? i.e. embed the python app in the c++ one. This way I won't depend on py2exe and its configurations nighmares (yes, it has some) Hence my questions: how does py2exe work (so I can do its job with my c++ app) What about just embedding the whole python app with the c++? I read the python doc about embedding, did an example (a very simple one that does PyRun_SimpleString) but what about a whole python app with tons of modules? (zipimport maybe?) But since the last 7 days I have been asked to work in java (J2SE 1.4) and I am working in that. and gradually I am finding interest in that. I want to learn more about it and since I am finding a lot of similarity between C# and Java(what ever I have gleaned + worked so far in those 7 days), I am planning to steer my career in that. But having spent for more than 2 years in C# and then moving to java, will it be a problem in future (say after 3/4 months) if I need to change my job.. I mean my most of the exp. lies in C# and just started JAVA. so how the technical panel will accept me if I need to change the platform? Thanks

• Find groups with both validated, unvalidated users

  (Not my real MySQL schema, but illustrates what needs done.) Users can belong to many groups, and groups have many users. users: id INT validated TINYINT(1) groups: id INT name VARCHAR(20) groups_users: group_id INT user_id INT I need to find groups that contain both validated and unvalidated users (validated being 1 or 0, respectively), in order to perform a specific manual maintenance task. There are thousands of users, all belong to at least one group, but a group usually only has 2-5 users. This is a live production server, so I could probably craft a query myself, but the last one I tried took a matter of minutes before I killed it. (I'm not one of those brilliant SQL wizards.) I suppose I could take the server down for maintenance, but, if possible, a query that gets this job done in a matter of seconds would be fantastic. Thanks!

• HBase as a multimap

  Hi guys, I'm doing some large scale text processing work and I'm trying to get started with Hadoop and HBase. One of the things I need to do is build a multimap of some stuff, which I later use to look up things and get all items with a certain key (in a M/R job). Would it be OK to use HBase and insert many rows with the same key and rely on versions/timestamps to achieve a multimap-like setup or is this a bad idea? The multimap is built up in the reduce phase of a Mapreduce task by the way, or at least in the way I've formulated it on paper. Thanks! If more information is needed, I'd be happy to provide it.
