• what do i need to do now that I want to take programming hobby to next level ?

  i've always wanted to make games but did not start actively learning programming by myself until 1st year of university. i kept going throughout university learning new languages, showing off things i had made, while neglecting my major in Biology. Anyways, i've ended up with an Economics degree, with a portfolio of SaaS and web apps i had created so i could eat during my final year. So far, I'm getting a few interviews here and there in web programming positions. When I get a logic pretest, I fail miserably. or job requires comp sci degree. I mean I can easily design and code an entire app which I emphasize through my portfolio.... but i dont know why I am so slow at logic puzzles on prescreening interview... So what should I do now ? get certificates in languages ? go back to school and learn CS ? is it too late to get into windows programming jobs than web programming ?

• Slow Client connection blocks Mongrel

  I have a Apache + Haproxy + Mongrel setup for my rails application. When I hit a particular server page, mongrel takes around 100ms to process the request and I get the page in around 5 secs due to data transmission time on my slow home connection. Now I see that during these 5 secs of data transmission, mongrel does not serve any other request. I am surprised as that means mongrel is serving the response html to the client and is blocked till the client receives it. Shouldn't serving response be the job of Apache? This puts serious bottleneck in the no of requests Mongrel can serve as that would depend on the speed of the client connection. Is there any way that html generated by mongrel is served by apache/haproxy or any other web server like nginx? I wonder how the other high traffic sites are managing it?

• MPI Large Data all to all transfer

  My application of MPI has some process that generate some large data. Say we have N+1 process (one for master control, others are workers), each of worker processes generate large data, which is now simply write to normal file, named file1, file2, ..., fileN. The size of each file may be quite different. Now I need to send all fileM to rank M process to do the next job, So it's just like all to all data transfer. My problem is how should I use MPI API to send these files efficiently? I used to use windows share folder to transfer these before, but I think it's not a good idea. I have think about MPI_file and MPI_All_to_all, but these functions seems not to be so suitable for my case. Simple MPI_Send and MPI_Recv seems hard to be used because every process need to transfer large data, and I don't want to use distributed file system for now.

• Image Upload directly from client to remote server? Spring/Tomcat

  Just wondering what the common solution is for this. We have two web servers that are load balanced and a separate server that holds our images. Our current process is that a user uploads an image directly to the web server (which ever they are connected to) and we enter a job into our DB. Another process checks for image jobs every few mins and copies the image from the web server up to the image server. The delay from when a user uploads to when its visible is not ideal. We could tighten the loop on how often we check for image jobs but ideally I would like to have user uploaded images to go directly to the image server rather than copying twice. How should this be done? Is there anything in spring to deal with this ? Seems like how most would deal with a CDN i would think? I want to limit the time it takes for an image that a user uploads is available on our site...

• Linux reboot() system call: why it calls do_exit(0) after kernel_halt()?

  This is related to: http://stackoverflow.com/a/13413099/1284631 Now, the question is: Why the reboot() system call, when called with LINUX_REBOOT_CMD_HALT parameter (see here: http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.6.6/kernel/sys.c#L480) is calling do_exit(0) after having already called kernel_halt(), as calling kernel_halt() boils down to calling stop_this_cpu() (see here: http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.6.6/arch/x86/kernel/process.c#L519), as part of native_machine_halt() (see here: http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v3.6.6/arch/x86/kernel/reboot.c#L680). Or, it seems to me that stop_this_cpu() is never returning (it ends with an infinite loop). So, it is do_exit(0) called just in case that kernel_halt() doesn't do its job and it return? Why not panic() directly instead, then?

• SSIS - Connection Management Within a Loop

  Hi I have the following SSIS package: The problem is that within the Foreach loop a connection is opened and closed for each iteration. On running SQL Profiler I see a series of: Audit Login RPC:Completed Audit Lout The duration for the login and the RPC that actually does the work is minimal. However, the duration for the logout is significant, running into several seconds each. This causes the JOB to run very slowly - taking many hours. I get the same problem when running either on a test server or stand-alone laptop. Could anyone please suggest how I may change the package to improve performance? Also, I have noticed that when running the package from Visual Studio, it looks as though it continues to run with the component blocks going amber then green but actually all the processing has been completed and SQL profiler has dropped silent? • Writing a PHP web crawler using cron

  Hi all I have written myself a web crawler using simplehtmldom, and have got the crawl process working quite nicely. It crawls the start page, adds all links into a database table, sets a session pointer, and meta refreshes the page to carry onto the next page. That keeps going until it runs out of links That works fine however obviously the crawl time for larger websites is pretty tedious. I wanted to be able to speed things up a bit though, and possibly make it a cron job. Any ideas on making it as quick and efficient as possible other than setting the memory limit / execution time higher?

  Hi all, This may well be a little of an open-ended question The site I am working on requires to be optimised for performance. One of the key areas is to optimise the file sizes of the images used upon the site. Unfortunatley these images are being created by employees who do not have the required knowledge for creating images for the web, and it is my job to produce a set of guidelines for them to use. I was wondering whether there was any resource/guidlines/literature regarding typical images file sizes for images of different dimensions - as I would like to include something like this to aid them to ensure their images are being created properly. • How to column-ify an output from a certain program?

  I have a program that generates and outputs a sequence of simple sample math homework tasks, like: 1 + 1 = ... 3 + 3 = ... 2 + 5 = ... 3 + 7 = ... 4 + 2 = ... a sequence can be quite long, and I'd like to save space when this sequence is printed by converting it as follows: 1 + 1 = ... 3 + 7 = ... 3 + 3 = ... 4 + 2 = ... 2 + 5 = ... that is, wrapping the lines into the two or more columns. I was expecting the column linux utility to do the job using the -c N option witn N=2, however, it still outputs the lines in one column whatever the N is. How would I do the column-ifying of the sequence of lines?

  For my client's custom-built CRM, I want users (technicians) to be notified of changes to marked cases via email. This warrants a simple subscription mapping table between users and cases and automated emails to be sent every time a change is made to a case from within the logging method. How do I send 10-100 emails to subscribed users without bogging down my logging method? My SMTP server is on a peer on my LAN, so sends should be quick, but ideally this should be handled by an external queuing process. I can have a cron job send any outstanding emails every 10 minutes, but for this specific client cases are quite time-sensitive and instant notification (as instant as email can be) would be great. How can I send bulk notification emails from within ASP.NET MVC without bogging down my logging method?

• Java and Different Types of Stacks

  Currently the only stack I know anything about is Vector, I normally use this in place of an array but I understand that there is other types of stacks and they all suit different jobs. The project I am currently working on requires me to be inserting objects in a certain position inside a stack, not always the front of the stack and I am under the impression that a Vector may not be the best class for this job. Could somebody please give me a brief description of the other types of stacks available to me with the Java language and their advantages and disadvantages? Are these names homogeneous? E.g. Are they only used in the Java language or are they used as general terms in Computer Science? Thank you

The question is when to use semantic tag and when to use just to make text bold Should I always use <strong> if client's content files (MS word files) has some words bold in content paragraphs? How can we know when client want to give emphasis to text and when he just want to make text bold for presentation/aesthetic purpose?   A while back I heard on a podcast about a site listing "10 applications to write that will make you a better programmer." I'm desperate to find where this is, or at the very least a decent list from someone here. The thing is, I've been writing code for about 8 years now, and it's my passion. Very few things make me happier than getting lost in some C# or Python. But I've spent the last 2 years in a job that doesn't allow me much time to do what I love. Now everyone knows that the best way to keep your coding sword sharp is to use it, and I've noticed recently that mine is getting dull. Does anyone have any suggestions on some simple programs to help flex my coding muscle? I'm one of those odd few who actually likes writing CRUD applications, so stuff like that would be nice, too.

  Which is the best API to use when accessing a WebCam in .Net? (I know they can be webcam specific, I am willing to buy a new webcam if it means better results). I want to write a desktop application that will take video from a webcam and store it in MPEG4 formats (DivX, Xvid, etc...). I would also like to access bitmap stills from the device so I can do image comparison between frames. I have tried various libraries, and none have really been a great fit (some have performance issues (very inconsistent framerates), some have image quality limitations, some just crash out for seemingly no reason. I want to get high quality video (as high as I can get) and a decent framerate. My webcam is more than up to the job and I was hoping that there would be a nice Managed .Net library around that would help my cause. Are webcam APIs all just incredibly bad?

It is fooling around by throwing coconut down from the balconies of M-storey building. The monkey wants to know the lowest floor when coconut is broken. What is the minimal number of attempts needed to establish that fact? " Conditions: if a coconut is broken, you cannot reuse the same. You are left with only with the other coconut Possible approaches/strategies I can think of are Binary break ups & once you find the floor on which the coconut breaks use upcounting from the last found Binary break up lower index. Window/Slices of smaller sets of floors & use binary break up within the Window/Slice (but on the down side this would require a Slicing algorithm of it's own.) Wondering if there are any other way to do this.

• Planning a skillset for a fallback career [closed]

  I'm not too certain this is a SO question, but I didn't think it belonged in meta either. Long story short, I am bioinformatics researcher. I like to code, it's my favourite part of the job. I have been thinking for a while that if academia is not kind to me, I might seek a career in software development. My current contract is for three years and I would like to spend some time over the next 3 three years learning and practicing software development as possible. Python seems like a popular language and it what I mostly use to do things for me, but I am also in heavy use of R. So my main question is: Are python and R good things to be learning with a sotfware dev goal in mind, and if so, is there any particular type of programming or software that might be useful to have experience with. Hard questions to answer I know, but I thought I would get the answer from people who are in the know. Cheers, Davy.

• Sleep a thread until an event is attended in another thread from a different class

  I have an application that fires 2 threads, the 1st launches another class to do some processing which in turn launches a 3rd class to do yet more processing. The 2nd thread in the main class should wait until some event in the 3rd class completes before it performs its job. How can this be achieved? I had tried implementing a wait/notify to share a lock object between the two threads but technically this will not work as I found the hard way. Can I share a lock between classes? Note, an instance of the 3rd class is declared in the 1st class and passed as parameter to the 2nd class. Also I tried creating boolean value in 3rd class that tells when event is complete then poll 2nd thread till this value is true. This worked but is not very desirable. Also is actionListner a better approach to this problem?

When I have tried it, I get an error that the definition in the generated .g.cs file will hide the parent def.   I'm currently a network engineer, but find myself wanting to get into the world of development. I took a little bit of Java in college, am 27 years old and have been network engineering for 4 years now. I have a mortgage and student loans so going back to school would be difficult. I'm willing to put in however much hardwork is needed around my full time job to learn, but part of me feels I may need actuall schooling to get down some of the advanced concepts. • crontab won't work on mac 10.6.7

  i create a simple cron job by editing /etc/crontab as following: */2 * * * * * php /Users/min/Documents/testcron.php and the testcron.php is simple as: <?php $fd = fopen("/Users/min/Documents/testcron.txt", 'a'); fwrite($fd, "test--cron--\n"); fclose($fd); ?> then simply save the crontab file and hope magic happen, but nothing happened. i even run the command manually and it worked. php /Users/min/Documents/testcron.php anyone have any idea?   Hi, I am using an external asp page (On the company's server - not related to me beside the fact that I'm using it for my job). The asp page has one query in it, I'm writing something in it and it gives me some information. In the information there is a certain line with constant header (let's assume 'HEADER'), I want to build an HTA that pulls the line that contains 'HEADER' to my HTA and display only this line. • Can the Sequence of RecordSets in a Multiple RecordSet ADO.Net resultset be determined, controlled?

  I am using code similar to this Support / KB article to return multiple recordsets to my C# program. But I don't want C# code to be dependant on the physical sequence of the recordsets returned, in order to do it's job. So my question is, "Is there a way to determine which set of records from a multiplerecordset resultset am I currently processing?" I know I could probably decipher this indirectly by looking for a unique column name or something per resultset, but I think/hope there is a better way. P.S. I am using Visual Studio 2008 Pro & SQL Server 2008 Express Edition.

  I have to rewrite and greatly modify parts of a legacy COBOL application. The COBOL source-code is available (around 100.000 lines of copy & pasted code mixed with GOTOs). Some more details on the system: It is a general management system controlling transactions, bank management, customer data and employees of the company I work for. The COBOL-powered database is about 4 Terabytes distributed over 50 old HDDs. (But messing around with them is the sysadmins job) They are using COBOL85 only. Now I have two options: Rewrite and refactor 50% of the old COBOL system, or use X86 assembly. Should I use X86 assembler or COBOL?
