  A few years ago, I felt privileged to be involved in a mature open-source project where my salary was paid by a government research grant. As it turned out, I was ill-equipped for this three-month contract which included some very stressful network support in a medical setting and, to add to that, the project was poorly managed with poor lines of communication. My dream job had suddenly become a nightmare. Never, in my experience, though, did I learn as much about programming in as short a period of time. Psychologically, the only way through this episode in my life was for me to actively look for the good in things and focus on my love of programming. What role has gratitude played in your life as a programmer?

• Can't establish a DB connection. (Maybe threads related)

  Hello, I am getting this exception on the Rufus::Scheduler ActiveRecord::ConnectionTimeoutError: could not obtain a database connection within 5 seconds. The max pool size is currently 30; consider increasing it. I've increased the pool from 10 to 30. And I also monkey patched the method which raises the exception to also call ActiveRecord::Base.verify_active_connections! before doing its job. And I also restarted the service which executes the script so that the new code is run. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you need any other info about environment or whatnot. Thank you.

• Data driven charts and graphs from xml to svg

  I asked this question a week ago, but did not do a good job of describing the problem. Here's a second attempt. I'd like to produce data-driven charts, graphs, and other data visualizations, starting with data in an xml database and ending up with the visualizations as SVG. Here's an example from the W3C. It uses Javascript to create a stacked bar chart as SVG from xml. I'd like to do something similar but use a graphics library (or ???) instead of js to handle the construction of axes, labels, titles, data points, etc. My question, then: what are the options that I should consider ... things like Raphael I suppose, but initially I'd like to cast a wide net and look at many different options. My experience is all with static data visualizations using statistics packages like R, but eventually I'd like to create interactive data visualizations with html5/css3/svg. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  I'm currently looking for some libraries which might help me during iPhone Development using Appcelerator Titanium. I've heard that since version 1.0 it isn't dependant on webkit anymore and it makes app-development more exiting of course, please correct me if i'm wrong. As many people out there i love Javascript Frameworks such as JQuery and Mootools much, but they were build specifically to do a great job within a browser and most of the functionality is not needed within the environment Titanium now provides (DOM-Manipulation etc). Is there any other small library of useful functions i can use for development? Thx in advance.

  Hello, I'm using C# .NET. Its a GUI application. When user clicks a button work is assigned to 4 different background workers. Each take different amount of time and the end result is they populate some variables. I need to call a method which operates on these end results of each bgwoeker and gives the final output. How to accomplish this? Problem here is to be sure that all bgworkers are done with their job.

• Specify artifact version outside of pom

  Is there a way to specify the artifact version outside of the POM file? I have 2 CI projects that build an artifact. One builds a "stable" development version from a 'develop' branch and the other builds an unstable version which is the result of merging all active feature branches into the develop branch. I want the stable version to build as xyz-1.0.jar and the integration build to go in as xyz-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar. Is there a way for the CI job to run a maven task or specify via the command line if a release or snapshot jar should be built without manually modifying the POM? Currently I have the version specified as 1.0 in the pom. I considered using the release plugin but I don't want the automatic version number increase and tagging that it does.

• How to copy files from local machine to server using SSH file transfer protocol?

  I have an Ubuntu 9.10 desktop machine which I use locally. I am setting up a server on a hosting provider. The server will run a very minimal version of Ubuntu server LTS (only LAMP and email server no GUI). I want to write a script (scheduled as a cron job) that will allow me to upload local files onto the server. I want to use [SFTP][1], for security reasons. I am new to shell scripting - but I guess shell scripting is the way to do this (unless I am mistaken). Can anyone provide me with the initial pointers on how to go about writing such a script, in order to SECURELY upload local files to the server? • How to use Crypto++ to extract the textual information in a file?

  I have a file that is signed with a certificate located here. CrytoAPI has not worked out for me because of server differences in 2003 / 2008+, and different file inputs. I am now considering using Crypto++ to get the job done. Essentially, all I would like to do is extract the text information from this file, and others like it, and save it as XML. There are some bits in the XML that are marked as < encoded data but those sections are just base64 encoded, so before I can get to the XML envelope, I need to deal with the certificate thats obfuscating the plain text. Anyone with experience in Crypto++ know how this is done? • Filter a List via Another

  I have a requirement to filter a list of Clients based on if they haven't had any jobs booked in the last x months. In my code I have two lists, one is my Clients and the other is a filtered List of Jobs between today and x months ago and the idea is to filter Clients based on their id not appearing in the jobs list. I tried the following: filteredClients.Where(n => jobsToSearch.Count(j => j.Client == n.ClientID) == 0).ToList(); But I seem to get ALL clients regardless. I can easily do a foreach but this severly slows down the process. How can I filter the client list based on the job list effectively?

• Should a company prevent employees from publishing an app in an appstore in their free time?

  My company is trying to pass a policy forbidding distribution of any application (even free) in any appstore for all developers. Their reasoning is that "outside work activities create a conflict of interest". They don't want that "you use your spare time to work on your app, and once it takes off you quit your job" (quoting the Head of Development). A few developers (myself included) have already said it was an abusive, pointless and most of all counter-productive policy (developers will actually be demotivated to work here under such control and to be denied of the freedom to distribute their project). Personally, I think it is actually in the interest of the company to promote side projects (even commercial activities, if there is no conflict). I'm also curious, is that common practice?

• Clojure for a lisp illiterate

  I am a lifelong object-oriented programmer. My job is primarily java development, but I have experience in a number of languages. Ruby gave me my first real taste of functional programming. I loved the features Ruby borrowed from the functional paradigm such as closures and continuations. Eventually, I graduated to Scala. This has been a great way to gradually learn to approach non-trivial problems in a functional manner. Now I am interested in Clojure. I know all the sexy features that make it enticing (software transactional memory, macros, etc.), but I just can't get used to "thinking in lisp". I've seen Rich Hickey's screencasts aimed at java programmers, but they are geared towards explaining language features and not approaching real world problems. I am looking for any advice or resources which have made this transition easier for others.

  I need to count how many buttons are toggled using the jqueryui checkbox button option - .buttonset(). This needs to happen when a button is toggled. I added a unique class to the labels before applying the button set and have set a click event on it. It fires fine, however it is firing before the jqueryui has processed the click so the result is out of date.   I was thinking QT on OpenGL. Multiplatform ability and being able to be closed (at no cost) at a later point would be important points. But I'm very interested in finding a way that is not only viable but also has the least amount of reinvention of the wheel. e.g. "Why not Ogre? A ready powerful 3D engine without reinventing that part". But I'm very uncertain in what is the optimal collection of tools for that job.

  HI All I need to write a scientific application in C++ doing a lot of computations and using a lot of memory. I have part of the job but due to high requirements in terms of resources I was thinking to start moving to OpenMPI. Before doing that I have a simple curiosity: If I understood the principle of OpenMPI is the developer that has the task of splitting the jobs over different nodes calling SEND and RECEIVE based on node available at that time. Do you know if it does exist some library or OS or whatever that has this capability letting my code reamain as it is now? Basically something that connects all computers and let share as one their memory and CPU? I am a bit confused because of the high material available on the topic. Should I look at cloud computing? or Distributed Shared Memory? Can you help me or address me a bit? Thanks

For Example I have a list of function names as so: functionOne functionThree functionTwo The XML File looks like this: <xml> <function>functionOne</function> <function>functionTwo</function> <function>functionThree</function> </xml> So I would like to sort the list so the function names are as so: functionOne functionTwo functionThree Now Im trying to do this for Variables as well, so there are around 500+ unique 'items'. Does anyone have any idea how I can go about doing this? • How to make windows media player go to previous song in playlist?

  Hi, everyone! I am writing a simple Windows app in c++, that will be able to send commands to windows media player. My problem is that I want my app to move to the previous song in the playlist. IWMPControls::previous() seems to do the job, but its behavior differs from what is written in msdn. In fact this function rewinds current media to the beginning and then (if current position is less than 2-3 seconds) it switches to the previous song. I would like to implement two different buttons (please, don't ask me why :)) - one for rewinding to the beginning, and one - to moving to previous song. Is there any easy way to do this through IWMPControls (or any other WMP-related COM interface)? p.s. I could handle this if I could get the position (index) of the current song in the list. But as far as I read MSDN, it seems to me that there is no easy way to get the current item index from playlist...

• Form with target="_blank" will produce empty POST data in IE6

  I have an iframe containing a form. I want the form to point to a new window when the user submits it. Basically, the following code should do the trick: <?php var_dump($_POST); ?> <form method="post" action="test_post_to_blank.php" target="_blank"> <input type="text" name="test" value="test" /> <input type="submit" /> </form> The problem is that in IE6 a new window is opened with empty POST data. • Not unique table/alias - can't understand why!?

I'm trying to join some tables together in MySQL, but I seem to get an error saying: #1066 - Not unique table/alias: 'calendar_jobs' I really want it to select everything from the cal_events, the 2 user bits and just the destination col from the jobs table, but become "null" if there arn't any job. A right join seemed to fit the bill but doesn't work! Can anyone help!?   Having worked in software development for 12 years, I've recently started to worry about ageism in the industry. Seeing I'm not too bad at what I do I've never really worried about where my next job's going to come from, but the more I look around me the younger software developers seem to get. Although I feel I'm now at the top of my programming game, I have some management experience and I'm now wondering if I should make a fully-fledged leap from development to ensure future career security. I know ageism has traditionally be linked with the IT industry, but given modern employment law makes discrimination illegal, is ageism still a real problem for software developers? Or are my aging neurons deluding me?

• What scripting language would you use to put text over a generated image ?

  I got this question from my cousin: "What will be the best way to create a similar working website just like: http://www.plakletters.nl". I have looked into the website and think that to start of with i'm gonna help my cousin write a script that loads all fonts installed on the system into a dropdownlist. This dropdownlist will post a font value back to the page and will create images with the input of a user that comes from a textbox. This images will have to be created server side, and I also want to give the users the ability (in the future) to lay their own text over an uploaded image, to see what the result will look like on their own image. I found some information about how to create images using php, I don't know if php can output a list of installed fonts from the system it's running on. What scripting language would you use to get this job done? Keep in mind i would just like to start with outputting some images based on user input using a scripting language.
