• How do you learn a class hierarchy quickly?

  Hi, Something I don't enjoy about programming is learning a new API. For example, right now I'm trying to learn Windows Identity Foundation. Its frustrating because I'm going to spend the bulk of the time learning how a few classes work and actually only write several lines of code. In .NET, there are so many types that I seem to spend more time hunting around in msdn for a class than writing code. It also interrupts my workflow while I'm working because I have to type a little bit than look something up. Obviously, I don't have to do this for the basic classes. Whenever new things come though there is definitely some looking up to do. Then I often don't reuse that class enough to really review it or bring it into action. I'm wondering if anybody out there has a found a way to memorize (or look up more efficiently) these object model hierarchies?

  In Hibernate HQL, how would you query through a many-to-many association. If I have a Company with multiple ProductLines and other companies can offer these same product lines, I have a Company entity, a ProductLine entity and an association table CompanyProductLine. In SQL, I can get what I need like this: select * from company c where c.companyId in (select companyId from companyProductLine cpl, productline pl where cpl.productLineId = pl.productLineId and pl.name= 'some value'); My problem sees to lie with the association I defined in the Company.hbm.xml file: <set name="productLines" cascade="save-update" table="CompanyProductLine"> <key column="companyId"/> <many-to-many class="com.foo.ProductLine" column="productLineId" /> </set> Any HQL I seem to come up with will throw a: 'expecting 'elements' or 'indices"' Hibernate exception. Thoughts on what the proper HQL would be?

• Where can I find the transaction protocol used by Automated Teller Machines?

  I'm doing a grad-school software engineering project and I'm looking for the protocol that governs communications between ATMs and bank networks. I've been googling for quite a while now, and though I'm finding all sorts of interesting information about ATMs, I'm surprised to find that there seems to be no industry standard for high-level communications. I'm not talking about 3DES or low-level transmission protocols, but something along the lines of an Interface Control Document; something that governs the sequence of events for various transactions: verify credentials, withdrawal, check balance, etc. Any ideas? Does anything like this even exist? I can't believe that after all this time the banks and ATM manufacturers are still just making this up as they go. A shorter question: if I wanted to go into the ATM software manufacturing business, where would I start looking for standards?

• the problem only happens when i try create a release...

  I'm sorry if im not presenting this right, but i trully cannot understand what the problem is. i have a project to hand in, a code of 600 lines defined within a main, .cpp, and header file. if i compile the project with just a debugger and no release, it's fine. when i create it with the release, the following error occurs, for every function!!! 1st error: |36|multiple definition of `countLines(int&, std::vector const&)'| 2nd error: |36|first defined here| if someone will allow me and i can send them the entire code, that would be awesome - i have to have this done within 3 hours.

• Diff multiple files in perforce across a revision range

  I'd like to diff a bunch of lines across several revisions. Like, I'd like to see a.c, b.c, and c.c from changelist X to changelist Y. p4 diff2 a.c@X a.c@Y (where X & Y are changelist numbers) seems to work, but only sometimes. Specifically, if a.c is non-existent at X, I don't get a diff. I'd like to be able to get the diff (even though it'll be the whole file with only adds) anyways. To get the bigger picture: I have several files, across several commits, and I'd like to merge the diffs of these files in these commits, to basically say "this is a diff of what changed in this set of files during this set of changelists"

  I have an app that I want to interact with a web page. Basically I want to press a button and the web page will open in a new view... Sorry I wasn't clear, I am developing on a Mac for an iPhone. Currently I have a "locate me" app that displays your Latitude and Longitude. I want to use those variables to populate 2 of the blanks on a PHP web page/form I have developed. I have added a label and button to my current app, when the button is pressed the URL with the Lat and Long (as passed vars) are displayed in the label. I want those vars to appear on my web page. Hope this is clearer... • Clean way to combine multiple jars? Preferably using ant

  I have runtime dependencies on some external jars that I would like to "rejar" into a single jar. These external dependencies are stored in a external_jars directory, and I'd like to be able to not have to list each one out (e.g., to not need to change my build scripts if my dependencies change). Any thoughts?   How do i plot a vertical axis with variable intervals? on a Flex Chart. I want to plot a data set that has values from 0.1 to 800. When I use a standard Numerical Axis, I have to define a interval. I tried using Log-Axis, but I am not sure how to plot the point values. Looks like something in lines of semi-log axis would be better. A axis with initial values in Numerical, but later shifting gears to a Log-Axis. Any ideas or pointers to implement this in Flex?

  Hi, I have this programming question that's been bothering me for some time now. I'm wondering how is it possible to write applications that change the Windows UI? More precisely how could you write an application that modifies the Windows Taskbar or the Windows Desktop? I'm really interested in this topic but cannot find a lot of information. I've read about extending the Windows Shell but I can't seem to find anything related to modifying the Taskbar and the Desktop. I'm looking for something along the lines of Rainmeter. How did those guys create an application that lives inside the Windows Desktop? I'd like to point out that my prefered language for this would be C# but if you want to give me hints in other languages I'm fine with it and I am running on Windows 7. Thank you

• Build Google App Engine Java source from Eclipse

  I would like to try to build Google App Engine for Java from source. I have tried this: I don't know how to solve the javac Ant task. I am on Mac OS X 10.6.8. The reason why I am trying to to create a Java Project from the source is that when I try to debug/step-into the sources downloaded from SVN, something is wrong in Eclipse and it does not track execution at the right code line. It seems to be executing "comment lines"? So I don't get an accurate tracking of the code path. I think what I would ideally need is: 1) svn checkout command with matching REV number of latest SDK 2) wget command downloading matching jar

  I'm using the built-in ajax functionality of MVC2. Basically the user types a search query, and on every key press a set of results for the query is shown. This works fine in almost all cases, but sometimes the server is a bit slow with a single response, and thus the result for the next key stroke is returned before the previous. When the previous key stroke result set is finally returned to the client it will overwrite the results for the newer search query that should actually have been shown. My code follows more or less along these lines: <% using (Ajax.BeginForm("SearchUser", null, new AjaxOptions() { UpdateTargetId = "findUserResults" }, new { id = "findUserAjaxForm" })) {%> Every keystroke submits this form and thus outputs the results in the 'findUserResults' element.   In one of our class sir said that template allows one to customize behavior of class, and then he gave example of string class, that with few lines of code we can customize string class from STL, as in, we can make it to treat 'a' and 'z' same, 'b' and 'y' same, 'c' and 'x' same and so on. Similary 'A' and 'Z' same etc. "abc" == "zyx" is true; "Abc" == "zyx" is false; "Abc == "Zyx" is true; etc I was thinking of implementing such string class, but I am not able to do so. • Building FFmpeg for Android

  I've spent almost a week on this now, trying to get FFmpeg "Angel" to build for Android. I've tried build scripts from all over the internet to no avail. I got closest was using this. A sthe author himself says the script doesn't work for newer versions of FFmpeg due to this bug, which has been dismissed on that ticket saying "I found a Makefile that does it." This was dis-heartening, being the only post on all of the cast Google world that was anywhere close to my problem. So, question time: Is there a way to get around the above bug? I'm trying to use the newest ffmpeg API, and "Love" is just giving me "undefined reference" errors while trying to use av_encode_video2(), and av_free_frame(). The code I was working on the lines of is at the ffmpeg git repo, under /doc/examples/decoding_encoding.c (the function starting on line 338)

• Putting $$s in the middle of an `equation` environment: why doesn't Latex complain?

  I was surprised that the Latex code from a recent question didn't throw up any errors, and even more surprised on further investigation, that Crowley's explanation seems to be true. My intuition about the \begin{equation} ... \end{equation} code is clearly off, what's really going on? Consider this, slightly adapted code: \begin{equation} 1: e^{i\pi}+1=0 $$ 2: B\"ob $$ 3: e=mc^2 \end{equation} This seems to prove that Crowley's explanation of such code, namely that "What that code says to LaTeX is begin equation, end it, begin it again, typeset definition of tangens and end the equation" is right: lines 1&3 can only be typeset in maths mode, line 2 only in text mode. Shouldn't Latex see that the \end{equation} is ending a display math that wasn't started by the \begin{equation}?

The situation is as such, that a child's tags and a parent's tags need to be combined into one, and compared to a site's tags, depending on a few extra simple equals to lines.   I'd like to know how best to program three different editions of my C# ASP.NET 3.5 application in VS2008 Professional (which includes a web deployment project). I have a Light, Pro and Ultimate edition (or version) of my application. At the moment I've put all in one solution with three build versions in configuration manager and I use preprocessor directives all over the code (there are around 20 such constructs in some ten thousand lines of code, so it's overseeable): #if light //light code #endif #if pro //pro code #endif //etc... I've read in stackoverflow for hours and thought to encounter how e.g. Microsoft does this with its different Windows editions, but did not find what I expected. Somewhere there is a heavy discussion about if preprocessor directives are evil. What I like with those #if-directives is: the side-by-side code of differences, so I will understand the code for the different editions after six months and the special benefit to NOT give out compiled code of other versions to the customer. OK, long explication, repeated question: What's the best way to go?

• Javascript handling textarea

  Hi all, I'm a bit new to Javascript and am trying to create a delimited string from a textare. The problem is when passing in the textarea, it adds newlines for each row on the textarea. I need to have the entire textarea parsed into a string with a delimiter for each line (replacing the newline char).
